Mount Lebanon Cover (1 of 4)
This envelope from around 1861 bears the world's only known example of a postage stamp mistakenly issued with a mirror image of the intended design is known by collectors as the "Mount Lebanon, Louisiana 5 cent Postmaster's provisional." Wall Street executive William H. Gross paid $385,000 for it in 1999 and now it is one of the highlights of his Confederate States of America Collection to be offered in a public auction by Spink Shreves Galleries, November 19, 2009, with all proceeds to be donated by Gross and his wife, Sue, to the Smithsonian National Postal Museum. 17/10/09
