Karim Rashid's SodaStream

Karim Rashid and bubbles seem a natural match. The color-loving designer has already done designs for Veuve Clicquot and now he's partnered with another maker of something bubbly--SodaStream. The new Karim Rashid Genesis Limited Edition soda maker will be available exclusively at Bloomingdale's and only 250 units will be available in the United States. SodaStream home soda makers turn water into sparkling water and soda in seconds with no batteries or electricity.
"By using this machine, the average family can save over two thousand bottles and cans each year, which is fantastic! I am honored, really, to work with SodaStream to create a machine that can have this kind of impact in the world," said Karim Rashid in a press release.
The Karim Rashid Limited Edition series includes a specially designed soda maker with a design of boldly swirling colors, two BPA-free reusable carbonating bottles and a reusable carbonator filled with CO2 to make approximately 60 liters of sparkling water or soda. It sells for $129.99.

This really is a nice looking picture. Karim Rashid's take on this item was perfect - light & fun. I cannot afford a SodaStream just now - still saving my pennies. I hear the Israel-owned company is hoping to raise money. Hmmm???
It is a bold move to ask the world to cough up a hundred million dollars in support of a company with a dozen competitors worldwide - all making the same thing and at least one offering a home soda maker for $30 (1/9 the price of SodaStream's top of the line Penguin and 1/3 the price of their economy model). In a depressed economic environment where dollar stores of the world are experiencing the most envied sales growth, SodaStream is asking for a financial injection after 13-years of pouring tens of millions of dollars into promo's and advertising and has done nothing to make their product more affordable for consumers. "Nobody's home soda maker does anything more than make soda at home", according to Fizz Giz spokesperson Ray DeBruhl. The fledgling company's website http://www.fizzgiz.com can barely be found in the search engines, has low but steady traffic and has been online since February 2010.
