The hats feature bold designs made of roadkill and consist mostly of the remains of foxes, magpies, rabbits, wood pigeons, pheasants, mallards, crows and peacocks -- the one shown in the picture above is red fox and ostrich (yuck) and there are 35 others. Faulkner has been making the roadkill hats since last year (May 2009) when he noticed a dead magpie and was inspired "to make something beautiful out of something gruesome." The fashion show will mark the end of an 18 week milliners course that Faulkner has been attending.

Via Bornrich
Hats Made of Roadkill by Aspiring Fashion Designer originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 20 Mar 2010 19:01:00 EST. The eight-piece limited-edition collection is made from imported Italian fabrics in a red, black and white color palette. The streamlined and classic creations include a scoop neck matte jersey dress, a denim jacket, a reversible and water-resistant black and white trench coat and a sleek asymmetrical sleeveless black and white jersey dress. The collection was already a steal at accessible price points ranging from $65 - $350 but now we can bring you a little more shopping relief. You can save 20 percent on all Narciso Rodriguez for Bay Collection pieces now through March 31.

Rodriguez is a three-time Council of Fashion Designers of America winner and a celebrity fashion favorite who regularly dresses the likes of Michelle Obama, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel Weisz, Claire Danes and Jessica Alba.
But Oasis singer Liam Gallagher's line for men, Pretty Green, has been so successful that he's turning to women's clothing. Vogue UK reports that Gallagher is adding womenswear to his Pretty Green collection.

The Pretty Green line is described as an up-front, straight talking, classic clothing range that is owned and designed by Gallagher. All pieces, including scarves, jackets and T-shirts are described as limited edition and all are subject to Liam's final approval. He's made it clear on the website and in a video about the line (after the jump) that his motivation for the clothing was to create something that he himself was looking for in fashion design. The Pretty Green website bears his quote: "Clothes and music are my passion. I'm not here to rip anyone off and I'm not doing it for the money either. I'm doing it cuz there's a lack of stuff out there of the things I would wear." How that will apply to designing for women is yet to be seen.
Continue reading Liam Gallagher's Clothing Line, Pretty Green

Liam Gallagher's Clothing Line, Pretty Green originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 18 Mar 2010 02:01:00 EST. Love vintage clothes but not wild about pawing through thrift stores? A new website CHIC&youshallfind makes online vintage shopping easy. The site was founded by former fashion editor and Vogue staffer, Brenna Egan who decided to leap from the magazine world and into retail. Opening an online boutique instead of a bricks-and-mortar shop lets her keep the prices reasonable and sell to the entire country. The site takes a J. Peterman-style approach to sales spinning a creative yarn about each garment.

The site also features the Posh Pawnshop, an e-consignment area. Customers can e-mail rough photos of their items for approval and then ship them to the CHIC&youshallfind headquarters in Los Angeles where they will be professionally shot and uploaded for resale. Once it sells the customer receives the value minus a resale fee.
New Vintage Boutique Offers Found Treasures Online originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 16 Mar 2010 04:02:00 EST.
A creation of Jad Ghandour and Danasha Luxury, the "ultimate red carpet gown" is being kept under lock and key until March 20th but we do have this sketch and know it will feature lots of airy silver fabric, a belted waistline, and a special handset made of diamonds and 18k gold. And as for inspiration Ghandour's design team was quoted as saying they wanted "a gown that would highlight the finest materials without looking overwrought and costume-y."

Sounds like a modern-day Cinderella gown to me and I can't wait to see it.
$1.5 Million Luxury Gown to Debut at Miami International Fashion Week originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 13 Mar 2010 18:01:00 EST. Christie Brinkley is the latest celebrity to auction off the contents of her closet for a good cause. She worked with Clothes Off Our Backs to auction off jewelry, shoes and clothing. Of particular interest is a little garment Brinkley would likely rather forget, the beautiful white Armani suit she wore at her marriage to Peter Cook. The fourth marriage didn't work out well for the former model but that didn't discourage a bidder from paying $775 for the suit. All proceeds went to the American Red Cross.
Christie Brinkley Unloads Bad Luck Wedding Suit For A Good Cause originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 12 Mar 2010 00:01:00 EST.
This has a decidedly London tilt, but we can't help sharing the bounty of The Sunglasses Shop UK. If you're on The 'Sceptered Isle or just passing through, it might be worth a perusal.

