Having the pleasure of owning the card, here is one experience that makes the $3500 a year fee worth while.

Last summer in Africa on Safari, I lost my Black card. Called AMEX, they printed one and had it hand delivered to me in Africa within 24 hrs all the way from Virginia. Total fee to me, Zero Dollars.
