Moto Guzzi V12 X Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Well-known designers Miguel Galluzzi (who penned the original Ducati Monster and Aprilia RSV4) and Pierre Terblanche (who designed the classic Ducati Supermono, 999, Multistrada 620 and 1000 and Hypermotard) set out to redefine Moto Guzzi, a classic Italian motorcycle marque known these days more for building somewhat stodgy machines instead of anything overtly modern or sporty, with a trio of concepts bikes late last year. We'd say the duo succeeded.

Hell For Leather's Wes Siler got the inside scoop from the two designers, and he's documented it all via an interview and the first studio shots ever taken of the V12 Le Mans, Strada and V12 X. Both concepts are visually interesting, though we find the X particularly stunning with its supermoto-inspired styling and blacked-out details.

Take a look at both bikes in our high-res image gallery below, and check out HFL for more details on the Strada, V12 X and Le Mans.

Ducati has managed to refine its already formidable middleweight sportbike for 2011 by adding more power via all new cylinder heads, pistons, throttle bodies and camshafts. According to the Italian manufacturer, horsepower is up six ponies to 140, which, when coupled with the 369 claimed weight, means the new 848 EVO is the most powerful bike in its class and even has a better power-to-weight ratio than the 2005 999.

Other top-level components include the massive Brembo Monobloc front braking calipers and a cross-mounted steering stabilizer, both of which are said to have been developed through racing feedback. The bike should get its official unveiling this weekend from the MotoGP race in California and sales are slated to begin later this summer. Asking price stands at $12,995 for the blacked-out Dark Edition or $13,995 in bright Ducati Red.

Ducati Power Cruiser sketch - Click above to enlarge

Ducati, an Italian motorcycle manufacturer known for producing some of the highest performing race-bred motorcycles in existence, is apparently looking to branch into new and untapped markets. Evidence of such can be seen in the sketch above, which is said to have been leaked by a dealership that was privy to the company's future plans.

It's expected that Ducati will introduce the world to its power cruiser concept at the EICMA motorcycle show in Italy later this year, but the image above gives us some hints as to what we can expect. First and foremost, a liquid-cooled Testastretta V-twin engine with the Multistrada 1200's 11-degree valve overlap angle will be featured. The mill should pump out 150 or more horsepower and will be controlled by a ride-by-wire system with traction control.

Perhaps the most controversial feature amongst Ducati fans is sure to be the massive rear tire, which is held firmly in place by a single-sided swingarm. Spy shots indicate that the rear hoop may be as wide as a 240, which will certainly have negative effects on the bike's handling characteristics. In contrast, inverted front forks and monobloc calipers are up-level items included up front.

As always, Ducati will use its trademark trellis chassis, and the power cruiser will reportedly sport a reasonable 40-degree lean angle. Stay tuned for more as the EICMA Show gets closer.

2010 MV Agusta Brutale 1090RR - Click above for high-res image gallery

MV Agusta is known for producing some of the most highly desirable naked and fully faired sportbikes in existence anywhere in the world, and the Italian manufacturer has seen fit to update both its Brutale and F4 superbike for the 2010 model year. But what if a maximum output of 144 horsepower from an upright naked bike just won't cut it for you?

For the truly power mad among us, MV Agusta has just announced its new Cannonball Kit for the 2010 Brutale 1090RR which raises horsepower by 21 for a new total of 165. Included amongst the new goodies are a new ECU, cylinder head, camshafts, valves, and titanium exhaust system.

For what it's worth, this kit is supposed to be for off-road use only, meaning it's a race kit of sorts. Of course, not many people buy Brutales to race with, so we'd imagine most of the Cannonball Kit-equipped Brutales will end up on the road in an questionably legal state.

10,000 Lamborghini Gallardo rolls down the line

Lamborghini, sometimes considered the more exotic of the two well-known Italian supercar manufacturers, has announced that it has built the 10,000th Gallardo. Says Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini:

The Lamborghini brand is extreme, uncompromising and Italian, and the Lamborghini Gallardo has played an exemplary role in defining and delivering our brand reputation into our worldwide markets. Today Lamborghini is represented in 45 countries by over 120 dealers, with the strength and presence of the Gallardo product playing a significant role in the growth and recognition of our brand.

While it seems unlikely that Lamborghini will lose its reputation for building highly desirable exotic machinery any time soon, we do wonder what such large production numbers for the Gallardo might mean for the model's status as a collectible.

Whatever the case, lucky number 10,000 is painted up in Midas Yellow and is headed for China.

Never let it be said that Confederate Motors lacks persistence. Despite facing a number of seemingly insurmountable hurdles, including the destruction of its operations in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and a subsequent move to Alabama, the American purveyors of highly desirable motorcycles is back at it again with a new dark take on its own P120 Fighter.

