High on a hill in the Summit Ranch subdivision in Denver, Colorado is today's home which was originally listed for $3.25 million. Concierge Auctions will sell this home on June 14 in cooperation with listing agents Jim and Barbara Appleby of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, who are also the sellers.

The six-bedroom home on more than 10 acres offers 11,000-square feet of space. The home's open floor plan and large windows are meant to make the most of the Continental Divide's natural beauty with sunrise, snow-capped and sunset mountain views. The home is also designed with spacious decks and patios overlooking acreage. The sunken great room has a massive stone hearth which opens to the gourmet kitchen and dining room. Warm, red oak floors ground an impressively high, 16-foot ceiling with a unique wood-encased beam treatment. The kitchen has granite countertops and stainless steel appliances including a professional gas range with six burners and griddle, a stainless steel refrigerator and freezer and a built-in wine center. The formal dining space opens to the great room and features a unique, wood-beamed ceiling with custom faux painting. The sunken library, also just off the great room has built-in knotty alder bookcases and a built-in wet bar with slab granite countertops and a copper bar sink. Two additional spaces on this main floor are a formal office with built-in knotty alder cabinets and bookshelves and slab granite desktop with its own outside entry door and a multipurpose room that could be used as private office space, a nursery or guest bedroom quarters.
We don't usually feature homes under the $500,000 mark but real estate commenter Spectacular Bid drew my attention to today's modest charmer in Montgomery, Alabama. This home was designed by architect and furniture designer Bobby McAlpine whose work has been featured in many of the popular shelter magazines. This three-bedroom English country style home has had its magazine moments, appearing in Southern Accents, House & Garden and British House & Garden. The home adheres to the tenets of English style without giving off that faux-for-show impression that other English country style home can. It has a good mix of formal and casual elements providing both elegance and comfort. It can be yours for just $499,000 and is listed with Bess Jenkins.

Those who have been with me for a few years on this estate-of-the day journey might remember this one. I first looked at this home back in 2006. Far from the Wolf is perhaps the grandest of the summer "cottages" built on Grindstone Neck in Winter Harbor, Maine. The home was built in the early 1890s by John Godfrey Moore, who developed the Grindstone Neck area as a getaway for New York society. This gorgeous shingled home is on 4.6 acres and has 10 bedrooms, each with a private bath.

One of the benefits of this beauty is that it boasts both water and mountain views. It has been lovingly restored and updated and features several large fireplaces and lots of beautiful woodwork in native woods including cherry, ash, birch, whitewood and oak. In some of the spaces the wainscoting extends nearly to the ceiling giving the home the appearance of a large wooden boat. Another great detail is the small tea house which sits on a granite cliff at the shoreline and has a granite fireplace. This home was listed at $9.65 million but is now listed at $7.9 million with LandVest.
The home takes its inspiration from the Stanford White Rosecliff Mansion. The home is on nearly an acre of grounds including stone terraces and a pool with spa. The homes arched doorways, columns, and balustraded roofline pay homage to its Bellevue Avenue inspiration.

The focal point of the home is a great room full of natural light with high ceilings, marble floors, a marble and gilt fireplace and a dramatic sweeping staircase. The open kitchen has marble columns, twin chandeliers, high-end appliances, and an antique, marble-topped island. Upstairs the master bedroom has hardwood floors, separate lounging and sleeping areas and a white marble fireplace. The onyx bath has dual vanities, a dual head shower, and a soaking tub. A balcony sitting area and an additional bedroom with marble bath complete the upper level. This home is listed at $3.95 million with Lila Delman.

For the last few years, my weekends have been framed around the compiling of the Sunday Real Estate Round-Up for this blog. This weekend was different. I was relieved of my responsibilities as of Thursday but I couldn't let Sunday come and go without a goodbye and a thank you.

When Jason Calacanis asked me to start this blog in 2004, we had nothing more than a vague idea to create a blog about luxury, a companion to Engadget, Autoblog and Gadling. Jason and Brian Alvey had a simple philosophy, hire people who are passionate about what they do and give them the space to write like the wind. I probably spent the first year or two trying to explain to pr people, friends and my family just what a blog was and why it was important. Those kinds of conversations are no longer necessary, blogging made it into, and became, the mainstream.

