Anne Rice In Rancho Mirage, Estate of the Day

We've chronicled author Anne Rice's residences several times before. Now Rice, who has switched from writing vampire and witchcraft novels to working on books on Christianity and penning a spiritual memoir, has put her Rancho Mirage, California home on the market.
The LA Times Hot Properties reports that Rice wrote her last three books in the house which was built in 1995. The home is in a gated community and is on more than an acre that includes a pool, waterfall and a detached two-bedroom guest house with a kitchen and living room. The main house has six bedrooms and maid's quarters. The listing says that Rice did her writing in the multi-room master wing. Listing pictures reveal many colorful paintings, perhaps some painted by Rice's late husband, Stan. Images also show Rice's doll collection and plenty of bookshelves. This home is listed at $3.3 million.

Well. The grounds look nice. That is, until I see how 'green' the lawn is (in California - get a grip).
So in the interest of not saying anything truly horrible, I just won't.
Alright - this is VILE. From the porte-cochere that is too big to the 'everything' inside.

First the positive, I like the warm, rich woods of the kitchen even though the kitchen is incongruous with the rest of the house. The grounds are ok but nothing extraordinary. The entrance looks like someone put a giant carport in front of the entry door. The interior is cold and has an industrial feel. The overabundance of sterile support columns has no more appeal than the office building I work in. The recessed ceiling in the living room is unaesthetic and the plantation ceiling fans incongruous. Overall, it just lacks appeal as a comfortable home to live in.

You know, I look at these pictures and find it amazing that one person can live so lavishly. I wonder if she ever thinks about any of the people who bought her books and made her this wealthy. I wonder if she understands that she is blessed in a way that most of us will only ever dream of.

Is she tired of the heat and smog and going back to N O for the heat and humidty?

BEAUTIFUL, IM GLAD ANNE LEFT THE SANTANIC WRITINGS AND RETURNED TO THE LORD. PRAISE GOD!

Forget the Vampire stuff...PTL she gave up the depravity of her writings under the pen name Roquelaure. I had a college professor gift me her Sleeping Beauty series, I read it only because I kept telling myself what else could she fill the pages with....I now consider myself shockproof.

I was a big Anne fan until she gave up the kind of writing that made her famous. This house has little of the gothic soul of her New Orleans holdings, but I guess neither does she anymore. Oh well, I'll always love her for creating Lestat. The depression, illness and loss of loved ones she endured could make anyone seek solace in religion. At least she hasn't snubbed her original readers or proclaimed horror fiction a sin.

I am wondering who would leave those vac marks on the carpetsknowing the house will be listed for viewing. All tha money and cannot correct this. oh well to each his (her) own.

LOL, the carpet "vacuum" lines bothered me too. Hardwood floors, much more to my liking. The carpet thing has got to go.

Gee, I really expected something more tasteful . My god woman you have a gay son, couldn't he have given you some advice?

It's nice enough but honestly 3 million dollars for a house with 1 acre of property? California is way too crowded, I'll take the Midwest over the West any day of the week.
Hattie Crabtree May 16th 2010 11:05AM
I'd take the midwest and east over anything in Calif. but I do like Northern Calif.I'd love to live near Napa or Squaw Valley.I didn't enjoy the 16 years in Southern Calif.I finally got out of there and moved back east( to the hot muggy south ).I loved the St.Louis area but I'd be scared of them tornados.

I'd give my eye teeth for that gorgeous kitchen. I'd be cooking all day.
I sent her an email after I learned she returned to Catholicism and received a nice response. God bless her.
snsenica May 16th 2010 1:09AM
I love her work and she's such a beauty; but I'm slightly disappointed at the lavishness of the place. Still there is nothing wrong with living in comfort. God bless her.

Ugly house. Swimming pool, kitchen, and the outside view are nice... Recession was probably causing Anne Rice to lose her home. Some people can't afford books these days.
