The stripy colors are fresh and playful, and give the bag an 80s feel, but not overwhelmingly, like say, Zubaz (warning, may burn your eyes).

We also love the stroke-me texture, the black leather whipstitching at the edges and especially the long shape, which ensures you will actually be able to put things into this bag. This would be an easy go-to for grabbing off your shelf to glam up an outfit -- even your work clothes.

The Kooba Mila Clutch is available from Neiman Marcus for $325.00.

Kooba Mila Clutch, Handbag of the Day originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 17:03:00 EST.

While I was running around Amsterdam on Museumnacht (an annual event where museums across the city stay open into the wee hours), I found something for which I didn't know I was looking: the world's most expensive cocktail shaker.

The Boston Shaker, as it's called, is located in the gift shop of the House of Bols, a flavored liqueur company whose on-site museum/training facility is worth visiting -- they won the the Dutch Design Award for Best Exhibition & Experience in 2007 and you get to play "guess what flavor you're smelling." It's just across the street from the Van Gogh museum.

The Boston Shaker was created as a collaboration between The House of Bols and their neighbor, Coster Diamonds. It comes packaged as above, in a unique leather case designed and made by French family business Établissements Bernard RDB. The shaker itself is silver, 18 karat gold, and is encrusted with 480 brilliant-cut diamonds weighing 19.05 carats.

The price tag on this one-of-a-kind blinged-up barware is €35,000.00 or approximately $52,164.00.

This trip was paid for by the Netherlands Board of Tourism, but the ideas and opinions expressed in the article above are 100% my own.

The World's Most Expensive Cocktail Shaker originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 11:01:00 EST.
The Lauren Merkin Lotte Feather-Print Clutch is a bright, feathery bag without all the fuss.

Carrying around a clutch that is essentially handful of feathers is certainly glamorous, but it's not always practical. You never want to put such a bag down anywhere, lest the feathers get smooshed, and heaven help you if it rains.

This bag creates a fun, flirty feather look -- but the genius of it is the coloring. Not only is it pretty, but feathers this color don't exist. If the silk were printed with an attempt at real-looking feathers, it would just look fake and half-hearted. Well done, Lauren Merkin, for making this soft silk print look intentional and classy.

This gathered, snap-flap, 6"H x 11 1/2"W clutch is perfect for a night out or a dinner party at a friend's place -- the teal is a perfect accent for a dark ensemble.

The Lauren Merkin Lotte Feather-Print Clutch is available from Neiman Marcus for $200.00.

Lauren Merkin Lotte Feather-Print Clutch, Handbag of the Day originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 19 Nov 2009 17:03:00 EST.
Oops -- I bet Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise didn't realize that "Suri" means "pickpocket" in Japanese, "horse mackerels" in Italian and "turned sour" in French (via Reuters). There's a British company called Today Translations whose luxury service could have helped them avoid the unfortunate situation.

For £1,000 (approximately $1,675.40), they'll check potential name disasters in 100 languages or more (at an additional cost, of course). They intend to attract celebrity clientele, whose celeblings often become international travelers before their first birthdays. Tom and Kate could have checked a hundred names without feeling a cramp in their coffers.

Who knows, Suri may be able to pull off "Pickpocket" ... it's actually kinda cool, but if you want to avoid embarrassing your future children. check out Today Translations.

Your dress may be an inexpensive LBD from a discount shop, but no one will notice if you're wearing fabulous designer tights.

This holiday season, times are (ugh) still tight, but the opulence and flashy glamour of the 20s and 30s speakeasy culture are in. The way to follow the trend without breaking the bank is to focus on your accessories: make them as eye-catching as you dare. Textures, dark jewel tones, and all things that sparkle are your friends, and we just love these Cynthia Rowley tights.

Also, as with other accessories, you can get them for a far more frugal price than, say, a Cynthia Rowley dress. The tights range from just $15 for Antique Dot Tights to $250 for the breathtaking Embellished Tights shown. It's a smart way to buy into a designer who might otherwise be out of your budget.

Now, go spend your money on presents!

Cynthia Rowley Legwear is Hot originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 15:01:00 EST.

On my recent visit to Holland, sponsored by the Netherlands Board of Tourism, we ventured up to The Hague (Den Haag) for the Dutch Fashion Awards and some museums. Though it wasn't originally on the itinerary, everyone on the trip was dying to see the Escher Museum (Escher in het Paleis).

The museum is located in the royal Lange Voorhout Palace, and features well kept original fixtures as well as several rooms dedicated to showing what the winter palace of Queen Mother Emma used to look like. Since then, the legendary Dutch graphic artist who's still blowing our minds almost 40 years after his death has been moved in, and the juxtaposition of decadence and mind-bending art is surprisingly harmonious.

