Five Cigar Recommendations for Father's Day
I'm about to celebrate my first Father's Day, so when I heard that the Beverly Hills Cigar Club had a few cigar suggestions for the occasion, I opened the e-mail immediately. In past years, I would have written the blog post for everyone else ... this year, I have something at stake!Vin Lee, CEO of the Beverly Hills Cigar Club, has put together an interesting menu of cigars for Father's Day this year. From this list, I'd go with the Oliva Serie V, though my personal favorite these days is the 601 Trabuco (hint, hint).
Let's take a look at the five cigars Lee offers up as Father's Day suggestions:
1. CAO America Monument Pinstripe Torpedo
The wrapper on this cigar consists of two leaves arranged to deliver a pinstriping effect. One is a golden brown Connecticut Shade, and the other is a chocolate brown Connecticut Broadleaf. The filler comes from Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and the United States. Notes Lee, "Warm summer nights this Father's Day, heat up the Kalamazoo 900 Grill and let Dad light up America while he slow grills his special burgers. No, he still won't tell you what's in the sauce though."
2. Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur V EMS Lonsdale
Look for a confident, honest taste from the Hoyo de Monterey, says Lee. The Excalibur is one of the company's best-selling lines and has Honduran tobacco grown from Cuban seed. Lee suggests, "Let Dad light up the Excalibur as an aperitif to a big steak at Morton's and glass of warm bourbon preferable Woodford Reserve." A Father's Day meal at Morton's ... I could live with that.
3. Alec Bradley Maxx The Culture Habano Toro
According to Lee, the Alec Bradley Maxx line provides a full flavor and balanced body by using strong upper leaf tobaccos from Nicaragua, Honduras, Colombia, Mexico and Costa Rica. "Dads will love enjoying the Maxx while hanging out with the boys watching the 2010 FIFA World Cup and washing it down with icy cold Guinness."
4. Oliva Serie V Torpedo Sungrown
Lee is a big fan of the Oliva family, particularly because he enjoys Nicaraguan tobacco and because Oliva comes out with solid sticks year after year. "Oliva creates the type of cigar that Dads can smoke after he puts the top down on his new Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet and cruises the coast at sunset," says Lee.
5. Macanudo Robust Portofino Natural Lancero
This cigar includes a blend of triple-aged premium long fillers from three countries, shrouded in a Connecticut Broadleaf binder and wrapped in Connecticut Shade leaf. The result, according to Lee, is a smooth and even cigar that delivers complex flavors consistently throughout. He explains, "This is the cigar that Dad would enjoy relaxing with a chilled glass of Tattinger while texting on his new iPhone 4G how much he loves you more than your brother. He'll appreciate the Macanudo much more than that tie."
I think every dad can agree with that sentiment.
