Jamie Moyer Drops The Price Of His Seattle Home

jamie moyerLast weekend professional baseball pitcher Jamie Moer was in Texas for the Super Bowl and his annual fundraising initiative for The Moyer Foundation his nonprofit which has a mission to provide comfort and support to children enduring a time of profound physical, emotional or financial distress. The Moyer Foundation joined with chef Mario Batali and The Mario Batali Foundation to present "Spaghetti Western", which was held right next to Chef Tim Love's Love Shack restaurant in Fort Worth, Texas. The event raised $145,000.

But today Moyer is on my radar for a real estate price chop. Moyer, who is 48 and still pitching (although currently not active due to elbow surgery) is trying to sell his home in Seattle's Magnolia area. He was traded from the Seattle Mariners to the Philadelphia Phillies in 2006. He put his home on the market in 2009 for $8.9 million. In December 2010 it popped back up on the market for $7.8 million. Moyer is apparently serious about selling, it just had another price cut, to $6.75 million.

The Tudor style home was built in 1933 but has plenty of modern details including a plush wood-paneled home theater/game room and an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven. The home's nearly 1/2 acre lot includes a pool, pool house and four-car garage. Other details include a family room with French marble floors, fireplace and butlers pantry; a living room with a vaulted ceiling; a library and a large master suite. The listing is with Windemere Real Estate.

Carbon Ski Concept by Audi and Head

Audi Carbon Ski Concept

Audi has culled its experience from motorsports and its partnership with the German Ski Association to design a fresh take on the downhill ski.

Built around a wooden core, sandwiched with aluminum and titanium and coated in carbon fiber, the Audi Carbon Ski concept is said to be some 200 grams lighter than a comparable conventional design. And though the design remains a concept for the time being, Audi and sports equipment firm Head are testing the skis for production potential.

The Selling Of The Joe DiMaggio Brand

Last month I wrote about the multi-million dollar deal for the rights to Marilyn Monroe's name. Now comes news that one of her husbands, the late "Yankee Clipper" Joe DiMaggio is also stepping into the spotlight as a consumer product brand. The estate of the baseball player has agreed to put his name and likeness on a variety of new products.

Bats, t-shirts and other merchandise will commemorate the 70th anniversary of DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak but that's not all. The DiMaggio brand will also be extended into men's clothing and accessories and could also include food and fragrance. The legend of DiMaggio, both because of his connection to Monroe, and because of his legendary sports prowess, is one that has stood the test of time. Even people who were not alive when he was playing baseball are familiar with his name. The 13-time All-Star and nine-time World Series champ last played in 1951 and died in 1999.

Morris Engelberg, the baseball star's longtime friend and lawyer, told the NY Post that he waited so long to make a deal because when DiMaggio was on his deathbed he asked Engelberg to protect his name. Engelberg will serve as counsel for the licensing initiative and plans to be vigilant in protecting the legacy of the baseball star.

Killy, Luxe Ski Wear from a Stylish Olympic Champion

Killy, Luxe Ski Wear from a Stylish Olympic Champion
Jean-Claude Killy won all three ski events at the 1968 Winter Olympics, worked as a stuntman in James Bond films, appeared in Rolex ads, raced sports cars and was tapped as one of GQ's 50 most stylish men of the last 50 years. Until now we didn't know that he also has an eponymous line of luxe ski wear. Born in the French Alps, elegance, comfort and performance are the key focuses of the Killy brand. French designers, cutting edge fabrics, sporty laser cuts and color hits adorn what are otherwise very practical weatherproof garments for both men and women. The quality and style of each Killy ski piece is designed to "embody the exacting demands and spirit of Killy, the man himself." Recently merged with the leading French outdoor group Lafuma, which also owns the famed Le Chameau boot brand, look for Killy to make even more of an impression in the future.

