Rush Limbaugh's Gaudy NYC Penthouse for Sale at $13.95 Million [UPDATE]

It looks like Rush Limbaugh is making good on his threat to leave New York City because of the new tax hikes. The larger-than-life conservative commentator just listed his pre-war Fifth Avenue penthouse for sale at $13.95 million, Gawker reports. The gaudy 20th-floor penthouse (above) at 1049 Fifth Avenue, which Limbaugh purchased in 1994, features 10 rooms with expansive Central Park and Reservoir views and four terraces, two of which face the park. There's a double living room with a fireplace, a wood paneled library, large media room with a terrace, a kitchen with a breakfast room, a large dining room with two terraces, four bedrooms with en-suite baths, and his-and-hers dressing rooms and baths, each with an oversized tub and stall shower. In questionable taste are the hand painted mural ceilings and walls throughout by artist Richard Smith. Ditto the hand painted gold leaf moldings. The foyer entry floor is patterned Italian hand-cut marble with herringbone mahogany in the uncarpeted rooms, and walls are upholstered in Fortuny fabric. There's also a separate maid's room with bath on the third floor.
UPDATE: The asking price for Rush Limbaugh's Fifth Avenue Penthouse has dropped by $1 million. It is currently listed by Corcoran for $12.95 million.

Like the owner, the word "Tacky" leaps to mind.
alexanbd Mar 2nd 2010 7:52PM
I don't care what your politics are, this is the first time I saw Luxist use the word "Gaudy", or any other typically negative adjective, in a headline to describe any other celebrity's house for sale.
I understand it's still a blog, but come on, feel free to call it gaudy in the article or in your circles - but don't be as tacky as you accuse the space of being.
There have been some gaudy spaces on Luxist, and this one is probably up there with them, but I don't think it's a mere coincidence that the first time the word appears is in connection with a conservative.
Rex Mar 3rd 2010 10:05PM
AMEN -- I mean how can Rush's "tacky" home compete with those paragons of class & taste like peripheral rockers/rappers and high school dropout actors and actresses????
Mr Stern, Stick to objectively showcasing homes and keep your (unsolicited) political potshots to yourself......or leave and go cover real estate for the Huffington Post. I'm sure idiots like KATYDID579 & her ilk will lap it up over there like Pavlov's dog.
JLS Mar 3rd 2010 3:32AM
You are being far too sensative. The fact is his home IS gaudy. You are attaching some sort of conspiracy as to why this author used that single word to describe it when there is no conspiracy. It wasn't political!
alexanbd Mar 3rd 2010 8:25AM
I am not being "sensative" (or sensitive). I was merely pointing out that it is likely more than a coincidence that the word "gaudy" graced the headline of a Luxist post for the first time in connection with a polarizing conservative. Agree with his politics or not, it's simply the first time Luxist has stepped outside of its otherwise objective headlines. . .
If used from the GAWKER article, the author should have a little more creativity; if used for political motivations, the author is clearly the tacky individual.

I could not agree more! Is it really necessary to have politics seep into every inch of our culture? Why does the author feel it necessary to be so rude? I believe the only reason is because it is Rush Limbaugh's penthouse that he feels free to call it "gawdy." If this were Elizabeth Taylor's penthouse or even anyone on the left.... would the author have taken the same cheap shot? Doubtful and THAT is pathetic. People are allowed to have their own opinions and express them freely but the "press" is supposed to be unbiased.... even when it comes to Rush Limbaugh's penthouse.
I am sick of conservatives being targeted in every aspect of their lives souly on their political P.O.V.
sherry Mar 3rd 2010 12:02PM
Seriously...even this is becoming political.
Rappers movie stars etc have houses that are "over the top".
Pick on conservatives much????
this article is garbage.
V36love Mar 3rd 2010 1:03PM
Thank you,.I don't think I could of said it any better than you,...if that was some Liberals Home it never would of read Tacky. I LOVE to see that there are still some conservatives out there, I'm so sick of these Liberals with there weak ways of life!!
J.J. May 18th 2010 8:51PM
I don't know or care if it's the first time the term "gaudy" was used in Luxist or not. I , a profound liberal, do disagree with the writers opinion about the condo being gaudy. Except for the odd sky paintings on the ceiling, its pleasing , tasteful, and reserved enough.
And another point: I have always found the term terribly disrespectful of the quite famous architect from whom I believe the term was coined, Antonio Gaudi.

