Please leave your money to all dogs, not just your dogs. Your dogs will not know the difference between a diamond collar and a dollar-store one. However, 30 million dollars could go a long way toward eradicating animal cruelty and animal over-population if it were given to the ASPCA or the Humane Society. Oprah -- you are a good woman. Please do the right thing.

Oprah's Dogs to Be Worth More Than Leona's {The Cooler}
Sep 12th 2007 6:17PM I have a tremendous amount of respect for Oprah. I hope she will reconsider her decision, leaving about $20,000 apiece for each dog (enough to feed them and care for them) and give the rest to charities that help ALL animals, such as the Humane Society and the ASPCA.

It is awesome you love animals!
If you really love your dogs, help their relatives. Your dog will not know the difference between a diamond encrusted collar, and one from the dollar store. PLEASE help millions of suffering animals around the world by contributing to the ASPCA or Humane Society, instead. 30 million dollars spent on spaying and neutering might end the problem of pet overpopulation - meaning millions of innocent animals would no longer be killed simply because there aren't emnough willing homes.
Oprah - you have a huge heart and you are a smart woman. Please do the right thing.

Leona Helmsley Leaves $12M to Her Dog {Luxist}
Aug 30th 2007 12:37PM Leona Helmsley's will left 12 million dollars to her canine companion. I completely understand how Leona Helmsley adored her dog - many of us love ours deeply, too. I just wish she would have shown her love for all dogs, or even all animals, and not just her own particular dog. Imagine how many pets could have been spayed and neutered for that amount of money, or how many dogs could have been saved from the evils of dogfighting. Her little shih tzu will not know the difference between a diamond-encrusted collar, and one bought from Target. I hope the brother she appointed to be her dog's caretaker, will keep other animals in mind as well. What is good for the animal kingdom, is good for one cute little spoiled pooch.

American Humane Association Urges Severe Sentence for Vick {Animal Hubbub}
Aug 30th 2007 12:53AM If there is anything good about the Michael Vick story, it is that there is an emerging increased awareness about animal cruelty and animal fighting. There is so much anger about this issue. If we channel it into a positive direction, hopefully, something good can come of it. However...
I think it is a sad commentary that we, as a culture, are using the Vick story to compare "What's worse?" "What's worse", we ask, "carelessly fathering illegitimate children, or dogfighting?". "Dogfighting or gambling?" "Dogfighting or rape?" "Dogfighting or racism?" "Dogfighting or hateful nationalism?" "Dogfighting or (fill in the blank)....?" The comparisons to dogfighting have been endless.
Dogfighting is one more piece of evidence our country is in need of a spiritual transformation (please note I said spiritual and not necessarily religious). Animals are sentient beings - they feel pain, and they suffer, just like we do. They are not more important, or less important than human beings, but like human beings, they are important, too.
Dogfighting pits one dog against another until one of them dies. The survivor gets his flesh torn off, ears ripped off, eyes pulled out, etc., and the reward for being "a winner" is to writhe in pain until the next fight. Enough said. The pictures make my flesh crawl. The losers are tortured, beaten, starved, electrocuted or drowned. For what? Because these poor creatures were unlucky enough to be born a dog!
Every major faith teaches its followers to be responsible stewards of animals and the Earth. Please help us get the word out that caring for animals, just like caring for people, is an important part of just being a decent person and citizen. If we make this a priority, there will be no more dogfighting horror stories, and no more pointless comparisons of evils. Let us all rise, together, to be better people than we are today, shall we?

I watched Vick's public apology with my little son who USED TO wear Michael Vick jerseys to school. It is disturbing to think a certain percentage of the population is honestly going to be swayed by Michael Vick's "enlightenment" carefully crafted by his overpaid attorneys. Call me a cynic, but I don't believe a man who has been allegedly torturing animals since childhood coincidentally has a religious epiphany as a result of getting caught and losing his job. I hope I am wrong.

NFL Suspends Michael Vick {Animal Hubbub}
Aug 26th 2007 6:33PM As the Chair of Animal Chaplains.com, I have been horrified to learn about dogfighting and the cruel torturing, maiming, and killing that takes place in it. I am saddened that celebrities like athlete Michael Vick and rapper DMX have been implicated in such unbelievably bloody crimes. The blogosphere seems to focus on the wrong questions, IMHO. Instead of, "Are animals as important as humans?", the real question should be, "Do animals suffer?"
Like humans, animals are sentient beings who feel pain. That is not only an intuitive reality, but a scientific fact. We are instructed by all of the worlds major faiths to care for animals in responsible, loving ways. It is our moral and spiritual obligation to protect them. Please join us on October 4th, 2007, in cities all around the world to celebrate "World Animal Day". On that day, animals will be blessed and honored, and we will hopefully all realize how lucky we are to have them in our world.
