We'll be honest and say right off the bat that we have a soft spot for KTM. This particular blogger's first real two-wheeler was an old KTM 125 two-stroke that ate piston rings for breakfast, lunch and dinner... but boy was it fast! More recently, the traditionally off-road-focused Austrian marque has made a renewed focus on entering the U.S. market with an exciting line of streetbikes, and that's reportedly set to continue in full force for 2010.

According to the boys at Hell For Leather, KTM plans to bring its entire line of motorcycles Stateside, and that includes the 990 Adventure R, Super Duke R, SMT and SMR along with the RC8 R superbike (finally!) and the full line of single-cylinder 690s. Speaking of which, also new for 2010 is the 2010 690 Duke R that gets firmer suspenders, a bespoke paint scheme and carbon fiber fender and, most importantly, an enlarged engine with 70 horsepower and 51 lb-ft of torque. Hit the jump for a detailed PDF file that contains KTM's full line.

Gallery: 2010 KTM 690 Duke R

[Source: Hell For Leather]
Continue reading Orange Crush: KTM to Bring Entire Line of Streetbikes to US

Orange Crush: KTM to Bring Entire Line of Streetbikes to US originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 11 Nov 2009 00:02:00 EST.
BMW Concept 6 - Click above for high-res image gallery

BMW is known the world over for its excellent brand of inline-six cylinder powerplants. In most cases, those supremely smooth and powerful engines power the German company's cars and trucks. Apparently, that won't always be the case, though, as BMW has just revealed its new Concept 6 motorcycle at the EICMA Show in Milan.

As the name implies, the Concept 6 boasts an engine with six cylinders, and the best news is that the mill is destined for a new production model in the near future. Expect to see a replacement for the long-running LT series of touring bikes, bringing BMW more in line with the standard-setting Goldwing from Honda.

Looking at the actual concept itself, the chassis appears to be heavily based on the current production K-Series unit, and the powerplant is tilted at the same 55-degree angle as the current four-cylinder. Bodywork is suitable for concept duty, with a futuristic take on the old-school Cafe Racer look.

Power? BMW's being a bit coy at the moment, suggesting that it makes as much horsepower as the current 1.3-liter four (over 150, to be sure) and as much torque as any other motorcycle engine in production with a stout 96 lb-ft at 2,000 RPM. With a redline of nearly 9,000... you can imagine that there's plenty of power on tap. Check out our high-res photo gallery below and hit the jump for a video and the press release.

Gallery: BMW Concept 6

[Source: BMW]
Continue reading BMW Surprises With Six-Cylinder Concept 6 Motorcycle

BMW Surprises With Six-Cylinder Concept 6 Motorcycle originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 10 Nov 2009 22:01:00 EST.
2010 MV Agusta F4 - Click above for high-res image gallery

Here it is. Motorcycle fans the world over have been waiting for the release of the 2010 F4 superbike ever since the new Brutale was unveiled last month, but MV Agusta somehow managed to keep a lid mostly on its range-topper until its official unveiling, which is taking place... oh, right about now. In any case, the Italian manufacturer starts its introduction of the new F4 by asking a question: Can perfection be improved upon?

It's always a dicey proposition to make sweeping changes to a highly-regarded superbike - just ask Ducati, which found that truth out the hard way with the 2003 999 - so it's not particularly surprising that the new bike is instantly recognizable as an F4, though the entire engine and chassis have been completely redesigned for more performance. Overall weight is down by 22 pounds, and the radial-valve, inline-four engine puts out 186 horsepower, a 12-horse gain over the 2009 model.

A Marelli 7BM ECU controls (among other things) the eight fuel injectors, variable-length intake manifolds and traction control, and it also offers multiple Sport and Rain engine control maps. Spent exhaust gases exit via the four expected underseat outlets, but those "organ pipes" are now squared-off instead of round. Suspension bits include a fully adjustable inverted 50mm Marzocchi up front and a remote reservoir rear shock from Sachs. Naturally, Brembo monobloc calipers clamp down on dual 320mm front discs, which are joined by a single Nissan four-piston caliper and 220mm disc out back.

All in all, this appears to be a pretty thorough redesign that will simultaneously offer diehard MV fans something to drool over while being competitive in the hotly-contested superbike marketplace. Want to know more? Click past the break for the full press release and technical specifications and see our high-res image gallery below.

Gallery: 2010 MV Agusta F4

[Source: MV Agusta]

Italwin Ducati City Pearl - Click above for high-res image gallery

Question: When is a Ducati not really a Ducati? Answer: When it's an electrically-assisted pedal bike made by the Italwing Group. The machine is known as the City Pearl, and it will be available in both men's and women's (with a dropped top tube) styles when it goes on sale in January at selected Ducati dealerships in Europe.

There is a precedent set for a pedal-powered Ducati. The famed Italian marque's first two-wheeler was known as the Cucciolo, which was really just a small four-stroke engine that attached to a bicycle frame. Still, we do wish that there was a bit more of a direct connection between Ducati and the City Pearl - as it stands it seems Italwin is merely trying to capitalize on the Ducati name.

In any case, the specifications for the City Pearl are right in line with other comparable electric bicycles. Power comes from a six-volt 9Ah Panasonic lithium ion battery pack and motivation comes from a front-mounted 250W brushless electric motor that's capable of propelling the bike to 24 kilometers per hour (about 15 mph). A seven-speed Nexus hub from Shimano sends human power to the rear wheel. See both versions in our image gallery below.

Gallery: Italwin Ducati City Pearl

[Source: Ducati]
Continue reading Electrifying Performance: First Electric Ducati to Hit the Show Floor in Milan?

