Vena Cava Launches E-Commerce Site

vena cavaThe designers of Vena Cava are taking their DIY ingenuity online.

And it's only appropriate for a label that was formed when ambitious designers Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock got shut out of their Parsons School of Design senior fashion show. Unfazed, they hosted their own show and launched a label, instead. Four years later they were honored by Vogue and the Council of Fashion Designers of America and stars from Blake Lively to Rita Wilson don their designs.

Today the label, which is sold at fashion-forward boutiques and trend-setting Barneys New York, launched its own e-commerce site to sell directly to customers. Naturally, they're doing things their way.
In addition to the standard shop portion of the site, Mayock and Buhai employed their friends to model the clothes for different lifestyles in the vibes section. The Spring 2011 collection has inspirations for "nerd goddess," "black tie Che Guevara" (above) and "French student" (below) looks among others.

Another clever element the Vena Cava girls included is a curated garage sale section where they sell miscellaneous vintage goods. In some cases it's an accessory to be worn with their clothes, like an art deco necklace or southwestern belt, but more often it's a quirky conversation piece, like the geode in Lucite sculpture or the 1980s science magazines.

And to really get into the label's aesthetic, check out behind-the-scenes fashion week photos and music suggestions on their blog. How else will you know what to play while you're leafing through those old Omni magazines?
