Takashimaya Closing Fifth Avenue Store

takashimaya fifth avenueA venerable Fifth Avenue shopping destination will be shutting its doors. Takashimaya New York, which is at 693 Fifth Avenue, is closing June 2010 with online shopping ending April 2 according to a posting on their web site. The store has been in this location since 1993 but has been on Fifth Avenue since 1958. The multi-level store has shopping in categories including women's and men's clothing, jewelry, home decor and gifts and also has a floral boutique and spa. Bento box lunches and other delicacies are served at the Teabox restaurant.

Crain's New York reports
that the Japanese retailer owns the Fifth Avenue location and plans to sell it. Six additional Takashimaya stores in Japan have also been closed. The retail part of the Fifth Avenue store has been on the market for several months. Any retailer seeking to take over would probably have to use at least the first three floors for a store.