If you're taking a trip to Amsterdam, a 45-minute trek up to The Hague is worth it just to see the museum, which not only has a far more extensive Escher collection than any of us believed was possible, but which also features a stunning array of crystal chandeliers in almost every room.

The chandeliers, like the enormous "Rain Cloud" in the foyer (above), are all works by Hans van Bentem (1965), a ceramics and glass artist from Rotterdam who happens to have a penchant for designing elaborate and unusual chandeliers. How unusual are they? Check out the gallery for a crystallized firefly, shark, trophy, umbrella, seahorse and more. The Hans van Bentem chandeliers are an exhibit all their own, and have appeared in the museum's formerly royal rooms since 2003. This is the full collection:

Gallery: Hans van Bentem Chandeliers at the Escher Museum

This trip was paid for by the Netherlands Board of Tourism, but the ideas and opinions expressed in the article above are 100% my own.

The Glorious Chandeliers of the Escher Museum originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 11:01:00 EST.
This Thursday, November 19, is the date of the annual sexiest night of the year: The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. It's taking place at the Lexington Avenue Armory in NYC, hosted by mama Heidi Klum (right), and do you know what cocktail they'll be serving at the after-party at M2? You're about to.

The Stoli Angel Elixir has been specially crafted for the event and will be available at M2's official Victoria's Secret Fashion Show After Party. This is a must-have for any viewing soiree (the show will be aired on CBS December 1), and we've got the recipe:

Stoli Angel Elixir
1 oz Stoli Gala Applik
3 strawberries
Sprinkles of vanilla sugar
At just $3.50 each, this is one of those luxuries that won't break the bank.

Amron, who also brought us the black leather bandaids this past summer, has a number of cool and outside-the-box usable-art ideas on his website. We also love this wine stopper, which looks like a talon digging into your bottle. Very goth chic.

The Keybrid originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 14 Nov 2009 11:02:00 EST.

When you're throwing a lavish Thanksgiving dinner, it's good to keep some things simple. The decor doesn't have to be over the top; anything too fancy may appear to be "trying to hard." There are two things to splurge on: The drinks and the food.

While there are endless options for amazing wines and and fabulously presented after-dinner drinks (red lacquer Grand Marnier bottle, anyone?), the main dish says the most about the dinner.

So, what's a luxury turkey? Bypass the supermarket and go for the gold: Designer turducken.

Chef Ryan Farr and San Francisco's chic 4505 Meats have teamed up to create a a totally mouth-watering combination of turkey, duck and chicken (above) which "comes on a bed of root vegetables in a roasting pan and includes an electric thermometer with a preset alarm on it, making it simple for home cooks to follow the directions and pull the bird from the oven when the thermometer beeps." If you're in SF, you can order one from 4505 Meats for $200-$225 (15 or 20 pound turduckens, which will feed 14 or 18) and pick it up in the Portero neighborhood or have it shipped (at an additional cost); just get your order in by November 20.

If you're not in San Francisco, there are a number of other websites where you can get a perfectly good turducken, including cajungrocer, herbertsmeats, or you can even hit up Sam's Club for Tony Chachere's(R) Cornbread Turducken at a delicious price (but you didn't hear that from us).

For a holiday like Thanksgiving, it's a good idea to let the meal speak for itself. If everyone's enjoying the food, nobody's talking (and nobody's fighting).

The Ultimate Thanksgiving Turkey originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 13 Nov 2009 16:01:00 EST.
The Truth About Caviar

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Her Deepness, legendary ocean explorer and marine scientist Sylvia Earle about the state of our oceans, and the conversation took an unexpected turn: we talked about caviar.

While we enjoy reveling in all things luxury here at Luxist, occasionally, it's a good idea to step back and take responsibility for our impact on the world around us. Luxury doesn't have to mean unsustainability, and those of us in more privileged positions have the opportunity to effect change and set a good example for future generations. That's why I want to tell you the truth about caviar. As Earle herself said, "Not knowing that you have a problem is the worst problem of all."

Luxist: Is there a certain kind of caviar the eco-conscious should choose?

Sylvia Earle: Well, consider what caviar is; fish eggs. Some people are raising sturgeon to extract the caviar, but it takes about 20 years to get an egg; to grow a mature female sturgeon that can have eggs of her own. And we don't raise 20-year-old chickens to get their eggs. Sturgeons can be 80 or 100 years old when they are taken out of their natural systems and carved up for caviar. The reason that caviar is increasingly rare is because the sturgeon are increasingly rare. There are very few remaining, even in the coastal waters of the United States. Chesapeake Bay used to have sturgeon. There was native sturgeon in Florida. There are precious few remaining.

L: Wait. They "carve them up" to get the eggs? They don't lay the eggs?

