2009 Audi R8 V10 - click above for high res image gallery

Not so many years ago, driving a exotic supercar while clearly demonstrating the owner's financial wherewithal to own such a vehicle was not always such a pleasant experience. Such cars were typically built by small financially shaky companies that didn't have the resources necessary to properly develop the vehicles to be reliable and robust. The interiors were often poorly built and outfitted and were afflicted by assorted mechanical and electrical glitches.

Then in 1990 things suddenly changed when Honda rolled out the NSX. Instantly people realized that there was no reason why a high performance, mid-engine exotic sports car couldn't be just as a reliable and hospitable as an Accord. By the end of the 1990s exotic car builders like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Aston Martin had all come under the wing of major automakers like Fiat, Volkswagen Group and Ford and the engineers began tapping into the parents resources to improve their cars.

Lamborghini in particular took advantage of its relationship with Audi to help develop the Gallardo, the best selling Lambo ever. Audi in turn decided to reverse the process with a supercar of its own to celebrate its decade long dominance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and used the Gallardo as the jumping off point for the R8. We recently got to spend some quality time with the fastest R8, the 5.2 FSI V10 and you can read about it after the jump.

Gallery: 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Max Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.

Continue reading Review: 2009 Audi R8 5.2 FSI V10, An Everyday Supercar

Review: 2009 Audi R8 5.2 FSI V10, An Everyday Supercar originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 17 Nov 2009 10:00:00 EST.
2009 Audi TT-S Coupe - click above for a high res image gallery

When Audi introduced the first generation TT a decade ago, it was largely a case of style over substance. The diminutive coupe and convertible were based on the platform of the Volkswagen Group's compacts which include the Golf and the Audi A3. The original had a clean, spare look that recalled an inverted bowl. While Audi promoted the TT as a sports car, it didn't really drive like one in part because it was rather heavy for its size.

A couple of years ago, Audi brought forth an all-new TT that retained the basic shape of the original while incorporating some of the latest Audi design language. Of course like most new generations of cars, it got bigger than the first model although Audi engineers managed to make the car lighter. The new TT is generally considered to be a much better driver's car than the original. But is it a true sports car? We recently had the opportunity to spend a week with the top of the line TT-S coupe to find out, so read on to for our assessment.

Gallery: 2009 Audi TT-S

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Review: 2009 Audi TT-S, Fast and Good Looking but Not Quite a Sports Car

Review: 2009 Audi TT-S, Fast and Good Looking but Not Quite a Sports Car originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 21 Oct 2009 08:01:00 EST.
2009 BMW 335d - click above for a high res image gallery

Over the last two years BMW has started making a major push for its new EfficientDynamics technology in Europe and more recently in North America. The premise is that the company that has long promoted itself as the "Ultimate Driving Machine" can retain all the qualities that made it so ultimate while drastically cutting fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. In Europe, BMW offers a suite of technologies like automatic start-stop for engines, brake energy regeneration and smaller four cylinder engines. The most important near term technology however is diesel engines.

Late in 2008, BMW launched its first two new clean diesel vehicles here in the United States, the X5 xDrive35d SUV and the 335d sedan. We recently had a chance to spend a week with the 335d to determine if it truly can provide the driving experience that customers expect of a BMW with better fuel efficiency. Read on to find out if the automaker succeeded.

Gallery: Review: 2009 BMW 335d

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Review: 2009 BMW 335d, Performance and Fuel Economy

Review: 2009 BMW 335d, Performance and Fuel Economy originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 08 Sep 2009 09:01:00 EST.
Rolls-Royce Ghost - click above for a high res image gallery

The new Rolls-Royce Ghost serves to demonstrate that everything is relative. While the Ghost is less large and massive then the Phantom, at 17.7 feet long it is by no means small. In spite a slightly smaller displacement at 6.6-liters, the Ghost's all-new V12 engine takes advantage of the latest technology that it afforded to it by being part of the BMW family to produce far more power than the Phantom. Two turbochargers and direct fuel injection allow the new engine to produce 563 hp and 575 lb-ft of torque.

A look inside tells that unlike the Phantom this is a car meant to appeal as much to the driver as the rear seat passengers. The more supportive front seats and thicker rimmed steering wheel imply a driver might actually want to take advantage of the 4.7 second 0-60 acceleration.

