Severn, Estate of the Day

Today's estate, Severn, in Lattingtown, New York, is being marketed as the summer retreat of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The former king of England and his bride Wallis Simpson, spent the summer in the French Normandy-style estate in 1948. The home was built in 1935 and sits on four acres. The grounds include gardens, a cobblestone driveway and a four-car garage with a guest apartment. The home looks to have been extensively remodeled since the Windsor days including a new modern kitchen with an island. It is listed for $5.995 million with Daniel Gale Sotheby's.

I've always admired this place and the recent renovations while more modern aren't without sympathy to the original lines of the property. It last was on the market in May 2002 for $3.9 million. I'd agree that the forecourt looks more like inlaid bricks as opposed to cobble which is more irregular and worn.
One correction the property was built in 1932 (Newsday was incorrect) and it was named Beaupre by the original owners Florence and Thomas S Tailer Jr. It was Florence's father, the very wealthy banker George F Baker II who had it built for a wedding gift. When Florence and Thomas divorced years later the property was renamed.
Some 40-acres of land was sold off to the local school district and when you see the property from above you can tell why it's not an $8M+ home. It looks like an oasis in a sea of developed lands. A shame as this was one of last done on LI by the esteemed firm of Walker & Gillette.
Perhaps just a legend but when the property was marked in 2002 there was a claim that a bedroom had been given by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Presumably that would mean wooden carved wall panels, etc. No pictures suggest that is the case today.
You can see the property on Wikimapia to get a better idea of how close municipal buildings are: (click on the image)
