Although slightly less portable than everyone's favorite gadget today, Microsoft is rigorously positioning its concept device for the kind of widespread consumer - and commercial - craze that only Apple have been able to drill up. As you can see from their flash video, good ol Gates and Co want every last one of us to be able to use this touchscreen surface to do everything - from consumer applications like organizing and sharing photos, music and video - to consumer uses like in-restaurant ordering and bill paying.

If you're as awed by this as we are, check out the hands-on demo over at Engadget!

Microsoft Surface originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 31 May 2007 10:03:00 EST.

If you're anything like us, you probably appreciate the convergence of art and science slightly more than the average Joe; there's just something extra appealing about sleek, aesthetically attractive representations of the hyper-complex. We found some of this cool 'DNA Art' a while back from a company called DNA11, but it seems they're finally being challenged from the Brits at DNA ART UK Limited. They'll run your DNA as a graphical interpretation (the method that seems to have been popular in the past), but they'll also etch out every letter of your DNA code into a cube of crystal. A little more unique than that Van Gogh print you've had on your wall since college, eh? Just be careful if you're a wine mogul using your DNA to protect your cellar.

New DNA Art from the UK originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 17 May 2007 14:05:00 EST. Unfortunately that's about the only thing worth mentioning on this Transformer-esque monstrosity.

It's done up in true "Pimp My Ride" fashion, with 27" Lexani wheels, a giant speaker-and-LCD-filled rear end, completely redone interior (the red leather seats remind me more of a 1977 Lincoln than a 2007 model) and two automatically rising champagne flutes for the backseat passengers (this is cool only because Maybach did it first). Turns out this is what happens when you give an otherwise decent ride to a bunch of over-hyped, under-qualified wrench monkeys. More plus pics after the jump.
Continue reading Galpin Brings the Ugg, Makes Xzibit Proud

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Galpin Brings the Ugg, Makes Xzibit Proud originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 22 Feb 2007 14:04:00 EST. The vehicle is, as PopSci writer Gregory Mone puts it, "Half powerboat, half plane, and all agility, this craft dodges waves by hydroplaning above them." At speeds exceeding 100mph, it's claimed to get you, in complete comfort, to your destination as fast as a helicopter, but with the ease of operation of an offshore speedboat. Could this be a nod at the long-whispered blue highway? Check out pics of the 2006 sea trials after the break.
Continue reading Sea Phantom Finally Getting Real Cred

Filed under: Yachts & Sailing, Wings

Sea Phantom Finally Getting Real Cred originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 21 Feb 2007 20:06:00 EST. Some packages include stops at high-end hotels and spas in traditional cities, whilst others cater to a more rural-minded crowd with stops for dinner at a former convent and a farmhouse. Oh, and don't worry about trying to fit your bags in the little red hotrods; a tour manager follows you via GPS and can even arrive at your destination ahead of you if you wish. The four day trip from Rome to Siena and back will run you and your shotgun buddy €4,300 each (about $5,700), but the deposit on the car will set you back €15,000 (or about $19,800) until you bring her back unscathed.
Filed under: Dining, Luxury Cars & Autos

Cart Across Italy in the Ferrari of Your Choice originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 21 Feb 2007 19:04:00 EST.
Samsung just announced that their crack team of millimeter-shavers has done it again with their new fangled "Ultra Edition 10.9" slider. Being two millimeters thinner than the company's previously crowned D900 and boasting quite similar specs - the 3.2 megapixel camera, along with 80MB worth of music/video internal memory (plus a microSD slot) - it looks like we're getting ever-closer to the much sought-after two-dimensional mobile phone. No price or availability yet, but our Engadget cronies predict we'll know next month after the 3GSM Congress in Barcelona.

Click through for more pictures of the Ultra Edition 10.9

[via Engadget]
Continue reading Thinnest Slider Ever: Samsung Ultra Edition 10.9

Thinnest Slider Ever: Samsung Ultra Edition 10.9 originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 22 Jan 2007 18:02:00 EST.
The LG KE850 PRADA became real today, the phone that LG is touting as the "first completely touch screen mobile phone," and is initially priced at €600 (about $778 US). The phone is due to hit "PRADA stores in the UK, France, Germany and Italy at the end of February and parts of Asia before March."

So sure, they'll beat the iPhone to market by a few months, but the two phones have little else in common besides their touch screen interface; the KE850 will have no usable internal memory for media (LG opts for a microSD slot instead), it won't have a native mail client or web browser, and it doesn't seem to support multi-touch capabilities.

