Style and functionality come together easily in the Eames Managment Chair. Designed in 1958, when the word "ergonomic" was young and rarely used outside of research papers, its lightweight and body-hugging form was ahead of its time. The thin mesh backing is self-contouring and flexible, for "even weight distribution and long-term comfort." The mesh-backed chair is available in three colors, but the design is also available with other materials and in other colors at different price points. Price (for mesh): $1,188.

Pits that use real wood have an authentic feel to them, but the smell and smoke often keep people away, rather than inviting them in . The River Stone Gas Fire Pit has the look of a real wood-burning fire pit, but is powered by gas and turns on a roaring blaze (40,000 BTUs of heat) with the touch of a button. The modular Cloud Shelving Unit not only looks cloud-like, but is as light as a feather compared to most other shelving units. It is made of high-density polystyrene and comes in four colors, including the white pictured above. It was designed by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec in 2004 with the idea that the extensions of the unit would be limitless, as the circular pieces could be added on to almost infinitely. Each individual unit measures 73.8" x 15.75" x 41.4".
The Optimus Keyboard is a revolutionary piece of hardware - at least, it is for those whose top priority is making sure their computer peripherals will outshine everyone else's. Each of the key's on the 114-key keyboard has a 32x32 pixels full-color OLED display screen. The screens will display the QWERTY letters during normal functioning, but can be completely reprogrammed to suit the user's preferences. Downloadable themes will be available at some point in the future, as well. It is scheduled for release later this year and carries a price tag of $1,490.

Unless you're a celebrity, however, odds are that you're not likely to make it into the main collection any time soon. But that doesn't mean that you can't have your own likeness sculpted from wax, should you be interested in such a thing. Brightly colored towels or books would give the bag color and brightness, and beach accessories are much more appropriate for clear bags than everyday wallets, keys and mobile phones are. The bag measures 12"H X 18"L X 5"W and has double shoulder straps and protective feet. The top is open, but there is a small flap closure in the center. The tote also comes with a detachable zippered pouch for storing small valuables and/or keys. Those of use with the hot, dry weather didn't have much use for umbrellas over the past couple of weeks, but spring could still bring some showers, right? In fact, it looks more like a garden-variety purse (or shoulder bag, as some might say) than anything else. That being said, it is a nice looking bag. It features a body made of smooth, white leather that is accented with navy blue velvet. The clasp, charms and chain links on the shoulder strap are all of gold-tone metal, as are the protective feet on the bottom of the bag. It measures 13" x 8" x 4".
Metals - steel, gold, platinum and a score of others - are the most popular materials for watch-making these days, but that was not always the case. In the past, there were some designers who liked to push the limits of their technical capabilities by making watches out of more unusual materials, such as wood or bone. The Bronnikov Bone Watch is one of only about 250 surviving bone watches made by the Russian Bronnikov family in the mid 1800's. The only parts that are not made of bone are the main-spring, balance-spring and pivots. It measures 50mm across and is valued at over $25,000.

Bronnikov Bone Watch originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 15 Mar 2007 16:04:00 EST. The Crystal Wooden Clutch is made in Italy of smooth, high-gloss wood and measures just 5 1/4" x 3 1/2" x 1 1/2". Each clutch snaps closed at the top with a jeweled clasp, which matches the Swarovski crystals embedded in the body of the clutch. The arrangement of the crystals varies and the three finishes are Ebony, Nut and Ebony-Hamptons Edition (pictured).
When you have a yard for your pets to play in, it is lovely to be able to let them out just to be animals for a bit. A pet door is just about the only way to give them easy access to the great outdoors at all times without having to sit by the door. Unfortunately, many doors are not really conducive to having pet doors - traditional ones, at least - installed. Hale Pet Doors has a fantastic custom pet door that is designed to work in French doors, where a pane of glass is replaced with a barely noticeable flap. Sizes vary, but you can't beat the subtlety of the design. And your pets will be happy, too! Prices range from $115 - $465, depending on model.

Pet Doors in French Doors originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 13 Mar 2007 15:02:00 EST.
Looking to cut its losses after a year of record losses, Ford Motor Co. has sold luxury brand Aston Martin back to the UK via a group of investors led by auto-racing champion David Richards. The Aston Martin brand made up a small portion of Ford's luxury group, which includes Jaguar and Land Rover, as well. Although Ford said it expected Aston Martin to make up 1/3 of their luxury sales when they decided to promote the brand more heavily over five years ago (they have owned full interest since 1994), it hasn't come close. Sales of the luxe sports cars make up less than 1% of the automaker's global sales volume. The selling price was $848 million, as the total value of the unit is estimated to be $925 million and Ford is retaining a $77 million stake.
Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Aston Martin Sold Back to UK originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 12 Mar 2007 15:05:00 EST.
Several months ago, we mentioned that Donald Trump intended to release a furniture line. Insiders were being tight-lipped about the project at the time, but now Trump Home has a debut date. Designed and produced in conjunction with Lexington Home Brands, Trump Home will first meet the public eye during the High Point furniture market in North Carolina at the end of the month.

The line consists of two collections, Westchester and Central Park, both described as "a beautiful group of luxurious furniture at an affordable price." Each piece was "personally signed off on" by Trump. Westchester was inspired by historic mansions and other, older and more ornate properties. Central Park is more modern, more urban and more New York in feel.

