Polo is "the original 'extreme sport," as Polistas founder Johnny Lynn told us, and has been played for centuries in a wide range of locales from Mongolia to Persia and India, as we learned from photographer Aline Coquelle's gigantic and brilliant book <a href="http://www.luxist.com/2009/09/21/the-classicist-exploring-the-wide-world-of-polo/"><em>Polo: The Nomadic Tribe</em></a>. And though it's undeniably an aristocratic pursuit, more people are getting into the game; some even play it on elephants and snow.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="%GalleryURL%">The Best of Polo</a></strong></p><a href="/gallery/the-best-of-polo/2524461/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/12/p131_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Snow Polo" title="Snow Polo" /></a><a href="/gallery/the-best-of-polo/2524459/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/12/poloboots_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Nacho Figueras" title="Nacho Figueras" /></a><a href="/gallery/the-best-of-polo/2524458/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/12/aspreypolo_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Asprey polo gear" title="Asprey polo gear" /></a><a href="/gallery/the-best-of-polo/2524457/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/12/1stflr31a_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Polistas boutique" title="Polistas boutique" /></a><a href="/gallery/the-best-of-polo/2524462/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/12/p166_thumbnail.jpg" alt="From "Polo: The Nomadic Tribe"" title="From "Polo: The Nomadic Tribe"" /></a></div><br /><br /><a href="http://www.luxist.com/2009/01/05/the-classicist-the-world-of-snow-polo/">Snow polo</a> was first introduced in 1985 in Switzerland's swank <a href="http://www.luxist.com/tag/StMoritz/">St. Moritz</a>, and caught on immediately among the <em>bon ton</em>. It's no surprise that swells in equally upscale Aspen, CO decided to stage their own snow polo tournament nine years ago, the <a href="http://www.justluxe.com/lifestyle/leisure/article-240610.php">World Snow Polo Championships</a>, the only one of its kind in the United States. The tournament recently got some unwanted press when it was discovered that White House party crashers Michaele and Tareq Salahi had <a href="http://www.aspendailynews.com/section/home/137958">scammed the organizers</a> of last year's event. Of course some changes to the game are required for playing on snow. For one thing, the polo ponies are shod with special cleated shoes to provide better traction in the snow, and the ball is larger, lighter, and painted bright red to accommodate winter conditions. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.luxist.com/photos/snow-polo/">Snow Polo</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.luxist.com/photos/snow-polo/1257029/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/01/610x-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.luxist.com/photos/snow-polo/1257030/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/01/610x_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.luxist.com/photos/snow-polo/1257032/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/01/gd5984546@paplo-jauretche,-back-5431_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.luxist.com/photos/snow-polo/1257031/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/01/610x-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.luxist.com/photos/snow-polo/1257028/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/01/2252517388_e6bff96fb9_o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.luxist.com/2009/12/28/the-classicist-the-very-best-of-polo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Classicist: The Very Best of Polo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.luxist.com"><img src="http://www.luxist.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Luxist" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.luxist.com/2009/12/28/the-classicist-the-very-best-of-polo/">The Classicist: The Very Best of Polo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.luxist.com">Luxist</a> on Mon, 28 Dec 2009 09:02:00 EST. Made in a limited edition of 24, the Spitfire Mk 1 sculpture is handcrafted of aluminum originating from the Rolls-Royce Merlin Mk III engine fitted to X4276 KL-B, legendary RAF ace Al Deere's personal Spitfire for the latter part of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_britain">Battle of Britain</a> and 1940, which crashed on 28th December of that year. The sculptures are supported by bronze stalks with precision engineered ball and sockets so the planes can be placed in various attitudes of flight. The sculptures are set upon a <a href="http://www.luxist.com/tag/mahogany/">mahogany</a> and burr walnut plinth and come with a certificate of authenticity signed by one of the original Supermarine test pilots.<br /><br />[via <a href="http://duncanquinn.com/news">Duncan Quinn</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.luxist.com"><img src="http://www.luxist.