Gossip Girl Engagement Ring

In the season finale of CW's Gossip Girl, billionaire Chuck Bass (played by Ed Westwick) pleads with his attackers to let him keep an eye-popping engagement ring, presumably one that he is planning to give to Blair Waldorf (played by Leighton Meester). The attackers take the ring anyway, and shoot Bass, leaving him to bleed to death in an alleyway somewhere in Europe.
Bass has excellent taste. The cushion cut diamond in a tapered baguette setting was designed by Harry Winston. The signature cut is classic Winston---and it embodies timeless elegance.
The ring, as seen above, is 8 carats in size and set in platinum. It is available for purchase at the Harry Winston store on Fifth Avenue in New York. The price is available upon request.

This kind of over-the-top consumerism lost its dazzle in these economic times. I was hoping we'd have the fortitude to get back to basics, but the marketers continue to try to draw us in to their clutches to get hold of some of our money. It's sad to see nowadays, just looks lost and desperate.

"This kind of over-the-top consumerism"
I hope you realize that you sound a bit like a hobo with communistic views. On Gossip Girl, the Character Chuck Bass is the richest kid (or young man) in NYC, so I don't think a ring like that is over the top. I'm not sure where you live but EVERYBODY is still into excess & luxury, we just have to work harder and wait longer to get it, and perhaps get less.
Your an idiot to think that stuff like this "looks lost and desperate" - stuff like this keeps hopes up and encourages the economy to get back on track. Yes, saving and cost cutting is important but if nobody spends then nobody earns. I'm a small business owner in the luxury industry and every time I hear someone cutting luxuries from their lifestyle it puts me down and demotivates myself and my staff. When I hear of someone spending money and living excessively it just reminds me that there are still opportunities and I can still work hard to get what I want rather than not being able to work at all.
Its people like you that put everybody down. We're already not doing so great so do us a favour and don't make it seem worse - SHUT UP.
Gayle May 26th 2010 4:32PM
Sorry Will, but I will not 'shut up' (showing your level of class with that little directive?). I live on an island of $10-14M homes, and I see very little luxury spending going on in my crowd. It has become passe. Most people are in to more meaningful endeavors at this point, and are no longer purchasing large gaudy jewelry, handbags in the thousands of dollars, 'prestige' cars, etc. Yes, we still have extravagant homes, and I doubt any of us will give those up, but we are pulling back to basics in current purchases. It has even begun to be a little embarrassing to wear larger diamonds out in public.
While I'm sorry your business is taking a hit, this may be the time to get in to a more substantial, beneficial business, rather than trying to sell fluff.

How funny! Gayle, like so many others like her, can't see past her own wants and desires in life. From what I take from Gayle's post is, she' FINALLY gotten tired of keeping up with the Jones's lol. How long did that take you Gayle? The deal here is, everything that Will said is right. There is NOTHING wrong with anyone getting, having or wearing a ring like that. If I could afford it, like most males I'm sure, I'd sure buy my lady the very best of everything. Not becuase anyone else has it or to even show it off but rather becuase I would want her to have the very best around becuase I feel she deserves it. I'm sure there are plenty of people who do that sort of thing to "show off" but I feel most aren't that way. Maybe Gayle finally did see what's imporntant in life and on, it sure doesn't have a price tag on it either. Buthaving the very best in "whatever" if done for the right reasons, sure doesn't take away from having them or even look bad while one does it. I'm ALL FOR other striving for the very best for themselves and for the ones they love, most do that for very positive reasons.

The HW ring is beautiful. Usually those who can afford such a ring are also the largest benefactors of the arts, non profits and other charities. Other comments sound like sour grapes.

Well I agree anyway for whatever it's worth. I LOVE jewelry but lately I've come to the conclusion going off on vacation, buying diamonds etc is replaced by helping care for as many unwanted kitties as I can. People are basically selfish & selfcentered wanting to impress & disguising it as wanting the best for their whatever. They spend $150 for sneekers which the kids will outgrow before they are worn out but won't spend $60 to spay/neuter a cat which takes care of the problem once & for all. You don't have to keep buying more & more food because you have more & more cats to feed. Sometime I think the human race is dead from the neck up. I feel like I'm doing something & making a difference where as when I was traveling from place to place all I got out of it was I could say I went to ______, _______ etc. No satisfaction there just impress.

I like the emerald cut Harry Winston better, but I think the cushion cut is probably more appropriate for the character- since they're, what, eighteen years old?