But this is of course a Rolls so rear seat occupants are still coddled in a lounge style seat with power closing coach doors. Within the doors themselves, the Ghost retains the umbrellas found in the Phantom so that no one ever has to get wet. The Ghost is expected to be priced between €200,000 and €300,000 before taxes when it goes on sale.

The full press release is after the jump.

[Source: Rolls-Royce]
Continue reading Officially, official: 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost [w/VIDEO]

Officially, official: 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost [w/VIDEO] originally appeared on Luxist on Sun, 06 Sep 2009 19:01:00 EST.
2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid Platinum Edition - click above for a high res image gallery

Since General Motors debuted its two mode hybrid system two years ago on the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon it has gradually been expanding availability to other examples of its GMT900 full size truck family. One of the newest examples is also by far the most luxurious and most expensive version yet. In fact the Cadillac Escalade hybrid Platinum Edition is the second priciest hybrid available today after the Lexus LS600h.

The base Escalade hybrid is built on the same platform and powertrain bits as its more pedestrian siblings. However, Cadillac has outfitted its version with appearance and equipment that customers of the "wreath and crest" brand expect. For the new Platinum, Cadillac has taken the Escalade several steps beyond that. We were able to spend a week with the big platinum on the South Carolina coast recently and you can find out if it lives up to expectations after the jump.

Gallery: Review: 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid Platinum Edition

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.

Continue reading Review: 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid Platinum Edition

Review: 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid Platinum Edition originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 28 Aug 2009 09:03:00 EST.
It's not often that Bentley introduces an all-new model, especially for its flagship line. Today the Pebble Beach Concours de'Elegance, CEO Franz-Josef Paefgen unveiled the all-new Mulsanne. Named for the legendary straightaway at Le Mans, It's a fitting appellation for the top of the line Bentley. Bentleys won the 24 hour endurance classic four times in a row between 1927 and 1930 ensuring Bentley's reputation for high speed touring for the remainder of century into this century.

The Mulsanne is 11 inches longer than the Flying Spur sedan and gets an all new platform. So far Bentley is only saying that the Mulsanne will use a V8 engine, the same configuration as the outgoing Arnage. Aside from that other details will have to wait until the car is shown again next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The Mulsanne goes on sale about a year from now at a price yet to be revealed, although if you have to ask...

Gallery: 2010 Bentley Mulsanne

[Source: Bentley]
Continue reading Bentley Introduces the all-new 2011 Mulsanne

Bentley Introduces the all-new 2011 Mulsanne originally appeared on Luxist on Sun, 16 Aug 2009 19:02:00 EST.
2009 MINI Cooper Convertible - click above for a high res image gallery

In these troubling economic times, the 2009 MINI Cooper Convertible could be viewed in a couple of different ways. Loaded up with lots of goodies, it could be seen as an entry point into the world of luxury open-top motoring. Alternatively, when times are tough it could be seen as a way to be more financially responsible without giving up all of the amenities you might have come to expect. Either way, the MINI is designed to put a smile on the face of those who drive one.

If your brand is going to be called MINI, you would certainly expect the products to have diminutive dimensions. BMW's British outpost is dedicated to building cars sized commensurate with the brand's name. This August marks the 50th anniversary of the debut of iconic original and while MINIs today are much larger than the originals, they are still among the smallest cars on the road. The second generation of the modern MINI convertible debuted in January at the Detroit Auto Show and went on sale in the spring. We had the opportunity to spend a week in a trimmed out MINI. Read on to find out if it inspires smiles or frowns.

Gallery: Review: 2009 MINI Cooper Convertible

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Max Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Review: 2009 MINI Cooper Convertible

Review: 2009 MINI Cooper Convertible originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 28 Jul 2009 10:01:00 EST.

As we get closer to the Frankfurt Motor Show debut of the new Rolls-Royce Ghost, the automaker is gradually teasing us with more and more information. Today, the folks at Rolls have revealed that the Ghost will definitely be the strong-silent type, thanks to a very powerful new V12 engine. The silent part of course is expected of any Rolls-Royce, hence model names like Ghost and Phantom.