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Luxist" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.luxist.com/2009/12/23/spitfire-sculpture-made-from-fighters-original-rolls-royce-engi/">Spitfire Sculpture Made from Fighter's Original Rolls-Royce Engine</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.luxist.com">Luxist</a> on Wed, 23 Dec 2009 08:01:00 EST. Men who enjoy wearing bracelets have an incredible amount of options out there. Bracelets and other non-watch wrist wear are increasing in popularity and are suitable as something to wear on one's wrist opposite a watch, or even with a watch on the same wrist. Alternatively they can be worn on days you take a break from your watch, but you still want something there to keep your wrist from feeling naked. <br /><br />Watch and jewelry maker<a href="http://www.icelinkwatch.com/" target="_blank"> IceLink</a> has a neat line of Bicycle Bracelets for men. While IceLink's timepiece collection is clearly priced in the luxury range, these bicycle chain styled bracelets are much more value priced. The brand offers a range of the bracelets in different styles, widths, and with various levels of decoration. Seen above are just two examples with an all stainless steel metal version and other with alternating black link segments. <br /><br />With a design directly inspired by bicycle chains, the line of bracelets is intentionally "gear minded." With the communicative power to suggest that its wearer is both active, and has an appreciation of well-made sports equipment such as a bike or motorcycle. Price is in the $175 range (give or take a bit). You can visit their website for a full catalog of the IceLink Bicycle Chain bracelet choices. <br /><br />Ariel Adams publishes the<a href="http://ablogtoread.com" target="_blank"> luxury watch review</a> site aBlogtoRead.com. <br /><br /><em>Thanks to IceLink for the review item. Things you don't love: acres of exposed cables and the sound of installers drilling holes in your walls. The latest <a href="http://av.jvc.com/product.jsp?pathId=1">JVC soundbar</a> gives you what you love, not what you don't.<br /> <br /> The 3-foot-long, 5-inch high TH-BA3 ($549) brings together a 280-watt amplifier and six speakers. It is the world's first dual wireless system, in that it is supported by a subwoofer and set of rear speakers and zaps the signals to each without any wiring. Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby ProLogic II are supported, and there are two digital optical inputs and one analog in case your <em>Nilsson Schmilsson</em> 8-track still has some good years left in it. <br /> <br /> If you must have something even sleeker and you're willing to submit to 4.1 surround, the JVC TH-BS7 ($599) wireless soundbar is broken up into a thinner speaker a practically wafer-thin, 180-watt amplifier. True, it isn't 7.1 surround, but it is peace of mind for the OCD in you.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.luxist.com"><img src="http://www.luxist.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Luxist" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.luxist.com/2009/12/21/jvc-wireless-soundbar-provides-all-of-the-sound-none-of-the-cab/">JVC Wireless Soundbar Provides All of the Sound, None of the Cables</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.luxist.com">Luxist</a> on Mon, 21 Dec 2009 14:02:00 EST. Perhaps you're looking for a last-minute gift for the holidays or just want to treat yourself once the dust settles. Here's our rundown of seasonal favorites, some we've mentioned before and others appearing for the first time. See the gallery for full pix:<br /><br />1. <a href="http://www.luxist.com/tag/Barbour/">Barbour</a> Dunelm jacket: A slimmed down version of the classic foul weather parka style jacket in signature waxed cotton with an attached hood, utility pockets and a two way zip under a studded-front storm flap, from the classic British outerwear company. Founded in 1894 and holders of the Royal Warrant, they've opened a new chapter in classic <a href="http://www.luxist.com/2009/10/16/fall-sporting-style-starring-the-mercedes-benz-g-class/">sporting style</a> with updated designs. <br /><br />2. <a href="http://www.luxist.com/2009/11/02/the-classicist-lincs-by-david-chu-for-the-gentleman-explorer/">LINCS by David Chu</a> cardigan: From Chu's new collection of clothing for the "gentleman adventurer", a weighty <a href="http://www.luxist.com/tag/cashmere/">cashmere</a> cardigan in a heathery loden weave with a leather buckle at the collar and suede trim under the placket. The epitome of Chu's classic and rugged yet elegant ethos. <br /><br />3. <a href="http://www.luxist.com/tag/RalphLauren/">Ralph Lauren</a> tartan duffel: Part of Lauren's luxe new <a href="http://www.luxist.com/2009/12/09/ralph-laurens-luxe-holiday-offerings/">Holiday Collection</a>, rooted in the spirit of 1930's <a href="http://www.luxist.com/tag/SunValley/">Sun Valley</a>, the famous <a href="http://www.luxist.com/tag/Idaho/">Idaho</a> ski resort frequented by socialites and celebrities. I had a lot of fun browsing the site, which started out as a <a href="http://www.zappos.com/shoes">shoe</a> mecca and now includes <a href="http://www.zappos.com/bags">bags</a>, <a href="http://www.zappos.com/clothing">clothing</a>, <a href="http://www.zappos.com/housewares">housewares</a>, and <a href="http://www.zappos.com/beauty">beauty items</a>. The tough part was making a choice. I gave in to footwear trends and bought a pair of chocolate brown <a href="http://www.zappos.com/uggs">UGG</a> boots, chipping in the rest of the price on my own, of course.<br /><br />Then I thought, what about Luxist readers? So I asked Zappos if it would offer a $50 gift card to one reader, and the nice folks there agreed. Use the card to buy a gift for someone else, or for yourself. Or just save it until you need something. The card doesn't expire and doesn't incur fees.<br /><br />Some other important details:<br />* To enter, leave a confirmed comment below.<br />* The comment must be left and confirmed by December 25, 2009 at 5:00PM Eastern Time.<br />* You may only enter once.<br />* One winner will be selected in a random drawing.<br />* One winner will receive a Zappos Gift Card valued at $50.<br />* Open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia.<br /><br />See <a href="http://www.weblogsinc.com/official-giveaway-rules-us/">complete contest rules here</a>.