The Celtic Manor Resort, Home of the 2010 Ryder Cup

As we mentioned recently golf's Ryder Cup is headed to Wales and the Celtic Manor Resort this year. The biennial competition between the best professional players in the U.S. and Europe runs from September 30 to October 3 and all eyes will be watching, if only to see what sort of showing Tiger Woods makes. An article in the Dallas Morning News goes into a little bit of the history resort.

Sir Terry Matthews has spent more than $217 million to convert the former Lydia Beynon hospital to the Celtic Manor Resort and to renovate and add to its existing golf course. The resort has three golf courses including the new Twenty Ten golf course that the Ryder cup teams will play on. There are also the Roman Road and the Montgomerie courses as well as a golf academy featuring a floodlit driving range, practice range, golf shop and teaching bays and two clubhouses, The Twenty Ten Clubhouse and The Lodge with its own bar, restaurant, health club and spa.

The Twenty Ten golf course was built to host the Ryder Cup in 2010 and first opened for play in July 2007. It was the first course to be built specifically for the Ryder Cup and measures 7,493 yards off the back tees and has a par of 71. There are water hazards on half of its holes and six signature holes. The course overview reveals a challenging and unforgiving golf experience.

The resort has a total of 362 rooms and suites with 70 rooms in an adjacent Manor House. Rooms run from around $300 per night with greens fees (including cart) running about $225 on the Twenty Ten golf course. The Follow the Footsteps package is scheduled after the Ryder Cup and lets you be among the first golfers to play The Twenty Ten Course days after the best players from Europe and America have contested The 2010 Ryder Cup.

As well as playing the majestic Twenty Ten Course in Ryder Cup condition, the offer also includes a round of golf on The Montgomerie or Roman Road courses. The package includes accommodations for two, a full Welsh breakfast in The Olive Tree, one round of golf per person on The Twenty Ten course, one round of golf per person on The Roman Road or Montgomerie, a three course evening buffet at The Olive Tree restaurant, Ryder Cup cap, towel and personalized bag tag. The package is available October 5-10 and starts from £365 per person, based on two sharing or from £431 per person, based on single occupancy.
