High-end independent luxury watch maker Thomas Prescher presents a new creation from his Tempus Vivendi collection. Right out of his workshop in Switzerland comes the Qatar watch, a timepiece dedicated to the nation of Qatar.

The origins of the Tempusvivendi collection, with their double retrograde hands stems back to the 19th century - seen on only the most luxurious and decorated for clocks and pocket watches. The concept allows for a striking and artistic way of telling the time and providing space for the watch makers to apply imagery to the watch face.

The all gold 39mm wide watch case features an specially made automatic mechanical movement that has been ornately decorated all over. Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, the automatic rotor is engraved and highly personalized, while the movement itself features hours of traditional style engraving work. Each gold surface is hand engraved as well. The watch is attached to a hand-sewn alligator strap.

Time is read by observing the position of the tips of the two Arab style swords as they move along the indicators. Each sword is individually connected to the movement at the bottom and overall each over and they move down. If you prefer to look at the time as an artistic statement, you can press a pusher located in the crown and the hands will jump back to their "natural" position (as seen in the image). Pressing the pusher again will give you a view of the time once more. The image on the dial is hand engraved on gold and shows an Arabic coat of arms with a sail ship in water, and an island with two palm trees. The timepiece is of the highest craftsmanship quality for dedicated watch lovers of the Qatar region who will no doubt be enchanted by the timepiece as an instrument, and as an honor to their country.

Ariel Adams publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogtoRead.com.

Gallery: Thomas Prescher Tempus Vivendi Qatar Watch

Thomas Prescher Tempusvivendi Qatar Watch originally appeared on Luxist on Sun, 27 Dec 2009 12:01:00 EST. This is actually the second set of limited edition Cutthroat watches from Montana based American watch maker Bozeman Watch Company. The brand is known for classic looking luxury watches with an outdoorsy American twist, using Swiss movements. There are really very few smaller Americans brand such as this. As an homage to fishing and the famous Cutthroat trout, this newest edition of 100 pieces is broken up into at least 5 color choices. Four dials are in silver with either red, orange, blue, or green trim (as the color of the lume on the hour markers and tips of the hands), and one version with a black colored face. These are distinguished by regional or thematic names such as the "Yellowstone" or "Whitefish" editions.

In a classically handsome manner the watches are nice in a subtle way. Understated and functional. Inside the watches are Swiss automatic GMT movements (likely an ETA 2893-2) that have been COSC Chronometer certified. The arrow shaped (literally like an arrow used with a bow) GMT hand is red tipped on all models, and follow a neatly marked GMT hour scale on the chapter ring. The dial is very easy to read with all markers present. One of the things I really like about the watches is that all the hands are perfect in length. This is a sign of a good watch designer. The counterweight on the seconds hand is shaped like the brand logo. The watches are each in a 42mm wide, highly polished steel case with a sapphire crystal and 100 meters of water resistance. They are matched to simple leather straps with contrast stitching. Price for these hand-tooled watches is between $4,200 - $4,700 (each model is in a limited edition of 15 or 40 pieces - together totaling 100). The pictured model is the Bozeman Cutthroat Mack Creek Edition. Finally! A classy looking skeletonized tourbillon watch in platinum with what looks to be a... blue horseshoe on the dial. Is that right? Horseshoe? Sure why not. A little good imagery always does watches good. The whimsy doesn't stop there as the matching blued hands squiggle ("serpentine") in delight, pointing to the time. The manually wound Calibre DR780 Tourbillon Squellete (skeleton) movement is chamfered and hand filed and polished until it gleams of worthiness (this includes hand polishing of the screws as well!). The movement is quite nice actually, with an 82 part tourbillon carriage spinning with lots of white area around it to ease your view, as well as 64 hours or power reserve.

Daniel Roth further suggests oddness in the watch as it is an inherent paradox (if you see it their way). While the case itself is make out of platinum (a very heavy metal) the dial is highly skeletonized suggesting lightness. Thus the watch mixes the concepts of high weighted stateliness with a feeling of feather-light delicacy. Are they harmonious or do they oppose one another? The light tone of the platinum and blued steel on the dial meld well with the midnight blue hand-sewn alligator strap. The strap clasp is in white gold as opposed to platinum (likely to prevent scratches on this "high contact area" of the watch). This Daniel Roth Tourbillon Lumière Platinum horological acquired taste will likely be available soon in limited numbers.