What we don't typically expect is acceleration from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds. Motivating a big luxury machine like the Ghost in that manner takes 563 hp which in this case is generated by a new 6.6-liter V12 with twin turbocharging. This engine is derived from the unit in the new BMW 760Li but will be uniqe to Rolls-Royce. The top speed of the Ghost is electronically governed to 155 mph, but with that much power on tap, it could surely go significantly faster. The Rolls-Royce press release is after the jump.

Gallery: Geneva 2009: Rolls-Royce 200EX

[Source: Rolls-Royce]
Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading New Rolls-Royce Ghost Gets 563 hp turbo V12, sub-5 second 0-60!

New Rolls-Royce Ghost Gets 563 hp turbo V12, sub-5 second 0-60! originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 21 Jul 2009 19:02:00 EST.
2010 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost - click above for a high res image gallery

For nearly a century Cadillac and Lincoln have lived an interesting parallel existence as the two of the premier American luxury automotive brands. Since their founding in 1902 and 1918respectively the two brands have outlived many other brands such as Duesenberg , Cord and Packard. While the two brands have been a part of General Motors and Ford Motor Co. for most of their respective existence, they have common roots in that both companies were founded by Henry Leland. In recent decades both companies have slipped from the pinnacle that they once occupied to be supplanted by German brands like Audi, Mercedes and BMW as well as Lexus, Infiniti and Acura from Japan.

Over the past decade both brands have attempted to claw their way back up the ladder with a variety of new and different products. Cadillac got the head start earlier this decade with a new design language expressed in cars like the CTS, XLR and STS. Lincoln on the other hand took a little longer to find its design footing but is rapidly moving to implement across its lineup. The MKS sedan which debuted in 2008 was first production application of the new style and for 2009 it becomes the first car to get Ford's new EcoBoost V6 engine.
There is no arguing with the fact that Aston Martins are absolutely gorgeous machines. They are also absurdly fast. But if you live in a crowded city like Manhattan, London or Tokyo they are utterly impractical. Like most exotics they can be hard to see out of and who wants to risk getting entangled with a bus or delivery truck? The crew at Aston Martin are now working on the solution.

The Cygnet by Aston Martin is a urban car concept that would give Aston owners a more practical alternative for when they need to head into the city center. The Cygnet is based on Toyota's recently launched iQ micro-car. While Aston doesn't have any confirmed production plans for the Cygnet yet, it could be offered in the future as an accompaniment to "standard" Astons, much like a dinghy for a yacht.

If only we could afford a "standard" Aston Martin on a blogger budget.

[Source: Aston Martin]
Continue reading Aston Martin Goes Small With The New Cygnet Concept

Aston Martin Goes Small With The New Cygnet Concept originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 18:01:00 EST.
2010 Lexus IS350 Convertible - click above for a high res image gallery

February in Chicago would hardly seem like the appropriate backdrop for the debuting a new convertible but that's exactly where Lexus unveiled the new IS. Fortunately the conditions for the IS-C's on-sale date and first drives are somewhat more amenable to top down motoring. We recently had a chance to spend some time with the new IS convertible in both IS250 and IS350 forms.

Like the existing Lexus SC460, chief rival the Infiniti G37, and of course the BMW 3-series, the new IS C has a retractable hard-top that folds into the trunk. The IS is the second best selling model in the Lexus lineup and in the segment it competes in having a convertible seems a natural fit. Come along for the ride and find out if the IS convertible is for you.

Gallery: 2010 Lexus IS Convertible

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading First Drive: 2010 Lexus IS Convertible

First Drive: 2010 Lexus IS Convertible originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 10:02:00 EST.
Bentley's current flagship, the Arnage is the last vestige of old Bentley prior to becoming part of the Volkswagen Group. The luxury automaker is currently in the process of building the 150 final series Arnage models and getting ready to launch a replacement.

That car now dubbed the new Grand Bentley still remains very much a mystery, but the folks in Crewe have released the first teaser image and video of the new car. At this point all we know is that it will bear the famed winged B hood ornament. Bentley will be the featured marque at this year's Pebble Beach Concours and that is expected to to be the site of the Grand Bentley's debut. In the meantime check out the special site for the car at http://www.newgrandbentley.com.