SE: Oh no! They take the adults and slice them up and remove the eggs. And sometimes they eat the fish, too, but it's ... it's like cutting old growth [such as centuries-old trees in the rainforests]. It doesn't make any sense. And the big, old fish are the ones that are the best reproducers. Only an old sturgeon will have eggs, and the older they are, the more eggs they produce. It's just kind of insanity, it shows how little we appreciate the investment that it takes.

While having access to something difficult to get can feel like a luxury, as Earle points out, "It doesn't make any sense." We've come to appreciate that ivory, for example, is not necessarily the height of luxury. While it's rare, it's often perceived as being in extremely poor taste, as our elephant populations dwindle. Perhaps it is time to adjust our thinking about caviar, as well, and to consider why things become so expensive and exclusive -- sometimes, it's because the way the product is being created isn't sustainable. Is it really worth carving up a 20 to 100-year-old sturgeon for a ten-minute appetizer? Other caviars are no different.

Our intention in publishing this is not to guilt trip anyone, but to provide the tools for all our readers to make informed choices. Now you know.

The Truth About Caviar originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 13 Nov 2009 14:01:00 EST. The Rebecca Minkoff Morning-After Mini Satchel is great for the morning after, true, but we think we'd carry it around all day.

First of all, we love this pick-me-up shade of blue (it's called "Deep Turquoise" and thankfully it's not at the green end of that color range). We can't think of a person who wouldn't be flattered by this color -- wouldn't this look great with your hair? We bet it would.

The shape is simple and attractive; we love the boxy look. At 8 1/2"H x 13"W x 7"D, it's not big enough for your portfolio, but it is big enough for your toothbrush and a change of ... socks (nudge nudge wink wink).

The Rebecca Minkoff Morning-After Mini Satchel is available from Neiman Marcus for $550.00.

Rebecca Minkoff Morning-After Mini Satchel, Handbag of the Day originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 04 Nov 2009 17:04:00 EST.

The Ritz-Carlton has something new up its sleeve: a collection of smaller, unique, boutique-style hotels in stunning natural locations. The first Ritz-Carlton Reserve will be opening December 22, 2009 on Phulay Bay in Krabi, Thailand.

"Ritz-Carlton Reserve will feature signature, one-of-a-kind boutique resorts positioned in unique settings, each with a distinctive personality and sense of place reflecting its history and culture," says Simon F. Cooper, president. "Phulay Bay in Thailand is a natural choice for the first Reserve."

Why? Because it's awesome. Phulay Bay, on the Andaman Sea, is surrounded by rocky forest hikes with hidden waterfalls and sandy beaches. From the resort, you'll be able to fly around the coast via sea plane, take a meditation class with local monks, ride elephants and visit ESPA, the swanky new spa. Can you think of anything else you'd like to do on your luxury vacation? Just let them know; they'll figure it out.

"We want guests to enjoy and discover the extraordinary diversity and beauty in this part of the country in a setting of relaxation and rejuvenation," says Estelita Sebeto, the resort's General Manager. "We have worked with nature to maintain a setting that evokes the very best of the natural environment of the hotel and sourced local and sustainable materials in its construction and styling. We see the resort as an ambassador for the local environment and for the tradition of the land here in Phulay Bay."

The fabulous boutique hotel and 54 adjoining villas comes with extra-special service, so the price is extra-special as well. The rooms start at approximately $582.18 per night, and the villas at $809.99.

Visit the website for more information or to book.

Ritz-Carlton Reserve - New Concept Unveiled in Thailand originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 04 Nov 2009 09:02:00 EST.
The hit HBO vampire series True Blood has a terrific new collection of modern goth jewelry designed by Udi Behr (right), the Chief Designer for Love Peace and Hope. We attended the launch party for the fierce new True Blood line and chatted with Behr himself about all things jewelry and vampires. Read the interview to find out why Udi Behr wants to be a vampire, and then check out the gallery of the sexy bling True Blood inspired.

Luxist: Do you like True Blood?

Udi Behr: I love True Blood! I don't do anything I don't love.

L: What's your background? Where are you from?

UB: My background is very confusing. My father is Dutch, my mother is English, and they met in Israel, so I was born and raised in Israel. I moved to New York 26 years ago on Halloween Day.

L: Perfect.

UB: My first night in New York was the Village on Halloween night.

L: How old were you?

UB: I was 23.

L: Oh my gosh, that must have been the best night of your life.

UB: Exactly -- if you ask me what happened, this is all because of that first night in New York. I blame it all on the first night in New York! I live near the village today, and I still remember what I saw 26 years ago, but I don't remember what I saw last year.

L: So your True Blood designs are based around the infinity symbol?

UB: The infinity symbol and two fangs that link into it. If you look at my line, a couple of the specific iconic shapes are teardrops of blood with rubies, I'm doing the 8, eternity, and the chains. I use either leather or stainless steel, because vampires get very damaged if they wear silver, so, just in case Louisiana vampires or Texas vampires want to buy jewelry, tada! They can!

