And it's only appropriate for a label that was formed when ambitious designers Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock got shut out of their Parsons School of Design senior fashion show. Unfazed, they hosted their own show and launched a label, instead. Four years later they were honored by Vogue and the Council of Fashion Designers of America and stars from Blake Lively to Rita Wilson don their designs.

Today the label, which is sold at fashion-forward boutiques and trend-setting Barneys New York, launched its own e-commerce site to sell directly to customers. Naturally, they're doing things their way.
Continue reading Vena Cava Launches E-Commerce Site

Vena Cava Launches E-Commerce Site originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 15 Mar 2011 17:02:00 EST.
Darren Aronofsky's hit film, "Black Swan," may do more for the arts than earn Natalie Portman a slew of best-actress awards. It may in fact have helped to boost professional dance companies - at least the ones performing the ballet "Swan Lake," which the film is centered around.

To prepare for the film, Portman trained with former New York City Ballet dancer Mary Helen Bowers. That company performs "Swan Lake" each year and this year its two-week run (which will end on Saturday, Feb. 26) sold extremely well, according to City Ballet spokesman Rob Daniels. The company sold out tickets to all nine of its performances in the 2,500-seat David A. Koch Theater in Lincoln Center.
Continue reading 'Black Swan' Good for Ballet Ticket Sales

'Black Swan' Good for Ballet Ticket Sales originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 20:01:00 EST. The latest wrinkle in Patricia Kluge's dispursal of fortune involves another famed billionaire: Donald Trump. This Wednesday, Trump had two lawyers representing him at the auction of Albemarle House, Kluge's luxe estate on 300 acres in tony Albemarle County, Va.

Shortly before the auction began, Steve Blaine and Les Goldman announced to the crowd of approximately 60 gathered in front of the Albemarle County Courthouse that they represented Donald Trump. What others might not have realized is that Trump had already purchased the adjacent 200 acres which, because of conditions outlined when Kluge gained the property in her divorce, would grant him right of first refusal on Albemare House.

"I think Mr. Trump wanted others to be aware that he was a bidder and he controlled the front yard of the house," said Baine, a Charlottesville, Va. lawyer. "He's a savvy business person but I think any other person with a serious interest in the house would have tried to figure out how to secure those 200 acres first."

Patricia Kluge, the 1980s society queen and ex-wife of billionaire media mogul John Kluge, has fallen on some hard times. Kluge was famously awarded the largest divorce settlement in history (a reported $1.6 million a week) but she seems to have figured out a way to spend it - and then some.

She's allegedly in default of nearly $23 million on her gilded mansion in Virginia, which made headlines for its outlandish $100 million price tag when it first hit the market in October 2009. Sotheby's didn't get that asking price, nor the drastically reduced $24 million it was eventually priced at. Instead, on Feb. 16, the 23,538-square-foot home will be auctioned on the Albemarle County courthouse steps.

Kluge's house isn't the only possession she's losing: Her antiques and jewelry have already been auctioned through Sotheby's. Her winery was foreclosed on and its inventory also sold off at auction. On top of that, several lots in the Vineyard Estates subdivision she devised for her property were also auctioned.

The Hook reported that according to court records, Kluge borrowed a whopping $66 million for the house, winery and subdivision.

How could Kluge have blown through her fortune and now lost it all?
Continue reading Patricia Kluge: Billionaire's Ex-Wife Faces Foreclosure

Filed under: Estates, Wine, Real Estate Developments, Wealth, Architecture & Design

Patricia Kluge: Billionaire's Ex-Wife Faces Foreclosure originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 21 Jan 2011 18:01:00 EST. During a weekend stay you might exercise, see doctors and wellness experts and enjoy spa treatments, but the food is where some of the most subtle and sublime healthiness takes place. Earlier this year MSN named the Canyon Ranch Grill at Las Vegas' Palazzo hotel one of the Top 10 Heart-Healthy Restaurants in the U.S. We asked the culinary team at Canyon Ranch to share three healthy summer recipes and their secrets.

Salmon w/ Blueberry Mango Salsa

Health Benefits:
Fish, specifically salmon, is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids which have been shown to increase optimal brain functioning by decreasing inflammation and keeping the blood vessels flexible.

Antioxidants, found in brightly colored fruits and veggies like blueberries and red peppers, protect against free-radical damage.

Maybe it's because if you truly are somebody, you'd already own a house in the Hamptons, or plan to rent one for the season, or certainly at least know someone with a guest room. No matter the reason, it's a fact that there's a dearth of hip hotel options on the east end of Long Island. Weekend visitors to the Hamptons can choose from glorified motels or stodgy historic inns (both of which will snare you with a three-night minimum at top rates). Until now.

