Then take a gander at House of Dog, which offers only 100% cruelty-free pet products made from fine faux materials. Products from all the main dog categories are available: collars, leashes, apparel, beds, carriers, toys, bowls, and even wedding sets, which I presume are special items so your dog can participate in a wedding (while collar, white leash, white carrier). House of Dog's signature creations feature a Luxist favorite -- handset Czech crystals. Click on each category to see the offerings, and take a look at the gallery for a selection of some of the products and the price ranges. The Signature Paw Bag shown, for example, is $320, and comes in seven colors.
Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena (Italy) is made from white and sugary Trebbiano grapes grown on the hills around Modena. Custom demands that the grapes are harvested as late as possible to take advantage of the warmth that nature provides there. This vinegar is made from the cooked "grape must" [the juice pressed from grapes before it has fermented; new wine] matured by a long and slow vinegarization process through natural fermentation, followed by progressive concentration by aging in a series of casks made from different types of wood and without the addition of spices or flavorings. The production of traditional Balsamic Vinegar is labor intensive and time consuming; this accounts for its high cost and limited availability.

Production of traditional Balsamic Vinegar is governed by Italian law and provides that a specific Certification Agency (Cermet) oversees all production phases, from the vineyard to the bottle. All of the product that is bottled must pass a sensory examination run by a panel of five tasting judges.

Commercial grade Balsamic Vinegar of Modena constitutes a more economical alternative to the traditional product. In the United States, products are also allowed to be labeled as Balsamic Vinegar, based on the U.S. labeling laws. These products are made from the juice of grapes, but would not carry the term "of Modena" on the label. Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena generally is found in specialty stores. Commercial grade Balsamic Vinegar of Modena can be found in specialty stores, supermarkets, and supercenters.Commercial products are of high quality and suitable for use in marinades, vinaigrette dressings, and in making pan sauces.

The product has a long shelf life and can be stored in a closed container indefinitely. Store the product at 4-30°C (39-86°F), but refrigeration is not required. Exposure to air will not harm the product, but may cause "mothering," which causes the solids to filter out. Some sedimentation is normal for a product that contains a high level of soluble solids, but the sedimentation will disappear when the bottle is shaken.

Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena is only bottled in the distinct, bulb-shaped bottle of 100 ml. It has either a white cap (minimum age of 12 years) or gold cap (minimum age of 20 years).

Salad dressings, sauces, and gravies benefit from the addition of Balsamic Vinegar. Sprinkle on cooked meat to add flavor and aroma; season salad greens, strawberries, peaches and melons; or use as an ingredient in your favorite salad dressing.

Source: The Vinegar Institute
Balsamic Vinegar Facts originally appeared on Luxist on Sun, 08 Nov 2009 10:01:00 EST.
Why Good Makeup Brushes Matter

Makeup brushes tend to be overlooked, perhaps because many makeup products include a puff or brush or some sort of applicator. As poor quality as some of these applicators are, many women balk at the idea of buying separate tools -- the brushes that come with the products are smaller and more portable, and good brushes can indeed be pricey. But here's a good line I read recently: Your skin is like a delicate piece of silk. Your makeup brushes shouldn't feel like they are brooms sweeping across your skin. Quality brushes also will make applying makeup easier, faster, and more pleasurable, because they are made in specific shapes and sizes for the job at hand (e.g., blush brush, powder brush, eyeshadow brush).

Before purchasing a brush or brush kit, check that each brush head is soft and full. Run your hand through the bristles. It is a bad sign if they come out readily/shed or feel coarse on your skin. The handle should feel comfortable and seem solid. Keep your brushes in a protective case or upright in a decorative glass or container on your dresser, not in the bathroom, where moisture accumulates. Every few weeks, or at least once a month, gently wash them in a mild liquid detergent or baby shampoo. Do not soak them. Pat each brush dry, especially around the area where the brushes meet the handle, and lay them flat over the edge of a table or counter so that the bristles are open to air on all sides, and reshape the brush head.

I'm not endorsing this brand, but BareEscentuals offers a good selection of brushes. Take a look simply to see what shapes and sizes of quality brushes are available, and their cost.
Why Good Makeup Brushes Matter originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 06 Nov 2009 15:02:00 EST. Do you know your Granny Smith from your Gala, your Rome Beauty from your Braeburn? This guide from the U.S. Apple Association will help you choose the right apple for your eating or cooking pleasure.

Braeburn: This apple originated in New Zealand in the early 1950s, as a chance seedling with Lady Hamilton and Granny Smith as possible parents. Now grown in the United States, Braeburn is a multipurpose apple good for all types of apple uses. Its color varies from orange to red over a yellow background. This crisp, juicy apple has a rich, spicy-sweet flavor. U.S. Braeburns are available beginning in October through July.