I always tell people this blog has been the best gig of my life. Certainly writing about luxury has its perks, from tasting scotch to admiring diamonds, but what kept me going through over 16,000 posts was the readership. You showed up. For estate of the day, for the Sunday round-ups, for the daily doses of eye candy, you have been here. You corrected my typos, you told me when I was wrong, you deepened and in many cases bettered the work I did. For everything, thank you.

It's been my honor and pleasure to work with some of the greatest writers in the luxury field, many of whom will continue to write here. They are the best at what they do. Read them, you will be better for it, I know I am.

A few more of my estate of the day posts will be rolling through over the next couple of days but my bags are packed, the train whistle is blowing in the distance. Safe travels and best wishes to all of you until we meet again.
This Is Just To Say, An Editor's Goodbye originally appeared on Luxist on Sun, 13 Mar 2011 09:02:00 EST. I first saw this one on Curbed a few weeks back. This contemporary home in North Dallas was built in 2007. The curving glass home has seven bedrooms and measures almost 15,000 square feet. The home is on 1.77 acres that includes a crescent-shaped pool and a large green lawn that gives the home a bit of a stadium like look from the outside. As Curbed pointed out some of the glass windows look out onto cement walls which span halfway up for privacy. The windows do mean that the home is flooded with bright light. Today's home is one of the priciest on the market in the Boston area. This French-style, three-story brick residence in Brookline, Massachusetts was designed and built between 1929 and 1930 by renowned Boston architect William T. Aldrich. The main home is on over three acres with manicured lawns, flower beds, shrubs and mature deciduous and coniferous trees.

The home has 20 principal rooms in the main house and there is also a separate one-bedroom guest house. The home has been thoroughly renovated to combine its original, formal style with modern amenities. The most unique feature in this home might be the light-filled indoor pool pavilion which is reached via an underground passageway that also serves as an art gallery. The pavilion offers additional entertaining area and a caterer's kitchen. Overall there are a total of 10 fireplaces, hardwood floors, hand-painted murals and other finishes, and ornate moldings. This home is listed at $15.75 million with LandVest.
Villa Stella is a Moroccan fantasy on Miami's ritzy Star Island. This four-bedroom, two-story home on the water has four enclosed garages including two that are fully air conditioned. The formal arrival court can hold up to 15 cars.

Inside awaits a private sanctuary done in a bright yet soft palette. The home's 30-foot ceilings display handpainted murals and skylights by muralist Yves Lanthier and the decor also has Southwestern and Balinese influences. The master and guest suite rooms are on the upper floor and staff quarters and a garden guest suite are on the ground floor. The master suite includes lavish his and hers baths with semi-precious light-colored onyx flooring and vanities, multiple shower heads, whirlpool bath, and heated towel racks. An enclosed rooftop observatory offers a quiet place to enjoy views all around anytime of the day or night. Carved wood and elaborate tile details give this home an exotic feel.

The kitchen has double wall ovens, double Sub Zero refrigerators, two dishwashers and a Viking gas stove with grill. The saltwater keyhole-shaped pool and bayside gazebo with a relaxation bed and summer kitchen offer views across the bay to South Beach. The home has 100 feet of waterfront with a boat dock for a yacht and jet skis. The backyard includes a swing set and doll house. The home's technology includes security cameras 24/7, audio/visual controls, interior and exterior lighting controls in every room. This home is listed at $24 million with Sylvia Fragos of Great Estates International Realty.
Vintage magic posters can be highly collectible and of course, the most famous musician, Houdini, often brings in the biggest returns. A rare Houdini poster, which is one of only five such posters known to exist, is going up for sale at a Potter & Potter Auctions in Chicago on March 26. The poster is one of more than 100 rare and valuable vintage magic posters which were discovered in a suburban Chicago home last year. Many of the poster swere purchased in the 1970s when they could still be bought fairly inexpensively.