Of course, sunglass retailers are common. What aren't common are retailers that make it so easy to find that pair of sunnies you caught while flipping through InStyle or GQ a couple of months ago. The Sunglasses Shop has nearly 40 pages of pictures of celebrities in sunglasses to let you know what was being sported. If you don't find the particular shades you simply must have, the site has a forum where you can post a picture and ask, "What are these?" If the site's spotters know what they are, they'll let you know you and include a link if they sell them. But even if the site doesn't sell them, they'll tell you what the model is if they know and suggest something close from their own stores.
If you want to keep up with trends, there's even a page for best sellers. Last month one of the biggest movers was Tom Ford's James Bond 007, designed for Daniel Craig in Quantum of Solace but seen above shielding the eyes of Marc Antony. If Mr. Lo has made the association a little dubious, perhaps go with fellow bestsellers the Daddy B as worn by Jay Z, or the Carrera Panamerika, a favorite of Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, and Sean Paul. Or wait and see who wears what this month. The Sunglasses Shop has you covered. Or your eyes, at least.
The Sunglasses Shop Makes the Stars' Sunglasses Yours, Easily originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 10 Mar 2010 16:02:00 EST.
The Fine English Company is a recently launched line of luxurious furniture, luggage and lifestyle accessories reminiscent of Britain's colonial past with a contemporary flair, founded by former financial consultant Benedict Wormald. The company was born out of a desire to trade in his City lifestyle in London and turn a lifelong passion for classic British design and antiquities into a business. The Fine English Company's products combine traditional craftsmanship with detailing of exotic animal skins, rare and native woods and veneers to create a range of collectible and desirable objects betokening the best of bespoke British luxury. "I am a great devotee of simplicity and pared down restraint in luxuries," Wormald tells Luxist, "simple items that are executed very well. Luxury to me is not necessarily about adornment or precious materials for vastly inflated prices. I demand a very tactile and aesthetic element from the things I deem to be 'above par'. There is a very definite trend for this that we are seeing in bespoke commissions where people are making much more considered purchases and investing in the construction and execution of the item and not just materials."

Wormald is very passionate about exquisitely made goods and those that are true to the term bespoke, which is increasingly taken in vain. "If you choose to go bespoke from an early age, the lifetime cost is more than borne out in comparison to a larger number of machine made and mass produced brand led products," he notes. "I only wish someone had told me that aged 18! I have Savile Row suits that are as good now at 15 years old as they were new and a good pair of bespoke shoes, a made-to-measure shirt and a bespoke suit will feel more comfortable than any other choice all day and every day - suits only irritate if they don't fit properly and a good suit and shoes will help your posture and the way you comport yourself." Wormald points out that "bespoke need not necessarily be expensive. The power is coming back to the customer to demand something different, something unique to treasure for generations." In the gallery are images of his essential luxuries; continued below you'll find his fulsome explanations about what makes them a must.
London luxury goods firm Dunhill has just announced the opening of the new bespoke and custom tailoring floor of its Madison Avenue flagship store in New York (above), the first of its kind in the U.S. Overseen by Bruno Cosentino, Dunhill's resident master tailor who personally hand makes every bespoke item, the space is entirely dedicated to the brand's exceptional tailoring service. Working one-on-one with each client to create the ultimate in tailoring indulgence, Cosentino first guides clients through thousands of luxurious fabrics, from the finest 'super grade' wools to Mongolian cashmeres and lightweight linens. The master tailor then suggests appropriate fits and styling to complement the client's lifestyle and ways to personalize each sartorial investment. Once the design of the pattern is complete, it then becomes part of the Alfred Dunhill archives, kept in reserve for returning clients seeking additional bespoke services. Dunhill's custom tailoring tradition includes a tuxedo made for Truman Capote to wear at his infamous Black & White Ball in the 1960s as well as bespoke suits made for Frank Sinatra.
Dunhill Opens 1st U.S. Bespoke Tailoring Floor in NYC originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 10 Mar 2010 08:00:00 EST. Ostentatious designer Karl Lagerfeld has has just been tapped to receive the Légion d'honneur, the highest decoration in France, on the eve of the latest Chanel fashion show in Paris. Your list of personal attributes might not include blonde, 6' 2" and mean-with-a-backhand. There might not be a Wimbledon trophy with your name on it. You might not even be Russian. But that doesn't mean you can't at least look like - kind of - the person who has all of those qualities. To do so, you should probably start with the Maria Sharapova Sunglass Collection by TAG Heuer Eyewear.

