Now here's a zebra print I actually like. The Zebra Canvas Shoulder Pouch by Temperley London is a little muted but still very much recognizable and fashion forward. Done in brown and blush in cotton canvas (another reason I like it!), it has brown leather trim and goldtone hardware. The drawstring top gives it a cute pouchy shape while the circular leather base helps it to both hold it's shape and stay sitting up when you set it down. The leather drawstring is pulled through large leather loops and the matching leather handle has a woven circular pattern at the top. One internal pouch pocket in the pale salmon lining, $600.

Zingerman's Bakehouse of Ann Arbor, Michigan, is nominated for a Luxist Award in the best bread bakery category. Zingerman's is one of the 'younger' nominees, having just come into existence in 1992 as a way for the Zingerman's Deli to have their own freshly baked bread. First there was bread (1992), then there were pastries (1994), and eventually a retail shop opened (1996). Today the Bakehouse is comprised of a group of 130 dedicated foodies and skilled artisan bakers that use traditional methods to hand make all of their breads and sweets and sell to over 100 wholesale customers in addition to a growing crowd of retail shoppers.

Zingerman's Bakehouse prides itself on being run by regular people that simply love to bake, and love to share their baked goods with others. And when it comes to sharing they don't stop at simply selling bread, in 2006 Zingerman's launched BAKE!, a hands-on teaching bakery where experts and newbies alike can learn to make their own scrumptious breads, pastries, and cakes at home.

Max Poilane is nominated for a Luxist Award in the Best Bread Bakery category. It all started more than 70 years ago when Pierre-Léon Poilane, Max Poilane's father, moved to Paris from Normandy and started a bakery. Contrasting with France's famous fluffy white French loaves, the Poilane bakery brought a signature miche, or sourdough loaf made from stone-milled gray flour that makes for richer, more nutritious baked goods that last longer (up to a week in some cases).

The Max Poilane Bakery, as it is today, came to be many years later (in the 1960s) when Max and his brother Lionel had a falling out and Max Poilane left the family business to start his own bakery on the other side of town. Tensions ran high over the following years and even included a lawsuit over legal rights to the name 'Poilane' (the courts ruled Max Poilane had the right to use his own name). Emotions are still tense today but the Max Poilane Bakery continues to put out delicious baked goods made in a very simple, artisanal way that holds true to family tradition.

The bakery is famous mostly for its fresh bread, although it does offer pastries and other baked goods as well. So next time you're in Paris you could do well to stop by and pick up some of their 'pain,' if just for the experience. Also, there's a fascinating video on YouTube showing how the bakery's famous bread is made.

Zingerman's Mail Order has been nominated for a Luxist Award in the Best Online Gourmet Food category. The original Zingerman's Delicatessen was started in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1982 by Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig. It offered a combination of specialty foods, traditional Jewish dishes, and a few sandwiches.

Over the years Zingerman's grew steadily, adding (among others) a bakery, a creamery, a couple of restaurants, and a mail order business to sell it all. Zingerman's Mail Order offers a little bit of everything, all wrapped up in personal touches like excellent customer service and a website that displays everything in charming artistic renditions of reality.

Di Bruno Bros. is nominated for a Luxist Award in the Best Online Gourmet Goods category. It got its start way back in 1939 when two Italian brothers, Danny and Joe Di Bruno, after emigrating from Italy, decided to open a grocery in in the Italian Market in Philadelphia. Their dream was focused around family and community. "A smile doesn't cost you anything," Joe would tell his grandsons. Their store became a touchstone for the community; each customer that walked in the store was treated like family.

Eventually, the store turned from a traditional grocery to having more gourmet imports in honor of the brothers' European roots. Their business and the Di Bruno reputation in the community has continued to grow over the years, and now in addition to the original storefront in the Italian Market there are three other Philadelphia locations and an online shop that makes their products available nationwide. It remains a family business to this day.

To this day, nothing compares to the Di Bruno Bros. experience. Murray's Cheese in Manhattan is nominated for a Luxist Award in the Best Cheese Shop category.

Murray's Cheese started as a humble little egg and butter shop back in 1940, opened by a Spanish civil war veteran named Murray Greenberg who would buy cheese on the cheap and resell it. The shop has changed hands only a couple of times over all of the last 60-some years, and has had a few different addresses too, but one thing has stayed the same: it's always sold great cheese and dairy.

Great cheese hasn't always been gourmet cheese, however. As recently as 10 years ago, under the management of current owner Rob Kaufelt, Murray's started to 'get serious about the good stuff' and focus on selling high-end cheeses for people who know the difference. It was a slow start for the pricier inventory but today the shop is packed with customers (even in this tough economy) willing to pay upwards of $20 or $30 for a block of exquisitely flavorful and sometimes very rare cheese.