[Source: Bentley]
Continue reading VIDEO: The first teaser emerges for the new Grand Bentley

VIDEO: The first teaser emerges for the new Grand Bentley originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 10 Jun 2009 05:00:00 EST.
click above for a high res gallery of the Audi A4 Avant

In this era of ongoing economic malaise, even those with a taste for German luxury are often finding themselves having to cut back. Or perhaps, they just need something a bit smaller than the A8, 7-series or S-class, yet still befitting of a luxury garage. For those of you, Audi offers up its mid-sized A4. Less than a year ago Audi introduced a completely redesigned A4 to the US market. The latest edition of the A4 is built on an all-new platform that addresses of the complaints of past models and makes this a much more credible competitor to BMW's iconic 3-series.

The A4 is available in two different body styles, a four door sedan and the example that we drove, an A4 Avant. Avant is Audi terminology for what Americans typically call a station wagon. In Europe, this body style is often referred to as an estate, touring car or shooting brake. Whatever, you call it, ever since Audi introduced the 100 Avant in the '80s its wagons have been among the most handsome on the road, and this latest A4 is no exception. Learn what the A4 Avant is like to live with after the jump.

Gallery: Review: 2009 Audi A4 Avant 2.0

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Review: 2009 Audi A4 Avant 2.0T quattro Tiptronic

Review: 2009 Audi A4 Avant 2.0T quattro Tiptronic originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 27 May 2009 09:01:00 EST.
click above for a high res gallery of the 2009 BMW Z4

Ever since BMW unveiled the new 2009 Z4 at the Detroit Auto Show last January, the automaker has been scrupulous about not referring to it as a sports car. Instead the Z4 is the latest generation BMW Roadster. BMW's roadster heritage dates back to the 1930s but this is the third generation of the modern drop top two seaters that began with the Z3 in the early 90s. Like the last transition that saw the Z3 become the Z4, this one has grown and become more sophisticated than its predecessor.

That means it is both more feature rich and heavier than before. The most significant change is the adoption of a retractable hard top for the first replacing the soft top of previous models. The Z4 is the second BMW following the 3-series to go down this path and as with most other examples the two-seater is far more visually appealing. The new Z4 is also more aesthetically pleasing in other ways was well.
Rolls Royce 200EX (Ghost) Concept - Click above for a high-res image gallery

Today in Shanghai China, Rolls Royce CEO Tom Purves announced that the company's new model would be called Ghost. The new smaller Rolls which had been referred to previously as the RR4 was shown as a concept called the 200EX at the Geneva Motor Show in March and will debut in production form at the Frankfurt show this fall. The Ghost uses a stretched version of the platform from the new BMW 760Li including a modified version of the 6.0-liter twin turbocharged V12 engine.

Ghost is a traditional Rolls-Royce name that like Phantom was meant to convey the extremely smooth and quiet operation of these British luxury machines as they slip through the world. The Ghost will eventually spawn coupe and convertible variants as well some time after the four door sedan goes on sale late this year.

Continue reading Shanghai Motor Show 2009: New Rolls-Royce to be named Ghost

Shanghai Motor Show 2009: New Rolls-Royce to be named Ghost originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 20 Apr 2009 15:01:00 EST.
Click above for a high res gallery of the Jaguar XK

Whenever lists of the most beautiful car designs of all time are written, one of the perennial entries is the Jaguar E-Type (known as the XK-E in the US). Originally introduced in 1961, the E-Type was built until 1975, when modern safety and emissions regulations finally brought an end to its run. For the next two decades it was succeeded by the XJ-S which had a strong following but never had the stunning beauty of its predecessor. In 1996 the XK was reborn now under Ford ownership.

While that XK looked the part of a modern interpretation of the E-Type, it's XJ-S derived chassis just wasn't up to the task of a modern GT. In 2006, the XK finally came right when the current generation debuted. The current XK was an all-new design, with an aluminum intensive chassis that cut some 200 pounds while adding the latest technology. We spent a week with a 2009 XK coupe that you can read about after the jump.