A Short History Of Super Bowl Rings

super bowl ring new orleans
Super Bowl teams don't just fight for the Lombardi trophy, they also get the chance to wear some pretty fancy rings. The NFL pays for 150 rings to be given to the winning team (players, staff, owners) of the Super Bowl. The league pays up to $5,000 for each ring, although adjustments may be made for the prices of gold and diamonds. Rings are generally more expensive that that these days with the team owners often footing the bill for lavish and impressive art pieces. ESPN has a special section on Super Bowl rings that delivers some interesting trivia like the biggest ring size (William "The Refrigerator" Perry wore a size 25).

Shown above is the ring that last year's winners received. The Super Bowl XLIV championship rings for the New Orleans Saints were designed by Tiffany & Co. and feature a bunch of touches that resonate with fans of the Saints and their city. The rings are yellow gold and feature the New Orleans Saints fleur-de-lis logo set with round diamonds. The words "world champions" are set into the bezel of the ring with eight diamonds on each side (a total of 16 symbolizing the games the Saints won during the season). The rings also bear the score of the game, the NFL shield, images of the St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square and the Louisiana Superdome, a scene from the championship parade and the first few notes of the song "When The Saints Come Marching In." The underside of the ring bears inscriptions of team mottoes from last season: Be Special; Finish Strong; and Smell Greatness. They are believed to have a value of around $30,000 each.

Former Los Angeles Laker Chris Mihm Lists His Manhattan Beach Home

chris mihmIn the latest case of sports star real estate, former Los Angeles Laker Chris Mihm is looking to unload his home in the professional-sports-star enclave Manhattan Beach, California. The LA Times reports that Mihm has listed at a loss. The home is for sale for $2.099 million but he bought in 2004 for $2.16 million. Mihm played for the Lakers from 2004 to 2009. He later went to the Memphis Grizzlies before being sidelined by an injury.

The home is a newer Mediterranean, custom built in 2002. It has a 25-foot-high entry which must have been great for the seven-foot-tall basketball player. The five-bedroom home has a large master suite with a separate reading area and a large bathroom with dual sink vanity, separate steam shower and Jacuzzi tub. The remaining four bedrooms upstairs each have full baths, and walk in closets as does downstairs bedroom.

Manhattan Beach is full of homes that are very close together. This one offers a little breathing room with a large lot and a pool and spa in the back yard. Other features include coved ceilings in the formal dining room, a game room and an eat-in kitchen, which opens to a family room. There is a two-car garage as well as a one-car garage, each with separate driveways. This property is listed with Chad Fahlbusch of Northwest Realty, Manhattan Beach.

Express Celebrates Men's Style Staple at Super Bowl

Express, the stylish clothing brand for the young-and-cool set with a staggering $1.8 billion in annual sales, is celebrating the 10th anniversary of their most popular menswear item with a VIP bash at the Super Bowl. Since it was first introduced in 1991 the brand's 1MX shirt (above) has outfitted millions of men tired of shapeless sacks, upping the style quotient across the country. Offered in a range of 10 staple colors with an additional 10 colors rotated in per season, the highly-engineered 1MX features an calibrated collar, sleeve caps, hand patterned interlining, French seams, and 97% cotton / 3% spandex stretch fabric for a "custom" fit, available in two styles.

Billionaire Buys the Buffalo Sabres

Natural-gas billionaire Terry Pegula really loves hockey. The founder and former president of natural-gas firm East Resources Inc., a company which was sold to Royal Dutch Shell Plc in May for $4.9 billion, is spending major money on the sport. Bloomberg reports that in the past few months he donated $88 million to Penn State University (his alma mater) for a new sports arena and women's and men's varsity hockey programs. Now he has bought the National Hockey League's Buffalo Sabres from former New York gubernatorial candidate Tom Golisano and minority owners Larry Quinn and Dan DiPofi.

It's not known how much was spent and the sale must be approved by the NHL's Board of Governors before it is official. It was previously reported by Hockey News that he had signed a letter of intent to purchase the team for $150 million. Pegula is said to be a lifelong fan of the team. The Sabres joined the NHL for the 1970-71 season and have never won the Stanley Cup.

