I have always used the occasional left over Belgian brew to wash my hair with the next morning (try it out, it leavesyour hair silky and clean), but I don't know why it never struck me to bathe in beer. Over the past 10 years, beer spas have popped up in Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic. At these beer spas, every sense is enveloped inbeer; the bubbly sticky liquid on your skin, the hops in the air, to the beer in your mug. You can also try the brewskifacial: an über gooey face mask made from ground hops, malt, honey and cream cheese. These half hour bathtreatments start at about $55.
Filed under: Services, Spas, Spirits, Cosmetics and Fragrance

Beer Spas originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 01 May 2006 14:05:00 EST. In this old apothecary shapedbottle you will find a gin infused with Bulgarian Rose, coriander, and cucumbers. Unlike most English made gins,Hendrick's is small batch distilled in Ayrshire, Scotland. The lowland Scottish water provides the perfect medium forthe grain spirit and the unusual array of botanicals.
I can unhesitatingly say this is absolutely the best gin Ihave ever had. Feathery, crisp, and a clear essence of cucumber. With it I have made an absolutelyprestigious gin martini and gin and tonic.

Hendrick's Gin originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 18 Apr 2006 16:02:00 EST.
Yours truly attended last night's auctionof the Glenfiddich Rare Collection 1937 that we mentioned earlier. A bottleof the world's oldest whisky was auctioned off for the first time at the hammer price of $20,000. It was a prettyintense auction with prices going back and forth, and a pretty feisty auctioneer (be sure to check back in a few days,as I will be posting a video of the auction).

I was fortunate enough to speak with some of the folks atGlenfiddich, and they uncorked the original cask from 1937 and allowed me to literally stick my nose in it. The bouquetof smells were amazing! The interesting thing is that when this cask left Scotland it was dry, and after being in the USfor a few days, the difference of climate caused the whiskey to be released from the wood, creating a new puddle ofwhiskey.

Because it was once smoked by Winston Churchill of course. The former PrimeMinster of the United Kingdom was about to give a speech in a ballroom where he was asked to extinguish his half burntcigar. Churchill snubbed it on the ground and handed it to the constable standing next to him. This once souvenir tothe constable is now being sold by his relatives. The half ashed cigar will be going up for sale in April, butthe amount is unknown as this is such an unusual auction.

Half Smoked Cigar for Auction originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 24 Mar 2006 15:05:00 EST. Not refinedas the earlier mentioned Peat Monster, but still very pleasant on the tongue. Grainy, with dry fruit tastes and thefinish reminds me of the pepperness of a strong black coffee. Pretty drinkable. Asyla is a 50/50 blend of grain andmalt whiskies mostly from Cragganmore, Linkwood, Glen Elgin, Cabus, and Cameron Bridge.

A Personal Taste Of Compass Box: Asyla originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 20 Mar 2006 12:34:00 EST. I have a personal infatuation for peatywhiskies and this truly hits the spot. The smokiness was so dynamic that it reminded me of a char cooked porterhouse onan open campfire. It coats the tongue quite copiously like a fine oil. Malty, sweet, and almost smokes off thetongue. It went well with the Spanish blue cheese I was having at the time. The Peat Monster is comprised of vatted100% single malt whisky mainly made of Caol Ila and Ardmore, all aged between 10 and 15 years old.

A Personal Taste Of Compass Box: The Peat Monster originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 20 Mar 2006 12:06:00 EST. Only 20 will be for sale in the UK, which makes me feel pretty special here in the US where we will get100 at about $6,000 each. The whisky is presented in a leather and silk box, with a crystal stopper and a leather-boundcollectors guide with The Macallan's Easter Elchies House Stamp of approval. The burnish gold-colored malt is richwith flavors of cardamom, black cherries, and chocolate.

Quarter Century Macallan in Lalique originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 28 Feb 2006 15:01:00 EST. A vatting of 10 casks from a single day's distillation ofAugust 24, 1972 will be this year's selection. After the filling on that Thursday, the parcel of casks wereplaced into Warehouse 5 at the distillery and stored in the lower tier of stows 87 and 89. The richness andfruitiness found in this creation could only be obtained by the choice climate, cask wood, and generous age. Bottled atnatural cask strength without cill-filtration, the 1972 collection is a definitive Speyside single malt whisky. Only 800bottles have been released to the US which will run about $700 each.

Glenlivet Cellar Collection 1972 originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 28 Feb 2006 10:01:00 EST. These batches from unspecified years are chosen by John Ramsay, the malt master, with emphasis on qualityand consistency and will be available as an on-going basis rather than the typical 'out and done' releaseof vintages. The idea here overcomes the shortage of single malts we have come to get used to and makes The Glenrothesmore widely available. The ripe fruits, citrus, vanilla and hint of spice notes are characteristically complex with acreamy texture on the tongue. The barrel shaped bottle is about $45.

Glenrothes Select Reserve originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 27 Feb 2006 12:08:00 EST. Beforehe knew it, he decided to begin marketing his blends by buying special casks from Scottish distilleries and selling themunder the brand name of Compass Box Crafted Whiskies. Picking some of thebest aged grains, he has created whisky with outstanding profiles. The Compass Box line includes blended Scotchin addition to various vatted malts. There are also limited edition whiskies such as Orangerie, the once a year orangeand spice-infused whisky we mentioned back when it wasavailable in December. Try The Peat Monster. Some quick and important storingtips to keep in mind: keep bottles on their sides, store where there is little temperature fluctuation, high humidityis important for long term storage, and pay attention to the age worthiness of your wine before they go past theirprime. Keep in mind wine cellars are not just meant to only be pleasing to the eye, but they must be just as functionalas they are attractive. The need for a vapor barrier is commonly ignored when your designer doesn't have thenecessary knowledge of wine.