Gallery: 2009 Jaguar XK Coupe

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Review: 2009 Jaguar XK 4.2 Coupe

Review: 2009 Jaguar XK 4.2 Coupe originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 02 Apr 2009 09:02:00 EST.
Click the 200EX for a high-res gallery

Rolls Royce officially unveiled its 200EX concept in Geneva this week as the precursor to the fourth model in its lineup and the first not based on the immense Phantom. For the moment the 200EX is just a concept but this fall the production version will be revealed with a proper name, one likely to start with Silver. Compared to the Phantom this new model is some 18" shorter and is designed to be far less formal.

In spite of that "informality" this is absolutely a Rolls-Royce through and through. The interior is trimmed in the finest hides and wood veneers. This is clearly a more driver oriented car as evidenced by the thicker rim and smaller diameter on the steering wheel. However, those that prefer to have someone else handle the piloting duties will still find the rear compartment of the 200EX a very hospitable location with the lounge style seating well back of the C-pillar along with the coach style rear hinged doors.

The new grille with the vertical slats set back further from the frame is now meant to evoke more of a jet engine intake than a Greek temple. Rolls-Royce has not indicated a price range yet but it will undoubtedly be in keeping with Rolls tradition.

Gallery: Geneva 2009: Rolls-Royce 200EX

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.

Geneva 2009: Rolls-Royce introduces the 200EX originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 04 Mar 2009 14:02:00 EST.
Click for a high res gallery of the Aston Martin One-77

Aston Martin fully revealed its ultimate car, the One-77 today at the Geneva Motor Show. Aston Martins have always been special but the One-77 takes it to a whole new level. The 6.0L V12 found in more "pedestrian" Astons has been expanded out to 7.3L and the output is now in excess of 700 hp with a top speed in excess of 200 mph. Apparently the only thing not in excess for this very special sports car is the production volumes. Only 77 examples will be built with a price tag well in excess of $1 million! No word yet on whether Daniel Craig will have one available for the next James Bond outing.

Gallery: Geneva 2009:Aston Martin One-77

Continue reading Geneva 2009: Aston Martin One-77 revealed!

Geneva 2009: Aston Martin One-77 revealed! originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 03 Mar 2009 18:02:00 EST.

When we next see Agent 007 hit the big screen, this car may well be his new ride. After providing Bond with an Aston Martin DBS coupe during the last two movies, Aston Martin will introduce the DBS Volante at next week's Geneva Motor Show. In order to preserve the voluptuous profile of the DBS with the top down, Aston has opted to stick with a fabric top rather than a bulkier retractable hard-top. The top can be stowed away in just 14 seconds even when the car is moving at speeds up to 30 mph. Once the top is down or up, the 510 hp V12 can push the DBS Volante up to speeds of 191 mph! Inside the cockpit the driver and passenger will as always be ensconced in the highest quality hides and veneers. The DBS Volante will be delivered starting in third quarter of 2009.

Gallery: Aston Martin DBS Volante

[Source: Aston Martin]
Continue reading Aston Martin reveals DBS Volante for Geneva Motor Show

Aston Martin reveals DBS Volante for Geneva Motor Show originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 25 Feb 2009 18:01:00 EST.
Click the Phantom for a high res gallery

For over a century two words have been synonymous with high end luxury motoring, Rolls-Royce. To this day, Rolls-Royce remains at the pinnacle of the automotive world. Owning a Roller truly means you have made it. At the end of the last century the company was reborn after a bidding battle between Volkswagen and BMW left the latter company owning the name but nothing else. BMW funded a brand-new factory and a brand-new car that revived the Phantom name.

Going into 2009, the Phantom is getting its first real revision since its debut and even those changes are subtle. The original Phantom sedan that debuted in 2003 was followed by drop-head and hard-top coupes in 2007 and 2008. The Phantom sedan gets a new fascia similar to the one on the coupes. The grille is now slightly shallower and the corners are no longer quite as sharply creased as before. The bumper also has smoother contours allowing the front of this behemoth to force its way through the air with slightly less effort than before. Rolls-Royce brought the very first production example of this updated Phantom to Southern California where we had a chance to sample and photograph it. Learn more about the changes and what it's like to guide this massive machine down the road after the jump.