Electrifying Performance: First Electric Ducati to Hit the Show Floor in Milan? originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 10 Nov 2009 18:01:00 EST.
2010 Ducati Multistrada 1200 - Click above for high-res image gallery

After months of rumors, grainy spy shots and leaked information, Ducati has finally pulled the wraps off the 2010 Multistrada 1200. As with the original MTS, Ducati wanted to create a machine with sportbike-level performance that could be attained on nearly any kind of surface terrain. This time, though, the Italian manufacturer started with its latest liquid-cooled Testastretta powerplant as used in the top-level 1198 superbike, though altered with revised valve overlap for smoother power delivery and a 15-percent improvement in fuel consumption and emissions.

Ducati says the new Multistrada 1200 is "four bikes in one," and has thus bestowed its new motorcycle with four distinct Riding Modes that alter power and traction control levels: Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro. Sport mode offers the full 150-horsepower experience with a low amount of traction control and Touring mode is reportedly intended for everyday riding. Urban and Enduro modes tone things down several notches to 100 horsepower and opting for the latter also raises the suspension and sets the traction control to its least-active setting.

Up-level S models get a new Ducati Electronic Suspension setup that can be tailored to adjust spring pre-load along with rebound and compression damping with options for rider only, rider with luggage, rider and passenger or rider and passenger with luggage. Ducati says that the Multistrada 1200's 417-pound dry weight is the lowest in its class, though a full 5.3-gallon load of fuel (enough for 186 miles between fill-ups) would certainly raise that a bit. Pricing starts at $14,995 before any options are added. Hit the jump for the rest of the details and check out our high-res image gallery below.

Gallery: 2010 Ducati Multistrada 1200

[Source: Ducati]
Continue reading Ducati Finally Unveils 2010 Multistrada 1200 at EICMA in Milan

Ducati Finally Unveils 2010 Multistrada 1200 at EICMA in Milan originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 10 Nov 2009 08:01:00 EST.
2010 Ducati Hypermotard 1100 EVO - Click above for high-res image gallery

Following the release of the $9,995 Hypermotard 796, it was pretty obvious that Ducati would have some updating to do on its bigger 1100cc brother. After all, with a power-to-weight ratio that was within spitting distance, it seemed kinda tough to justify the price increase to the bigger model. Not surprisingly, then, Ducati has just released all the details on the 2010 Hypermotard 1100, and it's got all the right boxes checked: 15-pounds lighter, five more horsepower and an $11,995 starting price.

The new base 1100 is now called the EVO, and it weighs 379 pounds dry and puts out 95 horsepower and 76 lb-ft of torque. New vacuum-cast engine cases join a magnesium alternator cover, a superbike-spec flywheel from the 848 and rare-earth magnets in the generator assembly help the latest Desmodue engine drop 11.5 pounds. Like the smaller 796, the new EVO eschews the previously-forged chassis bits for lighter pieces without sacrificing performance.

Also new for 2010 is an uprated 1100 EVO SP model for $14,995 that has higher ground clearance, upgraded suspension bits, Brembo Monobloc brake calipers, Marchesini wheels and a few external carbon fiber bits. Want to know more? All the sordid details can be found in the press release after the break and we've added a high-res image gallery for your viewing pleasure below.

Gallery: 2010 Ducati Hypermotard 1100 EVO and SP

[Source: Ducati]
Continue reading Ducati Updates Hypermotard 1100, Adds New EVO and SP Models

Ducati Updates Hypermotard 1100, Adds New EVO and SP Models originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 21:01:00 EST.
2010 BMW R 1200 RT - Click above for high-res image gallery

These days, BMW's most popular line of motorcycles all over the world are its adventurous GS machines, but the Bavarian manufacturer is also well known for its excellent long-distance touring mounts with its traditional boxer engines. BMW looks to uphold that reputation with a thorough update to its 2010 R 1200 RT, and it joins its GS sibling in getting new heads with dual-overhead cams.

Though the maximum power output of 110 horsepower is carried over from the 2009 model, BMW says that torque is boosted a few lb-ft to 88 and that both the horsepower and torque curves are greatly improved. A revised fairing joins a slightly enlarged windscreen that is reportedly more transparent than before as the notable exterior modifications.

The final major update is made to the suspension, which is blessed with the latest versions of BMW's Integral ABS brakes and Electronic Suspension Adjustment. Nine different combinations are available to the rider that adjust front and rear damping along with spring pretension and spring rate up front. Want all the details? Click past the break for the official press release.

Gallery: 2010 BMW R 1200 RT

[Source: BMW]
Continue reading BMW Updates 2010 R 1200 RT With DOHC Engine, Revised Fairing and ESA II

BMW Updates 2010 R 1200 RT With DOHC Engine, Revised Fairing and ESA II originally appeared on Luxist on Sun, 08 Nov 2009 18:01:00 EST.

Ever wonder what it is that sparks the mind of an entrepreneur? After all, lots of people have big imaginations and great ideas, but only a relatively small number of them actually follow through, create a company and design a product. Of course, we can add Henrik Fisker to that list of entrepreneurs, and we're definitely looking forward to seeing what else springs from his fertile mind.

So, back to the original question. In the case of Henrik Fisker, the inspiration for the Karma extended-range electric car came from none other than Leonardo DiCaprio. Actually, the actor's Prius hybrid, to be specific. Says Fisker:

A couple of years ago it started, by people who were maybe a little ahead of their time. You saw some movie starts like Leonardo DiCaprio buying a Prius... He could have bought any car in the world, and I remember seeing that on television and thinking to myself, you know, when you've got a guy who could buy any Ferrari or Rolls Royce and he's buying a Prius, you know something is changing dramatically.

Triumph Bonneville Heuer - Click above for high-res image gallery

Triumph and TAG Heuer have joined forces to create a one-of-a-kind Bonneville Heuer motorcycle. Inspired by Steve McQueen and the Porsche 917k that the famous actor, racecar driver and motorcycle rider piloted in the classic film Le Mans, the Bonneville Heuer is painted up in the classic Gulf Oil blue and orange scheme and will be used for promotional purposes.

