Genie McPherson Trevor
Editor, Edible Rhody
Genie McPherson Trevor began lifelong love of food and cooking with just 60 watts and an Easy Bake oven. As childhood gave way to adulthood she finished college with a degree in literature, writing and art history, taking on catering jobs for added income. A move to the vibrant and dynamic food community of Providence, Rhode Island gave her a chance to sharpen her skills at the renowned Al Forno restaurant where owners Johanne Killeen and George Germon gained international attention with their seasonal approach to Italian wood-fired cooking.
After leaving Al Forno she continued to follow a seasonal approach to cooking while raising a family, freelance writing about food, traveling, studying foodways, as well as the craft of food artisans, farmers and chefs. In 2007 she became the founding editor of Edible Rhody magazine, a local-foods publication in Rhode Island and member of Edible Communities, dedicated to celebrating local, seasonal and sustainable foods.
As the editor of Edible Rhody, Genie has made lasting connections with Rhode Island’s still-growing cadre of farmers and the food artisans and chefs who transform their bounty into extraordinary sweet and savory delights. She has spent the last three years in the backs of restaurant kitchens, in front of the baker’s oven, tromping across farm fields and sliding across boat decks to learn first hand what goes into the artistry and taste of fine foods.
Her story on visionary Providence chef Bruce Tillinghast of New Rivers Bistro will be featured in the forthcoming book, Edible Nation: Local Heroes from America's Sustainable Farm and Food Scene being published by John Wiley & Sons in March 2010.