Cameo: This new apple with an old-world name was discovered as a chance seedling in the late 1980s in Washington state. Cameo makes its appearance beginning in October. It bears red stripes over a cream-colored background. Extra-crispy Cameo has a sweet-tart taste. This apple resists browning, making it a natural choice for salads and fruit trays. Cooks, please note that Cameo's extra-denseness takes a bit longer to cook.

Cortland: This variety originated in the late 1890s in New York state, a cross between McIntosh and Ben Davis developed at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station. Sweeter than its McIntosh parent, with only a hint of tartness. Cortland has tender, snow white flesh that resists browning, making it an excellent choice for salads, kabobs and garnishes. The Cortland is available September through April.

Empire: Empires premiered in 1966 in the Empire State of New York, a cross between Red Delicious and McIntosh developed by the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station. This crisp, juicy apple has a delightful sweet-tart flavor and creamy white flesh, making it a good all-purpose apple. Stake out your Empire between September and July.

Fuji: Originally developed in Japan in the late 1930s and named after the famous Mt. Fuji, U.S.-grown Fujis began appearing in markets in the 1980s. Fuji is a cross between Ralls Janet and Red Delicious. This variety's popularity is skyrocketing, thanks to its sweet flavor and firmness. Fuji apples are bi-colored, typically striped with yellow and red. They are available year-round, beginning in September.

Gala: This variety originated in New Zealand, a cross between Kidd's Orange Red and Golden Delicious. The Royal Gala strain was named in honor of Queen Elizabeth II, who deemed it her favorite during a visit to New Zealand. It was brought to the United States in the early 1970s, and is now one of the country's most popular apples. This crispy, juicy, very sweet apple is ideal for snacking. Galas can vary in color, from cream to red- and yellow-striped. U.S.-grown Galas are harvested beginning in mid-July, and are typically available year-round.

Ginger Gold: A Virginia grower discovered this apple sprouting amid the ruins of a hurricane-devastated orchard in the late 1960s, and named this greenish-gold, sweet-tart apple after his sweetheart. Its parentage includes Albemarle Pippin, a favorite apple of Thomas Jefferson. This early-season Eastern apple is great for salads, and cooks well too. Available in limited but growing supplies starting in mid-October.

Golden Delicious: This old favorite was discovered as a chance seedling in 1890 in Clay County, W.Va., and was originally named Mullin's Yellow Seedling. Renamed in 1916, its parents are thought to be Golden Reinette and Grimes Golden. Goldens have a pale yellow skin, sometimes with a red blush. Mellow and sweet, all-purpose Goldens are great for eating out of hand, baking and salads. Golden's crisp, pale yellow flesh resists browning, making it a good choice for salads and other dishes. Goldens appear on the market in September, and are available year-round. Cooks, note that you can reduce the amount of added sugar when making pies with Goldens.

Granny Smith: This Australian native was discovered in 1868 as a chance seedling by "Granny" Anne Smith of Ryde, New South Wales. One parent might have been a French Crab Apple. Grannys are known for their distinctive green flesh, which sometimes bears a red blush, and their very tart flavor. An all-purpose apple, Grannys work equally well as a snack or in pies and sauce. U.S. Grannys are harvested beginning in August, and are available year-round.

Honeycrisp: This apple has a honeyed, mild flavor and a crispness deemed explosive. Crispy, juicy, and sweet, this popular newcomer is a cross between a Macoun and a Honeygold. Honeycrisp's skin is a distinctive mottled red over a yellow background, with coarse flesh. This apple is good for snacking, salads, and sauce-making, and stores well. Honeycrisp was developed by the University of Minnesota. Harvested beginning in September, supplies are limited but growing.

Idared: Introduced in 1942, this Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station product is a cross between the Jonathan and Wagener apples. It has a tangy flavor like the Jonathan, but is much larger. It has a bright red skin, and firm texture. This apple is good for snacking and holds its shape ideally for baking. Available from September through June.

Jonagold: A blend of Jonathan and Golden Delicious apples, New York native Jonagold offers a unique honey-tart flavor, and crispy, juicy nearly yellow flesh. It debuted in 1968, a product of the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station. With a yellow-green base skin color and a red-orange blush, it is excellent both for eating fresh and for cooking. Jonagold is typically available October through July.

Jonathan: This variety of apples was discovered in Woodstock, N.Y., in the 1920s and is known for its use in pies and applesauce. This crimson apple with occasional touches of green has a spicy tang that blends well with other varieties in sauces and cider. Jonathan is typically available from September through April.

McIntosh: This old, well-known variety was discovered as a chance seedling by John McIntosh in 1811. Its deep red finish sometimes carries a green blush. Juicy, tangy, tart McIntosh has a tender, white flesh. It is best used for snacking and applesauce, but some people enjoy its tart flavor in pies as well. Cook's hints: McIntosh's flesh cooks down easily; if pie making, cut your slices thick or add a thickener. This apple is typically available from September through May.

