The outside of this Staten Island, N.Y., English Tudor was used to portray Don Corleone's residence in the classic 1972 film The Godfather. The home is in Staten Island's Todt Hill / Emerson Hill section, known for its large, pretty homes and good-sized lots. This home is surrounded by park-like grounds and inside boasts 12 rooms that comprise 8 bedrooms, 3 full baths, 1 half-bath, 1 three-quarter-bath, 2 fireplaces, and an English pub basement that includes a rec room and a storage room. There's also a living room, formal dining room, den, butler's pantry, and a laundry room with a chute from all three above-ground floors. Need more space? There's also a 4-car garage. For outdoor living, there's an in-ground pool.

This home has some personal meaning for me. I grew up right near it, and the band that played in the opening scene at daughter Connie's wedding played at my parents' wedding. My parents also like to tell the story about how they and some neighbors hung out near the home during the filming one day and were given some cookies, albeit stale, from the wedding scene.

Judging from the photos, the owners didn't bother to hire a professional stager, or even clean up much. The home appears to have good bones but needs needs refreshing and updating. It's listed for $2.9 million with Connie Profaci Realty. Check the link on her site for more photos.

We must thank sharp-eyed reader Caroline R. for telling us about this iconic home for being for sale. She sums it up well: "Considering the house's history it would make an exciting 'Estate of the Day' for the film buff, the gangster aficionado, or a real-life wannabe Don Corleone."

Scott Lechner, 53, charges as much as $900 for trees he ships from the Blue Mountains in North Carolina to his temporary business on Sixth Avenue and Spring Street. "A regular tree is beautiful, but one of our jumbos is majestic," Lechner says in the News. "It's not just a tree, it's an experience. And it's worth every penny."

Not all the trees are as much as $900. A 12-foot Fraser fir retails for about $400; it's a 17-footer that goes for $900. Lechner claims his clients have been celebrities, a Facebook executive, and SoHo residents. He notes that his prices are high because the trees come to his lot within 96 hours of being cut. But the News reports -- fueling the fire in the battle of the boroughs -- that the same types of trees can be found at a fraction of the price in Brooklyn.

The question that still nags at me is this: Who in New York has space for a 17-foot tree? I mean, obviously not counting the celebs, execs, and SoHo folks. I guess they all own two-floor apartments where the lower-level apartment ceiling has been removed, or the elusive brownstone.

AP reported that a father-son sports collectors team from Santa Barbara bought the bat that Kirk Gibson used for his historic home run in the 1988 World Series for $575,912.40 on November 14 in SCP Auctions' October/November auction, and also took home the four other Gibson artifacts on sale. The bid for Gibson's bat is the second-highest amount paid for a game-used bat, behind only Babe Ruth's signed bat used for the first home run at Yankee Stadium, which SCP sold in 2004 for $1.265 million.

Chad and Doug Dreier of the Dreier Group paid $1.19 million for the five items, which included Gibson's home run bat, his game-worn Los Angeles Dodgers jersey ($303,277.20), batting helmet ($153,388.80), NL Most Valuable Player Award ($110,293.20), and World Series trophy ($45,578.40). Proceeds from the sale of the World Series trophy and MVP award will benefit the Kirk Gibson Foundation to continue Gibson's support of Michigan State University athletic programs and to help fund his partial scholarship programs at Clarkston (Michigan) H.S. and Waterford (Michigan) H.S., in honor of his parents, who were educators at those schools.

Other items that found new homes at the auction are a 1934 Babe Ruth professional-model bat used by Ruth to hit career home run No. 702 ($137,865.60), a Ty Cobb H&B side-written professional model game-used bat ($75,330), and a 1953 Mickey Mantle New York Yankees game-worn, autographed road jersey ($62,256).

This year's Chocolate Show will feature book signings by award-winning authors; cooking demonstrations in two culinary theaters featuring renowned chocolatiers and pastry chefs who will share secrets of the trade; a Kid's Zone, presented by Young Chefs Academy; and -- something I'm sorry I missed on the 10th -- a Chocolate Fashion Show.

Founded in 1997 by Sylvie Douce and Franois Jeantet, French entrepreneurs with a passion for chocolate, The Chocolate Show was quickly adopted by New York City as one of its favorite shows, and has become the largest and one of the most popular events devoted to chocolate in the United States. The New York Chocolate Show is one of many international Salon du Chocolat events produced annually by Douce and Jeantet. In 2010, shows were or will be presented in Paris, Tokyo and six cities in Japan, Shanghai, Madrid, Cairo, and Moscow.