Ray Allen Re-Lists His Washington Home

ray allenOur friends at Curbed alerted us to a change in the slow seller files. Boston Celtics player Ray Allen is trying once again to unload his five-bedroom estate in Carnation, Washington. When he played for the Seattle Super Sonics he lived in the home but he was traded to the Celtics in 2007. We covered the home in 2008 when it was first listed at $6 million and then reduced to $5.2 million. Like many sports stars after a relocation, Allen was unable to sell and pulled the home from the market. Now it's back with a new low price tag. It is listed with Matrix Real Estate for $3.7 million.

Allen's Craftsman-style estate is on nearly 4.5 acres. It's a rather nice home with vaulted entryways, box beam ceilings and a casual style. It is a former Street of Dreams Award winning home and includes a gourmet kitchen, home theater, office and exercise room. The home has a lot of exterior features too such as a putting green, pool, exterior cabana and a sports court connected with well-landscaped pathways. The press release from Matrix real estate says that Allen made several customizations including the addition of an elaborate master suite with a double-sided fireplace, attached office/nursery, two room-sized walk-in closets and a travertine-tiled spa bathroom.

Will Farmers Field Bring Football Back To Los Angeles?

Los Angeles got one step closer to the dream of having a football team today. Entertainment company AEG has announced that it has signed Farmers Insurance to a 30-year naming-rights deal for a new 68,000-seat football stadium in downtown Los Angeles near the booming L.A. Live complex and the home of the Los Angeles Lakers, the Staples Center, an area that is quickly becoming the new heart of Los Angeles.

The billion-dollar stadium with a retractable roof will be called Farmers Field and Los Angeles citizens have been promised that this new complex won't cost them a thing. The 30-year-deal has been called one of the largest naming-rights contract ever, a reported $650 million dollar deal. Because there is no team in place, while Farmers gets plenty of signage, there's no other media involved in the deal. But the decision paves the way for the long-range dream of having the NFL back in Los Angeles. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was on hand at the announcement expressing his excitement that football will be coming back to Los Angeles. Also in attendance was former Laker great Magic Johnson, who sold part of his stake in the Lakers to focus on bringing the NFL back to L.A., a city without a team since 1994. The question of course is which team. There has been talk of having the San Diego Chargers move to Los Angeles. Other teams which could become L.A.'s dream team include the Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars.

A Glimpse At Where Tiger Trains

We've been hearing about Tiger Woods' massive complex in Jupiter Island, Florida for years. Back in 2005, Woods paid around $38 million for a 10-acre compound on Jupiter Island in Florida. It was a very expensive teardown, in 2007 the estate's redevelopment was estimated to be in the $15-$20 million range. But Tiger wasn't building just for fun, the home is centered around keeping him in peak shape for his golf game.

His property, which extends from the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean included four houses, the main house, plus two guest houses and a beach house. Woods began construction creating a personal home that now includes a state-of-the-art training facility. Jeff Realty has an image of the enviable facilities which would do any university proud. The facilities include his own personal golf course; a 100-foot length swimming pool; a separate 60-foot diving pool and a spa as well as a full tennis/basketball court.

Jeff Lichenstein says that while on similar Jupiter Island estate homes you might see waterfall resort-style stone pools with lots of freeform space for lounge chairs and entertaining, Tiger's area is strictly business, the deck is built with practically no space to lay out or entertain and the view is of his own golf course with the Intracoastal practically a mile away. This is a place for Woods to get back to what he does best, winning.