I agree alexanbd..in my experience as an interior designer, I have seen many 'gaudy' homes, far too many to name.. most were deserved..but, never in the context this was promoted..
From the pictures provided, it looked very comfortable and tastefully designed, with beautiful whimsical detail (murals), I would bet the author of the snobby review would give anything to live in this beautiful home..I know I would!
Ed McCarthy May 19th 2010 7:54AM
I don't know what they've said about other celeb properties, but this one is definitely gaudy! I don't care who owns it, tacky is tacky.. on a more positive note, maybe Limbaugh is moving to Costa Rica like he threatened..to a country with national health care and no army - go figure.

Luxist may have erred on the "gaudy" but it's one of the very few AOL affiliate boards who has removed the hyperlink from under your display name.
Thanks Luxist. The other sites are committing a major Privacy infringement.
What happens when you first leave a comment on ANY AOL site, is that a "profile" is automatically created linked to your Email address. You are assured that the address will be private and that "verification" is required.
Okay. But they also ask for your name. If you're naive, you put in your real name. This is NOT private. It appears on your profile.
Okay .... that's not the worst of it. There is an archive of every letter you ever wrote or will write to ANY AOL comment board permanently SAVED under your profile. AND that profile is connected to your name or display name on any comment you make. If you change your display name, it makes no difference ... the link will connect back to your profile...... AND the archives.
And if you posted on LemonDrop. your profile may appear as an independent link picked uo by Google on the entire web.
Thankfully Luxist has not provided the hyperlink. Thank Luxist again!

I think "Gaudy" is the correct word to use. In fact, it's being very kind. This Apartment looks like Leona Helmsly's garage sale items were used to furnish it. And it's soooo masculine in design.
Jack Mar 3rd 2010 12:32PM
What does your mobile home look like? Is it trendy?
mark May 18th 2010 10:59PM
i think the real word they were looking for is GAY!!!!!!!!
Olmansnarky Mar 2nd 2010 8:43PM
I think it looks elegant. But you parking attendants and grocery baggers would not know elegance if it bit you in your Walmart frequent shopping cards.
jshaffran Mar 3rd 2010 9:59AM
I agreeeeeee!!!!! This is how the rich live and it shows. I'd live with all that. It's happy, bright, and beautiful.
poot Mar 3rd 2010 10:38AM
That tell us a lot about your taste, I suggest that 75 years ago when you were in your forties, it may have been looked upon that way. Now it's shabby, trashy, and looks like the result of an experiment involving large simians and LSD.
capoprncss Mar 3rd 2010 12:31PM
Hahahaha you think that was elegant? You probably think gold chains and bracelets on men are also elegant. I have a pinky ring that I want to sell you.
That house is tacky!!!!!!! Who the hell needs a mural of palm trees in a room painted with blue? It has nothing to do with politics. Not to bring up rhetoric that you guys hate but I can't resist...lipstick on a pig doesn't make a pig beautiful. All the money in the world can not make that house under Rush Limbaugh's control classy.
Stay classy San Francisco ;-)!

This has to be a valuable example for scientists seeking to understand the right wing brain. Clearly and without doubt, scientists can finally conclude that people who say stupid things live like stupid people. That copy of the Winged Victory of Samothrace must of cost at least a hundred bucks. Wow! who would have thought that rich wingers would spend good money to live like King Louis on the Hudson. Can anyone provide a tour of his Florida property for confirmation?
