The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong yesterday announced the opening of their 16th property in Asia, which boasts the title of "highest hotel in the world." Located at the very top of the International Commerce Centre (ICC) in Hong Kong and occupying floors 102 to 118, the hotel takes the honors away from the current title holder in Dubai.

"The opening of this landmark hotel in Hong Kong is the culmination of many years of hard work and dedication to delivering the very best product, facilities and service in this international gateway city," said Herve Humler, president and chief operations officer of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C.

Arrival
Don't prep for a long elevator ride just yet. The hotel's arrival lobby is actually located on the ninth floor of the building, where guests will pause before being transported to floor 103, which offers panoramic views of Hong Kong and the harbor.

The place to be to ring in 2011? For many of Hollywood's elite, it was The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, the city's newest and most glamorous resort, which kicked off a grand opening celebration with concert performances from JAY-Z and Coldplay, plus guest surprises by Kanye West, Beyonce and John Mayer.

Coldplay kicked off the evening with a 12 song set, which included Yellow, In My Place and Clocks. To ring in the New Year, JAY-Z joined Coldplay on stage for a rendition of Lost, followed by a countdown to midnight. JAY-Z took the stage for the first hours of 2011 and was joined by Kanye West for an impromptu freestyle performance of Run This Town, Can't Tell Me Nothing and Runaway. Spa-goers are busy and budget conscious. Booking mini-treatments, whether in "sample packs" of several different experiences or single-service models, allow visitors to experience a variety of services without blowing their budget. Despite being almost on top of the beach, rooms are quiet and private, perhaps due to the hotel's small size.

Should the need for privacy really strike, ask for one of the four garden suites, facing inward towards the hotel's central courtyard. Each of these rooms comes complete with a private plunge pool, perfect for a late night dip.

Awaken each morning to a Champagne breakfast served buffet-style in the hotel's living room, including both hot and cold dishes that range from the expected (bacon and eggs) to the Bajan (fried flying fish or plantains with veggies and onions). Each booking comes with a short Jet Lag massage for each guest, which can be ordered at your convenience in a variety of locations throughout the hotel or its sister property, Tamarind, which recently re-opened after a $10 million renovation. If you're traveling with children, this property allows guests under 18.

Yesterday, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History unveiled its latest addition to the National Gem Collection, the Cullinan Diamond Necklace - a piece dating back to 1910 and boasting a history nearly as rich as its famous neighbor, the Hope Diamond.

A 30-carat piece is crafted in the Edwardian style, and boasts a unique structure which allows it to be worn as both brooch and necklace. The centerpiece stone is a large 2.6 carat "fancy blue" diamond with a chain of smaller blue and white diamond pieces.

Jeff Post, curator of the collection, calls the piece "very important ... people get a little bit jaded here [with the Hope Diamond so close by] but there's no where else in the world you can go [to see two such diamonds together."

Giorgio Gucci made his first visit to Washington yesterday as part of a forum discussion entitled "Intellectual Property Rights in the Fashion Industry and Its Effects on Our Nation's Economy." Gucci, descendant of the famous Gucci dynasty, is the third generation of Gucci heirs that began with his grandfather, Guccio, who established the Gucci House of design in 1905. Panelists included Caroyl Miller, deputy textile negotiator from the U.S. Trade Representative Office, Jean Bonilla, director of the Office of Intellectual Property Enforcement and Steve Hicks, director of trade policy and agreement at the office of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Every therapist at the spa is required to undergo a special training program, conducted over a four-month period, each focused on a different type of tea.

"Tea is the number two consumed beverage in the world," said Chrystal King, QUA Spa Director. "We think of this program as ... another form of education for our guests."

Trainings focus on the practical - steeping times, proper water temperatures, and properties - as well as the historical background to each tea and the proper tea for certain conditions. At least twice yearly, therapists undergo updates to the treatments as new teas are added to the program.

Co-branded with Art of Tea, the spa offers 22 unique blends in categories like black, white, green and oolong to pair with the 72 different treatments on their spa menu. Some treatments, like the spa's "Hourglass" signature service, aren't branded with a specific tea, but therapists consult clients to design both a treatment program and a tea that will pair well with client's specific requests.

For example, a client looking for a boost post-facial might opt for a collagen-enhancing white tea, says Angela Tedesco, the spa's tea program director. Of course, they can also pair the teas with a specific concern unrelated to the treatment, Tedesco adds.

On a recent visit, my facial/massage combination was topped off by a detoxifying tea featuring ginger and lemon - the perfect Rx after a long night at the hotel's famed nightclub, PURE.