Wine Storage Tips originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 23 Feb 2006 19:04:00 EST. Knowing all the work it takes to hand roll a cigar, it's actuallyquite amazing they don't cost more then they already do... rolling leaves into themselves, inspecting thebest leaf for wrapping and sculpting the cigar to the requested shape. Earlier this month at the annual La Gloria CubanSuper Roll in Las Vegas, rollers got to compete for the top title of torcedor. If you think you have what it takes forfuture rolling events, sign upis about $500 (training included).

La Gloria Cubana Super Roll Cigar Rolling Contest originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 23 Feb 2006 18:04:00 EST.
Arecent Sotheby's Fine &Rare Wines auction at New Bond Street, London ended yesterday. A particular sale that caught my eye was Lot 12,Chateau Petrus 1982. Hammer price was at about 23,036 US dollars. An ultimate collectors wine, Petrus comes from asmall 28.4 acre vineyard named in honor of St. Peter. It is the only site where topsoil and subsoil are composedalmost entirely of heavy clay rich in iron. Ironically clay is typically unsuitable for high-quality wines, as it tendsto get water logged. Fermented in cement vats, the wine is aged in completely new oak barrels for 22 to 28 months, andright before bottling it is clarified with five fresh egg whites per barrel (they don't filter). Sotheby'snotes of developed color with great character in the nose of prunes and spices. Licorice with sweet gummy definitionand some sweet aniseed. Pruney finish with mocha as it lingers on the palate. At 10 bottles in the lot, average costper bottle is $2,304.

Pétrus at Sotheby's London Auction originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 23 Feb 2006 14:10:00 EST.
Forbes released an article telling us the detailed background onthe history of blended Scotch and what to look for in the crowd this year. Master blenders recognize the rightcomponents to harmoniously marry single malts to grain whiskies which give us blended Scotch whiskies. AnEdinburgh merchant was probably the first to do so in 1853 when he mixed the malt whisky from The Glenlivet with otherwhiskies to be labeled as Old Vatted Glenlivet, O.V.G. The merge proved to be less aggressive and soothing thenthe challenging drink of single malts. This and other blends corroborated that two styles of Scotch whisky was moreattractive to the general consumer than when sold separately. Even though some of us snobs might refuse to considerScotch blends, I suggest you give a try from the short list of current respected blends. When a single malt is notaround, from the list, I personally enjoy Chivas Royal Salute 21 Year and the 12 Year, Johnnie Walker Gold 18 Year, andDewar's Special Reserve 12 Year. What are your favorite blended Scotch whiskies?

Blended Scotch Whiskies originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 22 Feb 2006 21:03:00 EST. It has the understated formof a sleigh bed without the lavish bends. Leather covers its gentle curves and gives it an aged, cultured look thatadds a elegant decor to any bedroom with dark or rust-toned walls. The 5 day eventoffers a variety of activities to celebrate and promote cigars. Visits of tobacco plantations and even a tour of thefactory which was once home to Davidoff, Cohiba and Trinidad will take place. There will also be special cigarand spirit matching sessions. The whole cigar fest will set you back about 1,260 Cuban Convertible Pesos. Perhapswe should convert to a more useful currency, like US dollars. So if we multiply by the number of US dollars perconvertible peso, that comes out to ... 1,260 US dollars.

Festival del Habano originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 09 Feb 2006 16:06:00 EST. Only 12,624 of the bottles were produced. Coming in at second is Bollinger Blanc de Noirs Vielilles VignesFrancaises 1997 at $400 a pop. Despite coming from the Pinot Noir grape, it is a fine golden color. Dom PérignonRosé 1995 make is in the top 3 of course at $350. It is known as the aristocrat ofIslays. Lagavulin is one of the few great classics not only from Islay but Scotland it's self. The great peatsmoke aroma adds to its robust body, and is well balanced and smooth with a gentle sweetness. The 16 year is among myall time favorites of all single malts with its heady and pungent smokiness. Lagavulin means "the hollow wherethe mill is".

Lagavulin originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 30 Jan 2006 13:04:00 EST. The tunnel went down to 60 feet below ground, up to 5 feet high and almost .5miles long. Other captivating "features" found were 200 pounds of marijuana on the California side andthousands of pounds on the Mexico side. Cell phones, trucks, van, various documents and other drug cartel necessitieswere found on site. Considering this is of the 21 found since September 11, 2001, I am sure there will be many more tocome.
World's finest luxury smuggling tunnel found originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 27 Jan 2006 13:32:00 EST. Now this isn't quite as much as when the last Rembrandt was sold to StephenA. Wynn for $11.3 million, but it's still a memorable figure. Who is this mysterious bidder? Well, that'sfor Sotheby's to know, and us to find out. The painting also has a decent amount of history to it such as variouscharacteristics added to it after it was complete, and various restorations.

In the past few years, Ardbeg has finally begun to make its way in the US andalready has quite a name for its self. I find the 10 year to be particularly amazing because it really tastes and feelslike a 16. This is soon to become an always stocked item in my bar.
