Jerry Brown Chooses A Loft For His Governor's Residence
Newly elected (and former) California Governor Jerry Brown has chosen his new Sacramento home. Brown and his wife Anne Gust own a five-level contemporary in Oakland Hills but needed a new nest in the California capital. The Sacramento Bee reports that Brown and Gust will live in a one-bedroom unit at 16th and J streets, near the Capitol and across from Memorial Auditorium. The 1530 J St. building is a a renovated, one-time automobile dealership building which was constructed in the late 1920s. California is one of five states without a governor's mansion (Arizona, Massachusetts, Vermont and Rhode Island are also on that list). The former governor's mansion at 16th and H streets is now part of the California State Parks system and has been vacant since 1967.
The four-story building also known as the Elliot Building has two restaurants, P.F. Chang's China Bistro and Mikuni Japanese Restaurant, on the ground floor. Brown lived in an apartment on N Street when he was first governor, from 1975 to 1983. There are 18 lofts in his new building ranging from 695 to 1,493 square feet. Rents in the building start at a modest $1,700 a month and the new units have modern kitchens with concrete counters, stainless steel appliances and plenty of light courtesy of large windows. Listings for the units say that they also have a washer and dryer in unit but Brown may have to pay extra for parking. It's a step up from his first governor's residence but doesn't hold a candle to the extravagance of Governor Schwarzenegger who refused to move to Sacramento and commuted from the Brentwood area of Los Angeles via private jet.

"It's a step up from his first governor's residence..."
Hardly.
His old apartment on N and 13th is faaaaabulous. It's currently rented (but not occupied) by a Sacramento power couple, and I've been inside numerous times. Classic elevator, beautiful old moldings, grand in size, and not above a PF damn Changs.
Mr. Governor, give Rusty a call.

I've lived in CA forever and remember his first term very well. I'm not surprised at this governor's choices. He's not about flash or elegance and good for him. These are extremely tough times and I think this bodes well for CA.
Sam Dec 25th 2010 8:03AM
Oh really? Then it took Ronald Reagan to straighten the mess up. REMEMBER????
Comdukakis Dec 25th 2010 9:24AM
Wrong Brown. Reagan came after Pat Brown. Unless you are referring to Reagan being President when Jerry left office in 82.
Kathy Dec 25th 2010 12:36PM
I don't remember Reagan cleaning up any mess. He made a few though, and did not leave CA better off. He slept a lot during his presidency, an early symptom of his Alzheimer's I've heard... at the time we thought the meetings were just boring lol. I think he did represent us well in foreign affairs, he had that calm demeanor.

Well, IwasAmazedthey Elected this Very OldGuy..And that state couldn't come up with Someone Like Him,but Younger and more Attuned to current events and methods..
I bet they would elect Clark Gable ...
He has no Party or support in the State House, he's just going to be a Front Man and nothing will be done to Get that State "Back to The Future"..
I Suppose, they are hoping for a Big Bail Out from Washington..
(again)..
I hope they Get it, Since WE, here in the Midwest Don't want to have all those Mexicans ( Legal or illegal) comming here, Let Alone all those Movie Stars.
We went to California Once, all over it..From South to North.. borders.. over 50% of it is Desert and they want to live in those areas and want everyone else to pay for providing Water and Utilities so they can live there and foralot cheaper than we have to pay for our Utiliities..
and that Las Vegas? It's the Same thing.. they pay about 50% less for their Water and Electric there.. Somethings not right about that..
I'd Like to live in Northern Cal too with the Nice Weather, but reality is it takes $ to Live were you want, It takes having a Job and That takes having the Right Job Profession.. You have to live were you can make your living and raise your Family..
Same proble with allthose Wanting to Live In other nice areas, like Florida.. But if their aren't the Jobs, you don't try to force it to support you and ask for Handouts from the rest of the country so you can live there.

$1700 a month is modest rent??? for that amount here i could get a 3000 sq ft house with hot and cold running maids.
he still drivin' that rambler or what ever it was?
they didn't call him governor Moonbeam for nothin'.
Comdukakis Dec 25th 2010 9:25AM
That's part of the reason why I left California. Rents and housing prices were too high and I couldn't see myself and my wife being able to afford to buy in Sac.
Douglas Dec 25th 2010 8:07AM
You've got to love Moombeam in oh so many ways. If this doesn't speak volumes for the useless state of CA I don't know what would.
Patrick Dec 25th 2010 11:01AM
GBO, doubtful you into REALITY much showing by your "useless" reference to Cali which has been setting the "tone" that is followed by the coast to coasters and has economic status that supercededs some nations and stil ranked a top performer within our own nation !! The diversity must rankle you, it is "progressive" but perhaps best take a few hints at that which IS actually coast to coast despite those whimperings and and attempted clingings to nostalgically fantasized days of yore ..Progress happens, whether YOU particularly want it or not...time to get over it and thensome and work toward a greater common good for all rather than just select few !!
sk92014 Dec 25th 2010 1:41PM
Actually, your posting speaks volumes about you. Jealous?
Frances Dec 25th 2010 8:40AM
Sam, Ronald Reagan didn't exactly straighten out the mess. Reagan started the mess CA is in.
Kathy Dec 25th 2010 12:36PM
Please. So many comments by people who aren't/weren't here and don't even know what Reagan or Brown were like. I much preferred Brown, and his austerity was legendary. If his old flat is considered nice now it must have been fixed up, although I can believe it had old elevators and charisma. Reagan put mentally ill people out on the streets - the first homeless I ever remember. I liked him, but never forgave him for that. He was the teflon president for sure, he'd just shrug and act like it wasn't his fault. A genial guy.

Waiting to see if the moon beam has any balls to have all the contracts with the unions redone and put them all rpt all on 401k's.
Nick Gallicchio Dec 25th 2010 11:46AM
What are you another blame and complain person. Pointing fingers at union people is way out of line. Unions helped to establish the middle class, they are the salt of the USA.
Good old Republicans love to break up unions so we can be a two class society, the have's and have not's. Governor Brown will do what is right with ir without your mouth moving.
Congratulations, Governor Brown and a happy healthy New Year to you and your pretty wife.
Nick

If Unions are the Salt of the Earth we are in a whole lot of trouble. Thats why their memebers are at an all time low. They have chased business out of this country and that is a big part of our problem.
Kathy Dec 25th 2010 12:48PM
You know, I'm a union member since I'm a school employee. Benefits for my family cost me a lot, they have tripled to $928 a month. My retirement would be a modest $200-300 if I'd been working long enough for it to mature - not that common for classified employees. I believe I can get my contributions back from Calpers if I apply though. I do hope he straightens out the pensions, because I read about outrageous pensions for some cities and firemen and policemen, some of whom don't even contribute to Calpers? How can that be? I also am concerned about a shaky real estate investment deal they made and lost money on - after we'd been told how careful they were. I think someone does need to look into it, because every teacher and district employee contributes and so does our school district, and we're not talking huge pensions. How does the city of Oakland give police large pensions without them contributing? These questions need to be asked.