Swedish hotelier Jenny Ljungberg of c/o Hotels took over the East Hampton landmark the Maidstone Arms in 2008 and renamed it c/o The Maidstone. She first reworked the restaurant with a slow-food focus, something she pioneered at her five other properties in and around Stockholm. The Maidstone's restaurant, The Living Room, opened to positive reviews and a packed reservations list last Summer. After further renovation to the rooms during the off season, the hotel is now fully operating with 19 guest rooms, each decorated as a subtle homage to a famous Scandinavian.

From June 11 to July 11, football fans from around the world will descend on South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The 20-hour flight for Americans means it's worth staving off jet lag for another week or two and sticking around to explore the country. Of the nine cities where games will be played, Cape Town is by far the most desirable place to spend the extra time, and its in close proximity to one of the most stunning wine regions in the world. We've compiled a list of top insider tips for what not to miss in Cape Town. Here it is:

Silicon Valley entrepreneur and investor Katrina Garnett recently launched My Little Swans, a luxury family travel web site for adventurous families looking for one-of-a-kind adventures that involve things like lunch at a Bedoin camp in Jordan and sailing Alaska's Inside Passage on a private yacht. Unlike her previous, very-techie businesses, this one was born out of Garnett's hobby: She's originally from Australia and she and her husband regularly take their three children on ambitious trips across the globe.

Garnett's not intimidated by traveling with kids, instead she's passionate about the advantages of exposing children to world cultures. MyLittleSwans.com aims to cut out the travel agent by featuring itineraries from her many trips with restaurant, hotel, shopping and other suggestions of places she and her concierge partners have personally vetted. Plus, the site's selected list of tour operators in each of those destinations can arrange for custom adventures from a backstage tour of a Chinese opera to a hiking trip with the Maasai tribe in Tanzania.

Garnett - and by extension her site - is like that in-the-know friend always up on the newest, hottest and best. But she also shares the little-known, like her personal watchmaker in Switzerland and jeweler in Paris. She spent two years and more than $2 million of her own money developing the site and made sure it included a social media aspect, which she believes is essential for web 2.0 success. We chatted with this firecracker over drinks at New York's Gramercy Tavern and asked her to Tell Us Everything.

Why did you decide to go into travel?
I've been planning world adventures for my family for 15 years, from the time my firstborn was less than a year old. Over the years, numerous friends and acquaintances have sought me out for travel advice, so I've shared my itineraries and photos with them, and they've taken the same or similar trips and loved them.

But as the number of requests grew - and the Web became increasingly difficult to navigate from a discerning point of view - I saw there was need for a comprehensive trustworthy online resource that makes it easy for families to plan extraordinary journeys and to go straight to the source for the best guides and insider experiences.

My Little Swans is not just a bunch of pretty pictures and opinions. There are, of course, countless travel websites and online sources, but I think few that are developed with an eye to the future and a deep understanding of the tech underbelly; I'm a total tech nerd. And as most of my friends know, I'm also a bit of a perfectionist and can be a nut when it comes to research, so the MLS content reflects this 150 percent and always will - nothing is "pay for play" or ad-driven.
Continue reading Tell Us Everything, Travel Entrepreneur Katrina A.

Make like Samantha, Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte and head to Morocco, suddenly the hottest destination on the map. Although Morocco plays Abu Dhabi, UAE, in the movie "Sex and the City 2," which opened yesterday. But never mind that, Morocco has been absolutely everywhere in the last six months. Popping up in Vogue fashion spreads, on the pages of Bazaar magazine (with a spread on jewelry designer Paloma Picasso's Marrakech home), and on travel pages of many a newspaper (The New York Times this month touted Casablanca's contemporary art scene). So what does all this mean?

It's time to head to Morocco.

And the highly anticipated Royal Mansour Marrakech, owned by King Mohammed VI of Morocco, promises to be a hot destination when it opens in July. The King is on a mission to bring 10 million new visitors to his country by the end of this year and it seems that he's off to a good start. This property is made up of 53 different riads. The traditional Moroccan-style homes with center courtyards were each built by craftsmen, filled with traditional tiles and textiles and furnished with antiques to showcase the best of Moroccan design. The resort's eight-acre property is speckled with ancient trees (some dating back 400 years) and is located centrally in the medina, or old town area of Marrakech with views of the Atlas mountains in the distance. Three restaurants on the property will be overseen by three-Michelin-stared chef, Yannick Alléno of Paris' Le Meurice and a 27,000 square foot spa promises to wow. Rates start at $1,850 a night. No doubt Carrie and crew would have stayed there had it been open.