McQueen famously wore a Heuer Monaco watch in the aforementioned race film and was a renowned Triumph enthusiast. Says Neil Morley, Triumph's Head of Brand Communications:

We are delighted to play our part in this exciting project. The Triumph Bonneville and TAG Heuer Monaco are both timeless masterpieces, celebrating their respective 50th and 40th anniversaries this year. We also both have a natural connection with Steve McQueen, who famously wore a Monaco watch in the film Le Mans and was renowned for his love of our bikes, making this a very natural collaboration.

As much as we'd like to tell you this will be an optional color choice for the production Bonneville, that's not currently the case.

2010 BMW R 1200 GS - Click above for high-res image gallery

Anyone who follows motorcycling would likely tell you that BMW's R 1200 GS sets the standard when it comes to building a proper adventure touring motorcycle, and with good reason. As I found out when I last threw a leg over the 2009 edition, BMW's big air-cooled mule can pretty much go anywhere its rider points it, and it'll tackle gnarly off-road conditions with just as much aplomb as it attacks paved back roads and long stretches of superslab.

Still, nothing is perfect (I actually prefer the little brother F 800 GS off the road), and BMW saw fit to update its best-seller for the 2010 model year with a revised boxer engine that now sports dual-overhead cams. That's a major modification and it allowed BMW to locate five-percent more horsepower than the previous mill. Those 110 galloping ponies join 88 lb-ft of torque that BMW says is spread more evenly throughout the rev range than before. We'll take it, more power is always a good thing, right?

As you'd expect, there's also an upgraded R 1200 GS Adventure model for those who truly need the most capable bike they can get their grubby mitts on. Updates over the standard model include spoked wheels in lieu of cast, more suspension travel and a monster 8.7-gallon fuel tank. See both new models in all their glory in our image galleries below.

Gallery: 2010 BMW R 1200 GS

Gallery: 2010 BMW R 1200 GS Adventure

[Source: BMW]

BMW Unleashes 2010 R 1200 GS with DOHC Boxer Engine originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 06 Nov 2009 08:02:00 EST.

Shortly after showing off its new 2010 Brutale naked streetfighter, iconic Italian motorcycle manufacturer MV Agusta will unveil its range-topping F4 sportbike at the EICMA motorcycle show. MV let loose one teaser image early last month, but details are just now starting to leak out about the 998cc inline-four screamer.

According to OmniMoto in Italy, MV Agusta has massaged its well-known powerplant with twin fuel injectors per cylinder and variable throttle bodies to put out 186 horsepower (still short of the class-leading 193-horsepower BMW S 1000 RR) at 12,900 RPM. Also on the menu are a slipper clutch and eight-way adjustable traction control.

We don't expect major chages to the bike's already attractive overall design, but a new bi-xenon take on the vertical headlight will join a longer and lighter single-sided swingarm to update things a bit. In any case, we'll get all the details soon enough when the F4 makes its official debut next week in Milan.

[Source: OmniMoto via Asphalt and Rubber]

MV Agusta Teases New F4, Details Leak Out Ahead of EICMA originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 03 Nov 2009 05:03:00 EST. Now might be a good time to visit your local Harley Davidson dealership. Not necessarily for a new motorcycle wearing the classic orange and black Bar and Shield logo - not that there's anything wrong with that, if that's your thing - but for one of the last bikes from the recently discontinued Buell brand.

According to a report from the boys from Hell for Leather, Harley Davidson is sending a check to each dealership worth $5,000 for every new Buell sold. This knowledge ought to give customers a little extra negotiating power when it comes time to sign on the dotted line, no?

2003 Jaguar R-D6 Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

The on-again, off-again five-door "coupe" from Jaguar is reportedly, well, on again. According to AutoWeek, the British-born and Indian-owned automaker plans to release the sporty hatchback in 2014 with an estimated price of around $60,000. Jaguar first dipped a toe in the five-door coupe waters back in 2003 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, though the R-D6 concept was quickly forgotten after its initial round of the show circuit.

Now, an unnamed source at Jaguar tells AW, "There's a growing feeling with the R-D6 that we really had something very innovative, fresh and different. Maybe we missed something back then, but the idea is even more applicable now." Might that newfound interest have anything to do with the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo and Audi Sportback models?

The new car would be one size smaller than the current XF and would share its aluminum chassis architecture with the next XK and planned XE sportscars. After the five-door hits the market, there's a reasonable chance a sportier three-door could shortly follow. Power will reportedly come from a new line of V6 engines that will feature forced injection and share ancestry with Jag's latest 5.0-liter V8 engine.

Gallery: 2003 Jaguar R-D6 Concept

[Source: AutoWeek]

Jaguar Reportedly Hatching R-D6-Based Sports Fastback for 2014 originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 28 Oct 2009 21:01:00 EST.
As much as we appreciate the style of vintage Vespa scooters, there's no debate that the old Italian air-cooled, two-stroke, single cylinder engines are extremely damaging to the air we breathe. Even though it's environmentally responsible, it still seems like such a shame to let all those pretty Italian scooters go to waste, which is one reason why we like electric scooter conversions like this one.

Another option for older scooters, especially ones that have no real shot at becoming roadworthy again, is to turn them into office furniture, as seen above. Not interested in doing the work yourself? We don't blame you. Fortunately, there's at least one company that will do the job for you.

Design studio Bel & Bel is now turning out these Vespa chairs that convert the leg shields from older Vespas into fashionable and usable art. From the looks of it, color choices for both the external structure and the actual seating surfaces abound, so there shouldn't be any problem coordinating the tone for your specific office.