The new P120 Black Flag uses the same fuel-carrying frame as the standard Fighter, along with the standard double-wishbone front ford assembly. Also in use is the carry-over 120-cubic-inch V-twin engine with 160 horsepower and 135 pound-feet of torque... not that any more power is necessary.

Confederate plans to build just 50 examples of the P120 Black Flag for an unknown sum. Whatever that asking price may be, buyers are sure to appreciate the bike's exclusivity and detailing. See for yourself in our gallery below.

Jaguar XKR 75 - Click above to enlarge

Jaguar is celebrating its 75th birthday this year with a special limited edition of its stunningly beautiful XKR coupe, called, fittingly enough, the XKR 75. What sporting Jaguar would be complete without a compelling drivetrain? No worries in that department, as the British marque has managed to squeeze 20 more horsepower from its 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine.

The total of 530 horsepower and 483 pound-feet can push the luxury coupe to 60 miles per hour in just 4.4 seconds (.2 seconds quicker than the standard XKR) and on to a governed top speed of 174 mph. Of course, the upgrades extend past the powertrain.

A new Stratus Grey finish is used on the XKR 75, along with red brake calipers that contrast the 20-inch gloss Vortex forged lightweight alloy wheels. Finally, there is an optional body graphic that runs from the front bumper to the rear haunches rounds out the package.

Inside, the XKR 75 gets charcoal leather with ivory stitching, a dash and center console finished in gloss piano black and a Jet suedecloth. Just 75 of these special edition models will be built. The car will debut at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed and will be made available to order from July 2010 in the UK priced from £85,500.

1:18 scale Bugatti Veyron replica in solid gold - Click above for image gallery

The Bugatti Veyron is one of the most expensive automobiles in the world. Somewhat paradoxically, a couple of enterprising fellows have managed to craft a replica that's even pricier than the original on which it's based, and they've done it by downsizing.

Of course, the fact that it's made from 24 karat gold and encrusted with 7.2 carats worth of diamonds adds mightily to its £2 million ($2.93 million at today's exchange rates) asking price. Yes, that is indeed a higher sum than it would take to put a real, full-size Veyron in your driveway.

Robert Gulpen of Munich & Stuart Hughes of Liverpool only plan to craft three examples of the 1:18 scale solid gold Bugatti Veyron replica, so we suggest you get on the ball if you've decided your living room mantle. See it in all its fully functional glory in our image gallery below.

NCR Millona 16 - Click above for high-res image gallery

You might think that the Ducati Desmosedici RR, the Italian firm's limited production MotoGP motorcycle for the street, is plenty good enough in stock form. And you'd mostly be correct, but then again there's always room for improvement, right?

Enter legendary motorcycle tuner NCR, which has taken the standard (is there really such a thing?) Desmosedici and turned it into what may be the most desirable sportbike on the planet. To do so, the company employed lots of carbon fiber. The composite material makes up everything from the frame, rear subframe, swingarm, fuel tanks, fairings and wheels to items such as the paddock stand.

A minimalist undertail exhaust system is bent from lightweight titanium, and NCR completes the package with a racing slipper clutch, lightened gearbox, ceramic matrix disc brakes with Brembo monobloc caliper, fully adjustable top-shelf Ohlins suspension front and rear and finally a fully custom ECU with traction control, data acquisition and telemetry systems.

All told, the NCR Millano 16 weights just 319 pounds and is motivated by over 200 horsepower at the rear wheel. Contact NCR for pricing information, if you want one. And, you do want one... trust us.

Rolls-Royce is reporting sales of 678 automobiles through the first five months of 2010. Although that might not sound like a lot of vehicles at first blush, it represents a 146-percent increase over the same period a year ago. Company head Torsten Müller-Ötvös expects sales to continue in their upward path throughout the remainder of the year, saying that the automaker will post figures "at least double the volume of last year."

While the slight uptick in the global economy may have something to do with the sales resurgence, the real driving force behind the increase is the new Ghost model for 2010. With a base price of around $250,000, the Ghost represents a substantial savings over the revered Phantom, which starts at some $380,000 and quickly rises from there. And while the Ghost may be less expensive than its big brother, there's no doubt that it is every bit the exclusive luxury ride that its new owners will expect.

Daimler, the German parent company of Mercedes-Benz, has a long history of fuel cell development, as does Toyota. Both automakers have been busily developing their separate hydrogen fuel cell technology since the early 1990s, and it should come as no surprise that such projects don't come cheap.

As such, the two giant companies are reportedly pounding out a partnership that will see them jointly developing hydrogen fuel cell technology. According to the Financial Times Deutschland (via Reuters), Toyota and Daimler plan "extensive cooperation in the field of fuel cells for electric cars." At this point, neither automaker is willing to comment on the report.