The Houdini poster shows the legendary magician in handcuffs in front of a judge and jury in Germany. It represents a famous case in 1902 when Houdini was called a fraud by a German police officer. He sued for slander and won. Being a savvy self-promoter, he created the poster to dramatize the event and add to his fame. It is estimated at $15,000-$20,000. Also featured is a rare rare eight-sheet (7 feet x 9 feet) billboard advertising The Great Nicola. The huge poster is estimated at $2,500-$3,500. Many other posters in the sale can be had for just several hundred dollars. For more details visit www.potterauctions.com.
This is pretty intriguing, whisky brand The Balvenie is launching the Balvenie Rare Craft Roadshow, a nationwide search for the craftsmen and artisans across America who maintain a dedication to the practice and preservation of traditional crafts. The Balvenie Ambassadors Andrew Weir and Nicholas Pollacchi will traverse the U.S. in a Morgan car visiting with artisans in a variety of fields and documenting every step in a Web series and eventual documentary film. In addition to being featured on a dedicated website and in a nationwide print campaign, craftspeople will also have a chance to be honored at special celebratory events. The journey is meant to tie in with The Balevenie's own commitment to craftsmanship. The Balvenie Rare Craft Roadshow will kick-off in March 2011. The Jade Ocean building in Sunny Isles, Florida features the room shown above, what just might be the most luxurious kids playroom ever. The deluxe amenity for condo owners was outfitted by Florida's high-design children's store Genius Jones. The room includes mini versions of Philippe Starck ghost chairs and a mini Alfa Romeo.

It's not all kids stuff at this building though. The 50-story condo tower also has an infinity-edge pool, an ultra chic fitness center/health club with Technogym fitness technology; a resident only beach club with cabanas, and media and community rooms. Public spaces in the building were created in collaboration with Fendi Casa and the building's dramatic entrance features a six story waterfall.

Residences have floor-to-ceiling glass windows and terrace with panoramic views. Kitchens feature glass kitchen cabinets with granite countertops and stainless steel backsplashes as well as Miele and Sub-Zero stainless steel kitchen appliances. The most expensive unit in the building is a five-bedroom penthouse listed at $6.9 million.
The Austin Statesman reports that the hip Texas town will soon be home to six Rolls-Royce models. Auto dealer Sonny Morgan is adding the luxury car to his posh lineup at the John Eagle European dealership this month. The dealership already features Lotus, Aston Martin and Bentley models. Morgan told the Statesman that he thinks the $250,000 Rolls Ghost is a good fit for Austin's younger, tech-loving buyers. Business is good it appears, Morgan said that he has already sold three cars so far, two to buyers in San Antonio and one in Austin. This is the third dealership in Texas, there are Rolls dealerships in Dallas and Houston.
Master chocolatier Jacques Torres probably delivers more pleasure to more people on a daily basis than most of us, making him an excellent foil for Johns Hopkins neuroscientist David J. Linden as the two discuss the pursuit of pleasure from a brain-centered angle. The Compass of Pleasure is a program taking place at the Rubin Museum of Art in Manhattan on April 17.

Torres will use a weakness common to many of us (chocolate) to explore the fundamental pursuit of pleasure as it occurs in the human brain. The program is part of the museum's annual Brainwave series which sheds light on fascinating aspects of the mind. The talk costs $25 and yes, Torres is bringing samples. Book tickets to this talk and other conversations in the series that include conversations with painter David Salle, and actress Debra Winger at the Rubin Museum website.

Jacques Torres On The Science Of Pleasure originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 09 Mar 2011 21:01:00 EST.

Hands-free trash cans are great. What's not so great is if you have to do a wild hand-waving dance to get them to open or if, even worse, they slam shut while you are putting things in. Design-centered home goods brand simplehuman says that "innovation only makes sense if it's in sync with your needs" so they promise their sensor trash can won't unexpectedly open or close on you.

A little something called multi-sense technology keeps the can from having the drop on you. The trigger zone is a focused space directly above the lid which is precise enough to avoid false triggers. Once the lid is open, the bin enters task mode and the trigger zone extends to become more sensitive to activity, so the lid won't close before you're finished. After three seconds of continued activity, the lid automatically opens wider and switches to a 30-second stay-open mode. A natural charcoal filter is in the lid to help neutralize odors. The can will run up to 12 months with 6 high-quality alkaline C batteries, not included), or plug the can in with a power adapter which is sold separately. The 40L can is $225, the 48L recycler is $275 and the 55L is $275.

Sensor Can From simplehuman originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 09 Mar 2011 20:01:00 EST. Today's home sits high above the Ohio River in Louisville, Kentucky. This brick Tudor is on five acres of gardens and lawns. Designed by architects Nevin & Morgan in 1937, this brick Tudor-style home has a formal living room with decorative leaded celerestory windows and a banquet-sized dining room. A beautiful charcoal-gray library lies behind the center hall (alas, the chandelier is not being sold with the home), and accesses the terrace and gardens through French doors. A breakfast room with original cabinetry and a sitting room are located near the kitchen. The kitchen has a Viking professional range, Northland designer series refrigerator with matching beverage and wine cooler, ample cabinetry and hardwood countertops.