Gallery: Vespa Chair by Bel & Bel

[Source: Bel & Bel via Motorcycle.com]

Stylish Recycling: Vespa Chair by Bel & Bel originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 27 Oct 2009 15:01:00 EST.
BMW is known for offering premium automobiles and motorcycles here in the United States, so it comes as little surprise that the German automaker would plan to produce premium electric vehicles as well. According to British motoring magazine Autocar, those electric vehicles, which are currently being developed under BMW's Project i initiative, will be available with two-, three- and four-wheeled platforms.

Marc Gerard, head of interior design at BMW, explains that the automaker has yet to decide whether these Project i vehicles will "fit below Mini, between Mini and BMW or above BMW." Another issue that needs to be sorted out is whether the electric machines will break new styling ground or if the automaker will instead choose a more conservative path so as not to alienate any potential buyers.

Gallery: BMW Vision EfficientDynamics

[Source: Autocar]

REPORT: BMW to Focus on Premium, Upmarket Electric Vehicles originally appeared on Luxist on Sun, 25 Oct 2009 21:03:00 EST.

We didn't believe it until we verified it with our own eyes - and amazingly it's true: Colorado is offering a $42,083 rebate on the 2009 Tesla Roadster until December 31st. Carry the one, move the decimal point... yep, that's a 38-percent discount on what must be the most desirable electric car currently for sale in the United States.

So, exactly how did this come about? Is the thin air up there distorting people's better judgment? Not exactly. The incentive actually applies to a slew of qualifying hybrid and electric vehicles and will be paid in the form of an income tax credit that's calculated by determining the difference in price of the alt-fuel car or truck as compared to a competitive gas-powered model. In the case of the Tesla Roadster, Colorado figures the EV costs a whopping $50K more than its competitive set... which we imagine might be the Lotus Elise.

Want to take advantage of the rebate but not interested in a fully-electric sportscar? Buyers can also get a $20K rebate on the 2009 Lexus LS 600h L or about three grand on either the new Honda Insight or Toyota Prius. See the complete list in PDF form here.

[Source: Green Car Reports]

World's Largest Rebate?
Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Performance Package Plus - Click above for high-res image gallery

Question: What's hotter than a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG? Well, that would be the new C63 AMG with Performance Package Plus, of course. The new super sedan from Daimler gets a 30-horsepower injection over the standard AMG model, pushing the pony count all the way to 487 - just a baker's dozen shy of the race-spec C-Class DTM model. Watch out, Caddy.

Modifications to the 6.3-liter V8 engine include new forged alloy pistons borrowed from the SLS AMG supercar and a new set of crank rods coupled with a lightweight crankshaft. A titanium-colored intake manifold and recalibrated computer module complete the package. Performance? How about zero to 62 in just 4.4 seconds and naught to 125 in under 14? Yeah, that'll do nicely.

An upgraded brake package with composite rotors is included to help the driver reign in all that speed, and Mercedes says the new PPP will be available on both the sedan and - get this - wagon bodystyles. Exterior modifications are limited to a carbon fiber spoiler for the sedan, and the interior is upgraded with an AMG steering wheel in nappa leather and seats swathed in Alcantara. No word yet on whether this beast is headed Stateside, but sales are scheduled to start in Europe before the end of the year. Hit the jump for the official press release and check out the two high-res images in our gallery below.

Gallery: Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Performance Package Plus

[Source: Mercedes-Benz]

Mercedes-Benz Releases SLS-Inspired C63 AMG originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 11:01:00 EST.

Ah, yes. Automotive stereotypes... always good for a laugh or two, right? For instance, just who do you expect to see exiting the driver's seat of a late-seventies Chevy Camaro Z/28? Mullet city, of course. And what of the blacked-out Cadillac Escalade rolling on two-sizes-too-large wheels and tires? A professional athlete or someone who wishes they were. Finally, who's that behind the wheel of the second-gen Toyota Prius with the anti-Hummer bumper sticker? Tree hugger, naturally.

So, these are all pretty obvious examples of automotive stereotypes, and they certainly don't always apply (there's nothing wrong with saving gas with a hybrid, we say). What about the less conspicuous vehicular choices? San Diego-based market research outfit Strategic Vision (via Forbes) has just released its New Vehicle Experience Study... and to be honest the results aren't terribly surprising.

Lexus owners are wealthy and well educated. Could have guess that one. The average Bentley owner has $5 million in investable assets and prefers understated luxury while Rolls Royce drivers range from rappers to royalty. Click here to read the rest of the story.

[Source: Forbes]

What Does Your New Car Say About You? Forbes Investigates originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 07:01:00 EST.

Harley-Davidson has just announced its third-quarter results, and things aren't quite as bad as they could have been... but we'll get to that in a moment. The big bombshell is that the Buell brand will be discontinued and the American motorcycle manufacturer will sell off its share in MV Agusta.

Head on over to Buell's official website to watch a video of an obviously emotional Erik Buell, who explains that HD will continue to honor the full factory warranty on Buell motorcycles and thanks his dealership body and loyal customers for their support for over 20 years of producing offbeat American sportbikes. Roughly 180 jobs will be lost from the Buell organization. HD will immediately begin the work of selling its recently-acquired stake in MV Agusta.

So, back to Harley's third-quarter performance. Revenue from motorcycle sales came to $803.3 million, down 22.1 percent compared to the the third quarter of '08. A total of 54,236 Harley-Davidson motorcycles were shipped worldwide, down 27.4 percent. Another $300 or so million was made off apparel and merchandise sales. Full details can be found in the ridiculously long press release after the break.

Goodbye Buell, we'll miss you.
Continue reading Harley-Davidson Drops Buell, Will Sell Stake in MV Agusta

Harley-Davidson Drops Buell, Will Sell Stake in MV Agusta originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 04:01:00 EST.
According to Wired, a trend is emerging from the design studios of some of the world's top automakers, and it may be spreading like wildfire as you read this. We're talking about cars like the recently-unveiled BMW X6, Honda Crosstour and Audi A5 Sportback. Squint a bit and its not too hard to look at the overall shape of these three cars and see the outline of the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight.