General Motors, Ford, Nissan, Honda and Hyundai are also working to make hydrogen fueling a reality, but some significant hurdles still remain, including high cost and the lack of a suitable fueling infrastructure. Time will tell if high-profile partnerships, such as the one apparently being struck between Daimler and Toyota, will result in any zero-emission consumer vehicles.

Happen to know where to locate an appropriately dusty old collectible car? If so, we suggest you get your extraction gear ready as the Fairfield County Concours d'Elegance has just announced that it is adding a Barn Find category to its event scheduled to take place September 12, 2010.

Any appropriate vehicle is eligible to enter, but the organizers and judges are looking for something specific. Explains Tom Cotter, author of several books on the subject such as The Cobra in the Barn and The Hemi in the Barn, that would be "a vehicle that has been previously unknown, or known and unattainable, or discovered through obscure means; all with a great story."

Only 20 vehicles will be accepted and the deadline for entry currently sits at July 1st. Granted, that's not a lot of time to get a vehicle ready to be shown, but the good news is the event calls for machines that are in the exact condition as found, as exemplified by the classic Chevrolet Corvette (which is slated to be the subject of Cotter's next book, The Corvette in the Barn) seen above.

Jim Wangers' 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge - Click above for high-res image gallery

It's a little-known fact that classic and collectible car values have outperformed the stock market over the last few decades. Generally speaking, the very best examples of these fine automobiles go up for auction at specific events that take place just a few times each year, such as at Barrett-Jackson or Russo and Steele in Arizona.

Every once in a while, though, a collector finds a reason to either thin out his herd of cars or gets out of the business entirely. Such is the case with legendary advertising executive Jim Wangers, who worked with Pontiac during its heyday in the mid 1960s and early 1970s. As you might expect, Wangers owns quite a collection of classic Pontiac muscle cars and sportscars, and a number of them are now up for sale.

Included amongst the 10 machines Wangers currently has for sale are GTOs from 1965, 1966 and 1969. Also well represented are Firebirds (1967) and Trans Ams, including one from 1969, the iconic car's first year and the rarest vintage of all. See each machine in our high-res image gallery below.

Strand Craft 122 Super Yacht - Click above for high-res image gallery

As near as we can tell, the single biggest issue with the average run-of-the-mill yacht is the distinct lack of storage. No, not so much storage for your clothing or personal goods... we're talking about a garage for that favorite supercar of yours, of course. Strand Craft has taken the issue to heart with its latest design, the 122 Super Yacht.

This creation, which exists only in renderings at the moment, would feature a built-in garage in the stern, which naturally would be filled with a bespoke supercar of its very own. Not much is known about the supposed supercar, other than the fact that it would be powered by an 880-horsepower V12 engine and have a top speed of over 230 miles per hour.

As you might expect, the yacht itself is no slouch in the power or speed departments. In fact, its twin Rolls-Royce engines coupled to the extra Booster engine put out an impressive 14,000 horsepower combined - enough to push the 122 to speeds of 55 knots. See for yourself in our high-res image gallery below.

BMW is out to prove that Ultimate Driving Machines can also be Efficient Driving Machines. The famed German automaker is already dabbling in hybrid technology with models such as the X6 and large, range-topping 7 Series, but soon the marque will expand the fuel-saving technology to its mainstream 5 Series and even 3 Series models.

Speaking at the automaker's normally scheduled annual meeting, Chairman Dr. Norbert Reithofer said that the upcoming 5 Series ActiveHybrid will go into production in 2011. This application should pair a larger 40-kilowatt electric motor to the mild hybrid system currently used in the 7 Series, and it will reportedly be capable of powering itself using electricity only. Closely following the 5 Series is likely to be a hybrid version of the next-generation 3 Series.

Interestingly, Reithofer also pointed out that BMW is poised for future success as it is apparently very highly thought of by the younger generation.

BMW is the most prestigious brand among Generation Y. Generation Y refers to the young people born between the late 1970s and the year 1994 in the U.S. This consumer group has an annual spending capacity of 200 billion dollars - and the most prestigious brands to this young generation are BMW and Chanel.

You can find the rest of Reithofer's speech after the break.

Production 2011 Land Rover LRX rendering - Click above to enlarge

When you think of Land Rover, it's likely that scenes of bushwacking and overland travels spring to mind, and perhaps more recently, some of the most luxurious sport utility vehicles in the world. But the times, they are a'changing, and Land Rover needs to improve the efficiency of its brand of vehicles just the same as every other automaker the world over.

Hence, it should probably come as little surprise that the famous British marque has announced both its first-ever front-wheel drive model and its first-ever production hybrid. It remains to be seen whether or not the automaker is able to bake any off-road capabilities into its upcoming small Range Rover, which most of the world knows as the LRX.