The master suite offers plenty of storage with a wall of custom cabinetry. It has an adjoining bath and large connecting bedroom used as a sitting room. Four additional bedrooms and two baths are located on the second level and the third floor contains one large and two smaller bedrooms as well as a craft or wrap room, and TV room. Outside a cobbled pathway leads to the broad limestone terrace at the back of the home, which overlooks the formal English garden. The property also has a carriage house with a two-room apartment over the four-car garage. This home is listed at $2.35 million.

A reader recently contacted Unexpected Treasures with a question regarding some international stamps. We aren't experts in philately but luckily, we've got friends in the stamp world. Charles Shreve, President of Spink Shreves Galleries in Dallas, Texas and New York, New York was kind enough to take a look at the pictures our reader sent in.

Luxist reader Beth reports that she received the collection from her grandfather. The stamps included the first one shown above which appears to be an error from Nicaragua. Stamp errors can in some cases be worth millions. The Inverted Jenny is the most famous example of this type of error which occurs when a sheet gets flipped upside down between press runs. The stamp shown at right isn't a true error. Charles Shreve says that it is what is called a freak rather than a true error which refers to an inverted center, a missing color or another major defect. This stamp is a misperforated stamp which is not unusual on this particular series of stamps from Nicaragua, which are called "Seebeck" issues. It has very little commercial value.

The comic book market continues to boom as the first comic book to feature Spider-Man sold for $1.1 million through comic book auction house ComicConnect.com, the same house that sold a 1938 edition of Action Comics No. 1, featuring Superman's debut last year for a record $1.5 million. Action Comics No. 1 originally sold for 10 cents and the Marvel Spider-Man sold for 12 cents in 1962. The copy that sold is in excellent condition and the cover shows Spider Man swinging by a web. Early comic books from the 1930s to 1950s are often called Golden Age comic books. The Spider-Man comes from what is known as the Silver Age this sale may end up raising the prices of other Silver Age books. Spider-Man remains popular with the public. A much-maligned and very expensive Spider-Man show is on Broadway and the movie franchise is being rebooted.

Spider-Man Comic Book Sells For $1.1 Million originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 09 Mar 2011 06:01:00 EST. Last month I mentioned that entertainment memorabilia auction house, Julien's Auctions, would be hosting an auction dedicated to the property of legendary guitarist and musician Slash, I knew I had to go see it in person. The sale includes a variety of famous guitars, memorabilia, vehicles and personal furniture and décor from his Hollywood Hills home and the sheer breadth of material is quite stunning. Slash, it could be said, might be a bit of a rock-and-roll packet. Guitars include a custom Stravinski Fender Stratocaster estimated at $3,000-5,000; a B.C. Rich Red Mockingbird guitar estimated at $2,000-4,000; and two versions of Slash's very own Gibson and Epiphone Slash Les Paul signature model guitars in Tobacco Sunburst estimated at $4,000-6,000.
Continue reading Luxist Phototour: The Collection of Slash at Julien's Auctions

Luxist Phototour: The Collection of Slash at Julien's Auctions originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 09 Mar 2011 05:02:00 EST.
You never know where stolen jewels might turn up but this latest find seems like a scene straight from a movie. BBC News reported that some of the jewels stolen from the Harry Winston boutique in Paris in 2008 have been recovered. In December 2008 four armed men entered the store around closing time and walked off with more than $100 million in jewelry and diamonds. No one was injured. This theft did have one quirky detail, at least two of the thieves wore wigs and women's clothing and addressed some of the store's staff by name.

French police have found some of the jewelry, around $25 million worth, hidden in a drain in a Paris suburb. A total of 19 rings and three sets of earrings were found inside a plastic container which was set into a cement mold at a house in Seine-Saint-Denis likely secreted away by the crafty crooks. The home belonged to one of the people being charged in the robbery. In the last few years police have interviewed at least 25 people in connection with the robbery and nine people were charged and jailed in 2009.
She's only just joined the show but Peggy Tanous, the latest housewife to join The Real Housewives of Orange County, should fit right in. After all, she's already part of the foreclosure club. Lansner on Real Estate has been following the story and reports that her home in Irvine, California was purchased in 2006 for $1.379 million and that she owes a total of $1,318,253. An auction is scheduled for March 17. Tanous is described as a former biking model and stay-at-home mom. She is friends with Alexis Bellino who has her own real estate trouble. Bellino's home is currently listed for $3.395 million in what appears to be a short sale situation. This is a reduction from the $3.695 million it was at when we looked at in December. The listing states that the owners "have over $6 million into the property" a reference it seems both to the initial outlay and the remodeling that the Bellinos did on the home.