Of course, there's a big difference between the three aforementioned crossover/wagon thingies and hybrids like the Prius and Insight. While the big wagons are shaped to attract the attention of higher-end luxury buyers, the Prius and the Insight - itself accused of copying the shape of its rival from Toyota on numerous occasions - were styled in the wind tunnel to promote good fuel efficiency at highway speeds.

Regardless of the reason behind their being and whether or not you find them ugly or beautiful, it would seem that we should start getting ourselves accustomed to the sloping rear hatchback look - its now officially a trend.

Gallery: BMW X6 ActiveHybrid

[Source: Wired]

BMW X6 and Honda Crosstour: The Efficient Shape of Things to Come? originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 15 Oct 2009 07:03:00 EST.
Rumors of a possible motorcycle brand for Volkswagen aren't anything new. It's a well-known fact that Ferdinand Piech, Chairman of Volkswagen's Board, wishes that the German automaker had purchased Ducati back in 1985 when the Italian bike manufacturer was in dire financial shape.

As recently as last year, Piech - himself a Ducati rider even at age 72 - commented that Volkswagen could still purchase an unnamed motorcycle manufacturer if the conditions were right. Strike up the rumormill again, boys and girls. The Italian motoring press is reportedly signaling that Volkswagen is making renewed overtures toward Ducati, which, like pretty much all other motorcycle manufacturers these days, is seeing sales and profits take a dive due to the sorry state of the global economy.

Just a few weeks back at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Piech indicated that the Volkswagen Group was looking to expand, and some took that to mean it would procure a sizable stake in Suziki, another long-rumored target of the German automaker. KTM has also been bandied about as a potential partner. So, is there any truth to the two-wheeled VW rumors? We'll see how it all pans out soon enough, but we're not exactly holding our breath.

Gallery: Ducati 848 Nicky Hayden Special Edition

[Source: Clutch and Chrome]

Volkswagen Reportedly Still Interested in Ducati originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 15 Oct 2009 02:02:00 EST.

2010 Honda VFR 1200F - Click above for high-res image gallery

Finally, after what seems like years of rumor, innuendo, spy shots and speculation, Honda has unleashed the goods on its new 2010 VFR 1200F. And, it's pretty much as we've been expecting. Buried beneath the dual-pane bodywork and vacuum-molded cast aluminum chassis lies a 1,237 cc V4 engine that reportedly puts out 172 hp at 10,000 rpm and 95 lb-ft of torque at a high 8,750 rpm.

Up front sits a 43-millimeter upside-down fork that's adjustable for preload; at the rear is a single shock with Honda's Pro-Link system that's also adjustable for preload in 25 positions. With a claimed weight of nearly 600 pounds, the new VFR is certainly no lightweight, and the highly anticipated dual-clutch gearbox and cylinder deactivation technologies appear to be additional-cost options.

On the positive side, we like the fact that the bike has its own unique look, and the single-sided swingarm sports a shaft drive. Expect the while kit-n-kaboodle to be released at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, hopefully including the bike's retail price and official sale date.

Gallery: 2010 Honda VFR 1200F

Honda Unleashes the Goods on 2010 VFR 1200F originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 08 Oct 2009 22:02:00 EST.

Surprise! Lexus and its parent company, Toyota, are apparently finding that it's not as easy selling $106,000 hybrids as it is for $25,000. The Lexus LS 600h L is certainly an excellent piece of automotive engineering, delivering gobs of horsepower and torque with at least a modicum of efficiency thrown in for good measure.

Still, sales of the LS range are down over 50 percent, leading the the Japanese auto giant to place a whopping $10,000 cash incentive on its range-topping hybrid model. Moving down the Lexus lineup a notch will net you a $3,000 incentive on the GS 450h. What's more, the company is throwing another $1,000 at any sales associate that manages to sell one of its pricey hybrids.

Not into expensive hybrid sedans? How 'bout we move to the exact opposite end of the fuel-saving market and into the driver's seat of a 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid. Signing on the dotted line for GM's top-of-the-line hybrid 'ute will cost you from about $73,000 to over $87,000... minus a five-digit discount, of course. Such a deal!

[Source: Auto Observer]

Bargain Bin: High-Priced Hybrids Get Hefty Incentives originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 07 Oct 2009 01:01:00 EST.
While the environmental merits of any 621 horsepower, twelve-cylinder behemoth that's capable of traveling at speeds of up to 204 miles per hour are (to say the least) debatable, Bentley hasn't exactly been shy about touting the green angle of its upcoming 2010 Continental Supersports.

Add one more black mark to the car's eco credibility as word comes by way of Green Car Advisor that U.S. laws and "engineering challenges" that include the fitment of hardened valve seats in the W12 engine mean that the first 200 Supersports imported to the United States won't actually be flex-fuel capable.

Ah well, somehow we doubt that buyers willing to plunk down the $267,000 it takes to park a twin-turbocharged Continental Supersports in their driveway will be all that concerned with pumping ethanol in the tank.

Gallery: Bentley Continental Supersports Unveil

[Source: Green Car Advisor]

Bentley Reportedly Delays Flex-Fuel Capability for 2010 Continental Supersports originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 06 Oct 2009 06:01:00 EST. For sure, there are a number of Porschophiles who choose to forget the mid-engined sportscar that was built from 1969 through 1976, but the four-cylinder model was something of a sales success for the German automaker, handily outpacing the firm's range-topping 911 series throughout its model run. Might we see a return of the entry-level Porsche, once again with a little help from Volkswagen?

