Rusty Aston Martin Sells for £206,000 at Auction

The collector car market has spiraled to such an extent that seeing a car sell at auction for £206,000 (about $319k) barely even raises an eyebrow these days. But for that kind of money, you'd still expect the car to be in good condition, right? But that's how much one buyer paid recently for what is euphemistically being referred to as a "rolling restoration project" – auto-speak for a handyman's dream.
The car in question is a 1958 Aston Martin DB2/4 MkIII convertible. Or at least it once was. And when it was, it belonged to one David Brown, the former Aston Martin chief whose initials still adorn the company's svelte GTs to this day. Unfortunately the car sat in disrepair for 30 years since then, but after having been rediscovered was sold at auction by Barons at Sandown Park in Surrey, England.

Great find........And out in the open too (and not in the proverbial old barn)..........BUT what's behind the Aston?....An MGB-GT, that's what!!!!!
rick Sep 16th 2010 8:13AM
The MGB/GT is the 'poor man's Aston Martin, you know! :)
Wildman Sep 16th 2010 8:55AM
Rusted, yes. Junk, no.

Reading the link I clicked on to get to this article then reading the article, I find once again that whoever writes the links for AOL does not possess the reading comprehension of a 3rd grader.

You're absolutely right, Don. Suppose the restoration to 99 point condition takes one year and costs 6,000 man hours at $100 per hour. That raises the investment total to $919K. Even if it just brings $1.2 million at auction, that's a profit of 30% in one year. Alternatively, the super-rich owner could simply keep it and own one of the most highly prized collector cars in history. There are lots worse ways for a rich guy to spend his money.

I love cars, but my first impression of this car was that Columbo used it in the old television show.
jesse Sep 16th 2010 3:54PM
No Gary, Colombo drove a Volvo......I had the same one and it ran forever but the Bosch fuel injectors ( a new item in a 1960's vehicles) almost bankrupted me.

Had one of these back in the sixties.
Could not make that son of a bitcx run.
Kada Sep 16th 2010 10:47AM
It's disgusting that something like that is worth so much money.
Jon Benjamin Sep 16th 2010 11:13AM
Congratulations; you just showed your complete ignorance.

I've seen rusty cars. That car is NOT rusty. Unless it is all the undercarriage and interior, the car looks to be in a lot better condition than the article would have us believe.

Typical English car. Not worth a sh*t.

I had a 1968 MGB:
It was fun to drive, but needed much TLC. The clutch had a graphite throw out bearing. The engineers at BMC did some strange things!
Wayne Sep 16th 2010 11:36AM
Add another $200K and you will have a nice car worth about $300K.

Unreal! Is it made out of gold?
wclark8 Sep 16th 2010 12:55PM

That Aston Martin is all ther and it doesn;t look that bad.I am a former fire captain who is presently rrestoring old fie trucks. It appears in reasonable condition and it is complete.Just needs cosmetic work

Great car to restore.

IF this is a rusted out junk car according to the writer of this article -- I'll take a dozen !
Tammy Sep 16th 2010 2:24PM
Poor mans version or not, when I see these cars I think of early James Bond movies. They look like they are not only fun to drive but also fun to watch someone driving them.
David S. Sep 16th 2010 2:55PM
The question is, how much would money would you have to put into it to restore it and then what would it be worth?
