I've worked in the book biz all my life, and can't count the number of times people have wanted me to look at some treasured book (or shelf of books) and tell me what it's worth, and the only truthful answer is 'not much'. Here's why: now that it's so easy to sell used books on the web, people are dragging stuff out of their basements, attics and garages and listing them, and the world is awash in $1 copies of just about anything you care to name. If it's truly rare, maybe it's worth something, but 99.99% of the time, it's really not.
Hm. Slight rant developed there, sorry. Keep your books because you love them, but don't be surprised if no one else does.
