Queen of England's Bespoke Jaguar Daimler for Sale

A luxurious bespoke Daimler Majestic V8 (above) built by Jaguar and used by the Queen of England as her personal motor is being offered for sale in the UK. The British racing green vehicle, used as the Queen's daily driver between 2001 and 2004, includes several bespoke royal touches, such as a special holder for her favorite handbag, a console of switches to control flashing strobe lamps and blue emergency convoy lights, a secure telephone once linked to Downing Street and the Home Office, and special rear seat protectors for transporting the royal dogs. No price is being advertised but the car cost about $100,000 when new. The Queen's motor pool still includes two Bentleys, three Rolls-Royces and three Daimlers, among sundry other vehicles.

Maybe she could auction it off for a charity. What a concept? Maybe not, maybe she really needs the money.
Heather Mar 22nd 2010 5:41PM
That was my thinking, too, especially when I read how many she will still own.

I was wondering what "bespoke" meant. I thought it was an old-fashioned word for engaged, as in "Hannah and me are bespoke". However when I clicked on the link in the article, it took me to some of the most unattractive shoes I have ever seen, so I have come to the conclusion that "bespoke" must mean butt-ugly and laughably expensive.

bespoke describes a high degree of customisation, and involvement of the end-user, in the production of the good.

Don't these writers have some kind of degree. Journalism or English, or something related to writing? Using "bespoke" like that just doesn't make any sense.

There hasn't been a Queen of England since 1707. Her title is Queen of Great Britain & Northern Ireland.
Dr. Pal Mar 22nd 2010 5:15PM
Bespoke, as in to engage, hire, or order in advance. In this case, it indicates that the Elizabeth Regina custom ordered the car, that it was made to her personal specifications, that she commissioned it to be built. The article's author's usage of the word is quite correct.
Dr. Pal Mar 22nd 2010 5:29PM
For purposes of elucidation, bespoke, as in to engage (for purposes of commissioning a work), order in advance (as opposed to taking something already assembled). The car was custom-ordered, and built to Elizabeth Regina's personal specifications. It's quite common to order one's Rolls Royce, Bentley or Maybach as a bespoke automobile, as well as for Daimler to meet with the client to discuss his individual requirements. So, the article's author was quite correct in their choice of the word, bespoke.

Bespoke means "custom made". The Brits are laughing at you right now!
cardio sam Mar 22nd 2010 5:35PM
I've understood "bespoke" to mean -custom made for an individual- which in this application of a car built specifically for the Queen- WOULD apply.
Custom Suits are "bespoke".
Custom shirts are "bespoke"