L: So, there's no silver in the collection?

UB: The rings are silver, and the earrings are silver.

L: So the vampires should shy away from those.

UB: Yes -- but there are people who want to protect themselves from vampires, too. Not all vampires are great. But, on a serious note, it's hard to manipulate stainless steel in rings, so all the rings and earrings are silver, and all the chains are stainless steel or leather.

L: So, who's your favorite True Blood character?

UB: That's a good question. Let's see, everybody likes Eric. Everybody wants to be Eric, he's the coolest vampire. He's so cool, you know? He's not in love, he doesn't want a girlfriend, and Tara, I like Tara very much, she's a really cool girl.

L: What do you think of her boyfriend?

UB: Well, for me, he just pisses me off every time I go to the gym. It's hard for guys to compete, you know?

L: I would imagine!

UB: I want to be a vampire. That's why I'm doing this. You sleep all day and you party all night! And you live forever! Only one thing: I like to go to the beach.

You can shop for Udi Behr's hot new True Blood collection at TrueBloodJewelry.com.

Gallery: Udi Behr's True Blood Collection

True Blood Jewelry Designer Wants to be a Vampire - Exclusive Interview originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 04 Nov 2009 08:02:00 EST.
Like this shoe? I hope you have an iPhone.

Mark Ronson collaborated with Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini to design this exclusive beaut for the launch of the new Gucci iPhone App, as well as a new Gucci pop-up shop tour called GUCCI ICON-TEMPORARY.

If you haven't heard of pop-up shops, they're designer stores which exist for just a couple of weeks -- sort of like a trunk show, only it's way more involved, and there's way more money involved, as they open up a whole store. Big name designers have been opening these kinds of stores all over the world.

GUCCI ICON-TEMPORARY will open up to the public October 24 in NYC on Crosby Street and peddle sneakers for just two weeks. The store will then tour to Miami (December 1st), London (2010) and Tokyo (2010). If you're in the US, one model of the Gucci Ronson sneaker collection will be available only to iPhone and iTouch users who've downloaded the Gucci App (click here, it's free).

The Gucci App also features music playlists by Ronson and Giannini, as well as access to the Gucci Little Black Book, which has "best-of information for hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs in more than 20 major cities around the world. Also included in this section is a list of Giannini's own favorite spots around the world," and the Gucci Music Channel.

We love it when music and fashion collide.

"I spent many many years as an avid sneaker collector, so I wanted to make sure these Gucci shoes were truly special, both from an aesthetic point of view and a collectible one," says Ronson. "Frida and I also agreed it was important for there to be a unique musical element to the project, so I'm going to be collaborating with artists, making limited edition tracks for each store opening."

The Gucci Ronson sneakers will come with their own exclusive packaging and a 12" vinyl record with tracks selected by Mark Ronson himself. Visit the GUCCI ICON-TEMPORARY website for more information.

Gucci's New Shoe - Available Only by iPhone originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 03 Nov 2009 22:02:00 EST. Not only do their items typically come in candy colors, but this bag has a utilitarian, grungy, urban look we're not used to seeing from the young (13-year-old), typically girly brand.

We're not sure we love it, but we're highlighting it today because well, it's interesting. The pieced-together leather, the rough-looking logo plate, the long, braided leather toggle ... what does it all mean? Is Juicy trying to be less cute?

The Bloomingdale's description says, "Juicy Couture's studded, distressed leather crossbody hobo adds a casual influence to your fall look." Hmm. Perhaps this is intended for the college freshman who want to serious-up (seriousize?) their style for that Women's Lib class ... but really, it's perhaps not all that well-executed. It's large enough for books and all (13"W x 15"H x 5"D), but is it kind of ugly?

Also, the name -- "The Juicy Couture Leather Lock-It Worth-It Crossbody Hobo Bag" is unconscionably long. It's like they couldn't quite decide what it was themselves. The whole thing kind of reeks of "trying too hard."

Vote, and tell us what you think in the comments.
Just looking at it makes us smile. It's large enough to hold entire bills and has six credit card pockets and an inside zip pocket for coins. You can use the 14" strap as a wristlet to take this out at night -- and ditch your big bag at work.

The pretty poppy print is adorned with an embossed poppy logo plaque, retro goldtone hardware and metallic leather trim. We love the "Backstage" name for it, as this is just the sort of thing we'd expect to see dangling from a runway model when she arrives for work or stuffed on the makeup table as she gets made up. The eye-catching color makes it easy to find post-show, too.

The drawstring closures are enhanced by a hidden magnetic snap, so even though it's a crossbody, you don't have to worry about pickpockets. Just worry about someone stealing the whole bag -- because it's gorgeous.

