Feb 9th 2009 11:30AM FWIW - I have always told friends, relatives, and coworkers that unless they read alot, don't bother. The price makes it untouchable for anyone that isn't a reader.
Having said that - I love my Kindle 1. I just ordered two Kindle 2's. I read alot, and so does my partner. I'm very happy with the improvements made over the previous generation.
Now - what I think needs to be done has been pointed out already. Make the screen bigger! Make the screen a touchscreen. I would love to wipe my finger across for page turning. Also - get these in some format for textbooks ASAP. The integrated searching, clipping, marking, and other features make this the perfect tool for students.
