Though I cannot imagine what organization could afford the insurance, maintenance and fuel. It was always intended to be a commercial airline. If not, I'd rather see the SR-71 Blackbird fly at airshows. It is STILL the fastest plane ever built, holding that record since its inception in 1963!

Rick Breton

Comments on Concorde Jet Undergoing $22 Million Recommission

i agree. that is one amazing aircraft. i would love to take a ride in it.

mark

Comments on Concorde Jet Undergoing $22 Million Recommission

Same thing. To see it pass, even "slow", around 900-950 km/hr (less than 1/3 of it's capacity) would knock the pants off. And then a real slow pass, just above landing speed. That Kelly J. was a MASTER.
Only once seen the swedins Draken to do that. You look to the horizont and try to see a small point, like a "fly" ,slowly increasing it's size (don't blink your eye). This little bug grews to the full size fighter, before you have time to inhale and
then it's gone. Seems familiar...AirBus is losing their shirts with the A380 every day it flies. Boeing might not introduce flights of fancy like the Concorde, but they DO make a nice profit every year. Incidentally the SR-71, which is a favorite of mine, is the fastest JET aircraft. The X15, powered by rockets went about 4,600 mph. The SR-71 came from Lockheed and the X15 from North American who built the P-51.

Frank

Comments on Concorde Jet Undergoing $22 Million Recommission

since neither British Airways or AirFrance is involved with this new venture (according to the article), I dont think that they will be losing any money. I am not very well educated in the matters of high finance, but it seems to me that if 2 other groups are doing this together, BA and AF wouldnt be on the hook for any money. I am just going by what the article says.

judiandsteveg

Comments on Concorde Jet Undergoing $22 Million Recommission

You really know how to garble up your stories, don't you? Boeing did have the SST (Super Sonic Transport) project going. Its plane resembled the Concorde in many ways but didn't get off the drawing board - costs I think. The technology was pretty solid, but Boeing has to make money. French and British manufacturers (and airlines) were tied together governmentally way back then, and still are with the Airbus.

Just the musings of an old (and getting older) Seattleite

Mike

Mike Bentley

Comments on Concorde Jet Undergoing $22 Million Recommission

Unfortunately funding for the Boeing SST program was killed before even a prototype was built and could be test flown, there was a historical milestone of the program however. The General Electric GE4 turbojet engine was produced and tested experimentally and produced 73,000 lbs of thrust, it was the most powerful jet engine ever made up to that point.
Unfortunately the 1973 fuel crisis would have killed the program, but it would have been nice to see a prototype built and flown.
I'm sure it would be in a museum today and that would be something.
It'd be interested to really know if the GE4 engine program really did die with the SST or whether it was covertly produced for a Black aircraft program.
I'm thinking about the rumored "Blackstar" aircraft. GE also made the engines in the experimental North American XB-70 mach 3 capable supersonic bomber and quite a number of engines were actually made.
Makes you wonder where those engines ended up.

B.P.