The See by Chloe Backstage Crossbody is available from Bloomingdale's for $470.00.

See by Chloe Backstage Crossbody, Handbag of the Day originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 31 Oct 2009 17:02:00 EST.

Shocking, isn't it? Most of us (myself included) thought this day would never come, but ... we actually like this purse hook. In fact, we love it.

When you have a luxury handbag, you don't want it on the floor -- it's dangerous and usually dirty -- but you don't want to cheapen its glamour by hanging it from something that looks like it came from the dollar store. Pavina finally has the solution with its line of Handbag Holders, available for $45 - $68 from marlobrands.com.

Above is the Pavina Olivine, a perfectly lovely, $45 purse hook that finally does a little justice to our beautiful handbags. It's more like elegant jewelry than the plastic junk we've seen (and scorned) before. It's no wonder that Pavina already has quite a celebrity following, including Angelina Jolie, Nicole Richie, Alyson Hannigan and Gwen Stefani, among others.

The Handbag Holders are made to support up to 25 pounds, and have padding on their flip sides to prevent damaging any restaurant tablecloths or hardwood bars (see gallery). Each design is lead-free and handset with Swarovski crystals and semi precious stones.

We had to see it ourselves -- and try it out in several New York City restaurants -- to believe it. These Handbag Holders really are classic looking, unobtrusive, and while most people didn't even notice them, when they did, we got compliments. And our purses have never been safer.

Gallery: A Luxury Purse Hook?
Zara Terez is a young and fabulous handbag designer who we recently met at a Bagtrends event in New York City. She's shown here at right wearing one of her most exciting new items: the 14th Precinct Holster, which is part of her Fall 2009 collection (available here). We chatted with Zara about her fresh and fiesty line of handbags, including this gun holster she just couldn't resist.

Luxist: Tell us about the gun holster.

Zara Terez: Well, I actually saw a gun holster, and I thought it would be a really cool idea to make it into a handbag. It's good to go out with, and for mommies who have little kids, they can carry around their diaper bag and have their cell phone and their credit cards [in the holster]. And actually, my sister said that it's really good for exercising, like, you need a bag you can run around with.

L: So you are manufacturing them?

ZT: I am, everything's made here in New York City.

L: Is that suede?

ZT: This is suede, and we also have it in pebbled leather. All the leather comes from Italy; I bring it in.

L: Excellent, and how much does one cost?

ZT: $125. It's really, really fun, we have it in multiple colors, and you can use it day or night -- it's perfect for everything.

L: Tell us a little bit about these other materials you're using,

ZT: Everything is leather. Embossed snake, embossed croc, and what I love to do is, I make sure that there's always a ...

L (discovering the inside of a feathered bag): There are sequins in here!

ZT: Yeah! There's always a splash of surprise in each one. There's a surprise in every bag. It's really all about you, and what represents you as a person.

L: So, where do you get your inspiration?

ZT: My friends, my family, New York City as a whole. [The bags] are all named for different places in New York City. My holster's actually called 14th Precinct, which is the precinct in the garment district.

Check out more of Zara Terez's badass girly designs below:

Gallery: Zara Terez

Zara Terez and the 14th Precinct Holster originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 30 Oct 2009 08:01:00 EST.
I had never heard of Clara Kasavina when I met Clara herself (right) at a recent event for BagTrends in New York City. Now, I'm a little obsessed. It wasn't just the fabulous handbags which caught my attention, it was the amazing work they do with crystals. I can't wait for you to look through the gallery and see the lavishly encrusted minaudieres and accessories, but first, here's a bit more information.

Clara and her husband Misha have been making handbags for 15 years. Clara designs the bags -- with resplendent taste -- and Misha is the model maker, whose superb craftsmanship is evident in each of their stunning final products.

The bags are made in a variety of jewel tones with different shapes and materials. "Usually we choose to match our python, so we have it in the python, we have it in satin," said Clara. Their other unmistakable feature is their dynamic and opulent use of Swarovski crystals, packed tightly but unevenly, like a mosaic. "They are like a skin almost," explained Clara, quite rightly. The result is bags and accessories with an extremely opulent vintage feel -- your bag may be new, but it looks like a hand-me-down from Princess Grace.

We see a lot of handbags, but we rarely see old-school glamour like this, and with the season's return to flashy, speakeasy styles, you'd be smart to pick up a Clara Kasavina for the holidays.

Gallery: Clara Kasavina

Clara Kasavina - This Stuff is Gorgeous originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 07:01:00 EST.
David Yurman opened up a brand new "shop within a shop" at the iconic Bloomingdale's on 59th Street in NYC last week. Located right on the mezzanine with the cosmetics, the new David Yurman 775 sq. ft space is completely separate in design from the surrounding department store fluorescence. The opening party included not only David and his wife, Sybil, but members of the board at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, as a portion of the proceeds from the first week of the new shop will be donated to The Society of MSKCC.