Wednesday night the rooftop space at New York's New Museum was utterly jam-packed with artists, tech-heads and creative types, including Kate Spade and model Doutzen Kroes, celebrating the 25th anniversary of AOL (Luxist's parent company). Famed artist Chuck Close was commissioned by AOL to create portraits of innovators from the last 25 years. The first phase of this "Project on Creativity" was on display in the rooftop space while model-worthy servers made the rounds with Champagne and truffle mac and cheese on Lucite trays.

Close's literally larger-than-life portraits focused on the faces of Claire Danes, the Dali Lama, inventor Dean Kaman, Close himself and others, all done in the artist's typical documentary style. (The trouble was catching a glimpse of them through the thick crowd.) The photographs (and others yet to be taken) will be used in a campaign for AOL's 25th anniversary year.

How did AOL ever get hooked up with the renowned artist whose work hangs in the MoMA and the collections of many other museums -- and how is Kate Spade involved?
Continue reading Artist Chuck Close's Portrait Project with AOL

Artist Chuck Close's Portrait Project with AOL originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 27 May 2010 18:02:00 EST.
Last week designers flocked from around the globe to New York's Jacob Javits Center for the International Contemporary Furniture Fair. Representatives from Japan, Germany, Italy, the U.K. and elsewhere showed their latest in home furnishings and decor while shop owners, buyers, architects and interior designers scanned the 2,000 vendors for inspiration.

Luxist was also there scouting the latest innovations for the home. What we discovered was designers creating furnishings out of unusual materials - like resin, rubber and reclaimed wood from the Coney Island boardwalk. Here we've collected a sampling of interesting new products - and sure-fire conversation pieces - that use materials in innovative ways. Perfect for the luxe home.

The fashion world knows Amanda Brooks and, although you may not know her name, you've likely seen her - on the pages of the J.Crew catalog; appearing in a TOD'S ad campaign, and sporadically being featured in fashion magazines and on society pages. The former creative director of Tuleh, Vogue writer, and consultant to top designers recently published her first book: "I Love Your Style," a conversational style guide that mixes personal history with lessons from style icons. Brooks' writing is down to earth, yet she can't help but come off as the cool, in-the-know sister. She cites examples from styles worn by her famous friends and other fashion icons she admires using photos of herself and others at A-list parties looking great and daring to be different.

She was born into it: Raised in NY and Palm Beach, her mother's bridesmaid dresses were designed by Lilly Pulitzer. After Brooks' book was released Sept. 9 she made appearances at top boutiques across the country. Channel threw her two parties, Tod's threw three and Diane Von Furstenburg, who wrote the forward, hosted the book launch party in New York. We caught up with Brooks, now Fashion Director at talent agency William Morris Endeavor, and asked her to Tell Us Everything. Here's what she said...

Continue reading Tell Us Everything, Fashion Consultant Amanda Brooks

Filed under: Apparel, Tell Us Everything

Tell Us Everything, Fashion Consultant Amanda Brooks originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 18 May 2010 08:01:00 EST. Spring has sprung in the Big Apple and the biggest sign of the season is the new crowds on sidewalks and rooftops. Restaurants' cafe tables have come out of storage and the sidewalks are now packed, Parisian-style, with people-watchers, coffee-sippers and, of course, cocktailers. Whether you're looking for the streetside scene, the hidden garden or the top-of-the-world views from rooftops, there's a new hot spot in New York that fits the bill. Here's where to see and be-sipping this spring.
Continue reading New York's Top New Outdoor Cocktail Spots

New York's Top New Outdoor Cocktail Spots originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 11 May 2010 14:02:00 EST.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art's already-incredible Costume Institute just got 23,500 objects better. The Brooklyn Museum's Costume Collection, the oldest and greatest collection of fashion from the 18th to 20th century was recently transferred to the Met for safe keeping and preservation in the Met's incredible facility, which will be getting a state-of-the-art upgrade in the near future. To celebrate this new partnership between the two museums, they're running concurrent fashion exhibits celebrating American style. Although the exhibits include works by European designers, all the garments were worn by stylish American women such as Millicent Rogers and Austine Hearst, great patrons of the Brooklyn Museum.

My colleague, Bobbie Leigh, recently wrote about The Met's exhibit, "American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity." The Brooklyn Museum exhibit "American High Style" takes visitors through the last century in fashion with focus on the French couture designers who influenced American fashion, early American women designers of the mid-century and certain important designers such as Elsa Schiaparelli, shoe designer Steven Arpad and others.