Regardless, this thin, shiny, posh'd up beauty is launching in Europe as a tri-band GSM (no word yet on US release, but we'll sure let you know as soon as we do) and has a revised UI from their previously-reported OS X -like color scheme to a handsome, minimalist black and white scheme. Check out some nice real-world shots from our coz's over at Engadget and screenshots of the new UI from our friends over at Gizmodo.

[Via Engadget]

The PRADA Phone Goes Official originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 19 Jan 2007 14:01:00 EST.
Jaguar XF: The Next BondMobile?

Behold the supercar that very well may grace the silver screen in the 22nd installment in the Bond series: the Jaguar XF. Although a lot of this intelligence is speculation, it is relatively well educated speculation. Given the fact that Ford still has exclusive product placement rights for this next Bond film, one might presuppose that Aston Martin may want to continue their reign after the beautiful DBS aired in Casino Royale...However! It turns out Ford has placed the Aston Martin badge on the auction block, and it isn't expected to stay there long. So unless Ford wants to give up a 500GT (and really, I don't see Bond behind the wheel of a muscle car), I think we can assume Bond will be riding the cat in the next one. And what great timing too, as they've just recently released a ton of beautiful photographs, CG and sketches of the XF over at AutoBlog. I, for one, am rooting for her; and come on, who doesn't love to hear those crazy Brits say "Jag-u-ar"?
Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Jaguar XF: The Next BondMobile? originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 11 Jan 2007 18:02:00 EST. This monster boasts a 7,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, their new LCD backlight, blur-reducing "Motionflow" technology and a whole host of other next-gen performance specs that promise to make you feel like you're actually rocking the eighth Freebird solo in Guitar Hero II. The whole 19" touch-screen thing is obviously making it a larger-than-normal blip on the radar, but it also boasts some of the new-fangled tech specs we're starting to see more and more: AMD Turion 64 X2 dual core TL-52 processor and that sweet sweet NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600. No official word on price yet, but our sibs over at Engadget hypothesized $1799 - $1899 a while back (lots of cool pics there too).

Touchscreen Media PC originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 08 Jan 2007 10:03:00 EST. Rates for this one range from about $14k-$22k/person, depending on accommodations and group size.

So this spring break instead of the same old beach trip, grab your honey and 18 of your closest friends and go soak in some of that good old world charm in style!
Filed under: Dining, Luxury Travel & Hotels, Spas

Run Around Europe In Style originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 08 Jan 2007 09:04:00 EST.
The New York Times' writer William L. Hamilton's article "What Money Can't Buy" chronicles these rough-and-tumble times for the city's ultra rich. From Central Park-side real estate to 250mph Bugattis, it seems the recipients of this year's massive Wall Street bonuses may have a tougher time spending their newfound wealth than they may have hoped. Want a new Jeff Koons to grace your foyer? His next dozen pieces are spoken for. John Walker 1805 Reserve? The 45-year vintage (from distilleries that no longer exist) was supposed to be available already but now may never. Trying to get your hands on a "starter" jet - the Eclipse 500 or the Cessna Citation? You may find yourself waiting until 2010. And even if it's not superfluous luxuries you're after, it seems even upper-crust residences are becoming harder to snag; the city's top brokers are noticing that $10 Million dollar apartments are only going to buyers with $100M net worth, as co-op boards are expecting their tenants to be charitable enough to give away what they pay in rent every year. So, sorry Richie Rich, you'll just have to *gasp* wait your turn. Oh, and check out the link for pics of the Bugatti.
Filed under: Spirits, Luxury Cars & Autos, Wings, Art

$10 Million Don't Buy What It Used To originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 03 Jan 2007 12:04:00 EST. Erm, that is, the phones we've written about. So get out those check cards and make someone really happy this holiday season!

5. The world's first luxury phone company launched in 2002, the London-based subsidiary of Nokia called Vertu, and we loved what they've been doing. Not only do its phones boast superior electronics, but the shells aren't too shabby either. They say the reception is "as clear as a Mozart symphony," and they phones' near-indestructibility comes from metals like titanium and aluminum and precious stones like sapphire and ruby. These celeb-magnets run from about $10-$20K.
Continue reading The Most Expensive Phones of 2006

The Most Expensive Phones of 2006 originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 11 Dec 2006 08:09:00 EST. To commemorate the 1 millionth Yepp YP-Z5 unit sold, the company and interface designer Paul Mercer (he also designed the iPod's 'face) are auctioning off 10 of these 18k gold bars, which are predicted to net over $1,000 each. Go for it, if you're in Korea.