The opening was an absolute madhouse (which is what happens when someone shows up at Bloomingdale's with free champagne), and definitely got the word out about David Yurman's new home at Bloomingdale's. I managed to pull the charming and jovial David Yurman himself away from the masses of adoring women for a quick interview about the new shop, working as a husband and wife team, charity and inspiration.

Luxist: So, why a shop within a shop?

David Yurman: Oh, why not? We've had a smaller shop here [at Bloomingdale's] for about six years, but this is the biggest shop [within another shop] we have, probably, in the world. We have our own ceiling, we have our own video ... it's as large a size as I would imagine I would want.

L: And did you design it yourself?

DY: No -- well, I designed it with Michael Gabellini. Originally we designed the furniture, the show cases. We worked for about 5-6 months with Michael -- great designer, great person to work with -- sometimes it can be difficult; two creative people with their concepts, but to me, [the shop] is like, warm, minimal, not even minimal. Warm modern. Very functional. I mean, we used oak, solid black walnut, and it's connected to our flagship, which opened in March. Not all our stores look alike. We have five different looks in fifteen stores. This is our new design and we love it. It will be here, it'll be in our flagship, we're opening up in Paris in March, but this is -- I call it 'the pavilion.'"

L: It's a pavilion within a shop.

DY: It's a pavilion within Bloomingdale's!

L: You work with so many charitable organizations -- what's your philosophy as far as giving back?

DY: It's actually for my parents. If you have enough, you don't need any more. What's enough? I mean, I definitely have enough, so, we give back. It's the DNA of our family. I mean, I was giving back on Saturdays when I was in high school. Or, three months every year, the last few years of high school, I worked at the MS Center, I worked with underprivileged and handicapped children.

L: Sounds like they raised you well.

DY: They told me giving back, working, being with people is just .. I would never [have done] this, personally. I wanted to play football, I wanted to hang out at the mall -- but it was the best thing I ever did. It's such a good feeling.

L: What's it like working as a husband and wife team?

DY: It's difficult and rewarding. We have a lot to talk about.

L: Who does what?

DY: We make one person. Sybil's probably more focused on marketing, but I weigh in on marketing. I'm more focused on design, product development.

L: She weighs in on that?

DY: She weighs in on that. Nothing happens without both of us signing off. If we don't both sign off, it doesn't happen. We've been married for 39 years.

L: What are you working on next?

DY: It's hard to describe in words, but a lot of extensions, evolutions. We're doing a lot more 'younger,' our son is doing the men's and watches, and bridal and also the high jewelry which is amazing materials, great design, and it's where he's growing in our business. It's a family.

L: And what keeps you inspired, where you you get your ideas?

DY: You know, the thing with the word 'get' -- you can't say 'get ideas' because you kinda make yourself available to them. It's a river, you sort of guide yourself.

L: So you're just open to [ideas], you don't go looking for them?

DY: No, I don't look -- well, I'm not blind. I look at women, like I was liking [a nearby woman's] earrings ... those are my earrings! Ha! I was saying I liked them, and they're mine.

He certainly is friendly and entertaining -- and it was hard to keep the ladies from ambushing him mid-interview! Be sure and visit the new David Yurman space next time you make it to Bloomingdale's in NYC, it's like a breath of fresh air amongst the fragrances -- and, of course, the jewelry is fabulous.

David Yurman at Bloomingdales - Exclusive Interview originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 28 Oct 2009 09:01:00 EST. We love this bag -- the sturdy framing at the top, the gold hardware and logo plate, and the way the handle is positioned so as not to allow gravity to disrupt the shape of the bag.

At 8"H x 10 1/2"W x 6 1/4"D, this is not the bag to lug all your things to work -- the size insists that you only use this for play (but it's still roomy enough for all your makeup and even your camera). This roomy hobo may look like it's covered in metallic chains, but it's actually chain-woven black metallic leather. How hot is that?

This metallic "Stephanie" number also comes in Silver and Gold, but we like the black -- a perfect, demure complement for all the 20s-style gear you'll be wearing around the holidays. The bright silver hardware is attractive and interesting, and the bag is lined in durable beige canvas. The texture makes this bag transition easily from day to night, even at 13"H x 17 1/2"W x 5"D.

The Diane von Furstenberg Stephanie Slouchy Hobo is available from Neiman Marcus for $875.00.

Diane von Furstenberg Stephanie Slouchy Hobo, Handbag of the Day originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 24 Oct 2009 17:01:00 EST. Judith Leiber has a habit of making minaudieres in interesting shapes, and this Italian-made 3 1/2"H x 3 1/2"W x 3 1/2"D sparkler may be our favorite one yet.