In the video above Tanous gives the OC Register a tour showing off collections of swords, wax sculptures and the home movie theater complete with "butt shakers" to make the experience more realistic. Tanous is a fan of Versace, there's a Medusa head in the foyer tile and Versace china. Their wet bar also includes a wine tap system.

Newest "Real Housewife" Already Facing Foreclosure? originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 09 Mar 2011 03:01:00 EST.
Last month I mentioned that luxury furniture retailer Robb & Stucky had filed Chapter 11. Now it looks like the brand, which is based in Florida and also has stores in Arizona, Nevada and Texas, is facing potential liquidation.

Furniture Today reports that a U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Tampa, Florida has approved sale of the brand to liquidators Hudson Capital and Hyperams. Hudson Capital and Hyperams were the stalking horse bidder and the only validated bidder at an auction to sell off the brand. When the brand filed Chapter 11 in February it was hoping to raise enough money from potential investors to make a bid to keep the company in business. The Naples Daily News reports that the fate of the stores remains up in the air. Liquidation would mean that employees would lose their jobs, stores would close and customers could lose deposits they have put down on furniture.

The company sells a variety of high-end collections including Ralph Lauren home, Keno Brothers and Tommy Bahama. It was founded in 1915 in Florida. At the time of the Chapter 11 filing it listed assets and debts in the range of $50 million to $100 million. It employs about 1,300 people.

Luxury Furniture Retailer Robb & Stucky Bought By Liquidators originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 09 Mar 2011 02:01:00 EST.

Last July we watched in amazement as a J.M.W. Turner painting, "Modern Rome - Campo Vaccino" sold at auction Sotheby's London for over $45 million, setting a new record for the artist. Six bidders pursued the painting driving the price well above pre-sale expectations. The price beat the old record set in April 2006 at Christie's in New York when an 1841 view of Venice, "Giudecca, La Donna della Salute and San Giorgio," sold for $35.9 million but the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles took home the prize. Now the painting is finally going on display at the Getty but what happened in the interim is also interesting.

The Daily Mail reports that the British government postponed export of the work until last month in order to see if enough money could be raised to keep the painting from leaving the country. "Modern Rome - Campo Vaccino" was painted in 1839 and is his final painting of Rome, a culmination of all of the studies that he made during his two visits to the Italian capital. Before the most recent sale, the painting had only appeared on the open market once in the 171 years since it was painted. It was offered for sale by a descendant of the 5th Earl of Rosebery; the 5th Earl of Rosebery had bought the painting in 1878, while on honeymoon with his wife Hannah Rothschild. The painting was most recently displayed at the National Gallery of Scotland where it was on long-term loan.

Los Angeles museums have a small wealth of J.M.W. Turner works, the Getty now has two painting and two water colors. There are also Turners at the Huntington and the LACMA.

Most Expensive J.M.W.
A venerable old naval ship is seeking a new home. Philadelphia's Independence Seaport Museum has announced that it can't afford the restoration costs to keep USS Olympia, a National Historic Landmark dating back to 1892. The Philadelphia Business Journal reports that the museum is facing $10 to $20 million in restoration costs. Even the costs of stabilizing the ship would run $2 to $5 million. She currently has extensive interior and exterior corrosion of her outer hull but the interior is structurally sound and remarkably intact. The ship requires a new deck as well as repair to her entire waterline repair to an estimated 10% of her underwater hull surface.

The ship was Admiral George Dewey's flagship at the Battle of Manila Bay and is the sole surviving ship from the Spanish-American War. The ship's last mission was to carry the body of the Unknown Soldier from France to the United States in 1921. She's one of a kind, no sister ships were ever built and she is the world's oldest floating steel warship. The Olympia is clearly a national treasure but if she can't find a new home she could face the scrap heap.

The museum website says that the museum and its partners will convene with experts in various fields such as historic preservation, urban planning, maritime history, fundraising and economic development for a two-day summit on March 30-April 1 to find the best path for the ship.
Historic Naval Ship Faces The Scrap Heap Unless A New Owner Is Found originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 08 Mar 2011 23:01:00 EST.

