The real value in a stone like this is in the loose pieces that result after cutting for the big gem. Those are studied and carefully cut to get the largest and best quality "settable" stones that are made into actual jewelry. This would start at several carat stones all the way to one point diamonds used in watches. (One carat equals 100 points). The skill and acuracy of the cutter is everything. This is why I have my emeralds cut in Thailand, they are simply the best emerald cutters.
The very best diamonds are not sold on the open market but come through Johanessburg, South Africa....Alfred-

al schrader

Comments on Huge Diamond Sells For Over $35 Million

We are in a recession and you people are buying rocks for $35 million? I could pay off my bills , buy grocerys, fix the house, finally get in a store with my business, take a vacation I haven't had in years! Why don't you put some of that money to good use. A diamond is just a rock that sits there and does nothing. It happens to be pretty, but you can't eat it, drive it, turn it into a store. I think the wrong people have money when they have so much to throw around that they start buying rocks for so much! It's disgusting!

allears

Comments on Huge Diamond Sells For Over $35 Million

I know I can't get over it either...

bradvil8

Comments on Huge Diamond Sells For Over $35 Million

Oh, grow up and read a book on economics for once in your life. Try "Economics in One Lesson" by Hazlitt. The diamond has value because of its rarity. There are paintings and drawings which are even more valuable and all they "do" is hang on walls or sit in cabinets. You are typical, stupid, "forward-thinking" Americans who think you know more and can do better. And, of course, you're all much more compassionate: "oh, what good things WE can do with that money....." It never occurs to you that economics is not a zero-sum system; that the wealth produced by someone else does not diminish yours? Your wealth has been diminished by the last 50 years of your government's activities: tax advantages to corporations that send their manufacturing infrastructures overseas; domestic budgets that have increased under EVERY congress; economic and political policies which serve no other purpose than to compromise, if not eliminate, our sovereignty. And not to mention your culture that is nothing more than an open sewer. This country is getting exactly what it deserves. Unfortunately, too many inmnocents will suffer as a consequence.

borisbadenovisback

Comments on Huge Diamond Sells For Over $35 Million

Your "mantra" comment rminded me of my father'sdefinition of a communist.

"A communist is some one that has nothing and wants to share it with everyone."

twoma3

Comments on Huge Diamond Sells For Over $35 Million

I have to agree with you. In your comment you said “This country is getting exactly what it deserves.” What exactly did you mean by that? It sounds like you live here and are unhappy. Well let me inform you just in case you didn’t know, YOU CAN LEAVE. Hippocrates like you really get my blood boiling. You claim to hate the US and everything we stand for but yet you live here. You’re the worst kind of hypocrite. You take advantage of all our country has to offer then make these stupid comments about how bad we are and how much you despise us. Just go back to where you came from or where ever you think would be a better place to live. You are not held captive and you are more than free to leave whenever you would like. I’m sure we would be much better off without you here anyway. Yes, we do have the freedom of speech and you are free to feel and say whatever you like but why would you stay somewhere that makes you so unhappy if you can leave? Our young men and women fight for your right to be the way you are so you should show some respect. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and blaming our country for your problems. Quite making blanket generalizations about who we are and what we stand for because you obviously do not understand us nor do you even try. You like so many others take advantage of our great nation and its opportunities only to turn against us and claim we are the bad guys. You truly make me sick to my stomach.

Mark

Comments on Huge Diamond Sells For Over $35 Million

Well, now. The BLUE diamond is my engagement ring. The HONKIN' diamond which just sold will make me a nice lariot-style diamond necklace, a pair of earrings, and a diamond bracelet... perhaps two. The EVENING STAR diamond will be the pendant on my lariot diamond necklace. The GIANT emerald will do for my giant earrings, and the RARE green diamond will compliment them in my dinner ring.

As for a fitting name for the HONKIN' diamond? I am an American and very proud of it. We are not perfect and neither is anyone else. All humans are flawed in someway or another. I am most certain that your county has its flaws as well. How do you even know that the comment you were commenting on was from a US citizen.
It amazes me how you and others like you put down the United States and talk so poorly of us. You generalize all of us as if we all think alike. This is what you don’t understand about Americans, we are free to think for ourselves and speak for ourselves, we often disagree, yet we are united as a nation. When push comes to shove we put aside our differences and stand together. It is funny how you and others like you are so quick to jump on our flaws and bad mouth us at every chance you get but when a crisis hits who do you call for help, Americans. You so conveniently forget the positive and humanitarian things we are doing around the globe. You forget all about the aid we provide to others in times of need, Haiti and Chili are prime examples. Americans have big hearts and want to help despite what you and others say. I think this speaks volumes for our country and its people. You forget the aid our country gives to so many others.
Sounds a little like the relationship a lot of people have with God; we all want his guidance and help in times of despair and sorrow but forget him when times are good. We blame God for things we ourselves do and then we beg for him fix it. Not to compare the US with God, we are far from it but you get the correlation. We are dammed if you do and dammed if we don’t. If we refuse to help you would call us selfish, cruel and uncaring. If we do help you say we are butting in to others affairs or not minding our own business.
Sometimes, when people like you make such terrible comments, I think we should let you all suffer until you realize just how much we are needed and how much we do help. Then I realize that would not be fair to the people who don’t feel the way you do.

Mark

Comments on Huge Diamond Sells For Over $35 Million

Mark, your oh so right my friend, americans are so missunderstood and catagorized as selfish do gooders.. we never get a pat on the back for our humanitarian efforts.
we are certainly far from perfect but as you said we have big hearts. and no one can take that away from us.
our biggest flaw is who we tend to elect as our leaders. but we are trying we just get confused sometimes and make decisions based on hope.
well thats a whole other story.. peace and love to all... that is the only answer in this day and age... wake up world..

bossssss

Comments on Huge Diamond Sells For Over $35 Million

Mark, You make some excellent points in your post. Thank you for what you have stated.

I agree with you that we Americans have big hearts. When ever people need help, we as a people, reach out to them.

I was some what dismayed with the way in which the Red Cross handled the many millions given to them to help the victims of Katrina.

I have read that they still have 500 million in the bank, unspent.

Since then, I have searched the internet and spoken with many organizations across America.

I have found six who work to save Americans.

One of them, that I appreciate, is Focus Adolescent Services. For twenty years they have been working to save American children. They do this on a very tight budget, and they do it for free.

That is just one. If you would like more I will gladley send you what my research has found. There are many Americans working so hard to help others in need. So many go un-noticed. However, I think they do not mind that.