<br /><br /><strong>The contest has ended. The Fine English Company's products combine traditional craftsmanship with its detailing of exotic animal skins, rare and native woods and veneers to create a range of collectible and desirable objects betokening the best of bespoke British luxury, <br /><br />With 15 years of experience sourcing unusual items and commissioning <a href="http://www.luxist.com/tag/bespoke/">bespoke</a> products, Benedict worked tirelessly to create the Fine English Company's first collection, a selection of which is now available at <a href="http://www.hollandandholland.com/">Holland &amp; Holland</a>, the famous London gunmaker established in 1835 and holder of the <a href="http://www.luxist.com/tag/RoyalWarrant/">Royal Warrant</a>. Never before has Dunhill shown the outside world how the world class craftsman create their products. In this clip we get to see a portion of the film demonstrating the making of Dunhill's <a href="http://www.dunhill.com/en-gb/shoponline/leathergoods/bytype/briefcases/tradition-double-document-case-lp6060b">Double Document Case</a>.<br /> <br /> While we have always admired the finished product, watching the craftsmen at work makes it all that more interesting. It happens in the Walthamstow workshop and all by hand. Each leather artisan is responsible for the construction of a piece from start to finish and includes a stamped card with their name on it inside the finished product. The sense of personal pride taken by the master craftsmen translates into the highest quality and standard of work for Dunhill. <br /> <br /> From the consumer's perspective, watching the skills and techniques involved helps one understand the price tag of over 1,800 British Pounds Sterling for this special bag. The company has a hundred and sixteen years of experience and the same processes that were used in the beginning are still being employed in the crafting of their leather goods today. Anyone who has an interest in fine products should find this glimpse, albeit orchestrated for film, into the manufacturing process at Dunhill fascinating.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.luxist.com"><img src="http://www.luxist.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Luxist" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.luxist.com/2009/12/12/dunhill-lets-cameras-roll-in-their-workshop/">Dunhill Lets Cameras Roll In Their Workshop </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.luxist.com">Luxist</a> on Sat, 12 Dec 2009 09:02:00 EST. So while temperatures continue to drop, Porsche Design is already looking to the spring and summer with its latest sportswear collection.<br /><br />The result of a longstanding collaboration with Adidas, the newest Porsche Design Sport collection features items for driving, running, swimming, sailing, tennis and more. There's a good 26 new items in the collection, which you can check out in the gallery below.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.luxist.com/photos/porsche-design-sport-spring-summer-2010-0/">Porsche Design Sport Spring/Summer 2010</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.luxist.com/photos/porsche-design-sport-spring-summer-2010-0/2501845/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/12/02_300_0040_driving_fabricmixjacket_29800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.luxist.com/photos/porsche-design-sport-spring-summer-2010-0/2501804/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/12/02_300_0060_driving_vnecklightknit_29801_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.luxist.com/photos/porsche-design-sport-spring-summer-2010-0/2501778/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/12/02_300_0070_driving_newfunctionalshirt_29802_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.luxist.com/photos/porsche-design-sport-spring-summer-2010-0/2501808/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/12/02_300_0130_driving_collapsable_29803_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.luxist.com/photos/porsche-design-sport-spring-summer-2010-0/2501785/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/12/02_300_0180_tennis_techsuit_29804_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.luxist.com"><img src="http://www.luxist.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Luxist" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.luxist.com/2009/12/04/porsche-design-sport-sping-summer-2010-collection/">Porsche Design Sport Spring/Summer 2010 Collection</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.luxist.com">Luxist</a> on Fri, 04 Dec 2009 15:04:00 EST. Open through December, the store will carry the Canadian company's Fall/Winter '09 collection for men and women including butter-soft leather bombers, shearling styles, and its ever-popular Puffy down-filled winter coats. The line is popular with such celebrities as Hilary Duff, Jessica Biel, Elizabeth Hurley, Eva Mendes, Kristen Bell, Will.I.Am. and John Legend, to name a few. And a non-celebrity -- me. The coats are beautiful, practical, and better-priced than I expected for such style and quality. Miss Feeney's Finery takes this tradition and adds a little fun. The brand has a whole line of silk ties that are formal on the outside but flip over to reveal a vintage pinup illustration on the inside. Their Candy Cane tie features a pin-up girl dressed as Santa's helper. The crimson Candy Cane tie sells for $85. Check out their whole line of ties and a fedora or two on the <a href="http://www.missfeeneys.com">Miss Feeney's website. <br /></a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.luxist.com"><img src="http://www.luxist.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Luxist" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.luxist.com/2009/11/27/miss-feeneys-candy-cane-tie/">Miss Feeney's Candy Cane Tie</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.luxist.com">Luxist</a> on Fri, 27 Nov 2009 14:01:00 EST. Two versions of the cufflinks, with arms and drivers made of solid 18ct <a href="http://www.luxist.com/tag/gold/">gold</a>, are being issued accompanied by certificates of authenticity signed personally by either Shelby or Moss. Each version is limited to just 50 pairs worldwide, priced at &pound;1,795 or about $3,000 each.
