Rare Comic Book Sale Puts Superman Back On Top

A rare copy of the first comic book to feature Superman sold this week for a record breaking $1 million. Considered by many in the market to be the "Holy Grail" of comic books, the 1938 edition Action Comics #1 was in excellent condition and was originally sold for just 10 cents. It features Superman lifting a car on its front cover.
The sale went through the website ComicConnect.com and was between a private seller and private buyer. The $1 million sale price smashes the previous record of $317,000 set last year for another Action Comics #1 issue (in lesser condition) and looks like it will hold its own against the Batman auction coming up soon.

with all of the poverty and famine throughout the world it amazes me that there are people selfish enough to spend 1 million dollars on a comic book. I guess it is important that the buyer can brag to his (or her) comic book collecting geek friends.

kwebandb, your a liberal jerk, its his money he can spend it as he sees fit, to bad in your stupid touchy feely eyes hes a bad person, thank goodness your not in charge of others money,, im a semi rich old guy, and i will not give a dime of my money away to so called hungry homeless needy people, if their not elderly or handicapped they dont get a dime, im enjoying spending my money and even more enjoying how unhappy my success and having money makes people like you, aint america great??

I suppose in your opinion it's okay for Nancy Pelosi to fly back and forth between D.C. and CA every week at a half million dollars of taxpayer expense per trip. Why doesn't she stay in D.C. and give the money to the poor? Only a liberal socialist thinks the gov should take the money a person earns and give it to the non-workers.
Dan Feb 23rd 2010 11:32AM
And whaqt is wrong with buying the book? Or are you a communist that feels the government should take the persons money from them, to spend as they see fit? If the person earned the money, they have the right to spend it. Period.

I don't care how he spends his money, this kind of purchase is an investment.
I think he overpaid by about 40% but hey the market bares
To the guy who complained about the "waste"
1) This is nothing to do about comic collecting, this is finance, its an investment, like with any other work of art. Your lack of appreciation for the work does not devalue the piece. The seller is clearly looking long game, and if the collectables market rebounds, he may be looking at a 10-15% gain on his investment, while having a pretty cool piece for 2 years.
2) between you and me, any guy who has 1Mil to buy a piece like this, probably has he hand in several charities and has donate plenty of money over the years.
I think its Nic Cage, he sold all his vintage comics a few years ago - now he's having sellers remorse.

now i think back i had some comics that would be valuable.

Who cares how much he overpaid. This isn't a stupid baseball that can become worthless if another player beats that record. This sale triples the value of that comic book to anyone who owns one in that same condition. I am a comic book collector myself but not in a lavish way and I will definitely save them in their condition til my farts turn to dust.
This is the reason we live in America, we have the right to do anything we want with our money and i'm damn proud that every other country is jealous of our freedom and pride. If you disagree on that then go move to Cuba or Rwanda and let's see how much you will miss being on american soil.

The first Superman comics came out in June 1938.
The X-Ray Spec novelty joke was invented by Harold von Braunhut couple years later after the first issue came out. Therefore the first Supe comic didn't have the X-ray spec add.