Newtown Pippin: Also known as Albemarle Pippin, a favorite variety of Thomas Jefferson. Discovered on Long Island in 1759, this apple is one of the oldest original U.S. varieties, helping to launch the U.S. fruit export industry. Newtown Pippin is a distinctive green, often with yellow highlights. Its aromatic, tangy flesh makes the Newtown great for use in pies and applesauce. Primarilly a processing variety, most U.S. supplies are used commercially. Newtown Pippin is typically available from September through December.

Pink Lady: Notable for its hot pink skin color and lily-white flesh, this Southern Hemisphere native is now being grown stateside. A cross between Golden Delicious and Lady Williams, crunchy Pink Lady has a unique sweet-tart flavor described as "Gala with a zing." Pink Lady is great for snacking, slicing, or dicing on a salad, and for baking. This apple appears in mid-October, one of the last varieties to be harvested, so supplies often are available through late spring or early summer.

Red Delicious: This most widely recognized of all U.S. apple varieties originated in Iowa in the 1870s. This sweet, crispy, juicy apple varies in color from striped red to solid midnight red. Western Red Delicious are elongated in shape, with pronounced "feet"; Eastern-grown Delicious are more round. This apple is best eaten fresh or in salads. Red Delicious apples are available year-round, starting in September.

Rome Beauty: Referred to as the "baker's buddy," this apple was discovered as a chance seedling in the early 1800s on a farm near Rome Township, Ohio. Famed for its storage qualities, this mildly tart apple is primarily used for cooking and is especially good baked or sautéed. The Rome apple is typically available beginning in September.
An Apple Glossary originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 06 Nov 2009 09:01:00 EST.

Millions of women (and a few men) visit nail salons regularly to have their nails done. Unfortunately, occasionally the result of having manicures or pedicures is developing nail fungus or bacterial infections that can not only look bad, but also may also feel even worse. A few simple steps before your next salon service can significantly lower your risk of developing a painful nail infection or fungus, or worse, a more serious disease.

Check out the salon for cleanliness and safety precautions. Don't be afraid to ask for a quick tour if you are considering a new salon, or asking the owner or manager of your current salon what steps they take to ensure safety. And take a look around. Does the salon look clean and sanitary? Is the trash container properly bagged and covered? Is the floor clean? Are the manicure tables kept neat and tidy? Is there good light? Look at the disinfectant containers and make sure that they are clear, clean, and free of debris.

Next, check the station where your service will take place. Ask if all instruments are cleaned and disinfected (even better: autoclaved) after each use, and if you need proof, have the technician show you the cleaning area or solution. Does he or she use fresh, clean instruments on each client? Make sure all files, buffers, and anything else that touches you is freshly clean before you allow the technician to begin. Also, the technician should wash his or her hands before and after each client, or wear fresh gloves. Clean towels should be used for every client.

Avoid having your cuticles cut. Cuticles serve a purpose -- they protect the nail bed from allowing infection to enter. If you like how your nails look with them pushed back, ask for cuticle softener, rather than cuticle scissors. After the cuticles are softened, the technician can wipe away, or gently scrape away, the excess with a fresh orangewood stick.

Pedicures can be a bit riskier because of the hot water and tub. Make sure the tub is thoroughly drained, cleaned, and disinfected between clients. The steps where clients typically step with bare feet also should be cleaned and disinfected between clients.

One way to avoid many of these concerns is to buy your own manicure or pedicure kit and bring it with you. Make sure you clean and disinfect your kit after each use, even if you are the only one using it. You also can bring your own nail polish, base coat, and top coat. Remove your old nail polish at home, or bring nail polish remover with you.

The salon and technician should both be licensed by their state governing board, usually the board of cosmetology. The licenses should be clearly displayed.

If sanitary precautions are not being taken at your salon, politely but firmly tell the owner what needs to change and what you expect. Contact your state cosmetology board if you develop a nail infection, fungus, or other condition as a result of visiting a salon, or if you see unsanitary practices.
Filed under: Services, Cosmetics and Fragrance

Ensuring a Safe Manicure and Pedicure originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 05 Nov 2009 14:01:00 EST.
Unlike older TVs, with their glass fronts, flat screen models require more gentle care. In addition to regular dusting, you should periodically clean the screen to remove dirt and fingerprints, which will lessen your viewing experience.

Turn off the TV and disconnect the power. Make sure the screen is cool. This is more important with plasma TVs, as they throw a bit more heat than LCD TVs.

Dampen a lint-free cloth with clean water (do not use strong chemical cleaners such as alcohol, ammonia-based cleaners, or window cleaners) and wring it out until it is moist and will not drip. Chamois, microfiber, or 100 percent cotton are best. Do not use a napkin, paper towel, or tissue paper, as wood-source materials may scratch the screen. Gently wipe from the center of the screen in circles outward reaching the frame; be sure to clean the corners. Do not rub, scrub, or apply too much pressure. Wipe the case if desired. Use a dry, lint-free cloth to wipe away any moisture on the screen or the case, again using a circular motion on the screen.