Ariel Adams publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogtoRead.com.
Daniel Roth Tourbillon Lumière Platinum Watch originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 26 Dec 2009 12:03:00 EST. A sexy Speedmaster is here. This is the first retro styled watch I've ever really drooled over. I really love the combo of design elements here from the new style Speedmaster case, to the railroad style numerals and of course the Olympic game touches. It all started back in 2008 with Omega's limited edition Speedmaster Summer Olympics watch in gold with a new type of movement modification giving a five Olympics rings style chronograph and calendar. When I discussed it back then I loved it, and I still do. Then recently I saw that they were to released an De Ville model with the same movement. Finally someone at Omega realized the style was a hit.

Now I discover that at least two more Speedmaster and Seamaster based models are coming with the same movement. Not only that, but they are part of a new Timeless Olympic collection that features connections to Omega's link as the official time keeper of the Olympic games. Until now, these were all limited editions as far as I know. So let's recap. Cool movement is being used in more watches, and there are going to be at least four Timeless Olympics collection models with Olympic design cues. I am thrilled.

The best model in my opinion is this Omega Timeless Olympic Speedmaster 5-Counter watch. Simple, straight-forward name and a great, clean look (also little text on the dial). Omega takes the look from classic Omega timepieces and combines them with the modern look of the Speedmaster case. It is an interesting combo. You also get the vintage style red Omega logo. The arrow hour hand mixes well with the dagger minute hand and the older style Arabic numerals. The tachymetre bezel completes the Speedmaster character. The rear of the watch likely has some Olympics themed engraving. Size is probably about 42mm wide and the watch will be in steel.

Inside the watch is the Omega Caliber 3888 Co-Axial automatic movement - which is likely Chronometer certified. Functions more or less include a 12 hour chronograph and day-date calendar. A very cool and functional design the perfectly arouses our thoughts of Omega and the Olympics. Only thing they left out was the Olympic rings logo as the counterweight on the chronograph seconds hand - but having it in would have obstructed the dial too much. Price will be 5,380 euros, likely available early next year.

Ariel Adams publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogtoRead.com.
Omega Timeless Olympic Speedmaster 5-Counter Watch originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 25 Dec 2009 12:01:00 EST. Bovet has been steadily making itself standout as a unique luxury watch maker since earlier this decade when it was purchased by Pascal Raffy in 2000. With a steady stream of about 2000 watches made a year, the exclusive brand is still a nice luxury watch maker. The watches are quite impressive actually, and the company plans to up to production to about 4000 watches a year soon.

The next step for the luxury watch brand is to make its own in-house made movement. This is quite an ambitious feat for a brand with this modest level of production, but they can certainly do it. Although development on the new movement has begun, it will not be released until 2013 - a testament to how long it can take for a movement to by developed, tested, and perfected before production. The movements will likely be very high-end, mostly being hand made and decorated. The included images are not necessarily of the new movement, but display examples of the craft work that Bovet places in its watches. I have a feeling that the upcoming movement will be very impressive and more than just a mere basic movement with "Bovet DNA."

Ariel Adams publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogtoRead.com.

Gallery: Bovet Watches Develop In-House Made Movement

Bovet Watches Develop In-House Made Movement originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 24 Dec 2009 18:01:00 EST. The used Rolex watch market is robust and maybe even a bit crowded. Why? Because pre-owned Rolex watches are big business given the fact that Rolex watches have such an incredible ability to retain value. Still, it is sometimes hard to justify buying an older model when new models exist. One good way to breathe life into older, good condition Rolex watches is to modify or customize them. That way you aren't one of legions of people who have the exact same Rolex watch.

