Is A World Cup Soccer Shirt Worth Millions?
When is a shirt worth millions? When it's the shirt worn by Sir Geoff Hurst in the 1966 World Cup final. The London Times says that the shirt has been put on sale for £2.3 million. That's quite a value jump, Hurst sold the shirt at an auction at Christie's in 2000 for £91,750 and it was later sold again. Now property developer Andrew Leslau is hoping to cash in on World Cup fever. Should the shirt sell for even close to this total it would blow away the previous record of £157,750 set in 2002 for the shirt worn by Pele in Brazil's 1970 World Cup triumph.Leslau bought the shirt in 2008 and took out a £1 million insurance policy. The Times reports that he originally planned to display the shirt at Harrods before the South Africa World Cup but decided to sell it for £2 million plus VAT after receiving so many inquiries. It is now on display at the famed Harrods London store.
Many have raised their eyes at the price. Although the shirt does represent a shining moment for England and for soccer, it still seems unlikely that it will sell for this high price. The shirt is on display until June 14.

Only way a t-shirt would be worth that kind of money would be if a major celebrity was wearing it at the time of the celebrity's death.

it doesn't surprise me.....any country that still drools over a king and queen would probably pay a million for a used tampon.

This is another example of what a sick world we live in. Some people have waaaayyyyyy too much money.
Marcie Jun 3rd 2010 4:53PM
This stupid thing won't show my comment, but it will show the one about the used tampon.

I would never spend millions of dollars for a flimsy regular old shirt with sweat stains worn from somebody just like you and I . I cant understand why someone would waste money on garbage like that. Just like game worn nfl nba nhl and mlb jerseys..does it make you feel like a better person by buying this crap??..And the whole time the athletes are laughing all the way to the bank... people will spend money on garbage like this..but if a family member asks them for 50 bucks..they tell them no. Pathetic.

Forget the overpriced shirt. I would rather have Princess Diana's black ballgown that is now for sale.
ManicD Jun 3rd 2010 5:38PM
HEY ENNUI, so what happened? You waited until it took a day off, and then YOU posted??
Edward Merchan Jun 3rd 2010 5:36PM
It does not matter from which angle you look at this nonsense, in plain english it is called "IDOLATRY".
It is a mindless dream to place obscene values on the absurd, let us get real and end this idiocy, otherwise we will be upping the ante and placing similar values on other absurdities like Elvis Presley's used condoms, Marylin Monroe's un-flushed toilet paper or for that matter, my bottled pickled farts.

Anything over ten bucks is enough.

Okay. One more time. Let's print it this time:
Anything over ten bucks would be enough.

so what are you trying to say WMS? The guy who buys the shirt for 3 mil isn't better than the rest of us?? WHY NOT? His bank account is certainly better than mine. I'm pretty sure his wife looks better than mine, I'd be willing to bet his house is better than mine, also I'm ABSOLUTELY SURE his kids treat him with more respect than mine. I'm sure he dresses better than me (that is if you don't count that second hand sweaty shirt he's about to buy) I'm sure he drives a better car than mine.......I could keep this up all night, but I think you may be getting my point, AND probably coming to a similar conclusion , which is, "I don't care if I'm better than he is, I still would trade places cuz he's definately having more fun."

Some people have more money than BRAINS! How sad! Look how much good that money could do the world's poor and homeless----tragic how they high and mighty are blessed beyond their means.

Some people are blessed with more money than brains! How sad! Look how much good that money could be doing to help the homeless and the poor in the world. Why is it that those with the riches are the most selfish, self-centered A-holes???
