Ew, plastic cup.

Ew, plastic cup. (3 of 10)

We started with a sauvignon blanc (from the center Vinum XL Riesling Grand Cru glass), which tasted lovely -- until we poured it into a plastic cup. The alcohol burned right from the nose to the first sip. The shape of the glass not only controls the aroma of a wine, but it controls the flow of the wine onto your tongue.

If you tip a wine glass sideways, so that you almost spill it, you can see the shape the wine will make in your mouth as you pour it in. The front of the tongue is known to taste sweetness, and in the proper glass, a good sauvignon blanc will be fruity at first with a nice long finish. The shape of the glass controls what part of your tongue gets wine when, and when we tried the sauvignon blanc from the plastic cup, even the aftertaste was ruined. 22/07/09
