Harris Manor Gets $1 Million Price Cut

Browsing through listings today I came across a price cut for one of the grand mansions of Brookville, New York. The area is home to many estates including this one, the historic Harris mansion. The 1929 manor house was built for Henry Upham Harris, a partner at J.P. Morgan. Architect Roger Bullard created the home which is made of stone taken from the excavation of New York City's subway system tunnels. The 31-acre property has a three-bedroom cottage, gatehouse, green house, pool and tennis courts. The main house has eight bedrooms. Listing pictures show carved woodwork details, stone floors and leaded glass windows. When it was our estate of the day last summer it was listed at $12.9 million but it is now a million less at $11.9 million.

Reminds me of a boy's school, library or church. I grew up next to a boy's school that resembled this home. All the neighborhood children were afraid of it because it was up on a hill and looked eerie. Way too gothic looking.
Great for making movies!

A million is a price CUT? I'm sure it's till too expensive. It's like so sales that only mark down what's already way overpriced. Check out Http://bit.ly/smartersavings if you want something actually reasonable.

It is a bit austere to be sure, but in my view there is absolutely nothing wrong with that when it comes to architecture. It isn't devoid of character and just an ice cold block of stone. Some homes clearly assume that tomb-like facade that makes anyone arriving wonder if they didn't drive to a crypt.
As I've commented before on this property, 'The Hameau', it is one of the finest designed and executed stone manor houses to come on the market in many years. Architect Roger H. Bullard's best work however is seen in either Rynwood (Banfi Vintners today) or Salutations (in Glen Cove) neither of which are apt to come on the market again. Regardless of those two homes this is one of his best works and a rarity for being in tact and containing the assorted outbuildings.
Unlike so many chopped up North Shore Gold Coast property the grounds here are extensive and beautiful. They were designed back in the day by two of the finest female landscape architects: Louise Payson and Ellen Shipman. Hopefully Oliver Grace Jr. will find just the right buyer appreciating such architecture and wealthy enough to keep it undivided.

Cheap at twice the price....

A home this lovely, upscale and only for a select clientele, should NOT have a cheap antenna hanging off of the one of the chimneys. At the very least, get cable, or find another way to utilize an antenna without disgracing the roof line and residence portfolio.

Why does it look like a parking lot straight in front of the house? Such land used for farmland ,a self sustaining estate, vineyards, orchards, gardens, sod rolled from grass fields.. old fashioned elegant ways clashing with tawdry frauds, I would hate to see white trash move in and pretend proper. Ways and places. Price of privacy.

What a dump. Just like the rest of the rotting estates in NY. Burn it down and build something worthwhile on the property.

Ohhhh, just read an ignorant post from someone who may be contacted for arson crime... what a low class mentality, as if you have been there, as if you could afford it. Even if you could, for all the historical urban districts needing repair, you would overstep your lines to damage what is not of your ways? That is why upperclass need fences to keep the likes of you away.

being able to afford it has nothing to do with this...its his opinion and he has a right to it...and clearly your wealth has gone to your head...

In my eyes its a pretty nice house...im mostly just laughing at all the comments of people arguing...who canres if your irch or poor? really nobody two sh!ts ..i mean..im say middle middle class...and you dont see me complaining about "white trash moving in " or "that one guy expressing his opinion but i dont think he can afford it so im going to be a total dickhead to him about it" come on now .

I think it is absolutely gorgeous. Well ok, the outside is gorgeous.. the inside would have to be remodeled it's a little too "old looking" for my taste, but it is history and you have to appreciate who built it and where it came from. but just look at the green hills and the grass, it's beautiful. But everyone does have a right to their own opinion and I have learned that everyone can look at the same picture and see it differently. Have a great day. :)