Murray's Cheese has rolled with the punches and maintained its neighborhood feel throughout many years of change, and now thanks to technology even if you don't live in the Manhattan or New York area you can still enjoy shopping via the website, mail order service, or even the gift catalog complete with a "cheese of the month" club option.

Different breads have different shelf-lives, but as a general rule the more moisture a bread has in it the longer it will keep.
  • 1-2 days French and Italian loaves
  • 2-3 days White, Wheat, and Sourdough
  • 3-5 days Rye breads
Bread Storage Basics:
  • Breads with a hard, crispy crust should be stored in paper.
  • Breads with a softer crust and more moisture should be kept in a plastic bag or other airtight container.
  • All bread should be kept in a cool, dry place.
  • Bread should never be kept in the refrigerator (actually makes it go stale faster)
  • Bread should be allowed to sit in the open until completely cool or mold growth will be accelerated
  • Bread can be frozen and will keep for several months. Just wrap tightly in plastic and freeze.

The important thing to note is that although wine that's been opened for too long might not taste good for drinking anymore but that doesn't mean it's unsafe to ingest. You can certainly pour it out (many people do) but why not do some experimenting with it in the kitchen and try using it in some recipes or try your hand at making your own vinegar?

Ideas for using leftover wine:
- Add flavor and body to tomato-based sauces
- Deglaze pans after roasting meat
- Braise vegetables in it
- Cook it down for use as a sauce and glaze base
- Use it in fondue
- Use it as a marinade for beef, chicken, and fish
- Make your own vinegar by simply letting it sit or by following this recipe

Some argue that you should only cook with wine you would also be willing to drink, but much of what makes wine taste good originally gets lost in the cooking process anyway. It's really just about personal preference.

Nowadays there are fondue recipes for every course of a meal, from cheese to meat to chocolate, and hosting a fondue party has become a popular and easy way to have a classy social gathering. Fondue can be served as an appetizer, dessert, or even a full 3-course meal.

Cheese Fondue Traditionally cheese fondue is made with a blend of 2 or more cheeses, wine, and perhaps some spices or other seasonings. Offer an assortment of bread, vegetables, and fruit (granny smith apples pair surprisingly well with cheese) cut into bite-sized pieces for a first course, and maybe a light salad or broth-based soup if desired.

Communal Cooking is the center of the main course, along with seasonings and dipping sauces. Cubes of beef, chicken, shrimp, and seafood can be individually seasoned by your guests and cooked at the table (in a fondue mixture of butter, cooking oil, and seasonings) to suit their personal preferences. A variety of dipping sauces can provide even more flavor options, as well as plenty of fresh vegetables and bread for balance.

Chocolate Fondue As a final course anything goes when dipping into chocolate (the sky's the limit!) but one of the most popular choices is fresh strawberries or bananas. Other dipping choices for dessert include squares of cheesecake, brownies, angel food cake, and even marshmallows. Graham crackers and cookies make a nice option as well, along with possibly offering caramel or marshmallow-based dips.

Etiquette
Fondue is a communal experience and although traditionally all guests would eat from and then dip their forks repeatedly into the same pot, today's society dictates a different approach (unless of course you're all family and don't mind). Instead try having guests dip into the pot with the fondue fork and then use a separate fork to slide the bread, meat, or fruit onto a plate before eating it.

Finally, offer a variety of recipes, plenty of items to dip, and don't be afraid to experiment! Part of what makes fondue an interesting experience is the opportunity to blend, mix, and experiment with different flavors and flavor combinations.

As with all things wine, it depends on many factors. Red wine, white wine, young wine, old wine, the list goes on. Oxidation is both a friend and an enemy. A freshly opened bottle often benefits from sitting open for a few minutes before serving in order to allow the oxygen to seep in and bring out the flavors and aromas in their full-bodied glory, but too much time exposed to the air and all those wonderful characteristics start to slowly turn unpleasant and eventually the wine will be dull, sour, and not nearly as fragrant. It's a slow process and it really comes down to personal taste, because no matter how long an opened bottle sits it won't become unsafe to drink -- just unpleasant.

The quick, very general answer on how long an opened bottle of wine keeps is 3 days. All wines will keep at least one day without changing for the worst, and many aged reds can last up to a week. Factors to keep in mind:
  • The age of the wine The longer the wine was aged the longer it will retain its desirable characteristics after being opened. Young wine is more susceptible to the effects of oxidation.
  • How much is left The fuller the bottle the longer the wine will last, due to less room for oxygen. Consider transferring leftovers into a smaller bottle
  • Sugar and alcohol content Sugar and alcohol act as preservatives so dessert wines, ports, and sherries can keep much longer (up to a year in some cases).
When it doubt smell it and taste it. If you like it drink it! If you don't, either discard it or find another use for it. There are no hard and fast rules so make your own.