Covered in crystal rhinestones, this tiny case distributes light just about as well as any disco ball hanging from the ceiling, and will cause every kindred spirit in the room to search for the source of the glimmers and take notice of you. We also love the sexy tassel, which we think should be made a standard feature on all disco balls.

With this kind of opulence, you almost can't go wrong, but we'd especially love to see it paired with a white gown with silver and crystal detailing, a little black dress, or a pale cocktail number to emphasize the pretty crystals without making them look vulgar -- or too "retro."

The Judith Leiber Disco Ball Minaudiere is available from Neiman Marcus for $2,495.00.

Judith Leiber Disco Ball Minaudiere, Handbag of the Day originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 23 Oct 2009 17:02:00 EST. No offense to the King.

Item number 66 at Chicago auction house Leslie Hindman Auctioneers last Sunday was none other than "A Large Quantity of Elvis Presley's Hair." It went for $15,000 -- and Leslie Hindman told The Chicago Tribune she had expected it to go for a "bit more." The hair is allegedly from when Elvis had his locks shorn to enter the military in 1958.

That's some old hair.

Other items at the auction included Elvis Presley clothes, dolls, scarves and ladies' handkerchiefs which may contain some Elvis perspiration. The top seller was an "EP" monogrammed white cotton shirt which went to superfan John Urso for $52,000. "It's worth every penny," he told The Chicago Tribune.

The King of Rock and Roll may be dead (maybe), but his DNA still commands a pretty penny.

If you haven't seen "Paranormal Activity" yet, beware -- SPOILERS AHEAD.

In the film, the psychic tells Micah emphatically not to get a ouija board and try to talk to the demon tormenting his girlfriend Katie. Nevertheless, Katie comes down to their living room one day to find what she describes as something like the most beautiful ouija board she's ever seen. "I did not buy a ouija board," Micah says pathetically in his defense, "I borrowed a ouija board."

Most of us know ouija boards from our younger days. There's an innocent age when we're not sure what is entertainment and what is true -- dragons, princesses, witches, ghosts, magic, ouija boards; all of it falls into this strange, partly-fairytale partly-true reality, and because of that, it's all up for grabs. We'd play with the ouija board at sleepovers, freak out friends with stories of conversations with ghosts and pass along hearsay that people heard screaming when they burned their boards. Some of us believed the ouija boards were really a way to talk to ghosts, and some of us didn't, but the possibility that they could be a gateway to another dimension had us all fascinated, as well as good and scared.

I still don't know, of course, whether the ouija board is a subtle mind trick (ideomotor action) or moved by outside forces, but I know I don't care to touch one, with all the grown-up scary stories I've heard. I also remember a few times as a kid when things seemed a little too real ... no thank you. Still, I am attracted by their mystique, their arcane symbolism. There's a little goth kid inside me who thought that ouija board Micah brought home was pretty darn beautiful, too.

In the interest of that, let's have a look at some of the more fabulous ouija boards out there. There are excellent antique boards on display at The Museum of Talking Boards and Witchboards.net, you can buy gorgeous boards or have one custom made at DragonOak.com, and I found some pretty enchanting ones available for sale on eBay; see the gallery. Halloween's just around the corner if you're feeling spiritually curious (and brave). I've yet to see the release of the official "Paranormal Activity" board, but it can't be far off. Would you buy it?

Gallery: Beautiful Ouija Boards

Paranormal Activity - The Ouija Board originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 11:02:00 EST. Derreck Kayongo, a former refugee from Uganda, saw this not as hopeless wastefulness, but as an opportunity. The Global Soap Project collects these partial bars of soap, sterilizes and reshapes them and redistributes them at refugee camps in Africa. How'w that for thinking outside the box?

There are currently 40 hotels participating in the Global Soap Project, one of which is The Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead in Atlanta (above). The project is currently localized in Atlanta and serving Uganda, but both Kayongo and Ritz-Carlton manager Olivia Brown hope to expand it.

We at Luxist think this is a great idea and a great way to make hotels more sustainable!

Global Soap Project originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 15 Oct 2009 10:01:00 EST. According to Ducati, he bought the bike to "celebrate his return to the LA airwaves this fall."

If you missed Jones' last radio show ("Jonesy's Jukebox" on Indie 103.1, which he unfortunately had to fold when the station decided to turn Spanish-speaking only) he's in talks with other stations in LA, as well as Sirius, he told a reporter at this year's SXSW.

Jones told Ducati: "I've always admired Ducati from a distance but never found something that suits me. That all changed after that first ride on the Hypermotard. I knew I had to have her. All my mates are jealous -- and that suits me just fine!"

The Hypermotard S is a seriously stacked bike with advanced low friction technology which "takes the thrills and road holding to the highest level." More info here.