Rolex modification is a growing segment in the watch market with retailers offering everything from brand new Rolex watches that have been modified, to performing such modifications on used models. Many of these modifications have been around for years. Often involving the addition of extra gold or precious jewels such as diamonds to the watch. Recently such modifications have taken a less "blingy" route to offering modified Rolex models that have altered colors and materials. Opinions vary as to the desirability of modified Rolex watches - the same way people argue against the modification of luxury cars. Keep the Mercedes Benz stock, or take it to Brabus for a hot horsepower injection?

Of the most popular trends in Rolex watch modding is the "all black look." Never has there been a factory black Rolex watch (to my knowledge). Thus, the market has met (assumed) demand and offering everything from high priced new Rolex watches with all sorts of black colored modifications, to doing the same to pre-owned Rolex watches. The latter being a better value than the highly limited new modified Rolex watches that are tough to get by all (except a host of celebrities who are gobbling up customized Rolex watches fast enough to make you think Rolex is suddenly shifting to making wallpaper). Producers of new stock Rolex watches can charge double or more than retail for the timepieces.

Modified Rolex watches (new or used) are only as good as the work put into them. The process is harder than it seems. So look carefully, and know what you are looking for. The most popular forms of black color treatment are either PVD or DLC coatings (the latter being more modern, but not as well refined in all instances as the much more common PVD treatment) Time and Gems, an outfit located in Los Angeles offers a host of modified or otherwise custom altered Rolex watches. Time and Gems is not an authorized Rolex dealer, but instead specializes in the sale of used Rolex timepieces. They have recently got into the modded Rolex game and offer up a growing selection of DLC (and PVD) black Rolex Submariners, Sea-Dwellers, GMT Masters, Explorers, Milgausses, and more. The image above is of a Time and Gems DLC black Rolex Submariner watch (priced at $6,500). While modified pre-owned Rolex watches cost more than unmodified Rolex watches, they are arguably more interesting, and clearly involve a good deal of work. The brand best known for their late 1990s act of "breaking taboos" and mixing plastic with diamonds has been quietly undergoing a transformation over the last few months under new direction by Vincent Perriard, formerly of Concord watches.

While I didn't always agree with the design direction at Concord while Perriard was at the helm, he did supremely succeed in getting the world's attention. Whether you liked or disliked the new Concord, at least you knew about it. While Concord was very upscale and highly limited, TechnoMarine is a company with higher volumes in mind. As such I am extremely curious to see what the brand will offer with its newest watches when they are to be unveiled in March 2010.

In the above image you can see a blizzard obscured (thank you cold winter of Photoshop) new TechnoMarine watch design. Black and blue mixes comfortably in a watch that seems to suggest the brand identity well. Aside from this, I know nothing yet about this new chronograph dive watch. What I do know, is that I don't quite understand the holiday message. But it sounds awfully fun, and I'd smile if I heard it come from a TechnoMarine office worker's intoxicated optimistic new year's greeting, while attending some fantasy company holiday party they may have had. Happy "marine time" to you too TechnoMarine, see you in 2010.

Ariel Adams publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogtoRead.com.
TechnoMarine's Glimpse At 2010 Watches originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 23 Dec 2009 16:02:00 EST. Baume & Mercier offers up a Valjoux 7751 movement based watch so similar in theme to a similar offering by Longines, that the brand can never deny who its intended competitor is. By all accounts the new Baume & Mercier Classima Executives XL Chronograph Calendar watch is a nice looking watch, but it does not feel particularly special. Actually that sounds like most of the recent Baume & Mercier watches. I think they are too afraid to infringe upon their higher end relatives in the Richemont Group. A few years ago we saw a host of exciting looking Capeland, Riviera, and Hampton models coming out. Did that stream dry up?

In a 42mm steel case the watch style is classic with just a hint of personality. Baume & Mercier supplies the watch with a relatively attractive guilloche engraved finished dial. It feels like it is missing Roman numerals, but that would have made the dial too busy. Dark gray hands instead of the expected blued steel hands give the watch a Tuxedo look - while the red gold date hand and gold toned moon on the moon phase indicator add a suggestion of luxury. Sapphire crystal on the front and rear of the watch allow clear views, with a Baume & Mercier signed automatic rotor see in the back. The Valjoux 7751 automatic movement is related to the Valjoux 7750, but adds a host of features including an annual calendar, synchronized 24 hour hand, and moonphase indicator in addition to the time and 12 hour chronograph. While there is nothing wrong with the attractive watch, give the competition, anything above $3,000 would be too much to pay for a watch like this. Though I don't know the price of the watch yet.