Cheddar One of most widely used cheeses here in the States, cheddar cheese is made from cow's milk and was first 'born' in England in a little village called Cheddar. It comes in mild, medium, and sharp varieties and can be off-white to dark orange in color.

Blue Cheese is a white cheese with unique blue/black spots and veins in it that are the result of mold. Made from a combination of sheep, goat, and cow's milk, blue cheese has a both a strong smell and a very strong flavor -- for many it's an acquired taste.

Swiss Originating in Switzerland, Swiss cheese is unique for its 'eyes' which are the holes left by bubbles that form during the aging process. The larger the 'eyes' the more intense the flavor.

Feta originated in Greece and is made with a combination of sheep and goat's milk. It's a white, soft or semi-firm cheese that is aged for several months and has a mild to strong tangy flavor.

Asiago cheese hails from the Asiago High Plateau in Italy (at least originally) and has a full, nutty-flavor. It comes in two main varieties, Fresh Asiago made from whole milk and Asiago d' Allevo made from part-skim milk and aged much longer.

Brie is a soft, light white to yellow cheese with a thick, somewhat tasteless, edible rind. It originated in France and is traditionally made with raw milk, meaning true Brie is not available in the United States due to pasturization laws. Many pasteurized varieties are available, however, and are usually enjoyed sliced with fruit or bread.

Limburger Perhaps most famous for its "stinkiness," Limburger cheese originated in Belgium (before becoming popular in Germany) and gets its trademark odor from bacteria living in the rind. The cheese itself, made from cow's milk, has a mild tangy flavor and is often enjoyed with beer.

Burgundy/Summer Truffle Originally from France, Italy, and Spain but now also found in Sweden and New Zealand, Summer Truffles are most abundant in the mid-summer months and have a light scent with a black or burgundy exterior and a much lighter interior.

Chinese Truffles are native to Southern China, have a fairly mild aroma, and are usually less expensive than other varieties.

Desert Truffles are also sometimes called 'lightning truffles' because of their fast growth habit after a rain. Found in Africa and the Middle East, they grow just under the sand after a thunderstorm alongside the roots of rock roses.

I like anything earthy and organic, and rattan with turtle fits that bill. Tightly woven rattan makes up the entirety of this small handbag save for one adornment: a little turtle featuring bright pink galuchat for character. Evoking vibes of the sandy seashore, this Rattan Turtle Handbag by Lotus Arts de Vivre is both perfect for carrying a few necessary essentials on a weekend day or for holding your mirror and money at an evening beach party. No word from the Vivre page on whether it's lined or has a wristlet or shoulder strap attached, but I think I like it best without anyway. $850

Seems like most of the mobile bars I see are stainless steel, which looks nice but is also very cold and modern. I prefer the coziness that comes with a bar like this one, the Italian Leather Bar by Serge de Troyer. Made of Iguana-embossed Italian leather and styled like a large trunk, it exudes comfortable elegance in the form of mirrored double doors that open to reveal a fully functional bar inside with padded leather drawers, a sliding glass shelf, slots for glassware and plenty of room for large and small bottles. The exterior detailing includes leather straps and chrome studs, and of course wheels for easy mobility and accessibility. $8,500

I think I've said this before but sometimes a handbag makes "points" with me just by having an interesting name, and I think 'Tree Bucket Bag' qualifies as interesting. Not sure how the name was inspired other than it certainly is bucket-shaped. Designed by Genevieve Jones those aren't silver studs all over the black leather exterior but instead glitzy little Swarovski crystals that give the whole thing a sort of upscale biker-chic vibe, or as Vivre says "a little punk, a little boho." Regardless, it's cute and edgy and has just the right dose of casual for someone like me. $875

A combination of elephant and man. This is one very interesting piece of artwork, and although I think it's more than a little strange I can still appreciate it is beautiful in it's own way. Called 'People Belong to Elephant' it's part of a collection by artist Chen Changwei that's based on the Chinese zodiac. I came across this piece at Vivre and as far as I can right now they're only carrying three of the zodiac sculptures (see them in the gallery) but I'm curious to see the rest. As part of a limited edition of only 8, this People Belong to Elephant sculpture stands 31" tall and is available as part of Daum's China Collection for $76,500.

Passionate about supporting the American way and the Los Angeles manufacturing revival, all of his Handmade Patchwork Neckties are made in a small workshop in the heart of L.A. and each pattern, full of details, has significance and meaning. In the photo above Simms is wearing "Lost Library," which takes its inspiration from dusty broken-spined books filled with a paradox of both intelligence and toughness.

"Showered" in oversized light-reflecting paillettes with black beading accents, other features include goldtone hardware, black leather trim, an adjustable and detachable shoulder strap, push-lock closure and a black satin lining. A gorgeous, timeless, clutch that exudes classic feminine appeal with a little dose of flashy party attitude. I just hope those paillettes are tough to enough to hold on for more than one season. $950