Land Rover says the front-wheel-drive compact Range Rover will go on sale in 2011 and claims it will be the lightest and most fuel efficient vehicle the company has ever offered. Following two years later will be a hybrid version of the same vehicle that will pair a 3.0-liter diesel engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a large electric motor capable of powering the vehicle for 20 miles using no fossil fuels at all.
Triumph has updated its Sprint sport touring platform for the 2011 model year, and the bike seems to favor the touring side of the sport touring relationship a little more heavily than before. The 1050cc inline-triple powerplant puts out five more horsepower than before, now totaling 130 horses. Standard equipment includes anti-lock brakes, 8.2-gallon saddlebags and a 12-volt power port. Heated grips, a taller windscreen, gel seats and a large top case for additional storage are available and desirable options.

The 2011 bike will be recognizable due to its smoother fairing, new lighting up front and the single low-mount exhaust that replaces the previous underseat system. The 2011 Triumph Sprint will carry a $13,199 starting price when it hits dealerships this fall. Check it out for yourself in our high-res image gallery below.

Audi e-tron Detroit Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Our British friends at Autocar are citing unknown "high-ranking Audi insiders in Ingolstadt" as saying that there is a strong likelihood that a new Audi R4, Volkswagen BlueSport and possibly an unnamed entry-level model from Porsche are in the offing.

Assuming there is a degree of truth to the report from the British mag, the R4 would get a pair of turbocharged gasoline engines (displacing just 1.4-liters and 1.6-liters, respectively) along with the intriguing option of a 2.0-liter turbodiesel mill. Previously, Audi has shown off a small sportscar concept, seen above in the image gallery from Luxist's sister-site, Autoblog, powered by an all-electric powertrain.

Volkswagen, the huge German automaker that owns both Audi and Porsche, will have the final say in the development of all three machines. The good news is that Autocar's unnamed insider reports, "Scale is important to a project like this... But with three different car makers working to a common goal, the chances [of it getting the go-ahead] look good."

Looking to get yourself into a new Porsche Panamera but don't want or need the performance of a 400-horsepower V8 engine? Good news, then. Porsche has just announced its new V6-powered Panamera with a starting price for the RWD model at $74,400 and the AWD Panamera 4 at $78,900 (plus destination).

Porsche's new 3.6-liter V6 puts out 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, which is a decrease of an even hundred horses and 74 lb-ft from the 4.8-liter V8. For what it's worth, the V8 Panamera S costs an additional $15,400 over the base V6.

Included in the base price of the V6 Porsche Panamera is the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) dual-clutch transmission. Also standard are an electric moonroof, power liftgate and the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with navigation.

Porsche is also including its Auto Stop/Start technology, which should have the desirable effect of improving fuel efficiency somewhat. At this time, no official EPA numbers are are available, but Porsche says the car will not be subject to a gas guzzler tax. Check out the gallery of high-res images below and hit the jump for the official press release.

Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Break Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Mercedes-Benz made a big splash back in 2005 with the introduction of the CLS sedan, which was based on the midsize E-Class but sported much more attractive bodywork. The automaker is set to continue pushing those boundaries with the new CLS Shooting Break Concept, which is just now debuting at the Beijing Motor Show.

First things first: While the moniker is more often spelled 'shooting brake,' Mercedes tells us that the correct spelling is actually 'break,' as in breaking a horse that draws a carriage. Whatever. It's clear that the CLS Shooting Break will be compared to the BMW 5 Series GT, and we think the Benz has a much more distinctive and attractive appearance.

The base engine for the next CLS will likely be a turbocharged and direct injected 3.5-liter V6 engine that will offer a little over 300 horsepower. Optional will be a turbocharged 4.6-liter V8 that puts out around 435 horsepower and over 400 pound-feet of torque. Power will be sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Naturally, we can also expect an AMG version of the next CLS that should get the automaker's turbocharged and direct injected 5.5-liter V8 with up to 563 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. A sedan is sure to join the Shooting Break when the car finally makes it into production. Check out the high-res image gallery below and see the full press release after the break.

Ducati has just officially announced its next middleweight Monster, and it's slated hit the market in June. Sharing the same air-cooled L-twin engine as the Hypermotard 796, the new Monster 796 will also carry a similar $9,995 price tag as its same-sized sibling.

With 87 horsepower and 56 pound-feet of torque, along with a claimed 367-pound weight, the Monster 796 should offer plenty of performance for its intended market. Comfort should be improved over previous Monsters due to the higher handlebar and redesigned seat. Ducati also includes a single sided swingarm, four piston Brembo brakes, an APTC slipper clutch, blackened foot rests and new five spoke wheels to complete the package.