Designed by the Grand Slam winner herself, the collection includes aviator frames in motorsports-grade stainless steel, or thick, hand-polished, black acetate large-format frames. That latter variety is available in several trims: black with gray or gradated lenses; ivory frame with blue grey lenses; tortoiseshell with gradient brown lenses; and dark plum with gradient pink lenses. And so that there will be no doubt, her autograph is discreetly laser-etched into the ultra light, shatter-resistant, UVA- and UVB-protected lenses.

The collection goes on sale as of this month, retailing for $250.00 at TAG Heuer Eyewear retailers. Your road to the Grand Slam begins here, and once you've mastered the glasses you can work on that backhand...
Last fall saw Lindsay Lohan walking the runway as she unveiled her new fashion collaboration with Ungaro. But while Lohan was in Paris for the shows recently she was not at the Ungaro presentation. Black Book reports that Ungaro owner Asim Adullah told WWD that Lohan was not invovled with the latest collection. It's not known if she has been officially let go. Reviews of Lohan's 1980s-inspired line were less than kind. The fashions included sequined heart pasties used not just to cover nipples but as forehead adornment, neon colors, harem pants and shoulder-baring tops recalling the very worst of 1980s fashion. But perhaps the outrage was preferable to the distinct lack of excitement over Ungaro's latest offerings. Booth Moore of the LA Times says that while the collection was probably better for the being Lohanless, the print blouses, cropped pants and ruched cocktail dresses by Estrella Archs were inoffensive but not very exciting. Is it better to be crazy and derided or predictable and forgettable? We'll have to wait and see if Ungaro decides to let Lindsay back at the drawing board.

The ultra classic bomber jacket gets an update. The folks at J. Crew and Belstaff have joined forces and collaborated on a line of women's outerwear that is truly gorgeous. One of our favorites is the Air Bomber Jacket. The Belstaff leather bomber jacket is one of kind and has an ever lasting design that an adjustment was not needed, but somehow with just a few minor changes, the leather bomber jackets gets even better. By creating a shorter and shrunken fit hitting above the waist, your classic leather bomber is feminized and adds an instant hard-edge sexiness to your outfit. Made from a hand finished buttery burnt brown leather, it features a rib trim at the neck, sleeve and hem. Price: $1195.

J. Last year the economy restrained Oscar fashion a bit but this year it seemed like glamour was back in full force. Actresses wore gowns in either metallic fabrics or rich, deep colors. Deep blues and purples combined with gowns in gold and silver gave the red carpet an almost celestial feel. Mariah Carey, Kristin Stewart and others made the most of deep blue, a color that was a perfect foil for large, sparkling red carpet diamond jewelry. Safely protected from the intermittent rain by a tent, stars brightened up a cloudy day. Check out the gallery below for looks from some of the top stars.

There were definitely some fashion misses. Charlize Theron's dress was a bit of a fashion misstep. Sarah Jessica Parker tried a new silhouette that didn't work as well as her usual nipped in styles. One thing that didn't seem to be in fashion was basic black. Actresses that wore black gowns made sure they were heavily ornamented. This was the year for a cautiously exuberant return to Oscar excess.
The French designer is perhaps most famous in the States for styling Madonna for her "Blonde Ambition" tour but he has also the house designer for Hermès. Gaultier's line for the American department store is designed to pay "homage to the wide range of personalities that make up the diverse styles of American women." The line includes simple pieces like a black strapless dress, belted trench coat and a classic Gaultier striped shirt. Other styles include tattoo leggings and a tattoo-print t-shirt, swimsuits and a cropped leather jacket, the most expensive piece at $199.99.