According to drive.com.au, the answer may very well be 'yes.' The Australian magazine quotes Wolfgang Duerheimer, head of development at Porsche, who has said that a model "significantly cheaper than" the Boxster is a top priority for the automaker. The new car would reportedly be produced in cooperation with Volkswagen, which recently assimilated Porsche into its giant European operations. Anyone else thinking BlueSport?

[Source: drive.com.au | Photo: Spurzem CC.2.0]

Porsche Reportedly Planning New Entry-Level Sportscar originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 05 Oct 2009 21:01:00 EST.
2010 Triumph Rocket III Roadster - Click above for high-res image gallery

Just in case the original Triumph Rocket III and its hulking 2.3-liter inline triple engine wasn't quite bonkers enough for you, the British motorcycle manufacturer has just announced it's upping the power of that awe-inspiring mill for the 2010 model year. The 165 lb-ft of torque represents a 15-percent improvement over the 2009 model, and that plateau is reached at just 2,750 rpm.

Couple that foundation-wrenching pulling power with 146 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and a reported 807-pound wet weight and you've got yourself a laudable power-to-weight ratio. Fortunately, Triumph has also seen fit to update the Rocket's suspension and brake components to match the newfound grunt. A new set of 43-millimeter upside-down forks join twin Kayaba shocks to keep the big bike under control and updated Brembo brakes are paired up with Triumph's proven ABS system.

On the styling side of the coin, Triumph will paint the new 2010 Rocket in any color you'd like... just so long as it's black. Hey, don't complain - you do get the choice of either glossy or matte finish, and don't forget about that engine! Rounding out the updates are twin chrome silencers and a reconfigured riding position with a shorter reach to the handlebars and slightly more rearset footpegs. We'll take ours in, um, black.

Gallery: 2010 Triumph Rocket III Roadster

[Source: Triumph]
Continue reading Triumph Updates 2010 Rocket III With Even More Power

Triumph Updates 2010 Rocket III With Even More Power originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 02 Oct 2009 07:01:00 EST.

2010 MV Agusta Brutale 1090RR - Click above for high-res image gallery

Updating an icon is always a risky proposition. It's hard to believe that it has been nearly a decade since the MV Agusta Brutale burst onto the scene, but a quick check confirms that the naked Italian was first introduced back in 2001. Doesn't matter, really, the bike has always been one of the most attractive motorcycles in existence and the design still looks fresh to our eyes.

Fortunately, then, MV Agusta didn't mess with a good thing for the Brutale's first major redesign. Though over 85 percent of the 2010 Brutale is new and is not interchangeable with the 2009 model, the casual observer would be hard pressed to point out the changes. Everything from the bodywork to the chromoly steel trellis frame to the iconic headlight has been updated, as has the four-cylinder powerplant, which is now available in either 998cc (139 hp and 78 lb-ft) or 1078cc sizes (144 hp and 85 lb-ft).

MV Agusta says that the bike's rider compartment has been altered to make the Brutale a bit more comfortable, and that's a change that will surely be appreciated by owners as the old model was almost impossibly compact. A longer swingarm that drops 2.2 pounds from the previous unit is said to improve the ride and handling, as will the gravity cast (990) or forged wheels (1090). Pricing seems rather reasonable at exactly $15,000 for the 990R and $18,000 for the 1090RR. Click past the break for a short press release along with a video showing both bikes in their natural elements.

Gallery: MV Agusta Brutale 990R

Gallery: MV Agusta Brutale 1090RR

Continue reading MV Agusta Updates Brutale for 2010

MV Agusta Updates Brutale for 2010 originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 01 Oct 2009 10:01:00 EST.

Production Land Rover LRX rendering - Click above to enlarge

Land Rover has today confirmed what we've long expected - that the popular LRX Concept from the 2008 edition of the Detroit Auto Show is headed for production. The British-born automaker doesn't actually say the new 'ute will be called the LRX when it hits the market in 2011, but it definitely will be wearing the Range Rover moniker and will therefore likely be marketed as a premium vehicle.

No details are given about the coupelike SUV's powertrain, but Land Rover does say the new vehicle "will be the smallest, lightest and most efficient vehicle the company has ever produced." Previous reports have suggested the production LRX will share underpinnings with the LR2 (a.k.a. the Freelander) and will be offered with an optional all-wheel drive hybrid powertrain that may use an electric motor to power the rear wheels and a transverse engine underhood driving the front wheels.

Judging from the lone rendering released with this announcement, the basic shape from the LRX Concept should survive mostly intact, perhaps gaining a slightly more pronounced front fascia to go along with the production-necessary external door handles. Expect more details to filter out at the beginning of 2010, but in the meantime, click past the break for the press release.
Continue reading Land Rover Confirms Small Range Rover for Production

Land Rover Confirms Small Range Rover for Production originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 25 Sep 2009 16:01:00 EST.
Ducati Hypermotard 796 - Click above for high-res image gallery

There's no doubt that the Ducati Hypermotard is one of the most talked about new motorcycles in recent memory, but at $14,995, it was priced out of many buyer's budgets. If you fit into that mold, we have some good news to share: Ducati has just officially announced the Hypermotard 796, and it carries a reasonable $9,995 asking price.

At this point, Ducati isn't saying much about the new engine that powers the Hypermotard 796, except that it's air-cooled, sports two valves per cylinder and puts out 81 horsepower and 56 lb-ft of torque. We've heard, though, that the new mill will displace around 800cc and is a development of the mill used in the Monster 696. Those power figures coupled with the new bike's low 368-pound (unverified at this point, naturally) package provide an attractive power-to-weight ratio.

Other features will include an APTC clutch and a single-sided swingarm along with redesigned top and bottom fork clamps and a revised steel trellis frame. Color options will include Ducati red and matte black in addition to the cool matte white scheme seen in our photo gallery below. Click past the break for the official press release.