NYC's behemoth apartment complex Stuyvesant Town will be sold at auction on October 4. A state appeals court ruled against hedge fund manager William Ackman on September 28, paving the way for bondholders to sell the apartment complexes Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village in a foreclosure auction. About 25,000 people live in the 11,277 apartments, which are on the East Side near the FDR Drive between 14th and 23rd Streets.

The ruling denied a request by a joint venture between Ackman's Pershing Square Capital Management and Winthrop Realty Trust to reverse a lower court ruling that barred them from elbowing past holders of $3 billion in mortgage bonds to take control of the properties.

Tishman Speyer made news when it bought the 56-building complex for $5.4 billion in 2007 and again when it defaulted on its loans. Read about the complex's long history here and about its financial woes here.

Just when I think the fragrance market is saturated, along comes another celebrity-inspired offering. Hot Colombian singer, she of the hips that don't lie, Shakira, entered the market in September with "S by Shakira." The fragrance launched in more than 15,000 stores, including drugstores and mass- and mid-tier department stores.

"My feeling is that personal care and beauty should be effortless and accessible for everyone," Shakira said in a statement. "When you give someone a fragrance, you're giving them something of yourself. It's a gift of your essence."

The performer was involved in the creation and explored notes that were meaningful to her, in this case, chocolate and strawberries, baby skin, balsamic resins, and honey. The result features notes of jasmine, sandalwood, vanilla, amber, and resins.

Unless you never turn on the TV or read a fashion or gossip magazine, you cannot escape the Kardashian women and their style. And on September 10 (Fashion's Night Out), siblings Kourtney, Kim, and Khloé will launch the K-DASH by Kardashian clothing and accessories line exclusively for QVC. I couldn't find anything on the QVC site, but Kourtney and Kim both have sneak peeks of some clothing items on their blogs. The sisters are scheduled to be on QVC the night of the launch, live from Rockefeller Center on September 10 at 9 p.m. EST. The three also have a fashion line for Bebe and a skin-care line called PerfectSkin.

Real estate blog Curbed reported a few days ago that NYC/TriBeCa's 101 Warren Street has finally sold out, after four years, racking up $650 million in sales and becoming the "most successful condominium offering in the history of downtown Manhattan" in the process. Of the 35-story, 227-unit, the last one to sell was Skyhome 3460, a 4,518-square-foot duplex that sits in a glass box atop 101 Warren's granite facade, with uninterrupted views and wraparound terraces. According to StreetEasy, the 4-bedroom/4.5 bath condo was first listed for $15,664,000 in 2006, buying off a floorplan. It lingered, but as the building went up and the boom continued, the price inched up to $16,350,000. Then came the market's fall and with it a price cut to to $15,950,000. The unit was listed in contract in early August and sold a week later for $13,237,250, 15.5% below the original asking price and 19% off the peak price. The buyer is Maryland-based technology entrepreneur Robert Baruch and his wife, Kathy.

Former money manager Paul Greenwood, 62, pleaded guilty in late July to securities fraud, admitting that he cheated charities, schools, pension funds, and others out of $800-$900 million, even using some of those funds to buy collectible Steiff Teddy Bears and invest in horses. He faces up to 85 years in prison and hundreds of millions of dollars in fines. Sentencing is set for December 1, 2010, and an auction to sell the Teddy Bears and other "collectibles" is expected later this year.

Greenwood, a hedge fund manager and the general partner of WG Trading Co., pleaded guilty to six charges including conspiracy and securities fraud and is cooperating with the United States against co-defendant Steven Walsh, who pleaded not guilty. Greenwood and Walsh, his fellow manager of WG Trading and WG Investors, were indicted last July on charges that they conspired to defraud investors of $554 million. The U.S. said the scheme stretched from 1996 until their arrest in February 2009.

Greenwood said he entered into the conspiracy with Walsh and that the two claimed they had an "index arbitrage fund" that promised institutional investors high returns. He and Walsh took out money for their personal use, "in excess of $75 million," he said, spending the money on "a house, a horse farm [that previously was owned by Paul Newman and his wife, Joanne Woodward], and antiques."