We sat down with curator Jan Glier Reeder and asked her to Tell Us Everything. Reeder spent the last three years assessing the collection, mounting the exhibit and putting together its weighty book.
Continue reading Tell Us Everything, "American High Style" Curator Jan Glier Reeder

Filed under: Apparel, Events, Art, Tell Us Everything

Tell Us Everything, "American High Style" Curator Jan Glier Reeder originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 11 May 2010 08:02:00 EST.
It's no surprise that New York and Napa Valley restaurants dominated the top spots at Monday night's James Beard Awards held at Lincoln Center. Foodies of every stripe -- from Food Network stars to French Laundry chefs -- were in attendance at the black-tie event. A red carpet was even set up in the new courtyard outside Avery Fisher Hall so the truly food-obsessed could catch a glimpse of chefs like Wolfgang Puck, Lidia Bastianich and Alton Brown, the evenings co-hosts. (Pictured above is Brown, JBF president Susan Ungaro, Bastianich and Ted Allen arriving on the red carpet.)

The big awards of the evening went to New York's Marea for Best New Restaurant; Tom Colicchio of the Craft restaurants (and a regular "Top Chef" judge) won the Outstanding Chef Award; Daniel Boulud won the Outstanding Restaurant Award for Daniel, another New York restaurant; the Outstanding Pastry Chef award went to Nichole Plue of Redd in Napa Valley; and Timothy Hollingsworth of Napa's famous The French Laundry, won the Rising Star Chef of the Year Award.

Backstage, talk turned to to food trends -- something fine-dining chefs don't look kindly on -- and the seemingly omnipresent locavore movement. And we even found out where these top chefs are excited to eat.
Continue reading James Beard Award Winners 2010: Marea, Daniel, Craft and French Laundry

James Beard Award Winners 2010: Marea, Daniel, Craft and French Laundry originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 06 May 2010 20:02:00 EST.
Bathrooms have made a cultural shift in our society. They've gone from being small, functional rooms, morphing with his-and-hers sinks, adjoining dressing rooms and jacuzzi tubs into a room of rest and relaxation. Now bathrooms have shifted once again -- thanks in part to the prevalence of spas and their aesthetic into our lives. Bathrooms are now often the crown jewel, or hidden secret, of many homes. In some cases they're even front and center in master suites, seen just behind glass walls. (How's that for modesty.) The following bathrooms from China, Spain and Costa Rica and beyond, highlighted in the recent book, "150 Best Bathroom Ideas," published by Collins Design, exemplify the exciting direction bathroom design is headed.

April 22 marks the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day celebration. To mark the event, we look at some modern, sustainably designed homes featured in the new book "New Green Homes" by Spanish architects Sergi Costa Duran, Ethel Baraona Pohl and Liliana Bollini and published by Collins Design. Each of the homes are specifically adapted to their climates using some of the latest energy-saving technology. They may conserve energy but there's no skimping on lifestyle. And the setting alone of many of these homes will drop a few jaws.

On May 31 antiques lovers and voyeurs can step inside Virginia billionaire-cum-winemaker Patricia Kluge's 45-room estate in Albermarle County, Va., for a peek at what could be theirs. Kluge's grand estate, Albermarle House, is on the market and she plans to sell off its contents during a two-day auction conducted by Sotheby's on June 8 and 9. Those who buy an auction catalog are welcome to the preview the auction items on-site in May.

"Albemarle House, [Kluge's] collaboration with designer David Easton, rejuvenated high-style country living in the United States in the English tradition, which had declined since the early 20th century," says Sotheby's Worldwide head of French, Continental and English furniture, Alistair Clarke.

Sotheby's will auction Kluge's entire collection within the house, much of which came from top dealers in the U.K. and private collections around the world, including Chinese paintings and works of art, books, sporting guns, jewels, lighting and decorative objects as well as designer gowns by Christian Lacroix and Givenchy. The Kluges' gilded life will be on the auction block.

The home itself is for sale, too. Kluge hasn't had any luck selling the 300-acre estate, which she originally listed for $100 million in October 2009. It's a wonder why she hasn't been more patient with the mansion and its 23,538-square-feet, eight-bedrooms and 13 baths. She recently reduced the price to $48 million after less than a year.

New hotels are popping up on Mexico's Riviera Maya as faster than you can say "Caribbean beachfront land grab." The pristine stretch of white-sand beach is perfectly situated close to the Cancun airport and the charming town of Playa del Carmen -- that is, if you ever want to leave your resort.

Luxury resorts like the Fairmont Mayakoba have been populating the Yucatan Peninsula since the lovely Maroma brought luxe (and an amazing spa) to the area in the late '90s. But late in 2007, a new player arrived in the area with a new trick: the private pool villa. The Banyan Tree Mayakoba is a resort with a grand scale -- the buildings feel over sized, the roofs curving up to the sky for dramatic effect -- and its setting, built around a fresh-water lagoon lends an exotic mystique. The only catch with providing guests with such lavish rooms and private pools, is they tend to stay in them.
Aside from Michelin stars and positive restaurant reviews, these awards are the biggest recognition in the food world. Chosen by a non-profit made up of food and wine enthusiasts, the awards take a nationwide look at the dining scene pulling out the stars of today and tomorrow. What that means to you is: Make your reservations now -- especially at Robert DeNiro's latest New York restaurant, Locanda Verde (right) -- these places are about to get hotter.

