Bentley Recalls the Flying B Hood Ornament

Ever take a look at a hood ornament and wonder what would happen if you got hit by a car with one? Some of the most upscale offerings from the likes of Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Jaguar offer them, but they're all designed to fold down or retract entirely in the event of a pedestrian collision. Apparently Bentley's having a little trouble with theirs, though, prompting the US National Highway Transportation Safety Administration to issue a recall on the famous Flying B.
The issue involves rust around the hood ornament preventing it from retracting in such an event. The recall affects less than 600 examples of the Arnage, Azure and Brooklands made between 2007 and 2009. Bentley's produced more than that many in those three years, but the hood ornament is an optional accessory that some buyers choose to do without. But if you've got one with it, you should be getting notice from your local dealership in short order with instructions on how to get yours replaced free of charge.

If I'm on foot and get hit by one of these 5000 pound cars (4000 for the Jags), I would think that the hood ornament would be the least of my problems.

Well Rob......it kind of would depend on exactly where the hood ornament ended up....ya know what I mean?

It would seem if one were a pedestrian who had been hit by a speeding Bentley, the retractability of the hood ornament would be the least of one's concerns.

I'm not concerned about these hood ornaments, but I'm looking forward to recalling the government in November.

What great news for the hundreds of pedestrians who will be struck by Bentleys this year alone. This is what our highway safety engineers are spending their time and research on?

.....B as in B....and S as in S ....if i got hit by a Bently ... i would be rich & i would buy a Bently ....and an extra hood ornament ... just in case....

hey, if I could afford to drive a Bentley, all those pedestrians better get out of my way!!
Annastasia Sep 29th 2010 12:20PM
Well, I do find this rule ridiculous. However, I think that no matter if is is retractable or not, that at least if I get hit by one of these expensive cars then at least I can almost bet it will be by an insured driver!!!!! lol Is this all these people can think of to get paid for??? Everyone should be so lucky to have such an easy job for such a unimportant problem. I agree, I do think that the hood ornament would be the least of your worries after getting hit by one of these solid cars....

Rust, rust on a Bentley, unheard of, it must be a mistake.
