Chateau du Lac, Estate of the Day

Take a little bit of France, a whole lot of Texas and you get Chateau du Lac, a French-inspired compound on Grapevine Lake in Dallas. This sprawling seven-bedroom castle is on ten acres that include a bridge house, gate house, guest house and two swimming pools. This is luxury on a grand scale. There is a wine cellar which has the interesting feature of having holes for wine bottles right in the brick wall. The Moroccan-themed media room is draped in gauzy fabrics. A marble bathtub sits on a pedestal facing a fireplace with a chandelier overhead. And, as a reminder we are in Texas, there is also a trophy room with animal heads and medieval-style sconces. A long-columned hallway recalls Citizen Kane's mythical Xanadu. The home is a pastiche of many different styles but the overall effect is pure money. Will anyone be willing to pay $18.5 million? Stay tuned.

I took a long second look at this place and I think it is actually done quite nicely. It's clearly out of place in Texas and pretentious (a McMansion on steroids), but if they have the money to spend who's to judge.
The photos from above show a very pretty lakeside estate and the interiors are keeping with the French theme. Love all the wood and the fireplaces.
And I love it when they put couches in their home theater.

I absolutely LOVE the exterior! I like the foyer with y-shaped staircase and hand carved dome. I also love the 2-story spaces including the office. The outdoor swimming pool area is also amazing! I agree that some of the rooms are horribly decorated, like the dining room.

Wowee, thought the Beverly Hillbilly's were still in California. Guess they built a new house in Texas. Wow, how much bad can you possibly get in one house? This is a great example.

I actually like this. There are a few things I would change but you could do a lot with this house.

I wouldn't pay 1.8 million to live anywhere near Grapevine, much less 18. I'll take anything in 75205 over this monstrosity any day. It's almost as gross as living in Southlake. Maybe some nouveau riche yankee transplant will jump on this.

its 18.5 million.
i think some of the decor is very over done, but overall, excellent bones. that pool is to die for.

I wouldn't. I'd rather look out at a lake rather than somebody else's house.
