Animal vacations may have some value (animals may need a break from their owners/ trained-slaves) to learn what they may be missing. I am thinking of the letters that Watson sent to Holmes in "The Hound of the Baskervilles". Holmes lived in a cave in the Grimpen Moor and intercepted the posted letters as Watson sent them. Holmes could not be immediately on site, but had Watson play his eyes and ears, giving information from years of watching what Holmes might himself observe.