[Via Engadget]

Samsung Sells A Million Yepps, Drops Next 10 In Gold originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 05 Dec 2006 14:01:00 EST. Posh looks and brains to boot? Heck yea, says Pentax; the company's celebrating their 60th anniversary by combining high-end style with high-end functionality with their new gold-plated ASAHI PENTAX LX Gold. We've recently seen wooden and diamond-crusted shooters, but this puppy comes with some new specs for actual photographers; not only is this SLR covered in 18 carat gold and brown leather, but the camera boasts the "world's first" completely dust-proof and water-proof SLR case design. And just to be safe (or, as it were, a bit more posh), the camera comes complete with a wooden box with red lining and white silk gloves to handle the camera without leaving fingerprints on the sensitive gold plating.

Pentax 60th Anniversary 18ct Gold SLR originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 22 Nov 2006 08:02:00 EST.
Wow. I mean Uber-Wow. We've seen our cronies over at Engadget report on a range of ridiculously cool holographic technologies lately, but nothing this big, impressive or, most importantly, actually available. What's being dubbed the "Uber-Graph", this 80" pane of glass acts as a medium for a holographic projection television, and is completely customizable to the buyer's specifications. The Uber-secret technology traps little bits of light at certain angles whilst all other light just passes through it. And voila, your image is floating in mid-air.

We don't know how much the 80-incher will go for (check out the eBay page here), but it looks like the 40-incher is retailing for £14,995 (about $28,500 US). And, if current market pricing trends are any measure, doubling the screen size can easily mean quadrupling the price. Which sucks, of course, for those of us who were otherwise really looking forward to a new condo this year.

Good find, BornRich.

80" Holographic HDTV is, yep, the first ever originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 21 Nov 2006 20:07:00 EST. So thank Mii Stor for finally pressing some ice into this 4GB USB flash drive, dubbed the "Snow". The case AND the chain are white gold, so you can be sure you won't be embarrassed when you hang this puppy from your neck with the rest of your uber-posh-gadgetry.
We've seen a few spy-shots of the new Lancer, but today we finally get to see the concept artist's sketches for what some are calling the most important design in Mitsubishi's 90-year history. With a posture very near to the ground, it's relatively long hood, a mean "shark nose" and uniquely deep "eyes", it's very attractive even if it doesn't blow the lid off of emblematic designs of Ferrari or Lamborghini. The notable bit is, instead, it's ambitious design/marketing theory - called "Project Global" - that will end up putting this car on the international radar after it debuts in Detroit. We wouldn't be surprised if certain German auto makers adopted this theory in the near future, leveraging this "flexibility required to accommodate regional needs and regulations as well as market trends and new customer demands in markets as diverse as Japan, North America, Russia, Asia-Pacific and Europe."
Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

The Lancer Goes Global originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 10 Nov 2006 18:01:00 EST. While this may prove more of a dorm-room gimmick a few years down the road, Tokyo companies are hoping to use this technology to monitor the atmosphere inside branch locations without actually installing Big Brother.

Thanks to our pals over at Engadget for the heads-up!

The $3,000 Mood Ring, er, Tube originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 09 Nov 2006 20:04:00 EST. Very little is known about the super-car's engineering at the moment, but as Aston Martin Design Director, Marek Reichman, puts it, "This car encapsulates a link between our elegant DB9 road car and the powerful DBR9 race car", so it's safe to assume that it'll easily allow Bond - James Bond - to save the world with his usual style and grace. No word on the car's price or availability, but in the meantime you can start polishing your secret agent demeanor with Casino Royale Spy Gear.
Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Aston Martin DBS - The New BondMobile originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 09 Nov 2006 19:04:00 EST. The building certainly plans to succeed in said wooing, having already committed upscale restaurants and posh shops to its street-level real estate. And if you're after one of the building's signature "Summit" penthouses you'd better come with your thinking cap; the $3 mill+ price tags include a personal architect to help you customize your very own 6,000 ft floor plan.

The Nicollet to Slice, Not Scrape originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 09 Nov 2006 08:02:00 EST. Check out these luxury villas from Rincon Careyes on Mexico's pacific coast - it's like Robinson Crusoe meets Donald Trump in a secluded, tropical fantasy land that prides itself on maintaining the highest standards of extravagance while still giving their residents a sense of intimacy with their exotic surroundings. Their empty lots start at $475k, but be sure to check out the 3-acre private lot "La Playa"; with multiple, interconnected dwelling units (many open-air), this $6m property certainly threatens to rip you out of your 80 hr/week Wall Street gig. It's more fun to climb palm trees than corporate ladders anyway, right?