You also can purchase special screenwipes, available at most computer stores. These can be used on your computer monitor too.
Cleaning a Flat-Screen TV originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 22:02:00 EST. These losses are up from the $13 billion the government estimated in June, when Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison.

Picard, a partner at the law firm Baker & Hostetler LLP, said he has reviewed 2,861 direct customer claims, allowing 1,558 and rejecting 1,303. He said 15,974 customer claims were submitted and noted that he has recovered $1.4 billion of Madoff assets, an amount that should reach $1.5 billion by year end.

Picard has filed lawsuits to recover $15 billion from Madoff investors he calls "net winners." Of the 4,903 accounts at Madoff's firm on December 11, 2008, when Madoff was arrested, 2,568 received more money than they deposited, he said.

Picard also said he will pursue the recovery of $7.2 billion from the estate of billionaire philanthropist Jeffry Picower, who recently drowned in a swimming pool at his Palm Beach, Fla., home following a heart attack.

The Securities Investor Protection Corp, a federally chartered agency that supervises the liquidation of brokerages, has been "the only source of distributed funds" to victims so far, agency president Stephen Harbeck said, adding that the $534.25 million of committed advances is more than in the SIPC's 321 combined prior liquidations since 1970. Federal law limits SIPC protection to $500,000.
Filed under: Wealth, Crimes and Misdemeanors

Madoff's Victims To Get $534+ Million in Payments originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 18:01:00 EST.
Hardwood floors take a beating. Here are some simple ways to keep your floor attractive and in good condition.

Start by removing your shoes when you arrive home. Keep soft-soled slippers by the door, and changing shoes upon arrival will become a habit that not only protects your floor from scratches, scuffs, and pounding, but also keeps your house cleaner.

Floors will still get dirty, just from life. Daily or every other day, sweep using a soft-bristled broom or Swiffer, particularly if you have pets. Weekly, vacuum the floors and all corners with a soft floor attachment.

Periodically you will need to wash the floors -- but do so only if they are sealed. Pick a cleaner made especially for wood floors; aim for a "green" or eco-friendly cleaner for gentle yet effective cleaning that won't leave a chemical smell. Mop gently and quickly; do not allow water to stand or puddle on the floor. Hand-dry with a soft cloth if you don't mind a little on-your-hands-and-knees work.

Do not use wax on a surface finished wood floor.

Winter means dry indoor air, a result of lower humidity outside and blowy heating systems inside. Adding cool or warm moisture to the air by using a humidifier has many benefits: easier breathing, a diminished chance of suffering winter ills such as colds and respiratory infections, furniture and other indoor items will not dry out as much, the air will feel warmer, plants will stay fresher longer, and your skin and throat will not be as dry. The best benefit, as far as I'm concerned, is that moist air helps avoid the unpleasant "zap" you often get from static electricity.

If your home is more than a few rooms, invest in two or three humidifiers and keep them filled. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for filter maintenance and changing as well as for how often and how to clean the water reservoir so as to avoid mold and bacteria buildup.

Why Use a Humidifier in the Winter originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 28 Oct 2009 22:02:00 EST.
Cleaning and Caring for Granite Countertops

Granite countertops add beauty, functionality, and value to a home. But because granite is a natural product, it requires special care to protect it and keep it looking its best.

To be sure granite countertops stay in nice condition after a hard day's work, take a few minutes every evening to clear them of clutter and gently wipe them down. Usually a soft cloth or sponge with hot water will be enough, but for a little extra cleaning power, a specially formulated stone cleaner can be used. Look for eco-friendly or "green" cleaners, as these will be gentle yet still effective.

To clean a splatter, first remove the dried-on food with a razor blade. Then wet the surface with your usual granite cleaner, or this DIY, inexpensive, safe one: equal parts water and alcohol in a spray bottle. Gently scrape along the surface to remove any remaining dirt. Use a soft sponge to wipe, then buff dry to a shine with a soft cloth.

Do not clean granite with acidic ingredients such vinegar, lemon juice, or lime juice, as they can be abrasive, and avoid obviously abrasive products such as scrubs and steel wool pads. Also avoid cleaning products that contain bleach, degreasing substances, or ammonia. Dish soap should be used sparingly, because it eventually will dull the countertop appearance.

Avoid dropping hard items on granite countertops, as the countertop may nick or chip. And while you can place a hot pot or pan on granite, try to avoid doing so, as it may leave a mark.

