Is this (or used to be) Pat Riley's house?
Rod Nov 22nd 2010 2:24PM
It wouldn't surprise me if it was Riley's. It has the look of an athlete/ex-athlete's home.
I didn't see anything that I would characterize as a 'sandy beach' though.
I like this one.

Wow. Very pretty place. Lots of glass and open & airy tropical views. Loved it! I was rather haunted by living on the peninsula when a hurricane came through.....
Postively NO protection in this home.

JLS,,,As a person whos lives 51 years on the water, you wrote exactly what I was thinking too. Its very beautiful,,, until a hurricane blows through. I do like it all, but its just a matter of time before it all blows away.

i lived all my life in South Florida. When a Hurricane comes just bolt shutters over the windows and head inland. Stuff Happens. Live!

In todays economy, I'll be happy to just hold onto my 3 bedroom ranch
mary Nov 23rd 2010 7:08AM
home is 20 yrs old and been thru a few hurricanes already, so you can see that it will withstand quite a lot of wind, one of the most beautiful homes you have displayed but who actually lives in homes that big? I wouldn't mind trying for a while but would feel lost.
carmen Nov 23rd 2010 8:03AM
The property and house size is irrelevant; how I'd love to spend my life lost in that luxurious tropical paradise.

I also was thinking this was Pat Riley's former home in Gables Estates. The place is magnificent and I would buy it in a minute if I had that kind of money. Loved everything about it!
Jim King Nov 23rd 2010 10:17AM
The place is "TackY" enough to be Riley's

I agree with Chrimini3....I love my three bedroom on 2 acres and in today's economy, I feel privileged to live in it without fear of it being taken away from me!

That home is worthy of a $20+M price tag, and the grounds are beautiful too. I think a Mediterranean build is pretty solid and now with that ballistic cloth that you can cover windows with, I think that house will withstand most Hurricanes...if not...if you can afford to buy it, you can afford to insure it.

Ok, Who does the cleaning and landscaping? Do they have live in help or does someone come by boat todo all the menial work? & who pays the taxes, what county would this "island " be in? & how do you support this kind of life style.
Debra Nov 23rd 2010 11:49AM
Wow, the taxes are nearly $258,000.00 a year and has to be paid by Nov. 30, 2010. It probably takes a half million a year in taxes and upkeep.
Love it though!

I’d love the island part. How often would you really deal with the hurricane issue? Some places I’ve seen, have metal that covers the windows, and bolts to the frame. Then a 3 inch steel wall that raises from the ground. Architectural Digest I think. It’s done in such a way that the cost is not as much as you’d think. Like a 5,000 sq ft 2-story home can be protected for $150K. And when you consider the property that’s not a bad amount to spend to protect that investment, and it would make resale easier, too.
Here’s a link to a home under construction on a private island on Lake Minnetonka just West of Minneapolis. 18,000 sq ft.

Cold instead of hurricanes, but still on the Florida property, I’ll bet that wouldn’t be an issue very often.