The new Monster 796 will be available in white, black and Ducati red - each with the expected trellis frame and wheel striping in red - Ducati will also launch a new Monster Art program, allowing owners of the 696, 796 or 1100 models the ability to interchange tank covers, mudguards, bikini fairings and seat covers in one of ten new hues and liveries. See the press release after the break for more.
BMW 535i Gran Turismo - Click above for high-res image gallery

Depending on who you ask, BMW is either at the forefront of an exciting new automotive genre with the 5 Series Gran Turismo, or is inventing market segments with no real purpose other than to grab several thousand new sales from those who simply must be seen in the latest trendy niche. In other words, the 5 Series GT is nothing if not polarizing.

For now, it seems that you can put such luxury brands Lexus and Infiniti in the latter camp, though fellow upmarket Japanese automaker Acura is headed down a similar path as its German counterpart with the new ZDX - at least with regard to the X6. Speaking to Auto Observer at the New York Auto Show, Ben Poore, Nissan North America's vice president of the Infiniti business unit, said, "What [we are] seeing is a much stronger preference (among consumers) for a trunk."

Granted, some may see little difference between such vehicles as the 5 Series GT and Infiniti's own EX and FX crossovers, but Poore suggests the machines aren't direct competitors. "I'd rather be on (either) the crossover styling or the trunk styling," he said. Dave Nordstrom, Lexus' vice president of marketing, concurs, saying, "We don't have any plans for it right now. We have not seen the demand from our customers - but we continue to look at it."

The apocalypse is nigh. How else can we explain how, for the first time ever, Audi managed to outsell Mercedes-Benz in global sales for the first quarter of 2010? Before we break out our Mayan calendars and go all 2012 on you, here are the hard numbers: Audi sold 264,100 vehicles worldwide between January and March while Mercedes sold 248,500 units over the same time period. For what it's worth, BMW has yet to release its final first-quarter sales figures.

On second thought, perhaps we should be holding back our inner Nostradamus. Audi has repeatedly signaled its desire and intent to become the world's leading luxury car brand by 2015, which would mean passing both of its German rivals, the aforementioned Mercedes-Benz and BMW, along with Japanese automaker Lexus. Plus, Audi offers a pretty compelling lineup of vehicles with which to do battle with those formidable competitors.

According to Autocar, the biggest single contributor to Audi's passing of Mercedes-Benz is the Chinese market, where Audi sells twice as many vehicles per year as Mercedes-Benz. In fact, one out of every five Audis built is sold in China. Considering how rapidly the Chinese market is expanding, Audi is certainly finding itself in an enviable position. Time will tell if it's able to maintain that growth in the face of constant pressure from its German and Japanese rivals.

Porsche's 60 year anniversary in the United States - Click above for high-res image gallery

It's hard to believe that 2010 marks Porsche's 60th anniversary of doing good business here in the United States. Though, you might also say that very few automakers have done as much as Porsche in as short an amount of time, which we'd say certainly speaks to the ongoing quality of the German automaker's wares.

Way back in 1950, Ferry Porsche and two Austrians by the names of Max Hoffman and Johnny von Neumann got together to bring the very first Porsche 356 to New York. Ferry Porsche reportedly said he'd be happy to have just five buyers per year... to which Hoffman retorted, "If I can't sell five a week, I'm not interested."

Thankfully, there were somewhat more than five interested parties in those first few years (32 cars imported by 1951, to be exact), despite the fact that the little sportscar had but 44 horsepower from its diminutive air-cooled 1.1-liter powerplant and a sticker price that matched the standard-of-the-world Cadillac convertible of the same era. By 1954, 30-percent of all Porsche production went to Hoffman.

That took care of the eastern half of the United States, leaving the lucrative California market to be ably handled by von Neumann, who bought one of Hoffman's Porsches in New York in 1951 and drove it back to California. The rest, as they say, is history - the Far Left State would go on to become Porsche's largest single market and those early pioneers would prove to be a stepping stone to much greater things with a sportscar heritage that continues down to this day.

Read more about the 60-year history of Porsche cars in North America in the press release after the break, and don't miss the accompanying historic photos from Porsche - plus one not-so-historic shot that replicates one of the earliest photographs of a Porsche 550 Spyder in New York City. The more things change, the more they stay the same... true both of New York's skyline and Porsche's timeless roadsters. See below.

style="text-align: center;">Mercedes-Benz F800 Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Rumors of a smaller, entry-level new saloon for Mercedes-Benz's in-house tuning division AMG just won't seem to go away. As before, these latest reports suggest that the next-generation of the B-Class would be the model to get the AMG fitment, but Autocar is now suggesting that an entirely new type of engine will power the car.

The new AMG engine would reportedly be based on a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that is currently slated for the CLS350. The mill would be downsized to 3.2 liters and upfitted with an electrically operated pressure wave supercharger. Not too familiar with the technology? Don't fret, neither were we. The all-knowing Wiki comes to the rescue.