Anyone can attend the black-tie Chef and Restaurant Awards which take place on May 3 at Lincoln Center in New York. Tickets are $450 for non-members and include the awards ceremony hosted by The Food Network's Alton Brown, Wolfgang Puck and PBS chef Lidia Bastianich (whose cookbook "Lidia Cooks from the Heart of Italy" is up for a nomination). But the best part will be the gala reception afterward where guests can sample food by notable chefs from around the country who were chosen by a past Outstanding Chef winner.

And the nominees are ...

Continue reading Where to Eat Now: James Beard Award Finalists Announced

Where to Eat Now: James Beard Award Finalists Announced originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 11:01:00 EST.
Walk into Grahame G. Fowler's cozy West Village, New York men's shop and you'll want to grab a chair and stay a while. First, the tiny shop, feels like a cool, men's club, packed with all sorts of things; layered rugs, armchairs, scooters and photography from Santa Monica's Rose Gallery. But also, there's Fowler, an amiable British chap; the man behind the look, who has parlayed his background in textiles and design into the made-in-New-York specialty shop. And looking around you know Fowler must be an interesting man. You've got tough, broken-in, black-leather Falstaff jackets and vintage Omega watches next to colorful bow ties, pink-gingham button downs and bright, striped belts. This is the closet of an interesting man.

We sat down with Fowler, across from the mechanical clothes rack (a relic from the shop's days as a dry cleaner), to talk with him about menswear, his 1960s Manchester inspirations and his collection of more than 50 Lambretta scooters.

"They are crazy rugs but that's what I like," says Michael Roubini of Roubini Rugs. Since 1985, his family's rug company has been partnering with designers to create special collections. Being Italian, they started with some of their favorite Italian designers such as Missoni, Roberto Cavalli, Versace and Fornasetti. Last week they added a new, bold-faced name to their list of collaborators.

A reception at the company's New York showroom launched its newest line in partnership with the Tony Duquette company. Duquette (above right), who designed sets for Fred Astaire musicals, jewelry for Tom Ford and costumes for Broadway plays, in addition to a host of lavish interiors, passed away in 1999, but his business partner of 25 years, Hutton Wilkinson (above left) has carried on the venerable "More is More" mantra of the interior design business.

In an era of celebrity chefs and big food personalities with TV shows, magazines and books, blogs and cookware lines, French chef Daniel Boulud is in some ways a throwback. A trained chef with farm roots and a fine-dining pedigree whose built a string of successful restaurants, now being replicated all over the world. Boulud is best known for his eponymous Manhattan restaurant Daniel, which this year earned him three Michelin stars - the Academy Award for Best Picture equivalent for a chef - it's considered the highest honor a restaurant can earn.

Monday afternoon a line of chilly foodies stretched along 51st Street where an unusual food truck was doling out more than the usual hot dogs and kabobs. Chef Daniel Boulud - thrice Michelin-starred - stood in the window, with lumberjack hat, earflaps and all, handing out free lunches to lucky winners.

The two-hour event featured four top New York chefs and was orchestrated by NBC New York to promote its new food site, Feast, which is scheduled to launch next week. Lucky winners who entered via the web site were given a spot at one of the four trucks. At Boulud's truck (above) eaters got to sample some of the menu items from his more casual, downtown restaurant DBGB Kitchen & Bar.
This stilettoed PR assistants clutching clip-board guest lists might not be too thrilled about it, but this season, they've lost control. Several fashion designers are opening up their guest lists. And now fashionistas can pop bon bons and watch some of the Fall 2010 collections debuting at New York Fashion Week from their own homes, thanks to live online streaming.

Last month, a new luxury desert resort managed by Banyan Tree opened its doors in Al Wadi, United Arab Emirates. More than half of the new Banyan Tree Al Wadi's 250 acres is set aside as a nature reserve with Arabian gazelles and local antelope or "oryxes." The desert resort consists of 101 tented villas designed with inspiration from the area's Bedouin tribes, each with their own "oasis" - a private full-size pool.

The property has a beach and access to a championship 18-hole golf course. It's located 12 miles outside the city of Ras Al Khaimah in the northern most Emirate, and 45 minutes from the Dubai International Airport. At the resort, visitors can take part in decidedly Middle-Eastern pastimes: falconry, camel riding, desert drives, or floating the river on traditional "dhow" Arabic sailing vessels.

