Claridge's Unveils First Diane von Furstenburg - Designed Suite

Back in March we reported that famed fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg had signed on for her first interior design project, a series of rooms and suites for Claridge's, the ultra-luxe Art Deco hotel in London's Mayfair. Now the hotel has unveiled the first of the DVF-designed spaces, the legendary Piano Suite (above). The designer created custom pieces including a dressing table, travelling trunk, desk and cocktail bar, inspired by her glamorous travels and the mobility of campaign furniture, complementing the architectural details and elegant marble fireplace. "Claridge's is the most glamorous hotel in the world," says von Furstenberg. "Hotels like this don't exist anymore and the legacy must be respected! It is very important to keep the original architecture and the formality of the layout of the rooms in order to preserve the old style of grand hotel life that I love so much. It has been a true privilege to design new furniture, fabrics and rugs to keep it relevant for today's needs and taste."

DITTO, I HAVE STAYED IN CLARIDGES, and if THIS is what that Grand Dame of old tradition and luxury is about now, with the advent of IKEA looking college dorm motif, )the guests who USE to go there will be prefer the Imperial in Vienna where such chap chic would never be accepted and old traditional luxury rules......SHAME on DVF, it looks like she ran short of material, and preferred to use her 1960's "shirtdress" fabric onthe windows with IKEA brand furnishings else where. Hard to believe they PAID her for this garbage look!!!

Plain and simple, this is UGLY, I would ask for my money back.

amen If they want a great room designer They should hire Candice Olsen that woman is genius! Her use textures are breathtaking!
David S. Sep 4th 2010 6:48PM
Yuck -- you are going to tell me that couch and carpet are considered luxurious? Looks like they were dragged out of someone's apartment, circa 1985. Sounds like this designer was desperate....she should be ashamed to put her name on it.

I keep expecting Humphrey to come walking out with his cigarette and lean up against the mantel. This looks like the 1920s to me.

I keep expecting to see Humphrey Bogart leaning against the mantel, smoking his cigarette. This is a 1930s room!

I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder & I'm not trying to jump on the bandwagon but this honestly looks like a collection of select garage sale furniture items. Nothing with the look flows or coordinates in the least. It's bright & would wake you up early in the morning but it's not what I'd call truly "creative" but I guess it does make a statement,, just not sure what it is...

The word "whorehouse" came to mind. Albeit an expensive one.
Rich Benziger Sep 4th 2010 8:27PM
It has a thoroughly transcendent look. In other words, it looks like something that came out of me during a drunken Mexican vacation.
Rich Benziger Sep 4th 2010 8:29PM
Please, do not disparage whore houses.

With the kinda bucks SHE had to work with, I know I coulda done BETTER! Claridges is WAY too good for THIS. It looks like IKEA with a hard on.
Mary Lee Sep 4th 2010 11:15PM
People are really supposed to sleep there?!?!?! Would give me nightmares!!

Shame on Claridge's management for allowing Diane von Furstenburg to make a fool of them! It’s hi time people use their brains-my goodness this has nothing to do with taste for it's totally tasteless a waste of money no wonder everyone's going broke allowing such work to even being displayed is a joke. We Americans are really in poor shape.

Have Mercy! This looks like a cramped funeral parlor waking a Zebra whose entrails were inadvertantly left on the floor. What were they thinking? By the way whatever happened to Betsy Von Furstenburg, such a pretty smile?.
lee Sep 5th 2010 5:36AM
I would demand my refund.. that's awful!!