Will Gaultier succeed at Target? There is a possibility that some of the pieces may be to edgy to connect with the core Target shoppers. It also tends to depend on the store. Targets in more fashion-friendly places will probably sell out fast but in certain Targets I saw the recent Rodarte collection lingering in the clearance racks, so a designer name is by no means a slam dunk for fast fashion success at Target.
The Smithsonian may have no interest in O.J. Simpson's suit but it will happily take Michelle Obama's inaugural ball gown. The elegant, one-shouldered, white chiffon gown designed by Jason Wu will be donated to the First Ladies Collection at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History on Tuesday. The gown, which is decorated with delicate beads and fabric flowers, was praised for setting a fashionable tone for the start of the First Lady's reign. Jason Wu is expected to join Mrs. Obama at the official presentation.

The exhibit of First Ladies clothing remains popular and the Smithsonian is opening a new gallery to house the exhibit. The new "A First Lady's Debut" gallery will include 11 gowns worn by first ladies from Mamie Eisenhower to Michelle Obama. The entire exhibit will show 24 first ladies' dresses, including 12 inaugural gowns.
Michelle Obama's Ball Gown Headed To The Smithsonian originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 05 Mar 2010 23:02:00 EST. Especially when it comes to their jackets. They are overly structured with exaggerated shoulders and adorned with pieces that look as though they can be found on window treatments - but it all works. And with famous stars like Rihanna and Beyonce having been photographed wearing Balmain jackets, Christophe Decarnin's designs have only increased in popularity. His designs look amazingly beautiful on the runway and on celebrities but may not always translate so easily into the real world. However, the Balmain Studded Military Jacket may be the exception. Made from cotton canvas, it's slightly tapered for a well tailored fit and beautifully decorated with silver studs and military patches along the along the front, sleeves, and lapel. And with such a star studded and eye catching jacket, the rest of your outfit could be understated, allowing the jacket to take center stage. Price: $6,225.
Balmain Studded Military Blazer originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 04 Mar 2010 16:01:00 EST. The Christian Lacroix company plans to make some forays into new areas with plans to launch products in four different categories to make money. The Christian Lacroix brand returns in some key licensing deals. It will be making sunglasses and eyeglass frames with Mondottica, luxury stationery with Libretto Holdings, decorative wood panels with Marotte and home textiles with the UK-based Designers Guild. The company also plans to get into children's clothing, lingerie, mens and women's accessories. The designer himself is no longer associated with the brand that bears his name.
Lacoste: The Element of Style, a smashing new book dedicated to the famed French brand about to be published by Assouline, covers much more than just sport shirts; it's about savoir vivre and savoir faire, literally "how to live" and "how to be" with plenty of style. It's designed to illuminate the contemporary relevance of the legacy of René Lacoste, the brand's founder who was the best tennis player in the world at the end of the Roaring Twenties. Nicknamed "Le Crocodile" for his tenacity on the court he began sporting an alligator patch on his blazers starting in 1927, which then became the basis for the sportswear brand he founded in 1933, one of the first labels to marry American functionality with European elegance. He also designed tennis rackets and other equipment, filing 25 patents during his lifetime.

The logo was applied to the easy breathing piqué sports shirts Lacoste favored, which helped him to cope with the heat on American tennis courts. It was a major revolution for players, who until then had worn starched, long-sleeve dress shirts even on the hottest days. The book comes in various different colors, a nod to the fact that Lacoste began producing its shirts in dozens of different shades well before anyone else caught the color bug. Until the 1950s, only white polos and shirts were allowed on tennis courts, but beginning in 1951, the company dared to add contrasting elements in navy blue, then red. That helped revitalize fashion both on and off the courts and presaged the color explosion of the 1960s.