According to the plea agreement, Greenwood will have to forfeit at least $331 million to the government, representing the money he and Walsh allegedly obtained as a result of their securities and wire fraud. Greenwood also agreed to pay the U.S. an $83.5 million judgment, the proceeds he "personally obtained" as a result of the fraud.

To wit, Guernsey's auction house said a copper chunk of nose crafted to fit the Statue of Liberty's face during her 1980s restoration will be auctioned on September 24 at the Park Avenue Armory. The two-foot-long section was one of four created to replace the Statue of Liberty's nose, and it's the only one that likely ever will be sold. Of the other three, one currently adorns the statue, one was destroyed, and another is in a private collection.

Other iconic items up for auction that day include a motorcycle from President John F. Kennedy's Dallas motorcade, James Dean's sunglasses, the last home run ball from the original Yankee Stadium, Barbra Streisand's first test record and a photo negative from Marilyn Monroe's nude calendar shoot.

He's back, this time with the news that a group of items from his archive, including his hand-drawn sketches for towers that helped define postmodern architecture, are to be sold. They had been held by one of Johnson's former partners, Raj Ahuja, who had them in storage for years. The cache contains more than 25,000 design sketches, working drawings, renderings, and photographs from the second half of Johnson's architectural career, covering more than 120 projects from 1968-1992. We've been hearing delicious rumors about the the triplex penthouse in the Dumbo section of Brooklyn for a while. Earlier this year the NY Post reported that both Ralph Lauren and Jay-Z had been spotted checking out this unusual space which is listed for $25 million. Now there may be a new deal in the works. According to NYC's amNY, the developer is in talks about a possible rent-to-own deal with a prospective taker.

The four-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom unit has unobstructed views of the New York Harbor and the Brooklyn Bridge through four, 14-foot glass-faced clocks that are synchronized to all show the same time. Word has it that this 3,200-square-foot apartment could rent easily for $60,000 a month.

Dr. Phil McGraw and his wife, Robin, have purchased a close to $30 million home in Beverly Hills that re-creates the Alamo. The home, on nearly three acres, features a formal dining room, huge entryway, library/media room, and a great room that combines the living room and kitchen. It totals 15,000 square feet and has five bedrooms, nine full baths, and two half-baths, and there's a giant fountain out front (of course). There's also a guest house above the garage with another bedroom and a full bath, as well as a pool and lighted tennis court. McGraw and his wife not long ago listed their current home for $16.5 million. The listing was with Jana Jones Duffy.

Gentlemen, it may be time to invest in one of Zegna's sweatproof suits. NYC free paper amNewYork test-drove the suit, which was made by Mohan's Custom Tailors in NYC for $1,200 and is made with Australian wool, said to wick moisture and cool the skin.

While the tester noted he certainly felt cooler than in other suits, this suit is not a panacea: "It's not like I'm wearing an air conditioner," said Christopher Sabatini (at right), amNewYork's design director, who tested the anti-sweat suit in the subways, "but sweat is not rolling down my back." It took Sabatini 10 minutes to start sweating on the Penn Station platform; he said he would usually "be a flood" by then.

No doubt this suit would come in handy in other hot climes, like New Orleans, Miami, Phoenix, D.C., or (your hot city here).

You can get a facial at almost any spa, and even in some nail and hair salons. But will it be platinum?

If you visit the spa at the Ritz-Carlton in NYC, it can be. Since the spring, the spa has been offering The Platinum Rare Facial, a 90-minute treatment that is priced at $410, typically including product samples. Add a 20% tip and you're at $500.

According to the "Vain Glorious" department in The New York Times's T Magazine, "This ultra-pampering facial is more like a spa manicure and pedicure, massage and facial in one. It's performed by both a nail technician and an aesthetician -- the former soaks, scrubs and swathes the extremities in the brand's lavish products while the latter massages the neck and shoulders in between steps of the main event: a customized facial using La Prairie's Platinum Collection (including Cellular Cream Platinum Rare, which retails for $650 per ounce)."

Before the treatment, guests are invited to relax in the upscale locker room and lounge, outfitted with cool and soothing marble, a steam room with a tub of ice and cucumbers waiting outside, and a corner with chairs, fresh fruit, and dried snacks. Then guests select the music they wish to be played during the treatment. The signature seems to be the application of Cellular Cream Platinum Rare at the end of what the the Ritz calls "an experience that transcends the ordinary in every way with age-defying benefits."