Ariel Adams publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogtoRead.com.
Baume & Mercier Classima Executives XL Chronograph Calendar Watch originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 23 Dec 2009 12:03:00 EST. Here is a sketch direct from Swiss watch maker Blancpain showing their upcoming Saint Valentin 2010 watch. This will be their annual women's watch for St. Valentine's day next year. It is certainly an usual looking watch. While it does display the requisite heart for the occasion, the dial looks like a tear drop framed by a bending snake as the bezel. Hopefully that tear drop indicates tears of joy. The diamonds all over the bezel structure look almost like reptile scales - sorta cool.

The dial is in pink and white mother-of-pearl mixed nicely together. Nice round-cut diamonds are placed on the dial as hour indicators, while a tenth diamond cut like a heart sits as the 12 o'clock indicator. The watch case itself will be larger than expected at 33mm wide and 48mm tall - made out of 18k white gold. The bezel will be set with an additional 404 diamonds and 66 pink sapphires. Over 2 carats of stones total. Inside the watch is actually an automatic mechanical caliber 615 Blancpain movement, which is less common for such jewelry timepieces that tend to have quartz movements. In fact, according to Blancpain, the caliber 615 is the smallest automatic mechanical watch movement in the world. This little luxury for the day of love should be available by next February as a limited edition of just 14 watches.

Ariel Adams publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogtoRead.com.
Blancpain Saint Valentin 2010 Watch originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 22 Dec 2009 12:01:00 EST. In what is actually a highly anticipated ad campaign, Julianne Moore will soon debut as Bulgari's new leading lady. The popular Hollywood actress will be working closely with the well-known watch and jewelry brand (who actually produce quite a few other times as well) in a variety of planned advertising campaigns. The first of which will be the "Eccentric Charisma" campaign where Moore models nude or otherwise promoting the Bulgari Serpenti line among others. One series of images has the actress wearing an 115 carats of Colombian emeralds. These are in the form of a pair of earrings (that look like that have the power to pull ear lobes to the floor) See images of the earrings as well as a teaser video to the campaign here.

The award winning actress will likely help stimulate the brand that is need of such vitalization. As for me, I don't know what Moore is promoting for Bulgari in the above image, but strangely I want one... One of the new collections that Moore will be modeling are the Bulgari Serpenti collection items that I previously discussed here. The Serpenti collection is themed on snakes and scales. Adding an a degree of Egyptian exoticism to the watch, jewelry, and other accessory items. Bulgari touts the new collection as a return to the design aesthetic that made the brand famous to begin with. Plus, the connection with leading beautiful women of the world (such as the always charming and attractive Julianne Moore - the image here reminds me of Boogie Nights, I wonder why...) is a strong tactic in reaffirming the Bulgari brand as a beautiful brand, instead of just an opulent or trendy brand that has become more Bulgari's image as of late. Look for the "Eccentric Charisma" ads to appear beginning in February 2010.

Ariel Adams publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogtoRead.com.
Julianne Moore Newest Bulgari Brand Ambassador originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 21 Dec 2009 21:03:00 EST. "The relationship between the leader in prestigious sports watches and chronographs since 1860 and golf virtuoso Tiger Woods has always been extremely professional and productive," was part of a statement directly from Tag Heuer recently on its relationship (since 2002) with troubled sports star Tiger Woods. I believe that a follow up to this story was necessary because Tag Heuer has been flipping around a bit. Post extra-marital scandal statements from the popular watch brand Tag Heuer confirmed its commitment to its promotional relationship with Tiger Woods. Within a day or two the brand reviewed the current state of Tag Heuer's public opinion as well as his intent to leave the world of professional golf for some indeterminable amount of time, and it looked as though they had a good excuse to release Mr. Woods from his "obligations." Thus, Tag Heuer then reported that it was strongly reconsidering its relationship with Tiger Woods, and reports indicated that they felt Mr. Woods was going to be too much of a liability to the brand image, with not enough future value given his leave of absence from the public eye.

