Spindrift Lane, Estate of the Day

Today's home has had its cover moment on California Living & Home Style magazines for good reason. This home in Carmel, California is a stunner, a stone and glass main house perched on two acres facing the Pacific Ocean. The home has panoramic views from many rooms. Colorado stone and mahogany woodwork add to the home's luxe feel. It has Sub Zero appliances, four wood burning fireplaces, radiant and forced air heat, LiteTouch lighting, security, landscape lighting, stereo, Ann Sacks concrete counters, an elevator and more. The home also has a guesthouse with a stone fireplace and water views. There is an office overlooks the garden and the ocean. Another room offers space for a large gym or a converted bedroom. The home is listed at $12.5 million.

This one isn't bad, but nowhere NEAR as nice as the other home for sale in Carmel at the exact same price:

OMG. The one you linked to is HEAD OVER HEALS nicer and more spectacular than the EOTD.
I would MUCH rather buy a house where the updating has already been done.

Long time reader, first time posting in the comments. I've noticed a lot of hating on Deidre lately, but I think she does a great job with the EOTD.
The house you reference is nice as well, but she did it as the EOTD already.

For me, it's not "hating" on Deidre, lol. I enjoy her posting every morning.
However, she DOES have a tendency to show homes that are "dated" (and by that, I don't mean "older style" -- I mean homes that are 30-40 years old that haven't been updated (bathrooms, kitchens, etc.)).
She also almost exclusively features homes with wooden beams (as if expensive and/or good taste automatically meant beams).
I am one of many on here that don't care for the excess of beams in the featured homes.

I have to agree with Eric. Both are really nice, but the one he links to is much nicer in my mind.

Well, *this* Eric will take the EOTD. Larger property, more inviting.

Hmmmph...diff'rent strokes, I suppose. I'll take the EOTD, hands down. Architecturally, at least to my eye, today's is much more sound.

Wow, the other Carmel EOTD has been on the market for over a year and has dropped from almost $16 to $12.5M. I realize this is becoming more and more common, but it still amazes me that the real estate market is still in a free fall.
I hope I am able to afford one of these homes as they become 'bargains' before the market turns around again.
Both properties look like spectacular homes.

This estate is so incredibly beautiful. I love California-it's my main home! The views, all the glass to show it off and the interesting decor. It's really my taste.
With regard to Deidre, I recognize and honor the amount of effort she puts forth in her search every day. I could never be critical-in ANY way- of such expertise and monumental amount of work. I'd rate her work product an A+.
To have her only put forth perfect mansions with the upgrades in place would be boring to me. Most people cannot afford something like that anyway OR wish to renovate with their own particular taste in mind. To dream of doing just that is wonderful and more to the point, FUN.
All this discussion on what we all want brings forth the conclusion that we all have starkly different taste and desire in what we want to see here. We can and should be very flexible.

Here is my vote between this EOTD and the listing Eric posted the link to which is also in Carmel.
The one listed here by Deidre is my choice. Reason being the other looks dated with all that orange wood all over the ceiling and everywhere else. The home looks all aglow with an orange hue and it reminds me of the wood we had in homes in the 1960's. And, with all the reno my husband and I have done in all of our homes, I realize what it would take to even take half of it out. A major event.
The estate of the day here is modern and in a natural setting to my eye. I like seeing Pacific Ocean views but do not wish to be right on the water. I'd rather have some height and distance to my view of either water or mountains out here.
The West Coast is spectacular. All of it.

We are definately still in a free fall. It's amazing what you can buy for so little IF you have the funds.
Pretty scary times in real estate. Most of the agents I have known for years are now out of the business. Several have said it's because even if you can find buyers, the bank turns them down. Banks have such incredibly narrow views on who is a good risk.
I'm just sitting tight with what I own. But I am very tempted to buy more.

I happen to prefer this listing over the link. This house is more private and I like the sense of a more mature rugged setting. The other house sits right in the middle of a line of houses. I also like the stonework on this house. It feels warmer and more cozy to me. I would, however, happily live in either one.

Wow, this has generated more discussion on an EOTD than I have seen. Maybe Deidre should post 2 estates and encourage a discussion about which is the better choice. Maybe a poll?
Interesting discussion here.

That is a GREAT idea, Rod!

Deirdre does do a great job...most of the time. The biggest stinkers of late were B-list celebrity homes (Alan Thicke and the Dynasty woman). But I think I like Rod's suggestion. Once in awhile, it would be fun to debate between two similarly priced homes in close proximity to one another.
There are a lot of things that could be done. I particularly enjoy the "pricespotting" column on Curbed.com. Where loyal viewers like us get to guess the price of a home after seeing photos and floorplans.
Oh, that's brings up another point...I want to see floorplans! Floorplan Porn for everyone!!!

Estate of the Day is why I come to this blog and Diedre, in my opinion, you do an excellent job.