Gallery: Ducati Hypermotard 796

Continue reading Ducati Announces Hypermotard 796, Prices it Below $10K

Ducati Announces Hypermotard 796, Prices it Below $10K originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 24 Sep 2009 06:01:00 EST.

Yes, an electric Rolls-Royce. And why not? The torque curve of an electric motor - making maximum pulling power right at zero RPM - would seem to suit the RR mission perfectly, as would the distinct lack of noise, vibration and harshness. Sounds like a match made in heaven, no?

Well, of course there are issues to overcome, not the least of which is sourcing a suitably large battery for the three-ton Phantom sedan. According to Auto Express in the U.K., that battery pack would feature lithium ion cells, which happens to be the same technology used by parent company BMW in its electric Mini E.

These rumors aren't exactly new - we last heard of an electric Roller about a year ago - but this time the addition of a possible range extender is mentioned for the first time. Such a configuration is featured in both the upcoming Chevy Volt and the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept BMW just showed off at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The unnamed spokesperson cited by Auto Express doesn't offer any sort of timetable as to when we might see an electric Phantom, but we're not exactly holding our breath.

[Source: Auto Express]

Luxury Goes Green: Electric Rolls-Royce Phantom Under Development originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 23 Sep 2009 07:00:00 EST.

Bugatti Galibier concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

After months of speculation, Bugatti has finally pulled the wraps off its new four-door supercar concept just ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show at an event for past customers and Bugatti-intenders. Up to this point, we've been referring to the French über-sedan as the Bordeaux, but it seems the actual car's moniker will be Galibier - the name of a difficult Alpine pass along the Tour de France.

Powering the Galibier concept will be a version of Bugatti's ridiculously powerful eight-liter W16 powerplant. Unlike the mill propelling the Veyron to ludicrous speed, this version is mounted up front and is capable of running on ethanol fuel, which may or may not allow the automaker to squeeze a few more ponies out of the engine... not that it needs it, of course. Plus, when swilling as much alcohol as the Galibier would be likely to ingest, it's hard to think of a car like this as eco-friendly.

One of the Galibier's most striking features is undoubtedly its two-tone outer shell, which is comprised of both polished aluminum for the doors and front fenders and a unique dark blue carbon fiber weave that shines through when illuminated. We also note a prominent center spine that recalls past Bugattis like the Type 35 and the classically beautiful Type 57.

Current reports peg the Galibier's top speed at 217 miles per hour (350 kilometers per hour), which, while slower than the Veyron's epic terminal velocity, is certainly nothing to sneeze at.
Looks like it'll be an all-out supercar showdown next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show. In addition to the McLaren MP4-12C and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG - not to mention the Ferrari 458 Italia - Lamborghini will reportedly be showing off the roadster version of its million-plus dollar Reventón.

Sporting the same stealth fighter-inspired angular bodywork as the standard Reventón that was unveiled two years ago at the same auto show, the new topless Lambo will reportedly make use of its all-wheel drive system to help the run to 60 in just 3.4 seconds. Top speed is expected to be well over 200 miles per hour, as you'd expect from an Italian supercar with a mid-mounted 650-horsepower V12 powerplant.

Stay tuned for live shots and official details as the festivities in Frankfurt draw ever closer, but in the meantime, be sure to check out our gallery of images below. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

[Source: WCF]

Lamborghini Reventón Roadster Images Leak Ahead of Frankfurt originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 10 Sep 2009 20:01:00 EST.
Mercedes-Benz S 500 Hybrid - Click above for high-res image gallery

According to World Car Fans, there's a new hybrid S-Class concept from Mercedes-Benz that's slated for its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week. Unlike the previously-announced mild hybrid version of the S 400, the new Vision S 500 will reportedly come equipped with a plug and will be capable of powering itself solely on electric power for considerable distances.

At the heart of the concept will be a lithium ion battery pack that will store 10 kWh of power, which we hear will allow for an electric-only range of over 18 miles (30 kilometers). That power storage unit will send its electrons to a 60-horsepower (44 kW) electric motor that's mated up to an unknown gasoline-fed V6. Together, the twin power sources will reportedly push the big Benz to 60 mph in under 5.5 seconds.

Naturally, fuel economy and emissions are of paramount concern with a machine such as this, and the S 500 PHEV won't disappoint. We're not sure what standard was used to come up with the 73.5 (3.2L per 100 km) mpg figure, but it appears to compare rather favorably with other competing luxury hybrids.

[Source: World Car Fans]

Mercedes-Benz to Unveil Vision S 500 Plug-in Hybrid Concept in Frankfurt originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 10 Sep 2009 06:05:00 EST.
2010 Lexus LS 600h L - Click above for high-res image gallery

By far, the biggest news from Lexus at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show will be the unveiling of the LF-Ch hybrid hatchback concept. That doesn't mean Toyota's luxury brand doesn't have more to bring to the show later this month, though, and among those vehicles will be updated versions of the LS and GS Hybrid sedans.

There aren't any major changes to either of these machines that we know of, so this is mostly just a styling refresh. Up front, both hybrids will get a new grille that closely mimics the pattern that was debuted on the HS 250h earlier this year. That means horizontal bars will take the lead with a large Lexus emblem surrounded in a faint blue hue.

Other changes will include new color options, side mirrors with integrated LED turn signals and updated audio and navigation systems inside. See both refreshed machines in our gallery below.

Gallery: Frankfurt Preview: Lexus LS and GS Hybrids

Lexus to Show Refreshed LS and GS Hybrid Sedans in Frankfurt originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 03 Sep 2009 18:01:00 EST. According to a message posted to Twitter from @Toyota, today is the day we all wish Lexus a Happy 20th Anniversary. Make a wish and blow out the candles - let's all party like its 1989!

