New '50s-Inspired Shades from Dolce & Gabbana's Gold Edition

Last winter we wrote about the exclusive new collection of Gold Edition sunglasses plated in pure 18-carat gold from Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana. Now the duo has added some new designs to the luxe collection - whose fans include Brad Pitt – including two cool new Fifties-inspired styles (above) for Spring / Summer 2011. The slick shades starred in Dolce & Gabbana's Fall 2010 / 2011 men's fashion show in tribute to the 20th anniversary of their men's collections. There are two versions, one with rounded lenses and one square, available in black or tortoiseshell. Made in Italy, the sunglasses feature polarized glass, and a certificate of authenticity comes with each pair of glasses attesting to the originality, design and quality and the use of 18-carat gold. Each pair is presented in its own jewelry case featuring a plaque with the words "Dolce &Gabbana Gold Edition". Inside there is a portable case in black leather, decorated with a plaque and logo. The Gold Edition models are available at ILORI Luxury Sunglass boutiques with prices ranging from $490 - $580, except for the squared version which will be on sale exclusively in Dolce & Gabbana boutiques.

No offense to Dolce and Gabbana, but the style shown has been made popular by Ray- Ban for years. I would much rather buy myself a pair of Ray- Bans than these. Ray- Bans have been and will always be classic.

Gabby nailed it. I was a punk in the 70's and wore Ray Bans just like these, way cooler.....

Those sunglasses have been around so many times, we lost count.
rkniolek Dec 1st 2010 4:58PM
um these look more like late 80 early 90's to me
bestbunny10 Dec 1st 2010 5:22PM
Yes I still have my Ray Bans in a drawer. They were very popular about 8 years ago..and then went out of style. They look exactly like the doce ones. I am glad I kept mine. Time to wear them again...

This style of glasses ( whether sun or regular eyeglasses) weren't attractive then and they sure aren't attractive now. My Dad wore that God-awful style for years and it aged him. It actually made him look poor. Some retro looks should remain dead and buried.

they are identical to my Ray Bans from about 10 years ago. I still have them in a drawer. My kids stopped me from wearing them as they went out of fashion. Now I can wear them again. Get the same look for about 200 bucks.

My uncle had a sunglass business which sold all over ?Europe in the 50's and early 60's. These glasses were not from that era. In that era large bejeweled glasses with wings were the fashion.
ginniescat3 Dec 2nd 2010 5:28AM
You are absolutely right! I am 62 years old and that is EXACTLY what we wore, no only as sunglasses, but plain eyeglasses. They looked like cat
eyes and had wings and rhinestones all over the frames. I should know; I WORE them and so did my Mother
Philip Dec 1st 2010 5:31PM
Yup my ray-bans look just like those ; ]

New Collection??? they are copies, and bad ones at that. 80's design.

In defense of Dolce & Gabbana, the Wayfarer was created in the 1950s, and their 90s popularity is mostly due to creative product placement.
That being said, these glasses are nothing better than an expensive "Inspired Design"

Ray Bans have been my sun glasses choice ever since I was 13 years old.I'm 60 now and still wear Ray Bans.No other brand tops them.

They look like the horn-rimmed glasses that one of the main characters named Noah Bennet played by Jack Coleman from the now-cancelled show "Heroes" wore all of the time. It was his signature trade-mark for the show, called "The Man with Horn Rimmed Glasses" or "HRG" for short. He was a pretty in-depth character and I say if Dolce & Gabbana are trying to revive them, then I guess life (80's-90's) imitating life (Heroes), imitating art again (Dolce and Gabbana's re-introduction.) Good for them!

It's very obvious that those of you who think they're an 80s style aren't very old. They go back to the 50s and 60s. I thought they were dorky then, I think they're dorky now.
joshuagrant8 Dec 1st 2010 8:41PM
Those are from the 80's! Should have kept mine! 50's era were much cuter!
D sisco Dec 1st 2010 8:48PM
i got some sunglasses for 10 bucks and they keep the sun out of my eyes imagine that
H143 Dec 1st 2010 9:20PM
Those who believe the sunglasses resemble the 1980's have never seen photos from 1950's Hollywood.
acbobbyb Dec 1st 2010 9:27PM
I could care less what sunglasses are in style. If you have to know this PLEASE get an F**K**G life.