The 10,000-square-foot Spa Al Wadi features 10 tented treatment pavilions. As with all Banyan Tree resorts, each therapist is trained at the Banyan Tree Spa Academy in Phuket, Thailand. Come March, the spa will offer an almost anti-desert experience in its "Rainforest hydrothermal circuit" - perhaps it's needed after those desert drives.

The Singapore-based resort operator runs 15 exclusive Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts all over the world including Ringha and Lijang and two others in China; two in the Maldives and several in the works including one in Vietnam to open 2011.

On Monday, Feb. 8, 500 lucky New Yorkers will get a chance to taste gourmet fast food of sorts from some of the city's most popular chefs. It'll be the street cart equivalent of New York City Ballet dancers doing pirouettes on a subway platform, or Broadway actors singing karaoke in a dive bar. In other words, a rare treat.

Four top chefs - Daniel Boulud, Alain Ducasse, Paul Liebrandt and Michael White - will be operating street carts and in four top secret locations around Manhattan. The lunches will be free, but you know what they say about free lunches.
Continue reading New York Celebrity Chefs Serve Up Street Food

New York Celebrity Chefs Serve Up Street Food originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 04 Feb 2010 10:04:00 EST.

Last week, high-end event planner Preston Bailey gathered hundreds in the sprawling 69th Regiment Armory in Manhattan to celebrate the launch of his fourth book, "Preston Bailey Celebrations." The gorgeous book is filled with images of the lavish events he's designed the world over (with rates starting at $250,000), from a stunning Tiffany-glass inspired wedding in New York to a reception with giant floral animals in Bali. So you can expect his own party would be a stunner - not to mention celebrity-tinged.

Bailey created a magical environment with no shortage of glitz (above). Two giant disco balls dramatically projected light throughout the room and dreamlike trees glowed at the entrance. A giant runway ran down the middle of the room, which was projected with a rotating image of pages from his book, giving it the illusion of a printing press. The runway served as a stage for performers such as Martha "Everybody Dance Now" Wash and Gloria Gaynor, then later was filled with attendees dancing. Bailey was true to his theory that a diverse crowd makes for the best parties. He was feted by quite a diverse crowd.
Continue reading Tell Us Everything, Event Designer Preston Bailey

Filed under: Events, Tell Us Everything

Tell Us Everything, Event Designer Preston Bailey originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 02 Feb 2010 09:01:00 EST.
Technology can enhance your love life. Just ask anyone whose ever had text sex. (Phone sex is so old millennium.) Twitter, on the other hand, can do more than excite, it can land you deals on Valentine's Day hotel packages.

In the coming weeks, several hotels and resorts plan to release romance packages and other specials exclusively to the Twittisphere. The savings range from an $800 off three nights at Florida's five-star ONE Bal Harbour resort to a 25 percent reduction at the gorgeous Rock Resorts' The Landings St. Lucia (pictured). Your sweetheart never needs to know.

Here are four Valentine's Day specials and how to track them down on Twitter:
Continue reading Twitter-Only Valentine's Day Specials

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Lux Tips

Twitter-Only Valentine's Day Specials originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 26 Jan 2010 16:01:00 EST.

Usually a "soft launch" is a quiet affair with friends and employers gathered for a big round of encouragement smiles, trying menu items and testing out drink concoctions. Someone forgot to tell that to Hyatt, who gathered a crowd of 300 to toast their highly anticipated new Andaz hotel in Manhattan.

Andaz is a new boutique concept from the hotel giant with locations in West Hollywood and London. Andaz Wall Street is the first in New York, with another on Fifth Avenue to open this spring. The Wall Street location officially opened to the public on Jan. 18.

At the housewarming, the restaurant, Wall & Water, was packed to the gills as guests gathered around marble "bars" for tastings of smoked salmon, arugula salad, grilled scallops and other bites being cooked before their eyes in the dining room.

Downstairs at Bar Seven Five, guests could try a choice of several different drink concoctions including a signature bourbon drink served flaming. Instead of a traditional bar with mixologists working their magic on one side and guests on the other, the lounge is laid out with a series of square-marble islands that break down the wall between guest and server, giving the bar an air of a high-end kitchen. Alchemy, a duo behind several successful New York speakeasies, designed the cocktail menu with an appropriately hip retro flair.

At right, Dr. Oz's daughter, Daphne Oz, with Lily Cowles, Natasha Lennard and Elizabeth Cordry.