Sex Pistols Guitarist Steve Jones Splurges on a Ducati originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 15 Oct 2009 05:02:00 EST. The owl is just gently suggested by pretty cross-stitching, patchwork, and little beads.

This 13"H, 18"W, 4.5"D bag is also highly functional -- the perfect work bag for a day you need a pick-me-up. That means it has space for your wallet, your camera, your portfolio and yes, even your bowling ball. In fact, this is the kind of bag that looks cuter with more stuff in it, so stuff away.

What's really great about this bag, though, is how modern the hardware is. The leather-stitched gold chain compliments the classic gold tone buttons and makes it clear that you didn't get this from your grandma's attic (not that there's anything wrong with that).

The Chloé Bowler Chain Handbag is available from Intermix for $1,795.00.

Chloé Bowler Chain Handbag, Handbag of the Day originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 10 Oct 2009 17:02:00 EST.
Should you happen to visit The Lion City, there are a number of fabulous options available for dining. Whether you're looking for a classy place for a business meeting or a more romantic venue, we've got you covered.

Fine dining in Singapore is a major national hobby. As I commented in another article, 10 Things to Eat in Singapore, in most countries, people say: "Hi, how are you?" In Singapore, they say "Hi, have you eaten?" usually followed by "What?" "Where?" and "How was it?"

I was introduced to Singaporean fine dining by Les Amis Group spokesman Raymond Lim at their decadent Les Amis restaurant on Scotts Road (above is their Ciabatta wrapped crispy egg). The restaurant is very true to the French methods of cooking and presentation, but what makes the experience so unique is the Japanese ingredients. It's not quite fusion; they're just making French food with different raw materials -- the results are delicious.

Les Amis Group owns a handful of beautiful dining venues in Singapore, including French, Japanese and Italian restaurants (the most popular European cuisine in the country).
The Chloé Large Paraty Handbag is the perfect, simplified update to the Chloé Paraty Lambskin Shopping Satchel we posted in February.

While the bag stays true to the triangular theme of earlier Paraty designs, there's a lot less going on, and it totally works. The satchel's 5" handles are adorable and elegantly appointed -- we suggest removing the detachable strap. The contrast of the peachy pink color with the gold tone hardware reminds us of the 80s, in a good way -- it makes us want to put on tight jeans and frosty pink lipstick and go out looking for Richard Gere.

We just love the way this bag keeps its unusual shape and the softness of the monochrome leather. It also comes in a chocolatey brown.

The Chloé Large Paraty Handbag is available from Intermix for $1,995.00.

Chloé Large Paraty Handbag, Handbag of the Day originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 09 Oct 2009 17:03:00 EST.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is upon us, and David Yurman is celebrating (and supporting) by releasing these lavish pink dog tags for his Women's Tag Collection.

At left is the Pink Rhodonite and Sterling Silver Breast Cancer Dog Tag, which is emblazoned with the DY logo and costs $450. On the right is the extremely sparkly and eye-catching Pave Diamond-Encrusted model, available for $950.

These tags not only show your support for breast cancer victims and research, but they also have a great "I'm a survivor" vibe to them -- the dog tag theme is perfect. Never have pave diamonds looked so courageous.

Naturally, 10 percent of retail sales from these items goes directly to fund the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, so it's the perfect way to show your (actual) support, or to reward a survivor. Click here to purchase from David Yurman.

Pretty Pink David Yurman Dog Tags originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 09 Oct 2009 11:01:00 EST.
The Bally Slouchy Leather Hobo Handbag is an elegant, feminine purse with a lot of flirty details.

The gold rings which gather the strap, the knotted "sashes" on each side, the soft, buttery leather, the detail on the zipper pulls, the dainty Bally coat of arms ... what's not to love? As you might have guessed from that upper left corner, the bag also comes in black, with silver detail, but we especially love this in this supremely feminine, creamy white. It's the perfect antidote to all the dark colors we'll be seeing this season, and likely to be in style a lot longer. The details are simple, and the slouchy shape is likely to improve with wear -- just make sure you keep it clean.

It's larger than you might think; 20" wide by 12" tall with a 9" drop. The shape calls to mind the seashell-styles of the 1980s, but doesn't hit us over the head with it. Which we appreciate.

The Bally Slouchy Leather Hobo Handbag is available from Intermix for $875.00.

Bally Slouchy Leather Hobo Handbag, Handbag of the Day originally appeared on Luxist on Thu, 08 Oct 2009 17:01:00 EST. The purse has function as well as form; it's 8" tall by 12" wide. I feel like it's been ages since I've seen a clutch large enough to fit my wallet!

The Stella McCartney Studded Faux Suede Clutch is available from Intermix for $835.00.

Stella McCartney Studded Faux Suede Clutch, Handbag of the Day originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 06 Oct 2009 17:02:00 EST.
