The sole is stitched around the toe and pegged through the arch and heel area. At the top is a pegging awl, beeswax to lubricate the awl, and a pile of wooden pegs. The hammer is used to drive the awl into the thick leather. Wooden pegs respond to moisture (like sweat or rain) by swelling and holding tightly. Iron nails rust and eat through the leather.