Granite countertops should be sealed biannually for more protection. The Marble Institute of America is a good source for all things stone.
Cleaning and Caring for Granite Countertops originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 27 Oct 2009 16:02:00 EST. Seems like it. With so many discount shopping sites that sell high-end items, mere mortals can get said high-end items at low(er)-end prices. But is is there room for yet one more of these sites? LuxGoddess.com is hoping so. It recently joined the likes of Bluefly, ShopBop, and Gilt to offer upscale items at reduced prices. Here's what makes LuxGoddess different, however: It donates 10% of its proceeds to Bright Pink, a national nonprofit that provides education and support to young women who are at high risk for breast and ovarian cancer.

Calling itself "the premier site for today's fashion trendsetters looking for great deals on their favorite designer brands," the site carries well-known brands, with a number of items pulled from online stores, and covers the standard categories of apparel, shoes, beauty, and accessories. There's also a sale rack, which is a user's personal sale rack, based on her size and brand preferences.
Filed under: Apparel, Services, Cosmetics and Fragrance, Shoes, Charity

LuxGoddess.com Hops on the Discount Shopping Site Bandwagon, Donates to Charity originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 27 Oct 2009 06:01:00 EST. It is a delicacy in French cuisine. Foie gras' flavor is described as rich, buttery, and delicate, unlike that of a regular duck or goose liver. Foie gras is sold whole, or is prepared into mousse, parfait, or pâté, and often is served as an accompaniment to another food item, such as steak.

France is the largest producer and consumer of foie gras, though it is produced and consumed worldwide, particularly in other European nations, the United States, and China. Gavage-based foie gras production is controversial and considered by some to be cruel. A number of countries and other jurisdictions have laws against force feeding or the sale of foie gras.

What Is Foie Gras? originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 26 Oct 2009 19:02:00 EST. But I enjoy the back-page Proust Questionnaire, and VF is guessing the rest of the world does too. It just released a compilation of the monthly magazine's department -- which has been in VF since 1993 -- in a hardcover book, Vanity Fair's Proust Questionnaire: 101 Luminaries Ponder Love, Death, Happiness, and the Meaning of Life (Rodale Books, October 2009).

Edited by VF editor Graydon Carter with illustrations by Risko, who illustrates the department each issue, the 224-page book sells for $23.99.

Read Carter's take on his new book, and learn that neither Proust nor VF invented the questionnaire, in VF's November 2009 issue's Society section.

About a year-and-a-half ago I highlighted a great PBS show, Moment of Luxury With Bill Stubbs. The show is back for Season 2, and episodes began airing on October 1. (I regret not getting this information out there sooner...catch up with Season 1 online; if we're lucky, Season 2 episodes will appear soon!)

Stubbs, recognized by Architectural Digest on its list of top 100 designers, makes the experience of "luxury" -- excellence, comfort, and high quality -- accessible to Americans on any budget by offering tips on how to bring good, yet affordable, living into their homes and lives through home design, food, culture, and art.

"Our message that luxury does not have to be a fabulous home or an expensive piece of jewelry ... it can be a lush garden, an embroidered pillow, or a simple cup of tea ... has resonated with viewers," says Stubbs. "We are delighted to be back for a second season to continue our search for those places, people, and things that inspire me the most and to offer our viewers the tools to apply these secrets for affordable luxurious living."

This season, Stubbs finds luxury close to home in the United States and Canada.

I haven't heard much lately about Charlize Theron, but she made it back into this news this past week with her part in the OneXOne charity event on October 22 in San Francisco, where she took the stage to auction off a prize that included a two-week trip to her native South Africa to watch soccer's World Cup in summer 2010, a safari, and a meet-and-greet with Nelson Mandela. The winning bidder, a woman, received an extra item for her $140,000 donation -- a kiss with Theron, who had tossed in the offer of a kiss to increase bidding when the offers plateaued at $37,000.

Theron was at the event to help raise money for the Charlize Theron African Outreach Project, which is teaming with the OneXOne Foundation to bring soccer fields and clean water to the children of South Africa by 2010, in time for the World Cup. Theron is in a long-term relationship with actor Stuart Townsend. "My boyfriend is not here tonight," she joked during the auction.

Charlize Theron's Kiss Worth $140,000 originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 24 Oct 2009 20:02:00 EST. I've bought twice and sold once in NYC, and am pretty sure some of my gray hair arrived during those months. Recently I heard about BidOnTheCity.com, "eBay for Manhattan real estate." Intriguing! You can buy or sell, but unlike most other auction sites, you can only bid at a certain time, in person or online, Sundays at noon. Even brokers can get involved. Here's how it works. Read some press coverage here.

BidOnTheCity.com: Buy Manhattan Real Estate at Auction originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 15:03:00 EST. But now even babies in utero are in on the commercialized luxe life. A new show on WeTV, Platinum Babies, debuting on Friday, November 6, will highlight wealthy parents-to-be who are sparing no expense when it comes to getting ready for their little one's arrival. In the first two episodes you'll meet Victoria and Tom, and Tara and Andrew, and watch along as they shop, shop, shop, par-tay (celebs on hand, natch), get massages, et cetera. I don't think I'll be DVRing this show, as I feel a little bit icky thinking about what I assume will be baby exploitation and massive, blatant product placement.