All of a sudden Tag Heuer seems to have come to their senses and realized that despite the scandal, no matter how minor or major it is, Tag Heuer is still a very valuable personality and image for the brand. In what I hope is their final position, they indicate that they will temporarily scale down Tiger's involvement or image in current advertisements, but still retain him in select ad campaigns. Don't expect to see too many more Tag Heuer "Watch are you made of?" campaigns with Wood's face attached to the ad - because the public has an answer to what Wood's is made out of. Plus, Tiger's future as the face of Tag Heuer will of course depend on if and when he returns to professional golf (which he likely will). Part of Tag Heuer's reluctance to drop Woods all together might have something to do with Tiger being titled PGA Tour player of the year. I promise that this will be the last time this story is mentioned - no matter how many times Tag Heuer seems to change its mind. Several of Tiger Wood's other sponsors have dropped him altogether, while a few like Tag Heuer are committed to the international star, but will limit his presence in ads for the foreseeable future.

Ariel Adams publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogtoRead.com.
Tag Heuer Ambiguously Finalizes Position On Relationship With Tiger Woods originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 21 Dec 2009 20:03:00 EST. For 2010 comes this Lange 1 Daymatic watch from everyone's favorite German luxury watch brand A. Lange & Sohne. The Lange 1 Daymatic is the first ever automatic watch in the Lange 1 line - a collection of watches that is much responsible or Lange's current market position as it allowed the revitalized brand to be noticed back in the 1990s. A. Lange & Sohne very rarely makes automatic movements. Instead preferring to produce beautifully decorated in-house movement that are traditional in style, and don't have views of the movement blocked by an automatic rotor (and the caseback is sapphire for a view).

You can't deny that automatic movements are more popular and more convenient. So it is high time that A. Lange & Sohne decided to make one for the Lange 1 line. Adding an automatic winding movement helps alleviate the need or usefulness of a power reserve indicator. As such, Lange decided to replace the power reserve indicator found on all manually wound Lange 1 dials with a retrograde day of the week indicator. At the same time Lange designers inverted the display of the dials on the Lange 1's face, further freshening things up a bit. This means that the Daymatic has the watch face on the right of the dial, while the original Lange 1 has the dial on the left side of the face. Aside from the time and day of the week, the dial has a patented outsize date indicator and a subsidiary seconds dial.

Movement is the in-house made A. Lange & Sohne L021.1 automatic made up of 426 parts with a 50 hour power reserve. Decoration is on par with brand expectation. I haven't seen the automatic rotor decoration, but I will next month when the watch is officially unveiled at SIHH 2010 in Geneva. The Lange 1 Daymatic will arrive in a 39.5mm wide case, made out of either 18k yellow gold, pink gold, or platinum - with a matching alligator strap of course. dial is specially toned silver and beautifully finished. Expect price to be in the $50,000 and up range.

Ariel Adans publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogtoRead.com.
A. This is the 9th installment of Omega's Museum Collection watches that are modern re-issues of classic watches from Omega's past. This Milestone 1941 Collector's Piece is based on a watch released back in 1938. Omega is certainly taking vintage to a new era with this one. The original it is based on was know as the CK 2080. While this new version looks super retro, it is actually quite modern aside from the looks. Inside the watch is a modern Omega Caliber 3203 Co-Axial manually wound movement in a 38mm wide 18k white gold case. The movement also has a column wheel for the chronograph complication.

The retro techy instrument dial would have been all the rage of "atomic scientists" back in the early 40s no doubt. Omega claims the original was popular among high grade military personnel. The dial features a tachymeter, telemetre, and a 30 minute chronograph aside from the time. The watch dial itself is thrown in the middle. A busy dial, but cool and functional. Lume on the hands and dial is SuperLumiNova. The case and lugs are also old fashioned in style - though still handsome. Attached is a black alligator strap with a simple buckle in matching 18k white gold. A truly nice, niche watch in a limited edition of just 1,941 pieces.