Autocar further posits that the engine would make somewhere around 400 horsepower and could potentially send its prodigious power output to all four wheels with a rear-biased power split. If it ever comes to fruition, the new AMG model would go up against the likes of the Volkswagen Golf R, BMW 1 Series and any other entry-level hotted-up luxe models in the works. Styling would follow the example set by the F800 Style concept from the Geneva Motor Show.

Porsche 918 Spyder Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

If you build it, they will come. That would be our advice if Porsche decided to ask us if it should offer a production car based on the 918 Spyder Concept that wowed attendees at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. Somehow, though, we'd imagine that the German automaker would want a more solid business case than our personal opinions. Good news, then.

Rumor has it (by way of Automobile Magazine) that Porsche is actively working with its dealers to find enough buyers who are ready and willing to plunk down their hard-earned dollars on the next halo car from the quintessential sportscar maker. Porsche R&D chief Wolfgang Dürheimer says that the company would be rather pleased "if customer feedback is positive and we end up over time with about 1000 firm orders."

If Porsche were to put its hybrid 918 Spyder into limited production, it wouldn't be without precedent. Back in the early 2000s, Porsche used a similar tactic to put its awesome Carrera GT on the market... and we all know how that turned out, don't we? As we said before: If you build it, they will come. Trust us. Oh, and there's a bunch of new images in our high-res gallery below... just in case you're in the market for a new desktop background.

McLaren seems to think it's possible to have your cake and eat it too. Judging by the company's past and present performances, we wouldn't doubt them. Managing Director Anthony Sheriff sat down with Inside Line at the company's official launch, and plenty of interesting information was gleaned. For instance, McLaren has committed itself to producing the lowest carbon emissions per horsepower of any car on sale.

In order to promote both efficiency and performance, McLaren has set its target on reduced weight. Says Mark Vinnels, McLaren Automotive's program director, "Weight will always be the fundamental enemy of what we're trying to achieve. Our focus will be on achieving the best lightweight solutions at the given price point." That likely means that future models from the sportscar manufacturer will use exotic materials, possibly including heavy doses of carbon fiber and composites in structural areas.

Powertrains won't be neglected when it comes to efficiency either. Last summer, McLaren posted an ad looking for a hybrid powertrain engineer. Sheriff wouldn't rule out hybrid drivetrains, but was coy about their future applications. "We're about applying high technology to make our cars faster and more efficient. And we may make things in a different way to what you expect," he said.

BMW Confirms Plans to Offer Front-Wheel Drive Cars

If there's one thing that's certain in this crazy world we live in, it's that Ultimate Driving Machines are driven by their rear wheels. Sure, there's an occasional all-wheel drive model thrown in for good measure, but even those revert to the tried-and-true RWD when extra traction from the front two contact patches isn't deemed necessary or desirable. Well, alert the media (oh, wait...): BMW has confirmed the rumors that it will build front-wheel drive automobiles.

At the Annual Accounts Press Conference for 2010, Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW, had this to say:

[The small car] segment is expected to grow further. And we will take advantage of this opportunity. We are exploring the possibility of developing a joint architecture for the front and four-wheel drive systems of these cars. In other words: There will be front-wheel drive BMWs in the smaller vehicle classes in the future.

Heresy, BMW fans? We wouldn't worry too much - there seems little chance that BMW will make a wholesale switch from powering the rear wheels to the fronts, especially for its mainstream models like the 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series - but the addition of a FWD chassis will make it easier for the automaker to share platforms with other companies and to "reduce [its] fleet's carbon-emissions worldwide by at least another 25 percent between 2008 and 2020."

In fact, take it from Reithofer himself:

BMW will continue to be a sport-inspired brand. We at the BMW Group continue to deliver maximum performance, tackle new challenges and sharpen our competitive edge.

Click past the break for the complete text of Reithofer's speach.

Aston Martin is an automaker with a history that's indelibly linked with racing... not to mention beautiful designs, attractive colors and, um, James Bond. But the British automaker has more recently signaled its intent to be known for offering a lavishly equipped fuel efficient city car that focus solely on transportation duties and not 0 to 60 times or top speeds.

Mostly. A quick run through the automaker's website shows that its not willing to let the Cygnet degrade its performance and racing image entirely. To wit, the little urban commuter is pictured in a number of scenarios that don't exactly scream "efficient transportation." For instance, there's an orange-helmeted Stig lookalike posing with the Aston in one scene.

Note too that the Cygnet can be customized with three different racing paint schemes, two of which focus on the classic British Racing Green of Aston Martin's current racers and a third that shows the Cygnet painted up in iconic Gulf livery. Feel free to check it out for yourself at AstonMartin.com.