Trump Home Release Announced originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 12 Mar 2007 10:02:00 EST.
Last week saw the launch of the Louis Vuitton Tribute Patchwork Bag, which considering price and exclusivity, could very well become the next "it" bag for celebs and fashionistas. The large shopper has a noticeable gold chain handle, but the thing that makes it stand out is that it is made up of samples of 15 different Louis Vuitton Handbags from the LV spring/summer and cruise lines. "It takes all the best parts of the season's creations and rolls them into one. We are confident that the bag is utterly exclusive and that it will remain so," said a spokesman. The bag is limited edition and each one is numbered. Price: £23,484 ($45,352).

Louis Vuitton Tribute Patchwork Bag, (World's Most Expensive) Handbag of the Day originally appeared on Luxist on Sun, 11 Mar 2007 17:02:00 EST. The image inspires the feeling of comfort that comes from good food and family, as well as just the "right" amount of rusticity (by which we mean "not too much"). The Inverness Picnic Table has a round design with four individual attached stool-top seats. The table is designed by Tom Seymour and is made up of 5,000 sheets of paper. They don't appear to have the signature sticky bars that make post-it notes postable, but then again you might not want to adhere such large pieces of paper to your fridge to begin with. Price: £700.

If you golf when you travel, or if you travel to golf, the new Puma Golf Travel Bag is pretty much a must-have item, especially if you don't enjoy lugging a heavy, unwieldy golf bag through the airport. The Puma bag is lightweight and multipurpose. It has room inside it for a full set of clubs (held in place in the picture above by the light-colored Puma Golf Quiver Bag - $90) and room around the sides for clothing and golf accessories. It also includes two removable garment bags for added convenience/storage. Price: $240.

Puma Golf Travel Bag originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 10 Mar 2007 14:05:00 EST. If you live to be eighty, that will add up to 233,600 hours - and we're not counting non-sleep time spent in bed. With that much time spent in it, it is worth it to spring for something that will really set you up for a good night's sleep. The Vividus is a high-end bed that doesn't justify its $50,000+ price tag (increasing to $59,750 in April) on looks alone. The Swedish-designed bed from Hastens is made "from latex, flax, memory foam, silk, cashmere, lambswool and hand-tufted horse hair," all used specifically to enhance comfort and the sleep experience. Each bed is handmade, and not even a dozen have been sold since the beds launched in July.

Vividus Bed originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 09 Mar 2007 16:04:00 EST.
The original Pink Panther car is up for sale on eBay. The heavily customized limo was made by Hollywood car specialist Jay Ohrberg, who was also responsible for cars like the Batmobile and KITT. The car comes with written permission from MGM "to show this car and use the Pink Panther name" at car shows or other events - which is good, as it isn't exactly street-legal.

The car was actually listed a few weeks ago, but the original auction was deleted. Autoblog says that the price (only one bid) went up to £75,000 sometime before it got shut down. This time around, the price is only up to £15,000 ($29,000 approx.) and the reserve is not yet met.

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Auctions

Own the Pink Panther Car originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 08 Mar 2007 16:08:00 EST. The long black trench is bulletproof, stab-proof and, of course, weatherproof, so no bullets, knives, "hypodermic needles, ice picks, knives and broken bottles " will penetrate it. Think of it as stylish full-body armor. This makes it the sort of jacket that you would want if you regularly tour through war-zones or exceptionally hostile neighborhoods late at night, although it will certainly give you a sense of security no matter where you go. It features two large front pockets and a high-rise collar to block the chill, as well. Price: $2,000.

Leather zipper pulls and side buckles add to the strapped in look (hence the name) and decorative stitching finishes off the purse. The bag measures 16"W x 6 1/2"H x 7"D, but is flexible enough to accommodate things of various sizes and dimensions. The sleek scratcher is made of solid pine and is available with birch, cherry or mahogany stains. It has ledges for perching, carpeted areas for scratching and a cubbyhole at the base that serves as a hiding place, as well as for support. The curving, balanced design is pleasing to the eye, which is a huge plus, as its height of almost 6 feet (69") will make it a focal point in the room. Well known chefs, like Charlie Trotter, are using them in their high-end restaurants with great success, and now the ovens are ready for home use, as well. The high-end "performance ovens" are incredibly fast and produce results that are equivalent to, if not better than, those from a traditional oven. A 3 1/2 pound chicken, for example, can roast in 14 minutes. The oven is incredibly simple to use and the purchase price can be made up in time saved alone. Price: $8,000.

TurboChef Speed Ovens originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 07 Mar 2007 10:09:00 EST. The one used on this Animalier Leopard Canvas Bag, in spite of the fact that the word leopard is used in the name, appears to be that of an ocelot because of the way that the spots converge into an almost straight black line (where the spin would be on an actual animal). The pattern is fairly regular and very well-laid out. This bag is an excellent choice for those who would prefer not to have the skin of a rare wild cat hanging from their arm because it is made of canvas. Real leather is, however, used on the trim. The large tote measures 11"H X 16"L X 8"W.
Russian President Vladimir Putin really knows how to fly. His Ilyushin 96-300 jet packs enough bling to put almost anyone else's wings to shame. Just about everything inside the plane is gold-plated, from the taps and shower in the bathroom to the table legs and the seatbelt clasps. And that bathroom, as you might suspect from the fact that it has a full shower, is far larger than any you'll find on an ordinary plane.

Putin's plane also boasts silk-covered walls, leather seats ("upholstered by the same company that Aston Martin uses"), and a full conference room. There are flat-screen entertainment systems and, so guests will really feel at home, a dishwasher, cooker and fridge/freezer.

The plane is valued at over $19 million.