Clients looking to take the relaxation home can also purchase the teas from the spa's boutique.

Sure, we all do. But what if your luck at the Blackjack and Poker tables is ... non-existent? Harrah's Entertainment, owners of 39 casino and hotel properties throughout the world, has now made earning top tier (Diamond or Seven Star) membership in their Total Rewards loyalty program even easier. Crowds lined the casino floor, turned into an impromptu red carpet, while lucky ticket holders and high-roller members of the Total Rewards Diamond and Seven Stars clubs enjoyed access to the celebrity screening, held in the resort's Peepshow theater.

Red carpet notables included cast members Sylvester Stallone (with wife and daughters in tow), Jason Statham, Randy Couture, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Charisma Carpenter, Dolph Lundgren, Giselle Itie, and Governor Schwarzenegger himself, who bypassed the carpet, much to the dismay of the crowd. Additional appearances included Young MC (who, appropriately, emceed the screening), Peepshow's Holly Madison, Tommy "Tiny" Lister and Eclipse and New Moon's Daniel Cudmore.

The film, which opens nationwide today, features a hardened team of mercenaries on a mission to overthrow a corrupt dictator on a South American island. While the plot (shoot, fight, kill, blow things up, repeat) is thin to non-existent, the star-studded cast and exceptional special effects will surely draw a big crowd at the box office.

Inside the invite-only after party, select movie-goers and celebs mingled to the sounds of not one, but two, DJs (too much is never enough for this film of "more, more, more") while noshing on coconut shrimp, mini empanadas and lobster quesadillas while sipping drinks like the Expendables Motherf***er, an electric blue play on a Long Island Iced Tea.

A love of gambling is one thing - being a high roller is another. For the real "big timers," those who gamble more than $1 million per trip, resorts roll out all the stops - private penthouse suites, insider-only casinos and dining, and service so dedicated, that so long as it's legal, the task will be accomplished.

Foxwoods bears the distinction of being North America's largest casino property. High rollers are comped stays in the hotel's 23 special penthouse suites, which range from 1,000 to 5,000 square feet and offer views of the Mashantucket reservation from 20+ stories up. In college, I worked part-time in Atlantic City, and that's what first exposed me to the industry. I was a Chemistry major in college, and originally wanted to be a Pediatrician. I'd like to think I am still in that business. I take care of people and their needs.

How does one train for a job like this?

I started out as a "regular" hotel butler. I was lucky enough to train under two talented individuals who had worked for Steve Wynn at Golden Nugget. I worked my way up the ranks to eventually take over the head butler role.

"This year's survey results reflect a shift in consumers' motivation to travel," says Elaine Srnka, editorial director for VIRTUOSO LIFE, the travel network's in-house magazine. "Travelers want to see the world. They are no longer content with staying in one place. Whether it's visiting the far corners of the earth on a world cruise, hiking through remote Machu Picchu or tasting local cuisine through cooking schools, travelers want unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experiences."

Travelers opted for a world cruise as their top "trip of a lifetime" experience. Visiting all seven continents and the new wonders of the world were also top-rated wish list items. The Galapagos Islands were ranked the number-one island escape, the second best outdoor adventure destination and the third best destination for family travel.

The top 10 dream destinations also reflected readers' longing to visit far-off lands, with Australia, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa and Greece nabbing the first five spots. Paris held onto its reign as the most romantic city to spend time with a loved one, as well as the best gourmet city. Rome remains the city with the most beautiful architecture, and Tuscany continues to be the wine region travelers want to toast the most. Again this year, readers felt going on a safari to Africa would merit the best outdoor adventure.

Nearly 11,000 readers of Virtuoso's magazine, VIRTUOSO LIFE, participated in the survey.

The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai Pudong, the brand's seventh in the country and second in Shanghai, opened its doors to the public on Monday. The 285-room property occupies the top 18 floors of the luxury Shanghai ifc Tower and opened in conjunction with the 2010 World Expo.

Designed by acclaimed architect Cesar Pelli, the hotel's glittering diamond-like exterior and contemporary decor evokes Shanghai's Art Deco movement of the 1930's. The hotel offers panoramic views of The Bund, the most intact collection of Art Deco architecture anywhere in the world.

There are three floors of Club-level accommodations, each with access to the 24-hour and 49th floor Club Lounge.

Restaurants include Aura Lounge and Jazz Bar, Jin Xuan, the fine dining Chinese Restaurant designed by Steve Leung; Scena Italian Restaurant and Flair Rooftop Restaurant and Bar. Flair boasts the distinction of being is Shanghai's highest al fresco dining and bar venue, although, as we all know, it might not hold that honor for long.