2011 Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible - Click above for high-res image gallery

It may not be the most interesting news you read all week, but we now have a date at which all Bentley Continentals will be able to gulp down whiskey with the best of 'em: June. Well, not exactly whiskey, but ethanol's pretty close. Bentley had made the announcement (sans date) at the Geneva Motor Show when it showed off the Continental Supersports Convertible.

Bentley sees this move as a big first step in reaching its stated goal of offering an entirely biofuel-capable lineup by 2012. In its latest form, Bentley's twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 offers up 621 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. That's sufficient to push the big Conti' to 60 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds and on up to a top speed of 202 mph.

As the Continental is Bentley's most popular model line by far, this means that over half of all cars the luxury brand sells this year will be flex-fuel models. For those keeping track, the Brooklands coupe (which will soon be discontinued), Azure sedan and the soon-to-be-released Mulsanne sedan (the replacement for the long-running Arnage) are still not yet biofuel capable. According to Automotive News, the Mulsanne will be E85-capable shortly after its launch later this year.
Aston Martin builds some of the fastest, most desirable and undoubtedly most beautiful cars in the world by following a very simple formula. Front engine, rear-drive coupes (and sometimes sedans) powered by the biggest, most powerful engines available. As you would expect, fuel efficiency has historically been of very little concern.

Nowadays, though, that formula for success has a major flaw in that a line-up full of gas-guzzling machines doesn't make the populace (well, at least large portions of it) or the government particularly happy. Hence, Aston Martin has decided to offer another kind of vehicle entirely, one that hopefully will allow it continue merrily selling its favored line of supercars. Explains Aston Martin CEO Ulrich Bez:

First, we need a more sustainable product line-up... Second, we need to satisfy demand where we know it exists... Thirdly, we need to bring the company's fleet carbon emissions down. The Cygnet is perfect for that. This is just a small, stylish and efficient runabout: it doesn't need batteries or flywheels to be that way. So it's not pretending to be something it's not.

As if we didn't have enough reasons to look forward to the Pebble Beach Concours this August - beautiful weather, beautiful machinery and beautiful scenery, to name but a few - news comes by way of Autocar in the U.K. that Morgan plans to debut a new 2+2 concept at the famed event on the California coast.

Details on the new model are, as you might expect at this early stage in the game, rather hard to come by. Apparently, though, the new car is meant to preview a production model that Morgan hopes to put into production in 2012 or 2013. No word on on the drivetrain, though we'd expect some sort of modern BMW powerplant, but we're told it will slot somewhere below the brand's range-topping Aero.

We're all very well aware that the recently sealed deal between Spyker and General Motors means good things for the ailing Saab brand - in fact, without Spyker's eleventh-hour intervention, the Swedish automaker would have been lost to the annals of history entirely. Apparently, though, the Saab tie-up will bring good things to come from Spyker too.

Believe it or not, it was four years ago that Spyker first showed off its Peking-to-Paris luxury SUV at the Geneva Motor Show, and now company head Victor Muller has reportedly announced at this year's festivities in Geneva that the monster 'ute is back on track. Not surprisingly, the finalized handshake with The General is partly to thank for the reinvigorated D12 program.

Consider the years of technical expertise that Spyker gained with it brought Saab on board, not to mention the additional production capability and manpower. It remains to be seen what powertrain Spyker will choose for its hulking SUV, but previous rumors had a supercharged mill from Cadillac underhood. We shall see.

Audi A8 Hybrid design study - Click above for high-res image gallery

In addition to a very interesting electrified A1 e-tron concept, Audi is also showing off a hybridized version of its range-topping A8 sedan at this year's Geneva Motor Show, which it claims offers V6-levels of power with four-cylinder fuel efficiency and emissions. Backing up that claim are reported power figures of 245 horsepower (45 of which can be supplied from the electric motor) and 354 pound-feet of torque. The run to 62 miles per hour is said to take about 7.5 seconds and fuel mileage comes in at 38 miles per gallon on the EU cycle. That's about a 20-percent improvement over the standard car.

As a full hybrid, the A8 design study can run on electricity only for up to 1.2 miles at speeds of 40 miles per hour or less. Above that, the 2.0-liter TFSI engine takes over. A lithium ion battery pack of unknown capacity resides in the trunk, but Audi makes sure to point out that there's still over 14 cubic-feet of space back there for storage. The German automaker also makes pains to assure that the A8 Hybrid is still "an extremely dynamic car" - one that just so happens to return good fuel efficiency.

