The World's Most Expensive Car... Wrecks

Here at Luxist we write a lot about the world's most expensive cars. Now the London Telegraph has compiled a list of the world's most expensive car wrecks, following Jackie Stewart's trashing of a Pagani Zonda supercar in Scotland, which my colleague Noah Joseph reported on last week. Here's the paper's list of flaming Ferraris, burned-out Bugattis and other smashed-up supercars. The values given are those at the time the crashes occurred as calculated by the Telegraph. Let's hope all the insurance was in order:

1. 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO: $28.5 million
The car's British owner, who has never been named, was participating in an historic car race when he crashed into the back of another car in slow traffic. He had bought the car at auction in 2008 for $28.5 million.

2. 1961 Ferrari 250 GT Spyder: $10 million.
The 1961 car was bought at auction in 2008 for $10 million. But the unfortunate owner, who has not been named, stored the car near a beach in California and it was wrecked in a hurricane and literally buried in the sand.

3. 1959 Ferrari 250 GT TDF: $1.65 million
The unnamed owner of this $1.65 million car, nicknamed "Tour de France", crashed into a wall during the Shell Ferrari-Maserati Historic Challenge in 2003 at the infamous Lime Rock race track in, Connecticut, United States.

4. Ferrari Enzo: $1.3 million
Swedish businessman Bo Stefan "Fat Steven" Eriksson was involved in the spectacular accident in 2006, when he lost control of his $1.3 million Ferrari at 196 mph on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and crashed into a pole. He later pleaded no contest to a drunken driving charge in connection with the crash and embezzling two other fancy cars and illegally possessing a gun.

5. Bugatti Veyron: $1.25 million
Away Soni, 39, was driving his millionaire older brother's brand new rare car at 100 mph in the pouring rain along a 40 mph stretch of the B375 near Chertsey, Surrey, UK in March 2007 when he collided with a Vauxhall Astra.
6. Jaguar XJ220: $1 million
The unnamed owner crashed this car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the world's biggest historic motorsport event. The front bonnet crumpled in the crash.
7. Pagani Zonda: $1 million
The car's owner crashed his vehicle in Hong Kong in December last year when an out of control truck forced him into a row of parked cars. He had been driving back from racing track event.

8. McLaren F1: $960,000
Rowan Atkinson, the actor, in October 1999 crashed his 240 mph machine, one of the fastest production cars in the world at the time. The former star of Blackadder and Mr Bean collided with the rear of a Metro driven by Margaret Greenhalgh, 62, as he was driving north on the A6 near Lancaster, UK.
9. Pagani Zonda S: $790,000
The unnamed driver crashed the supercar after spinning out of control on a test run down a country lane near Aberdeen. The final insurance bill could be more than £300,000 once all the repairs are completed, Aviva said, making it one of the highest ever payouts in the UK.

10. Mercedes-Benz 300 SL "Gullwing": $700,000
An unnamed owner of the beautiful classic car was involved in a crash with a Seattle council landscape truck, which appropriately enough had the name "impact landscaping" on the side.

You'd rather b*tch about it than to click the picture to find out what's wrong with the article about the beached Ferrari, right? Well here ya go......
Car:
Ferrari 250 Pininfarina California Spyder (not 100% sure)
Description:
Witness saw this Ferrari about 3 weeks after Hurrican Ivan. It was just sitting on the side of the beach road (highway 182) in Orange Beach, Alabama

Ha ha ha! It looks more like someone dumped a load of sand on the car! If you believe that California has hurricanes...I have some really nice vacation property in the Louisanna swamp land I'll sell you! Really does look like a dump truck dropped a load on the car! If he was storing it...what the hell was he storing it in? A sand castle? Ha ha ha! He deserved what he got just for being so stupid!

Obvioulsy, no one has noticed the heavy equipment tire tracks around that sand piled car. Nor has anyone mentioned the mounds of sand in the background. This "accident" was more than likely contrived by man, not nature.
cwvducky97 Apr 5th 2010 1:29AM
that looks bad lol hhaha

You poor, poor rich people. My heart sarcastically bleeds for you. It's a shame cars of this caliber fell into your hands.
leslie Apr 5th 2010 1:48AM
if y'all would click on the pic that takes u to the website y'all would see that it was after hurricane ivan in alabama
Zadkiel Apr 5th 2010 2:01AM
The 300SL is a convertible in that picture. Therefore it doesn't have gullwings.
Yon Apr 5th 2010 2:11AM
Those people have the same thinking than the guy who bought an expensive electric guitar and saw himself an instant rock star.
fmalleaux Apr 5th 2010 3:29AM
1959 Ferrari 250 GT TDF: $1.65 million... Huh? Looks more like a 57 Chevy to me.

You people must be misinformed morons. No the west coast really doesn't get hurricanes but there are exceptions to the rule. 1992 Hurricane Enkil hits Hawaii, -not sure of exact name. Also this past year 2009 most of the hurricanes were on the west coast due to El Nino. We didn't have one hurricane here in Florida, maybe watch the weather channel once in awhile instead of your idiotic reality shows....ROFL. As for the person bitching about Cali. I grew up in Cali and Ariz, moved to the east coast 8 years ago and regret it. Florida is by far the land of fruits and nuts compared to California. Most of the people I have meet here are dumb as a box of rocks and couldn't drive their way out of a paper bag, WORST in the country. The work ethic here is worthless, most of the people I have tried to hire either do half assed jobs or they are scammers. So you can keep your precious east coast, this is like an alien world to me.....lol
Ripper Nyght Apr 5th 2010 4:04AM
At least Number 7 was a real accident and not done by the drivers stupidity. Forced off the road into parked cars by a run away truck. No mention he was speeding or doing anything stupid on the road.
Mel Apr 5th 2010 10:31AM
If those could afford expensive cars and wrecked them, they should have sold their cars and donate money to the poor which can be more of benefit to them than to waste the expensive cars to the junk yard.. Heavens help us !!!!!
crppplll Apr 5th 2010 4:27AM
I guess you california people don't recognize Huntington Beach and the missing garage that
ferrari was parked in. You must be from the inland empire.
crppplll Apr 5th 2010 4:37AM
And I thought I was the only one who thought they were dumber than rocks. I also noticed they are against Healthcare reform. Maybe it's the water.
ameer_al_sharife90 Apr 5th 2010 5:37AM
i think instead buying fauncy car we must help poor people in all over the world
becuse in one day maybe we become like them and no body will help us like we do now

Who even cares about the cars? I say they are all a waste of money to begin with. And another thing, If you are stupid enough to take a million dollar car out for a high speed run or to a race track, then you got what was coming to you. How stupid. What a waste of time and money. Oh and I belive that the car on the beach was not where it said it was. The sand is way to fine and white for it's location. Do you smell a rat in the sand?