Platinum Babies on WeTV originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 21 Oct 2009 21:01:00 EST. To wit, small changes start at home, and can involve pet products too. Here are a few "green" brands that make pet products:

Eco-Me: products to keep your dog clean as well as with which to clean up, plus treats; more here

Natural Woof: exercise products, cleaners, toys & treats, beds & bowls, collars & outerwear, travel items, and homeopathic remedies; small-home dwellers, try this

Dress My Pooch: the name says it all -- clothing for dogs plus all kinds of other essentials

Zia & Tia: organics for every member of the family (humans too); pet lovers, go here for toys, beds, and apparel

Urban Leash & Treat: smaller, lower-priced items, but still all the essentials as well as some fun things (cat stuff too)

Metro Dog: all you'd expect for city dogs. Tip: keep them off your one sofa by giving them their own bed. You also can meet some real city dogs, who are allowed on the furniture, in my friend Shira's blog, Saving for Sesame. Follow The Real House Whippets of NYC on all their adventures!

If you need even more info on luxury pet products, some green (let's hope lots green), save the date for the Luxury Pet Pavilion, March 12-13, 2010, Los Angeles.

Eco Pet Products Roundup originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 15 Oct 2009 15:03:00 EST. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to take along your laptop for that moment when you need to do a quick e-mail check, or map out a route to the next fete, and you don't have a BlackBerry? Wait ... what kind of person is so uncool, such a Luddite, that she doesn't have a BlackBerry? Me. But I'm getting one soon, promise. In the meantime, if I had Sony's tiny, 1.4-lb. P Series Lifestyle PC, I could just slip it in my bag and go. Dimensions are just 4.8 in. x 9.7 in. x 0.8 in., and it comes in red (shown), green, gold, white, and black. The tech specifications are too much to get into here, but Amazon has all the info you need.
More bad news for the magazine industry hit last week: Condé Nast is closing down several of its big-name magazines, names you know - Gourmet, Modern Bride and Elegant Bride - and one you may not, Cookie, which is about parenthood.

The New York Times noted, "[Gourmet] has suffered a severe decline in ad pages, but the cut still comes as a shock. There was speculation that Condé Nast would close one of its food titles - Gourmet or Bon Appétit - but most bets were on the latter. Gourmet has a richer history than Bon Appétit, and its editor, Ruth Reichl, is powerful in the food world. Cookie is a relatively new introduction, started in 2005, while the bridal magazines were seen as offshoots of the bigger Brides magazine, which Condé Nast also owns."

The cuts were done at the conclusion of a three-month study by McKinsey & Company, which conducted an analysis of Condé Nast's costs and recommended that several magazines cut about 25 percent from their budgets. These are the first closings announced by the company since the study.

These are not the first magazines shuttered by Condé Nast, even though, as the Times notes, the company never has been quick to close titles, and in the last year or so has closed only newer titles, Condé Nast Portfolio and Domino, along with folding Men's Vogue into Vogue.

This isn't the first time Luxist has noted magazine closings either. See this piece I did last month, which mentions in the gallery some other closings noted by my colleagues.

Condé Nast Closing Down Gourmet, Cookie, Modern Bride and Elegant Bride originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 12 Oct 2009 21:01:00 EST. It's woven in the signature BV hand-crafted leather and then hand-dyed yellow and black. Big enough to be a commuter bag and carry your purse essentials plus extras, like office shoes, a newspaper, gym clothes, and so on. The bag is only available through the company's Fifth Avenue NYC store (699 Fifth Ave., 212-371-5511). Scheduled to arrive in November, so you can, and should, preorder now.

Bottega Veneta NYCabat Bag, Limited Edition, Handbag of the Day originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 07 Oct 2009 17:03:00 EST. What makes this service different from something like Cash4Gold is that you set up a personal appointment at your home or the company's office, and the company caters to the high-end clientele. Seems the days of utilitarian Sherpa Bags are over, at least for on-the-go, sophisticated dogs and their owners (unless you're flying, then they're the best). Anyway ... Here's a high-end, attractive dog-carrying bag, if you're into Swarovski crystals. And if you've ever read Luxist, you know we love our Swarovski crystals. The "Bella" dog carrying bag by Coats N Totes is made of the finest Italian leather, is trimmed in large Swarovski crystals in the front and back, and has two large pockets on either side. It includes a soft padded floor and collar snap. Available in black, pink, or tan, made in the USA. $800

Gallery: Coats N Totes "Bella" Dog Carrying Bag

Coats N Totes "Bella" Dog Carrying Bag originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 29 Sep 2009 16:01:00 EST.