Check out our gallery of high-res images below, and be sure to note the Prism Silver paint with Spectra Flair (yes, really) rainbow effect and 21-inch two-color wheels. Also, check out the prominent hybrid badging on each front fender along with the door sills (illuminated, naturally) and inside on the new Powermeter in the instrument cluster. Still want more?
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG F1 Safety Car - Click above for high-res image gallery

Sometimes, speed equals safety. Perhaps nowhere else is that more true than on a racetrack when you're piloting the so-called safety car and you've got a pack of Formula One cars riding up your tailpipe. Good thing, then, that the newest safety car to be used for F1 duty is the 571-horsepower Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

Interestingly, that tailpipe is the only mechanical change made to the SLS AMG to bring it up to Official F1 Safety Car specs. Mercedes-Benz left everything else on the car, including the engine, suspension and carbon-ceramic brakes, stock. Not that you won't be able to tell the difference between the Safety Car and a standard Gullwing - a new carbon fiber hood with front-mounted camera, rear number plate with a camera and 700 LEDs and an "aerodynamically optimised roof light bar" (for the first time using all LEDs) ensure nobody can miss this particular SLS AMG.

For what it's worth, the SLS AMG replaces the SL63 AMG, which had been the Official Safety Car for the previous two seasons. Again, the F1 Safety Car will be piloted by former DTM driver Bernd Mayländer. Also, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Estate (that's wagon to us Americans) will serve as the Official F1 Medical Car. Let's hope that one doesn't see too much track time, eh? Click past the break for the official press release.
Lotus has just formally introduced a new 400-plus horsepower sportscar concept. That news in and of itself would be enough to pique our interest, but the rest of the car's spec sheet makes the Evora 414E Hybrid an astonishingly intriguing concept vehicle. As you surely surmised by now, this two-seat sportster is a hybrid, specifically an extended-range electric vehicle that features a pair of rear-mounted electric motors and a 1.2-liter three-cylinder gas-powered engine. Why not fully electric? According to Lotus:

With regard to the total lifetime CO2 emissions of the vehicle, including the energy required to manufacture and run it, the range extender solution has a lower overall CO2 footprint than a fully electric car of comparable performance and operating range running with a larger battery.

That 47-horsepower gasoline engine never actually sends power directly to the Evora 414E Hybrid's wheels. Instead - as with other cars such as the 2011 Chevrolet Volt and the Fisker Karma - the mill is used to recharge the onboard 17 kilowatt-hour lithium polymer battery pack, which is centrally mounted down the middle of the car for optimal weight distribution. That battery pack can provide up to 35 miles of gasoline-free driving per full charge.

Because each rear wheel has a separate connection to its own electric motor, Lotus has programmed in torque vectoring for stability control of the vehicle. This means that a complex set of software algorithms can provide the same kind of benefits as rear-wheel steering and exaggerated toe-in without the expense or efficiency losses of a mechanical system. Each rear wheel puts down 204 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

Further, though the actual transmission has only one forward ratio, Lotus has programmed in seven artificial "gears" that the driver can row through via a set of column-mounted paddle shifters. Also included is the HALOsonic Internal and External Electronic Sound Synthesis technologies from Lotus and Harman International that pipes artificial sound to both the cabin and outside to pedestrians. Want more? There's plenty to be gleaned in the exhaustive press release that you'll find after the break. Sadly, just one lone copper-topped teaser image, which you can enlarge by clicking above.

The time has come for luxury mag Robb Report to issue its latest Car of the Year. Being that the end of 2009 also marks the end of a tidy little decade, the editors at the magazine took the opportunity to bestow one important car with the title Car of the Decade - the first time in the 17 years that Robb Report has been handing out automotive awards that it's granted two in one year. So, who won?

First up is the Car of the Year, which goes out to the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. In taking the award, the SLS AMG beat out 11 other worthy contenders to the throne. Certainly not a terrible choice by any means, though this particular blogger has yet to find himself lodged behind the Gullwing's leather-wrapped steering wheel. Moving on, then.

Robb Report's Car of the Decade trophy has been awarded to the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport. A good choice? Click here to read Autoblog's take on what it's like to pilot a $2,000,000 drop-top cruise missile. Yeah, as good a choice as any, we'd say. Click past the break to read more commentary from the magazine and click here to visit the new RobbReport.tv, where you'll see a series of videos recorded during the crew's testing in Napa Valley.

Is the world ready for a kinder, gentler Sport Utility Vehicle? Land Rover is betting on it, and the rugged British off-road brand will reportedly debut its hotly anticipated LRX at the Paris Motor Show later this year. Shortly thereafter, the production LRX will make its North American debut in LA. According to Automotive News, the LRX will go on sale in the third quarter of 2011.

We first saw the LRX Concept at the 2008 edition of the Detroit Auto Show, where it was generally well received by both the press and the showgoing public. The LRX is expected to be Land Rover's most efficient model and is likely to be offered with some sort of hybrid powertrain.

Late last year, Autocar reported that Land Rover's first hybrid drivetrain would include a 3.0-liter diesel V6 engine mated up to a 25kW electric motor. The system would be a full parallel hybrid, meaning it could operate on any combination of gasoline or electricity using its onboard lithium ion battery pack.
