Medium: But For the Grace of God {AOL TV}

Jan 15th 2008 3:47PM I am SO GLAD this show is back on!!!! Good timing, too, as it's a breath of fresh air from all the reruns due to the writer's strike (be glad when THAT drama has played out!) When I first started watching this show - and i've never missed an episode - I wondered why they picked such a mediocre actress to play Allison, but now it seems very sensible. They wanted a believable drama, with real mother/wife, real kids, real problems in their daily lives, etc., and I think they all do a wonderful job - Allison looks like the women I run into every day here in NC, not like some pencil-thin Hollywood version of a mother. It adds an aspect to her character that's missing from the CSI/yeah-right-super-gorgeous-cleavage-busting women in other detective dramas. I get sick of cookie-cutter shows, and really appreciate when a network takes a chance to develop something different and interesting like this one. This is one of the few that's still on my "Must-See-TV" list; I've quit watching the others because they are so far-fetched, and I wouldn't watch a "reality show" if you paid me!!

As far as the Huston character: I too miss the old gang, but I think this is yet another "real" direction the writers have taken - many times in our lives we are forced to move on, whether we want to or not, and embrace new people/characters/opportunities that come into our lives. Thank God her husband didn't leave her for another woman... but anyway... most people's situations eventually change in some way, so I think this gives everyone in the show a chance to expand and develop. Hopefully there is much more on the horizon and they're just downplaying Huston's involvement at first - at least I hope that's what is going on...

Hot Seat: Is McCain Too Old To Be President? {Politics Daily}

Dec 27th 2007 8:02PM McCain is only six years older than Thompson, yet one is considered "old" and one is not....?!? Weird how people latch onto something that doesn't really matter, and ignore the important stuff. McCain has had a MUCH rougher life than Thompson, so he looks his age, but that experience has qualified him to look at things from many perspectives rather than the narrow focus that most candidates, and most people in general, take. He would make a good, rational, effective leader - which GOD KNOWS we greatly need after 8 years of the worst ever!!!!!!

Yams vs Sweet Potatoes: I Yam What I Yam {AOL Food Blog}

Dec 4th 2007 8:03PM There IS a difference between them, biologically speaking - YAMS contain a chemical that is supposedly great for women going through menopause, and sweet potatoes don't have this chemical. It's a type of natural progesterone, the ingredient found in most concoctions sold as treatments for menopause. So the thinking goes that eating yams is a more natural approach than taking hormone supplements.

Also, I lifted this information from the web and thought it answered the question of difference, once and for all: "In the United States, what is commonly referred to as a "yam" is actually a variety of sweet potato (ipomoea batatas). Yams are similar in shape to sweet potatoes, but are drier and starchier in taste, and are rougher and scalier in texture. Sweet potatoes are a good source of beta-carotene, vitamin C, folic acid, and some B vitamins. Predominantly grown in the Caribbean and Africa, yams are a good source of potassium, but contain no beta-carotene, and have lower levels of B vitamins, vitamin C, and folic acid than sweet potatoes. "

Eat up! :-)

Guilty Displeasures {AOL Food Blog}

Oct 21st 2007 1:44PM Lori (#10) your reaction to that childhood incident is pretty extreme - have you ever considered counseling - they could help you with some behavior modification that would gradually bring condiments back into the "safe zone" ... and BTW, where were your parents??

The only food in the world that i have an aversion to (disregarding insects and other "exotic culture", of course) is brussels sprouts - my father forced us to eat them by holding the sides of our mouths and pushing them in with a fork, so once I became old enough I never ate another one, and that was forty years ago - my little sister "rewarded" him one time by puking them back all over him, so she was off the hook after that

Junie B. Jones and the case for spelling, grammar {ParentDish}

Aug 1st 2007 7:17PM M4Mommy - it looks like you have a lot more to worry about than misspellings - obscene language will pave the way to the gutter, not poor spelling - and you don't seem to have either one under control!
It's really troubling that people here can get so upset about what "others" do wrong, when very few of the postings are free of errors. It all goes back to the old adage "be sure your own backyard is clean, before criticizing your neighbor's mess"...
Bottom line, reading is supposed to be enjoyable, and if kids are drawn to the Junie B. books then they should read them, because more than likely those will not be the ONLY books they'll ever read!! Not every child "gets" the rules of grammar, but if they read for fun they will be able to "get" much more out of life than if they're frustrated by an inability to be perfect, and give up on reading altogether. So lighten up!