Like my colleagues Annie and Alison, I braved Fashion Week, in particular, Fashion's Night Out on September 10. But I was fortunate to be in one serene place, The Shops at The Plaza. Entering at One East 58th Street, right near Central Park, The Shops at The Plaza immediately gives you a feeling of luxury shopping, but in a much more open environment than a small boutique because The Shops is 160,000 square feet on six levels.

The Shops features a unique gathering of one-of-a-kind jewelry designers and coveted boutique brands, many of which have chosen to open their first U.S. outpost exclusively here. Examples of the stores you'll find are Krigler, a fifth-generation fragrance house with Russian roots and French savoir-faire; Anna Hu, a Christie's New York and Van Cleef & Arpels veteran who specializes in creating stunning, one-of-a-kind pieces; Qiviuk, which offers unusual, high-quality clothing for men and women made of the cashmere-like Qiviuk fiber; and a new store to The Shops, the flagship location of New York fashion designer Douglas Hannant. I had the chance to chat with representatives from each of these stores, so watch Luxist for more on these brands.

Other stores at The Shops are MCM, Ghurka, Vertu, Morgenthal Frederics, Seize Sur Vingt, LTJ Arthur, GOODFORTUNE TENTHOUSANDTHINGS, Kenneth Jay Lane, Iradj Moini, Maurice Fine Jewelry, Helen Yarmak, Peter Lik Fine Photography, and Francesco Fino. Plus, now reopened is The Plaza Boutique, the hotel's own store, which offers high-end leather goods, porcelain glasses, fashionable men's shirts, and luxurious gift items.

As for beauty, The Shops has that area covered as well. The Plaza Beauty by Warren-Tricomi is a beauty destination and contemporary boutique divided by category, offering a brow bar, men's bar, fragrance bar, and skincare. (See photo.) Drawing from the worlds of hair care, skincare, and fragrance, The Plaza Beauty provides a sampling of the most luxurious, internationally-renowned brands, as well as rare, emerging lines, all hand-picked by Joel Warren and Edward Tricomi.

All that shopping and beautification may make you in need of a respite, or at least a snack. Stop by the Demel café, Parisian bookseller Assouline, the Caudalie Vinotherapie Spa, Warren-Tricomi Salon, or the Fitness Center by Radu Physical Culture to refuel and recharge.

The Plaza has undergone a $400 million, three-year, lobby-to-roof renovation and restoration, and it's amazing. Designated a New York City Landmark in 1969, it is also the only New York City hotel to be designated as a National Historic Landmark.
Filed under: Apparel, Handbags, Jewelry, Services, Spas, Cosmetics and Fragrance, Men's Style, Wealth

The Shops at The Plaza originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 25 Sep 2009 08:01:00 EST. "Portrait of a Man, Half-Length, With His Arms Akimbo," from 1658, depicts an unknown sitter, and experts at Christie's say it could garner $29.7 million to $41.2 million, the highest estimate ever for an old master painting coming to auction.

Although Christie's will say only that the painting is from a "distinguished private collection," the seller is known to be Barbara Piasecka Johnson, a Polish-born collector who once lived in Princeton, N.J., and now resides in Assisi, Italy. Johnson inherited about $300 million from her husband, J. Seward Johnson, son of the founder of the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical company, after he died in 1983.

The portrait was first shown publicly in 1847, when it was included in an exhibition at the British Institution in London, on loan from George Folliott, a notable British collector. His grandson sold it in 1930 at Sotheby's, where it brought £18,500, then a huge price. Soon after that it was acquired by George Huntington Hartford II, a supermarket heir who was in his 20s at the time. He donated it to Columbia University in 1958, and it hung in the president's office until 1968, when, because of student demonstrations, it was removed for safekeeping and put in storage.

In 1970 Columbia lent it to "Rembrandt After 300 Years," an exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts. That was the last time it was seen in public. Four years later Harold Diamond, a New York dealer, sold it to the Johnsons on behalf of the university, which used the proceeds to benefit an endowment fund.

Rembrandt From Private Collection To Be Sold at Christie's originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 21 Sep 2009 16:02:00 EST. But there's no reason it can't be done in style and in a green manner, whether for the kids or for you. Kids Konserve's waste-free lunch kit was designed by two environmentalists and comprises a recycled cotton lunch sack, cloth napkin, stainless steel beverage bottle, food cozy, two stainless steel food containers with plastic lids, and a recycled aluminum name tag. The stainless steel is made from safe, certified food-grade materials, much of it recycled. All Kids Konserve products are non-toxic, non-leaching, and BPA-, PVC-, phthalate-, and lead-free. Lunch kit, $40 - $42
Filed under: Dining, Green, Children

Kids Konserve Safe and Snazzy Lunch Kit originally appeared on Luxist on Sun, 20 Sep 2009 10:00:00 EST.