Gallery: 2009 Rolls-Royce Phantom

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Rolls-Royce 200EX

The newest addition to the Rolls-Royce model lineup still a year away from production but we'll be getting a preview in two weeks at the Geneva Motor Show. The car that until now has been referred to as the RR4 will appear as a concept called 200EX. When the production version of the 200EX hits the streets in 2010 it will be the fourth Rolls-Royce model since the company was reborn under BMW ownership in 2003. Compared to the Phantom saloon, the 200EX is about 18 inches shorter but it remains a big machine spanning 212.6 inches from bumper to bumper.

Rolls-Royce isn't revealing to many technical details yet but we do know that like the Phantom, the 200EX/RR4 will have V12 power. The new car will however get an all-new engine not shared with any other car. The new Roller retains the rear hinged coach (don't call them suicide) doors but its more modest size means this is likely to be more of a drivers car than the Phantom. As with any Rolls-Royce, the interior will be impeccably finished in the finest hides, wood veneers and fabrics. The final production version (and presumably its name) will debut this fall at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Gallery: Rolls-Royce 200EX Concept

[Source: Rolls-Royce]
Continue reading Rolls-Royce 200EX Making its World Debut at the Geneva Motor Show

Rolls-Royce 200EX Making its World Debut at the Geneva Motor Show originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 20 Feb 2009 18:01:00 EST.
Click for a high-res gallery of the Panamera Interior

For those that clamor for a Porsche and need real room for four occupants but can't stand the thought of driving a Cayenne, the Panamera is coming. Porsche released the first official photos of the Panamera's exterior in late November which generated a lot of controversy about the rear styling. Now that we can see the interior, it appears that the rear roof profile shape may have been driven by the desire to accommodate four actual adults in the car. In keeping with its price tag, the interior is clearly very upscale. The switchgear on the center console looks like it could be on one of Nokia's luxury Vertu cell phones with a large touch screen display dominating the center of the dashboard.

Unlike the upholstered shelves in the back of a 911, rear passengers in the Panamera get virtually the same accommodations as the driver. The Panamera goes on sale in Europe in September with a US launch one month later. At launch all Panameras will be powered by either 400 hp normally aspirated V8 or a 500 hp tubo version with prices starting at $89,800. As usual Porsche's nearly infinite range of factory customization options that are limited only by the owners bank balance will be available. A version using Porsche's new hybrid system should arrive either later in 2010 or 2011.

Gallery: 2010 Porsche Panamera Interior

Click the Model S to enlarge

Tesla Motors sent out a newsletter to its many fans late last night with an update on the state of the business and a preview of what's coming up next. While the Roadster is an outstanding sports car, a tiny two seater is certainly not for everyone, especially at a starting price of $109,000. Therefore, Tesla has been working on a follow-up the Model S sport sedan. Like it's little brother, this one is battery powered but has the ability to carry four. With an entry price of $57,500 (before assorted plug-in vehicle tax credits kick in) the Model S has the potential zero emissions luxury motoring to a whole new crowd. So far this teasing lift of the hem-line is all we've been allowed to see, but those in the know say it is worth the wait. That wait by the way will be six more weeks. Tesla will unveil the Model S to a select group of VIPs on March 26 in Los Angeles. Now if Tesla can just get the loans it needs from the DOE to make the Model S a reality, it could be on the road by 2011.

[Sources: Tesla, AutoblogGreen]
Continue reading Tesla Shows a Little Thigh Ahead of Unveiling the Model S on March 26

Tesla Shows a Little Thigh Ahead of Unveiling the Model S on March 26 originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 21:02:00 EST.
For the last several years Mercedes-Benz has been collaborating with its Formula One partner to produce the SLR supercar. The half million dollar 617 hp SLR has been a popular ride with celebutantes such as Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. However the SLR is coming to the end of its production run and with that Mercedes is building a special edition that probably won't appeal much to those who prefer to keep their hair in order.

The SLR Stirling Moss is named for the British driver who conquered the Mille Miglia in 1955 in the original 300 SLR. Like that famous racing car the new Stirling Moss has no top or even a windshield for that matter. What it does have is even more power than before with 650 hp. For those with deep pockets and no fear of mussing their hair, Mercedes will only be building 75 examples of the SLR Stirling Moss before shutting down the line permanently. For those looking for serious speed and wind in the hair, the last 75 SLRs will be priced at €750,000.