Ariel Adams publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogtoRead.com.
Omega Milestone 1941 Collector's Piece Watch originally appeared on Luxist on Sun, 20 Dec 2009 12:01:00 EST. A German watch maker owned by the French contributes a watch to charity sold to benefit the Italian Cancer Research Organization. Kind of ironic really, but the watch in question is very cool. Glashutte Original took its very popular PanoMaticReserve XL Watch and have put it in some new clothing. The new black and yellow bumble bee look is sporty and suave - certainly something I hope that they will think about making more widely. The 42mm case is in black PVD stainless steel. It contrasts nicely with the neon yellow on the dial, for the hand, and as the stitching on the strap. While the actual differences between this model and the standard PanoMaticReserve XL watches isn't that great, the watch really feels different.

Inside the watch is Glashutte Original's automatic caliber 90-03 movement that has the time with subsidiary seconds dial, power reserve indicator, and a big date indicator. I like that Glashutte Original was able to tone down the watch (other versions or after in gold) and at the same time make it more sporty. This piece unique is really stunning and I hope more timepieces from the luxury German brand follow in suit.

Ariel Adams publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogtoRead.com.
Glashutte Original PanoMaticReserve XL Piece Unique Watch For Charity originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 19 Dec 2009 18:01:00 EST. As predicted, here is yet another "vintage" watch model from a popular Swiss luxury watch brand (that is coincidentally French owned). Zenith underwent new direction recently and this may be one of the first models to stem from that change. There are high hopes for the brand that was for the last few years making interesting, but unbuyable watches that lacked soul or clear purpose.

This new model is certainly a change, but I don't think it is for the better. the Zenith Vintage 55 watch has all the right things in the right places but nevertheless feels uninspired. There are better options with a very similar design from brands such as Chopard, Union Glashutte, Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, and others. The Vintage 55 simply lacks the character that people are looking for when buying a new watch meant to evoke feelings of some amorphous "retro past." At least it is somewhat trendy with a now "in" vintage look and brown dial.

The watch is in a 40mm wide 18k rose gold case with matching hands and hour markers. A tasteful subsidiary seconds dial and dauphine hands meld logically with the arrow hour markers that have one of the watch's only unique features - center "cuts" in the indexes. A single Arabic numeral is used for 12 o'clock to orient the dial. Likely the most enticing aspect of the Vintage 55 watch is the Zenith caliber 689 automatic (with 22k gold rotor) in-house made movement that is very thin at just 4mm thick and is COSC chronometer certified. Unless the price for the Zenith Vintage 55 watch is particularly inviting, I just don't see what makes the watch differ from the competition unless you are a "Zenith only" person. As one more possible incentive (or realization on Zenith's behalf), the watch will be as a limited edition of 100 pieces.

Ariel Adams publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogtoRead.com.
Zenith Vintage 55 Watch originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 19 Dec 2009 12:02:00 EST. Swiss watch maker Hublot is making 12 awesome piece unique watches with musical group Depeche Mode. Hublot is teaming up with Depeche mode as part of a charity concept to benefit the Teenage Cancer Trust that will take place on February 17, 2010 at the Royal Albert Hall in London (tickets are available at Livenation).

Hublot will be making 12 one-off watches for an accompanying charity auction to support the event. Each of the 12 watches will have one of Depeche Mode's album covers on the dial. The watches will most likely be a Hublot Big Bang modified specially for the one-of-a-kind watches. While images of the watches haven't been seen yet, we can imagine how cool they will be.

In all likelihood the watches will be auctioned off as a set. Volna is a luxury watch brand with an interesting slogan - "Russian Heritage Swiss Made." As a luxury watch maker their theme is giant paradox as the Swiss concept of luxury and Soviet Russia are concepts that clash. But ignore that little issue for a moment and you have a unique design niche for a luxury watch maker. In the red tinted vision of old Soviet era military technology, is a brand that celebrates the look and feel of that style of military nationality. In a country where often times the military elite got paid in medals versus money, their military equipment at least needed to have an impressive look and feel.