If you live in the NYC area, as I do, you are bombarded with radio and TV ads for Sleepy's, "the mattress professionals." Their never-ending self-promotion and "one-day sales" (until the next one, tomorrow) get on my last nerve. So why am I mentioning them? Because when I walked past a Sleepy's store last week I saw an ad in the window for the Spaldin Soy Bed. A soy bed? Really? I was intrigued.

Turns out that Spaldin, a Spanish company, makes its soy mattresses in four types: Aircell-Soy, Biocell-Soy, Sensitex-Soy, and Memory-Soy. All are made from biodegradable materials that are cultivated without pesticides and processed without harmful chemicals. Read more here.

Quality rest and environmental peace of mind are not inexpensive, however. While prices are not listed on the Spaldin site, this page at, ahem, Sleepy's, gives an idea of the price range of Spaldin beds. Original prices run from $1,400 - $5,000. As of this writing, Sleepy's has all four models on sale. Alas, green costs now but saves the planet for later.

Spaldin's Soy Beds originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 19 Sep 2009 16:01:00 EST. His 3,000-square-foot Montauk, N.Y., beach house sold this week in an all-cash deal for more than the $8.75 million asking price. Neither the buyer's name nor the exact amount of the sale has been released. The four-bedroom, three-bath home is located on 182 feet of prime beach property.

The lounge, so named for its many light effects, now greets guests with crystal chandeliers that glow red at night; seven-foot tall custom settees covered in midnight blue mohair, complete with their beaded sconces; a bar cabinet that glows blue in the evening; mirror-polished, handspun metal tables custom-designed by Brad Oldham (brother to designer Todd); beaded corkscrew floor lamps; and a custom-designed, under-lit onyx-topped communal-styled table seating up to eight.

My friend Nancy is scheduled to speak at a meeting being held at this Ritz, and I can't wait to hear what she thinks of the new spaces. See the gallery for before and after shots.

Gallery: Ritz-Carlton Atlanta Redesigned Foyer, Lobby & Lumen Lounge

Ritz-Carlton Atlanta Celebrates Its 25th With Redesigned Foyer, Lobby & Lounge originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 15:01:00 EST.
Known for its leather-trimmed, fitted outerwear, Canadian coat designer Mackage on September 1 opened its first stand-alone store, and chose NYC's hip Meatpacking District. I stopped by the store to check it out. The full Fall/Winter 2009 lines for men and women were on display in the small but classy store. Mirrors here and there make it easy (and tempting) to slip on a leather coat, puffy jacket, trench, or packable anorak. I commented to the rep helping me that the line looked familiar -- she said that certain styles were in Bloomingdale's and other high-end stores, but never the whole line, which is why Mackage decided to open its own store.

The coats are beautiful -- from wools to leathers to styles with fur trim, all are designed to be warm and fashionable, a rare combo. Even the packable anoraks are upscale. Rather than try to describe all here, check out the gallery for a few representative styles.

The store is a pop-up boutique, aka a limited-run, just for September, so Mackage can gauge interest and see if it wants to continue in this retail venue. So don't hesitate if you want to see the new line. There even will be special promotions this month with the chance to win a free coat or a free blow-out. Or ...

To see Mackage's Fall 2009 line, stop by the store (829 Washington St, NYC, 212-255-3807) on Thursday, September 10, as part of Fashion's Night Out, a worldwide event that coincides with Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Fashion authority Phillip Bloch will be on hand offering free tips and consultations from 7 - 9 p.m., Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon will be doing blowouts from 6 - 9 pm, and model Irina Lazareanu will DJ from 9 - 11 pm.

Gallery: Mackage Coats, Fall/Winter 2009

Mackage Opens First Retail Store, Chooses NYC originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 14:01:00 EST.

Tyra Banks has been all over the celeb news radar in the last few days because on the September 8 season premiere of the Emmy-winning The Tyra Show, she went au naturel with her hair -- "no wigs, extensions, no nothing," she said.

Doing this is part of Banks's mission to help redefine the emotional issue of beauty for women, both within and without, she said in a widely-circulated AP article. Banks said she's learned from past shows, especially when it comes to trusting the insights she developed in the fashion industry. "It's more honest. There's nothing worse than sitting there and pretending" ignorance while a guest delivers tips she could share herself.

And to do so, Banks, who appears on Forbes magazine's 2008 Celebrity 100 list of the rich and famous, launched her online magazine the same day that her natural hair made its debut. WWD reported that Tyra: Beauty Inside & Out -- which she's dubbed a "magaline" -- will share her expertise. "I'm really interested in helping women take control of their futures, take control of their destiny. One of my lines in my manifesto on the website is to be the CEO of your own life, be in control of your own life," Banks said.
Filed under: Services, Cosmetics and Fragrance, Celebrity Design

Tyra Banks Launches Online Fashion Magazine originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 06:02:00 EST.