Jeff & Cary Lichtenstein are real estate agents with Illustrated Properties. They concentrate on marketing Admirals Cove real estate in Jupiter Florida to Mirasol homes for sale in Palm Beach Gardens Florida

Tiger Woods Dubai Golf Resort Put On Hold

We've been talking about the Tiger Woods golf resort project in Dubai since 2006. Back then Tiger's company, Tiger Woods Design, partnered with Tatweer, a member of Dubai Holding, to create an exclusive golf community that was to include Al Ruwaya, a Tiger Woods-designed Golf Course, golf academy; a 60,000-square-foot clubhouse; an 80-suite boutique hotel for VIP guests; 300 luxury villas; 20 mansions and a community retail area. The first completion date for the project was 2009. Then in late 2009, amid the wake of the Woods mistress scandal, the Dubai backers of the project said they were continuing as planned to complete the course, clubhouse, hotel and more. Now Bloomberg reports that the project has been halted. The decision was a result of the current issues facing luxury real estate in Dubai. Dubai Holding did not give any estimate of a time at which the project will be restarted.

The picture above shows the entrance to the Tiger Woods Dubai course. Construction had been started several years ago and six holes were constructed and kept alive on minimum water, populated not with golfers but with grazing camels.Mmeanwhile Woods is set to visit Dubai in February for the Dubai Desert Classic.

There has been a lot of mixed information coming out of Dubai recently. On the one hand we've seen hotels like the new Ritz-Carlton open and the launch of the new world's tallest restaurant atop the Burj Khalifa. On the other hand, real estate projects like Dubai's ambitious World islands real estate development have been put in stasis. At present it looks like tourism is beginning to rise again in the area, perhaps real estate will follow eventually.

The Classicist: Barbour Launches the Ltd. Edition Steve McQueen Collection

barbour
EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW: Two icons of authentic sporting style come together in classic British outerwear brand Barbour's cool new limited edition collection designed in homage to the great Steve McQueen, set to launch this fall. In celebration of the 75th anniversary of their iconic International clothing range, which the King of Cool wore while motorcycle racing in the 1960s, the capsule collection of 19 pieces features several new jackets, shirts and sweaters inspired by archival photos of the actor racing motorbikes and driving his collection of classic sports cars. McQueen first donned a Barbour International jacket when he represented the United States team in the 1964 International Six Day Trials (ISDT) motorcycle race in East Germany. The ISDT (now known as the International Six Days Enduro), one of the most challenging moto racing events in the world, requires each rider to cover 200 miles a day over hellish terrain.

Prior to the event in '64 Steve McQueen and other members of U.S. team stopped off in London and bought six-pocket Barbour Internationals, derived from a one-piece racing suit first offered by the firm in 1936, as a defence against the vagaries of European weather. McQueen quickly became enamored of the International's weather-defying qualities and rugged utility, wearing it in several grueling moto races over the years. Classic images of McQueen in his Barbour grace the linings of the jackets in the new collection. Standout pieces include the Penton (above, $799) and Baker ($599) waxed cotton jackets featuring stars and stripes linings and U.S. flags on the left chest, faithfully recreating the jacket that McQueen wore in the '64 ISDT. Two other wax cotton jackets, the Trophy ($429) and the Greenham ($399), reflect McQueen's effortless style on and off the racecourse. [cont'd]

Jose Cuervo Tequila to Sponsor Sauber F1 Team

As tequila enters the mainstream as a premium spirit alongside the likes of vodka and whisky, so will it need a platform to promote itself. And few fora are proving as fitting as motor racing.

After rival distiller Patron promoted its sponsorship of individual teams in the American Le Mans Series to title sponsorship of the entire championship, Jose Cuervo has announced a new deal that takes them straight to the very pinnacle of motor racing: Formula One. The tequila company will be sponsoring the Sauber F1 team, and announced the deal shortly after the team signed Mexican driver Sergio Perez to race its cars this season.

Although Sauber may not be among the top teams today, it has fielded some of the best drivers in the sport, including world champions Kimi Raikkonen, Jacques Villeneuve and Sebastian Vettel. Though its best results came during the BMW years in 2007 and 2008 when it placed second and third in the championship, the team has since returned to using Ferrari engines.