Patricia Kluge, 61, is probably best known as the former wife of Metromedia billionaire John Kluge, although their divorce happened nearly 20 years ago. It takes a while for folks to forget about that much money. In the 1990s they were said to be the wealthiest couple in America known for their lavish parties and high-profile friends like Malcolm Forbes, Frank Sinatra and Katherine Graham. But more recently the English-Iranian Kluge has put her fortune to work.

Ten years ago she began planting grapes on her 1,800 acres of rolling Albemarle County, Virginia property - one of the most enviable plots of land in all of Virginia. Her ambition was to become the most prestigious winery on the East Coast and with advice from Robert Mondavi, top wine consultants from France and a state-of-the-art winery, she's getting there. Her wines, which sometimes seem a bit ambitiously priced, have done well in competitions (especially the Blanc de Blancs sparkling Chardonnay and sparkling rosé), are now available in 16 states and China, and she has one of the most lovely tasting rooms in the area.

Most recently in the news for putting her 25,000-square-foot, 45-room estate on the market for $100 million, Kluge and her husband, William Moses, are downsizing, but still keeping 1800 acres and the winery. They had architect David Easton build them a 6,500-square-foot "old Virginia"-style home on another portion of their land which they've designated to be "Vineyard Estates," an über-high-end community of which, they'll be the first residents.

On the 10 anniversary of her Kluge Estates winery, we asked Patricia to tell us everything:

1. What made you want to go into winemaking 10 years ago?

I've always loved wine, particularly the art of pairing wine and food. I'm an avid gardener and consider myself a steward of the land so I was not surprised to learn, when studying my genealogy, that I have farmers in my ancestry. For some time I would look out over the rolling hills and the many acres surrounding my home and felt that creating a vineyard and winemaking operation was a natural choice. I also researched this very thoroughly, studied the soils, consulted with experienced individuals within the industry. Their affirmation of my dream proved that my gut was pointing me in the right direction.

2. For many in Virginia a vineyard is something of a gentleman farmer's pursuit but from the start you have been very serious about making Kluge world-renowned. Did you ever consider just dabbling in it as a hobby?

Although I have hobbies, gardening for instance, I don't do anything halfway. I really throw myself into every endeavor and try to be as educated as possible. So to enter into the wine business with anything less than 100 percent commitment, the utmost passion and excitement never crossed my mind.

3. How close are you to your goal?

The problem with goals is that I keep raising the bar! When we started we had about 30 acres and a handful of varietals. We launched with three wines. Kluge Estate now has over 220 acres under vine, 8 varietals planted and 4 brands. My new goal is to see our wines available in all 50 states.

4. What have you learned in that time about the art/science of winemaking?

In addition to our fabulous vineyard staff and winemakers at Kluge Estate we work with two great consultants from France: Michel Rolland for our red program and Laurent Champs for our sparkling program. Their time in the field and blending in the cellar prove that there is an art and a science to it. There is a saying that anyone can be a cook but a handful of people study and train to become great chefs. There is that difference when working with an experienced winemaking team.

5. What's a common misunderstanding about wine?

I think people can take wine very seriously, to the point where the fun is taken out of it. As a business I do take it seriously but wine is meant to be enjoyed, shared and it can enhance an experience much like music. When I think of a meaningful evening, a great meal or special celebration, there is always wine involved.

Sadly, iconic New York restaurant Tavern on the Green has shut its doors for good. The owners filed for bankruptcy and next week auction house Guernsey's will be selling the Central Park restaurant's glitzy contents to the highest bidder (including the entrance tent, above) during a three-day auction.

This Wednesday potential bidders began previewing the goods and will continue to every day from now until Tuesday, from noon until 8 p.m. The auction begins Wednesday, Jan. 13 although some items can be bid on early online.

With more than 25,000 auction items - the front-entrance sign and Baccarat-crystal chandeliers alike - and values anywhere from $100 to $1.2 million, bidders are likely to need a little guidance. That's why we consulted New York antiques appraiser Helaine Fendelman to see what items are worth bidding on and what's just kitsch.

A long-time New Yorker, Fendelman calls dining at Tavern a "quintessential New York experience." But she says, memorabilia from the restaurant will only hold its value if the restaurant's name continues to be recognizable.

Brand-name items are safe bets, she says. "A Waterford chandelier will retain its value and it will have the added cache of being from Tavern on the Green."

As for Tavern memorabilia, Fendelman advises picking "the iconic items that are identified with the restaurant" and always get a letter of authenticity from the auction house. She also says to beware of items that are common. If there are too many of a certain item, like the place settings, for example, they won't be worth anything. Also stay away from items that have been reproduced often. "Collectors shy away from things that have been imitated over and over again."

See the slide show below for 25 must-have picks. Then see and bid on the full list of auction items here.