Gallery: Mercedes Benz SLR Stirling Moss

[Source: Mercedes-Benz]
Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Mercedes Introduces ?750,000 Limited Edition SLR Stirling Moss

Mercedes Introduces ?750,000 Limited Edition SLR Stirling Moss originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 22 Jan 2009 18:02:00 EST.
click for a high res gallery of the reveal of the Lexus HS250h

Lexus wasn't the first Japanese automaker to launch a premium brand in North America (that title belongs to Acura) but it has been the most successful. Last week on the 20th anniversary of the launch of the original LS400 at the Detroit Auto Show, Lexus did debut a true first. The new HS250h is the world's first dedicated luxury hybrid which means it's only available with combined gas and electric drive. There is no non-hybrid version of the HS250h which is derived from the Prius.

Toyota created the HS250h for those wanted to combine the green cachet of driving the fuel efficiency icon without having the sacrifice the features and finish they expect in a Lexus. That means the hard plastic and goofy gauges of the Prius are replaced by soft touch surfaces, leather seating and goodies like lane departure prevention, heads up display and even a camera in the grille to let the driver check blind spots and prevent running up on curbs. As with all of its models, Lexus has promised that the HS250h will provide the quiet and comfort they expect from the brand.

Some celebrities may opt to go with the new Prius which is expected to get 50 mpg, but for those that want to ride in more style the Lexus HS250h should still get city mileage numbers in the mid-thirties, beating the tiny Smart ForTwo. The HS250h goes on sale in late summer at a price yet to be announced. You can check out video of the HS250h after the jump.

Gallery: Lexus HS250h

[Source: Toyota]
Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Lexus HS250h: The World's First Luxury Dedicated Hybrid

Lexus HS250h: The World's First Luxury Dedicated Hybrid originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 21 Jan 2009 11:02:00 EST.
Click the FX50 for a high-res gallery

In the waning years of the SUV craze a variety of premium automakers jumped into the segment in an attempt to cash in. But since it just wouldn't do for the likes of Audi, BMW or Infiniti to just simply have another truck based wagon, they had to differentiate themselves. Infiniti decided to inject a healthy dose of sport into the SUV equation when it introduced the original FX45 in 2003 and upped the anti with the redesigned 2009 model that debuted last summer.

One way get a vehicle with a sporty character is to start with a sports car platform, which is precisely what Infiniti did. The FX is based on the architecture of the Nissan 370Z although you would never guess by looking at it. Since one of the best reasons for driving an SUV is the all weather capability, we took the FX50 that Infiniti sent over on pre-Christmas ski trip that just happened to coincide with a major snow storm. Find out how it fared after the jump.

Gallery: 2009 Infiniti FX50 S

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Luxist Review: 2009 Infiniti FX50 S, putting the sport in SUV

Luxist Review: 2009 Infiniti FX50 S, putting the sport in SUV originally appeared on Luxist on Sun, 18 Jan 2009 16:02:00 EST.
Click the Fisker Karma Sunset concept for a high res gallery

Detroit MI in January is not generally the kind of place you associate with open top motoring. In fact 9 inches of fresh snow the day before the press previews started were followed by temperatures dropping to near zero by mid-week. Nonetheless veteran car designer Henrick Fisker showed off the production version of his plug-in hybrid Karma sport sedan and a new concept for an open-top version to follow up in 2011. The Karma and Karma Sunset concept are targeted at those who are tired of rolling up to award show red-carpets in a lowly Toyota but don't want to give up their "green cred."

The Sunset draws on the styling themes that first appeared on the Karma when it debuted at last year's Detroit Auto Show. In either sedan and convertible variations, the cabin is pushed well toward the back with the classic long hood proportions and voluptuously curved fenders. Fisker's cars are propelled by an extended range electric drive system not unlike that in the upcoming Chevy Volt, but with much more power. The Karma is claimed to be able to go 50 miles on a charge of its lithium ion battery before the 260 hp turbocharged engine starts up to recharge the battery.

Inside, the green luxury theme continues with wood trim exclusively from salvaged trees that are fallen from age or fire or recovered from lakes. The rest of the interior can be trimmed out in either leather made with so-called sustainable processes or a special fabric made from bamboo fibers which is remarkably soft in spite of its source. The Karma sedan is available for pre-order now at a starting price of $87,900.