Volna watches are all about attempting to rethink and recreate that image. The brand's newest watch is the Typhoon Siberia SHCI - a cool if not gimmicky means of adding something fun to the luxury sports chronograph watch segment. The name of the watch sounds like a foreign translation of a Hollywood action movie that might be called "Siberian Storm" - that somehow ends up "Typhoon Siberia." This new model is all in a very good type of grade 5 (G5) titanium and has a unique system that Volna has developed. Strap is rubber.

An irony of many chronograph diving watches is that operating the chronograph too deep underwater will damage the watch by letting water in. So Volna has developed a "Security Hand Chronograph Indicator" (SHCI) that displays a message on the dial of whether or not the chronograph is locked or unlocked for use. Locking it is done vial a turning lever located on the crown.

The watch case is 46.5mm wide and water resistant to 300 meters. There is a propeller engraved into the caseback and the crown. The dial is in black with decorative satin finished ruthenium plates and either red or black on black numerals and hands. Inside the watch is a Swiss Automatic movement that is likely a modified ETA. There are two versions of the watch (red on black or black on black dials), with limited editions of 125 pieces each. Not too sure about price, but it is over $10,000 per watch.

Ariel Adams publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogtoRead.com.
Volna Typhoon Siberia SHCI Watch originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 18 Dec 2009 12:02:00 EST. This new watch brand just sort of popped up out of nowhere. It looks to be aimed mostly to the fashion and high-end crowd who wake up each morning thinking about how blingy they want to be on a scale of 1 to "blinded by sparkles." Still, the watches aren't to shabby. Rather appealing looks with high quality components and Swiss movements. The first line from the Avenir Chrono brand is this Boss Premiere watch collection that comes in steel, rose gold, and platinum. Plus, you can get them decked out with diamonds. Now that I think of it, with a name like Avenir Chrono, the brand pretty much has to release only chronograph watches from now on right?

The guys behind the brand are also behind the Rafaello & Company Jeweler brand. They tend to stick to urban pop culture elite as their best clients. While watches are not a new venture for them, the Avenir Chrono brand is. The watches comes in two sizes - 50mm wide and 44mm wide. Both bold in stature. There is one major thing that the watches really excel at, and this is high contrast to attract attention. Watch makers have known for years that a high contrast ratio look in watch makes them appealing. Plus it is good practice to throw in a splash of red. Look closely and you see it. Avenir Chrono took good notes in watch design class. You can see the high contrast of black and either the gold or steel (and platinum).

Titanium is also used in the cases and for parts of the bracelets. Inside the watches are Swiss ETA Valjoux 7753 automatic movements. The dials are pretty easy to read and masculine (kind of going for an aviator style look), while the dial plate is machine guilloche engraved. Imagine the diamond versions as you will, with diamonds all over the case and bracelet (but not the face thankfully). Prices for the Avenir Chrono Boss Premiere watches start at about $12,500 and go to $45,000 (for platinum most likely). Opt for the diamond encrusted "Black Snow" models and prices jump to $65,000 - $120,000.

Ariel Adams publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogtoRead.com.
Avenir Chrono Boss Premiere Watch Collection originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 12:03:00 EST. The aptly named "Wrist Watch Annual" line of yearly guides to the world of watches has now been released for 2010. Somewhere between a book and a magazine, this uber resource is the finest print publication that you can get when it comes to spending time in the world of watches. The guide covers many brands, each with a survey of their new and popular models - complete with images, movements, specs, and prices! The latter of which are hard to find.

The book also features a new pictorial glossary of watch terms both common and obscure. It is now possible for you, with this brief eduction, to know what I am talking about half the time in my many watch-centric articles. I personally give credit to a previous version of Wrist Watch Annual back in 2002, for really acting as the catalyst to my intense passion for watches that I have today. It is a powerfully enjoyable publication, and beautifully made. Price is just $35 direct from the publisher website here. 456 pages of horological enjoyment with 1,400 full color images. I don't say this too often, but the books are almost drool worthy if you are anything like me. After you click over to the publisher's page, you have access to more information as well as screen shots of Wristwatch Annual 2010's select pages. A must have for all new and existing watch lovers out there.

Ariel Adams publishes the luxury watch review site aBlogotoRead.com.
Wristwatch Annual 2010 Catalog Better Than Ever originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 07:04:00 EST.