Just two miles from the packed-in-like-sardines masses in Times Square, a different sort of New Year's Eve party was taking place at the exclusive Soho House New York. With a 1920's theme, brass band, DJ and cabaret performers, members and their guests filled the sixth floor dining room, bar and drawing room donning era-appropriate flapper dresses, bowler hats and tuxedos.

The private club is an offshoot of the original Soho House in London. In New York the club's name is a bit of a misnomer since it's set in the trendy nightlife hub of the Meatpacking District. Famous for its 15 minutes in a "Sex and the City" episode where Samantha gets kicked out of the rooftop pool because she's not a member, the club today is a mix of 30-something financiers and creatives. (One financier shared that he had to play up his hobby of dealing art in order to gain membership, since the club prefers to foster members in the creative industries.)

On New Year's Eve, two dinner seatings filled the crystal-chandelier topped dining room where guests nibbled on appetizers such as chestnut soup with truffles; lobster salad; and foie gras with spiced pear chutney. The perfectly cooked beef tenderloin and red-wine-glazed root vegetables was the standout entree with the other choices, braised fluke and cannelloni, distant seconds. During the leisurely dinner magicians entertained dinners and the band played jazz and ragtime.

After dinner guests retired to the drawing room where tables were reserved for bottle service (magnums of Champagne being the favored bottle). The party took a livelier spin when a DJ, dressed in wiseguy attire, began spinning pop tunes. The party reached a crescendo just as midnight struck. After the new year, more friends-of-members filled the rooms putting a squeeze on capacity. Some enjoyed the small smoking room (a rarity in Manhattan) where a burlesque performer entertained from a cage.

In a city hard hit by the economy in 2009, the Soho House channeled the zeitgeist of Manhattan with it's '20s theme.
Score one for 2009 and anglophiles everywhere: An English baroque jewel was saved this year thanks to public support raised by the National Trust of Britain and it's American arm, The Royal Oak Foundation. The year-and-a-half-long campaign raised nearly $5 million to save Seaton Delaval Hall in Newcastle.

The 1731 landmark was designed by famed architect Sir John Vanbrugh (who designed Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard), and is said to be one of Britain's most important Baroque country houses. In spring 2010 it will open to the public for tours and events, bringing the north-eastern part of England a much needed tourist attraction.

Famed Central Park restaurant Tavern on the Green, with its six elaborate dining rooms and 10 miles of white Christmas lights wrapping trees out front, will sadly twinkle no longer. The restaurant is closing its doors for good on Dec. 31, when its operating license expires. That New Year's Eve party will be one for the ages, but hopefully revelers won't be too destructive - the restaurant's ornate decorative objects are being auctioned off a few weeks later.

Tavern on the Green is a Central Park landmark dating back to 1934, when Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia opened it. In 1974 it was reopened after a $10 million renovation by the colorful LeRoy family, who still own it today. The LeRoys filed for bankruptcy after the city didn't renew their operating license.

Current manager, Jennifer Oz LeRoy, is named in honor of her showman grandfather, Mervyn LeRoy, who was a producer of The Wizard of Oz. Perhaps as a way to seal the restaurant in history, Jennifer, along with Kay LeRoy, have written a 300-page book about the restaurant's history, including recipes.

Guernsey's Auction House is handling the sale, which includes decorative items from the 25,000-square-foot restaurant. Previews take place Wednesday, Jan. 6 through Tuesday, Jan. 12, noon to 8 p.m. each day. The public auction is Jan. 13-14 with 1 p.m. afternoon sessions and 6 p.m. evening sessions each day. The auction will take place in the Tavern's Crystal Room at 67th Street and Central Park West.

Some of the items being auctioned include:

Antique Tiffany stained-glass lamp shades

large, art nouveau mirrors, etched glass and Venetian glass

Baccarat crystal chandeliers

copper weathervanes

stone sculpture

garden furniture

Japanese lanterns

china place settings, silverware, glassware and linens

canvas murals from the walls

holiday decorations

outdoor topiaries

But don't rule New York out completely - it's one of the the most festive places to ring in the New Year. Just shy of hiring Ralph Lauren himself, the company went so far as to hire a Tocar Interior Design, a firm started by two former Polo executives.

Marina was designed to carry 1,258 travelers and the boat's filled with high-end details not usually found on cruise ships, like a grand, Lalique-designed grand staircase, stained-wood paneling, marble and granite surfaces, wool carpets and leather armchairs. The ship has 10 dining venues, a variety of bars and lounges, a full-service Canyon Ranch SpaClub, fitness center and more. The ship is just now being built but Oceania Cruises will start taking reservations in January 2010.

Gallery: Oceania Cruise's "Marina"

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Oceana Cruises to Offer Ralph Lauren Appointed Suites originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 21:01:00 EST.