It's hard to believe that 20 years have gone by since Toyota shocked the automotive world by unleashing the Lexus LS 400. That machine was born out of a project that began in 1983 to create a flagship automobile that could challenge the best the rest of the world had to offer. Needless to say, Toyota did just that when it launched the Lexus brand six years later, establishing itself as one of the "big three" luxury automakers in the U.S. Congrats Lexus! And here's to the next twenty.

Lexus Celebrates Twenty Years of Luxury Automobiles originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 01 Sep 2009 23:01:00 EST.
Tesla Model S in motion - Click above for high-res image gallery

Just a day after releasing new images of the Tesla Roadster Sport, the Silicon Valley automaker has gone and unleashed its Model S in a series of actual at-speed driving shots. While we've seen high-res shots of the Model S in the studio from Tesla Motors and we've witnessed the car moving under its own electric power ourselves, this is the first time the automaker has published a photo series of its own showing the car in motion.

Looking a bit closer, we can see that it is none other than Tesla design chief Franz Von Holzhausen behind the wheel of the Model S in these images. Lucky guy. Unfortunately, drivers who didn't help design the Model S but want to pilot the car will need to wait until Q3 of 2011 for the chance.

Gallery: Tesla Model S Driving Shots

[Source: Tesla via egmCarTech]

Tesla Unloads New Set of Model S Driving Shots originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 20 Aug 2009 19:01:00 EST.
Tesla Roadster Sport - Click above for high-res image gallery

It's been seven months since Tesla first announced its intentions to build the Roadster Sport, a higher performing version of its standard electric sportscar, and the Silicon Valley-based automaker has finally offered up some real high-res images of the EV along with a bevy of details on what makes the Sport extra special.

First and foremost, the Sport's hand-wound electric motor adds a bit more oomph to the already quick Roadster, taking off two-tenths of a second on the rush to 60 at 3.7 seconds. Also included are bare carbon fiber hood louvers and rear spoiler, a push-button transmission selector to replace the aluminum shift knob and a central touch screen that displays estimated range along with the total number of oil barrels saved over a fossil-fueled automobile. That last tidbit is worth the $20K price increase itself, as far as we're concerned.

Gallery: Tesla Roadster Sport

[Source: Tesla via World Car Fans]

Tesla Finally Shows Off Real Images of Roadster Sport originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 20 Aug 2009 15:02:00 EST.
BMW ActiveHybrid X6 - Click above for high-res image gallery

High performance hybrid - an oxymoron? Not according to BMW, as the upcoming BMW X6 ActiveHybrid will be the most powerful hybrid in history with its 480 peak horsepower and diesel-like plateau of 575 lb-ft of torque. That's one muscular hybrid.

That impressive powertrain consists of twin electric motors (delivering 91 hp and 86 hp, respectively) and a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine. All those horses will be corralled through a seven-speed dual-mode transmission and BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The run to sixty will take just 5.4 seconds and the top speed will be limited to 130 miles per hour.

The EPA has yet to test the vehicle, but the German automaker is estimating its X6 Hybrid will return a 20-percent fuel mileage improvement on average over the standard twin-turbo X6. That should mean about 18 miles per gallon combined here in the States. The official public debut is scheduled for the Frankfurt Motor Show in September and the sale date is slated for four-quarter 2009. Click past the break for the almost comically-detailed press release.

Gallery: BMW X6 ActiveHybrid

[Source: BMW]
Continue reading BMW X6 Hybrid To Be World's Most Powerful Gas-Electric Vehicle

BMW X6 Hybrid To Be World's Most Powerful Gas-Electric Vehicle originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 14 Aug 2009 14:01:00 EST.
Cook Custom Choppers Rambler - Click above for high-res image gallery

Considering America's well-known love affair with custom motorcycles, you might think that the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building would be dominated by U.S.-based builders. Interestingly, though, this year marks the first time the top prize has been won by an American, in this case Dave Cook of Cook Custom Choppers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The winning bike is called Rambler, and it's definitely not the typical custom Harley. In fact, it's not even powered by a V-twin engine. Instead, an air-cooled 550cc four-cylinder engine from International sends power through a modified BMW gearbox and shaft drive to the 21-inch rear wheel. See for yourself in our gallery below.

Second place went to another non-Harley-based custom built by Kris Krome Customs of Freeland, Michigan. Called the Re-flex-tion, the machine is powered by the mill from a Triumph T120. Bronze went to Krugger Speedshop from Belgium for its S&S-powered Overmile. Hit the jump for the official press release and click here for a complete rundown of winners.

[Source: AMD Championship]
Continue reading Cook Custom Choppers Wins AMD World Championship of Bike Building

Cook Custom Choppers Wins AMD World Championship of Bike Building originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 13 Aug 2009 15:01:00 EST.
BMW 760Li High Security - Click above for high-res image gallery

BMW has just announced two new versions of its range-topping 7 Series sedan that promise to offer more safety to their occupants than anything this side of an armored truck. Available in both 750Li and V12-powered 760Li guises, the new 7 Series High Security comes equipped with thick steel doors, roof, pillars, front footwell and separation wall between passenger and luggage compartments along with fully glazed and bulletproof glass.

As befitting a BMW, the 7 Series High Security has plenty of power to move its prodigious mass. The 750Li High Security can scoot to sixty miles per hour in under eight seconds while its bigger brother can do that deed in just over six. Further, since these models were developed alongside the regular-grade 7 Series, the platform was built to handle the additional weight from the start. As such, BMW claims its High Security sedans retain the brand's sporty driving dynamics.

Still not feeling safe? You can always check the option for the dual machine gun compartment in the center console. Check out our gallery below and see the official press release after the break.

Gallery: BMW 7 Series High Security

[Source: BMW]
Continue reading BMW Launches 7 Series High Security

BMW Launches 7 Series High Security originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 20:02:00 EST.