Novelist Rex Pickett just might have the best book tour ever. The author who brought us Sideways, leading to a popular movie and an epic Merlot kerfuffle, is back with a new novel, Vertical. Vertical brings us the same characters, schlubby and charmingly wine-obsessed Miles and vain but endearing Jack on a new adventure. The fortunes of both the author and his characters have changed quite a bit in the intervening years and the book is a rollicking read.

Of course there's plenty of wine involved and so Pickett has been making the rounds of both book stores and wineries. This coming weekend he's up in Oregon and future events take him to Los Angeles, New York and even London. But for the real Sideways style experience you might want to join Pickett in Santa Ynez, California at Gainey Vineyard on Friday, April 15. The event takes place between 5:30 - 8:30 pm and there is no charge. Wine will be available for sale by the glass and books will be available for purchase.

As long as you are there, why not make a weekend of it. The Sideways wine trail page has great suggestions for places to visit that are connected to the book and movie.

Last summer we learned that the Museum of Space Flight is angling to get one of the three space shuttles that will be available to museums around the U.S. but another contender is the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.

NASA hasn't determined which museums across the U.S. will receive one of the three shuttles - the Enterprise, Endeavor or Atlantis. The Discovery is going to the Smithsonian which will in turn release the Enterprise, the shuttle prototype, to another museum. Any shuttle-ready space has to be completed this year in order to be considered. NPR reports that The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force is hoping to tempt NASA with the fact that the museum has free admission, free parking and its location means that much of the American population can reach it with a day's drive. The museum is actually part of the Air Force and is on the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The original Wright Brothers' flying field is nearby making this area a must-visit for flight lovers.

The Air Force wants a shuttle orbiter as part of an exhibit that will highlight the partnership between the Air Force and NASA. The shuttle would have plenty of company, the museum has over 300 exhibits including an Apollo space capsule. The museum is raising money for a new space gallery which could include a shuttle. It already has a Missile and Space Gallery which opened in 2004. The silo-like structure display missiles including the Titan I and II and Jupiter vertically so that they can be observed from the ground level or from an elevated platform. The gallery also showcases the Apollo 15 Command Module, Mercury and Gemini capsules, rocket engines, satellites and balloon gondolas.
The property includes a 9,100 square foot five-bedroom custom home; two-bedroom guest home; a one-bedroom caretakers home and a pair of shop buildings which can store all the toys you might need. Like many ranches, this one has a bit of taxidermy decor such as a half a stuffed deer jutting out of the fireplace. Antlers are everywhere including in a bed headboard and in a massive chandelier in the dining room. This home was once listed at $13.9 million but is now priced at $8.495 million with Hall and Hall.
Picasso's Nude, Green Leaves and Bust stunned the world when it sold at Christie's New York last May for $106.5 million. Now the Telegraph reports that the most expensive painting ever sold at auction is on display for the first time in the UK at the Tate Modern. The painting was done in 1932 during Picasso's very fruitful year when he did a series of paintings of his mistress and muse Marie-Therese Walter. Picasso first saw young Marie-Thérèse on the streets of Paris in 1927, when she was just seventeen years old. Because of her age and the status of his marriage to Olga Khokhlova the relationship was kept quiet for several years. This painting was part of a colorful explosion of works painted in January 1932 in anticipation of the major retrospective that he was planning. The Steve-Wynn-owned painting Le Reve is from this period as is La Lecture which sold for over $40 million earlier this year. The painting has been lent to the gallery by a private collector and will have pride of place in the new Pablo Picasso room in the Poetry and Dream wing on Level 3 of the building.
Pompeii has plopped down in New York City. A new exhibit, "Pompeii The Exhibit: Life and Death in the Shadow of Vesuvius" has opened at New York's Discovery Times Square. There's something about the centuries-old story of Pompeii that never fails to captivate the general public. It ties into our end-of-days fears, that idea that at any moment, a disruption could simply wipe us all out. Life went on at Pompeii for 700 years, a rich and artistic culture before, on a fateful day in 79 A.D., Mt. Vesuvius erupted and buried the citizens and all their worldly goods under lava and ash.
Continue reading Pompeii Lands In New York City

Pompeii Lands In New York City originally appeared on Luxist on Sun, 06 Mar 2011 21:02:00 EST.
