Nautilus Island, Estate of the Day

In Maine's Penobscot Bay sits Nautilus Island, a private 37 acre island that has remained under the protection of one family for more than 130 years. The property includes a six-bedroom main residence, with stone piazza and pool overlooking the bay. The island has its own vineyard, a two-bedroom farmhouse, and a guest cottage that is located at the edge of the island's protected harbor with a pier and moorings. If you are going to be on your own island you might want your own bar-- the boat house has been converted into a gathering spot with a kitchen, bar, and stone fireplace for family gatherings. The property also has perennial gardens, tennis court, a barn for storage, and lighted walking paths. The $10.6 million list price includes most furnishings, ground equipment, and a 23' boat.

Amazing place, sure would have liked to have seen it.
Luxist the pics are horrible, not the few posted, just so few of them, whats up with that?I HATE to see a place like this, with all the beauty written in words and then be let down by not being able to see it.BOO !!!It's like having a big beautiful Christmas Present and opening it to find the box empty.

Or like unwrapping the Christmas present and find a single photograph of your gift. It's on order, and hasn't yet arrived, so they enclosed a picture.

Where are pictures of the bedrooms, bathrooms, and other outbuildings?
eric Sep 29th 2010 3:19PM
All to often, when there are few, or no interior pictures, it's an indication that it's a fixer-upper (or blower upper, lol). Hope that is not the case here.

You may just end up in a bidding war, if I had the money I would pay more than 10 mil for this place. Lucky people who get to buy this place. It's probably going to be some rich Arab.

re: pictures. In case its not painfully obvious Luxist obtains the photos for all Estate of the Day homes from the listing agent. In this case it is LandVest which is one of the best firms around, bar none, with their marketing, in depth listing detail, quality of inventory, and diverse New England offerings.
The property remains a summer rental and the seller (Paul Brouillard and his late wife bought the island 4 years ago) intended to make this a retreat / resort for artists. It further is supposed to be self sustaining as such it has gardens, chicken coop, and other food-destined animal housing. A vineyard is on the island too. Mr. Brouillard has indicated he'd like to stay on as a caretaker of sorts for the new buyer.
The property as a rental: http://nautilusislandmaine.com/
It is certainly an amazing offering with so much land, owning the entire island, a lovely restore old mansion done tastefully, and then numerous outbuildings and entertainment options. While very private it isn't so isolated that it would take hours to get to civilization.

Thanks for the info.
btw, think carefully about buying any property with the previous owner hanging on as a caretaker, or be associated in any way with their former place that you now own. It has the potential to get weird. Been there, done that.

This is a gorgious property and I'd love to live here but not for 10Mil. This place need work BADDLY! and so the price would have to be reduced accordingly.
Linda Sep 29th 2010 4:39PM
Well this one is certainly for the rich and or rich and famous. I wish................
Linda Sep 29th 2010 4:42PM
Well this is only for the rich or the rich and famous. Not for us poor working slobs. Oh well one can always dream...............

One question... Where does thier electricity come from?
TOMMY Sep 29th 2010 6:28PM
Most likely its fed in conduit from the mainland to a distribution panel outside the house then its fed to the other areas that have power, and they may have their own generator when its goes out fromthe mainland.
TOMMY Sep 29th 2010 6:18PM
Most likely the Island itself is worth more than half of that price. The house, pool , outbuildings etc. can't come up to 5 M
jbjg24m Sep 29th 2010 6:09PM
damn, now everybody knows where i live !
jbjg24m Sep 29th 2010 6:10PM
i just got back from my island thats close to this place !
Lori Austill Sep 29th 2010 6:55PM
I have a better idea....Mr. Brouillard can just marry me and we can keep the place, retire there, raise animals and enjoy the peace. :o)
Angela Sep 29th 2010 6:53PM
Pick it up and move it off the southern/southeastern coast, and Honey, I'm home! Well, except for the little detail of $10.6M. And that pinky-peach, salmon color would have to go. But in all honesty, I would be happy to have a sofa that doesn't sag. That's all it would take to make me happy because the one I have causes my spine to hurt more than usual. Ah, well. Sometimes even the little things cost too much, one way or another.
